Problem burning/mounting
The last couple DVD's I've burned on the G5 have hit the point of writing lead out and it just makes a really loud noise and doesn't finish. It won't eject so I have to restart the computer just to get it back to normal. The disc I pulled out was fine even though I cancelled the recording. Why is it doing this? It's really annoying.
And as a side note. The last few times I've had hard drives/CD's/DVD's connected or in the computer, sometimes they aren't recognized and I have to restart the computer to see them. I never had to do this before, only the last few days. Thanks for any help
Hi-
Short of failing hardware...... maintenance?
If your problems are getting progressively worse, I would suggest some system maintenance (cron scripts, permissions, cache cleaning, etc.).
Should that not clear things up, reinstall of the OS may be a good thing to think about.

Problems burning dual layer discs using 10.3.9
Hi please can someone help!!
I am pretty knowledgeable about macs but having problems.
My mac came with a pioneer 103 superdrive and have had no problems burning CDs and DVDs with Toast 6 Titanium. Recently i wanted to back up my dvds i have bought as some you can't easily buy anymore.
So i bought an external usb pioneer 108 and some 2.4x Dual layer DVD+R Rivision discs.
When ever i burn it gets right to the end of finishing and comes up with various errors and says it may have a lead-in lead-out connectivity problem. I have installed a patchburn which recognised both dvd drives and i installed before trying to burn. I have read somewhere that OSX 10.2.9 + can burn Dual layer and i have 10.3.9.
I have tried best and 2x with no joy. I am also using the setting DVD-ROM (UDF). After the disc mounts it plays through DVD player but is really jolting and is spit out by my normal DVD player connected to my TV.
I have got the DVD info off the disc using MactheRipper and just placing the two folders Video T_S and the other on the disc. I am keeping the Name as it was orginally. I have successfully copied a DVD that was less than 4.7gb which worked on both of my dvd players with my Pioneer 103 drive that can only burn normal DVDs.
I have not tried burning any other disc formats on the Pioneer 108 but felt it was a software problem rather than a hardware.
I have looked on Pioneer.co.uk and they have Firmware's i can download for the Pioneer 108 but not sure what firmware is or does? or whether they are PC or Mac versions.
thanks for your time, hope i have given all information required, would appreciate anyones help.Hi

You need Tiger if you want to burn DL Media using the Finder, otherwise you'll need to invest in Roxio's Toast. -
I am having problems burning a playlist to CD - type Maxell CD-R 80XL. I have been using these successfully for a while.
iTunes 11.03.42 updated today Error 4251 and wastes a CD
I have run windows registry cleaner

Cant find the problem
Yesterday I successfully burnt a CD with a different playlist
All musice imported in iTunes
Help and / or advise please
MalHi Dilbert41
Turned off my firewall and tried but still didnt work. Rang Apple Care and went through about 10 things. Didnt resolve.
I then tried different media and a CDRW worked.
I wasted 10 CD-Rs today
Not really sure if its a media problem as 2 CD-Rs out of the same batch worked yesterday.
Thanks for trying to help -
I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
But thanks -
Horrible problems while mounting BTRFS RAID1 array (on a single HDD)
Since I made my 2TB HDD (Samsung M9T which I bought precisely to make it a BTRFS RAID1 array for data security) into 2 x 1TB btrfs RAID1 array, I keep having horrible mounting problems.
There are two subvolumes on that array:
@data
@sys_backup
fstab entries for them look like so:
UUID=a0555768-a37f-4bd8-95e5-66ebd6a09c75 /mnt/Disk_D btrfs device=/dev/mapper/2TB-1TB_RAID1a,device=/dev/mapper/2TB-1TB_RAID1b,rw,noatime,compress=lzo,autodefrag,space_cache,nofail,commit=180,subvol=@data 0 0
UUID=a0555768-a37f-4bd8-95e5-66ebd6a09c75 /mnt/arch_backup btrfs device=/dev/mapper/2TB-1TB_RAID1a,device=/dev/mapper/2TB-1TB_RAID1b,rw,noatime,compress=zlib,autodefrag,space_cache,nofail,x-systemd.automount,commit=250,subvol=@sys_backup 0 0
Now, I rarely access @sys_backup, but I have never found it not being mounted. @data on the other hand mounts hardly ever.
Most of the time, after boot, then I try to access /mnt/Disk_D mountpoint, it either
A - turns out empty, and running “mount” command confirms there's nothing mounted there. Trying to mount it manually renders absolutely no effect. Not even an error message.
or
B – every program used to access that mountpoint (terminal, file manager, conky displaying free space or anything else) freezes and I have to kill it. Even tryping “/mnt/D” and pressing TAB for autocompletion crashes the terminal.
I then need to reboot anywhere from 1 to 15 more times to get it mount properly.
I had this problem since I started using RAID1 3 months ago. I had it on kernels 3.17, 3.18 and 3.19.
Other things that made no difference include:
➤ adding/removing “device=” option
➤ adding/removing x-systemd.automount option
➤ changing UUIDs o /dev/mapper/... entries
➤ completing scrub on that partition
➤ running dry run btrfs check (no errors indicated)
This is horrible. Is there any solution to it, or is it just the current state of BTRFS? And if it is the later, then what other than btrfs Raid1 solution could be implemented?

The whole discussion I linked is about doing a RAID 1 on a single disk. And the article linked from that discussion is only to prove the point of btrfs self-healing.
firecat53 wrote:If you think about it, you are going to absolutely kill your read/write times by having the drive head trying to keep up a RAID 1 mirror on two partitions of the same drive.
The read performance is unchanged. The write performance is 50% of the standard partition, but since it is a data drive, that is not a serious issue. Certainly less serious than data security.
firecat53 wrote:My guess is that's why you are having issues.
Maybe so, but I don't see a reason to assume it and even it is so, then I don't think those issues should be there.
firecat53 wrote:You're going to be much better off buying two 1TB drives and using those in RAID 1!! Or just a single 2TB btrfs drive....with a UPS and another drive as a backup drive.
I can't do that because it is a laptop SSD with system + HDD with data.
firecat53 wrote:I've been using btrfs on my laptop SSD and on my server for almost a year now with only one problem (corruption from a power loss to the server before I got the UPS).
I have been using btrfs on my laptop SSD + HDD and on my RPi server since over a year and btrfs check was detecting minor issues every few months.
I now run SSD (non-raid) + HDD (2 partitions in RAID1) on laptop, and SD (2 partitions in RAID1) + HDD (2 partitions in RAID1) on RPi (which - by the way, has no such problems with mounting neither SD nor HDD in Raid1) and I have not yet had any error with btrfs check. -
itunes tells me I've inserted blank disk then won't burn because it says I need to insert a blank disc.
I tried several disks, all blank and got the same message so I thought I'd try burning my cd going through Finder.
When I dragged a couple songs into the finder to burn and hit burn, I got a message saying the files were too big for the disk even though it was less then 4mbs.
Tried going through my Toast software and Toast crashes using cds. I have burned dvds using toast but no cds.
I'm going to copy the error message from toast in case someone can figure out what it means but just so you know, I was able to burn a cd using Toast when I tried a different cd brand.
The brand giving me troubles is Memorex. I was able to use a brand called Lextron.
I own a pc too and never had any problems burning cds from this same pack of cds.
My computer is not even a month old. I'm actually on my 3rd replacements. I seem to keep having issues with these new macbook pros.
Here's that error message.

I've had this package of CDs for over a year and never had any trouble burning cds on my pc nor have my sons had any problems when they've used them to burn cds on their pcs.
If mac computers are temperamental and only use a particular brand it seems they should let the consumer know so we know what brand to buy.
The brand that worked was something I bought years ago and have no idea where to even look to buy more. I tried doing a google search for the product and came up with nothing.
The brand is Lextron.
I'm not sure what other brand works unless I start buying any brand I can find but how many brands would I have to go through in order to find one that works?
And just for the record, Memorex CD-rws will work in a mac computer but apparently not mine.
I have the 15" i7 mac.
Is there anyone else with this same model who's run into the same problem and can tell me what brand of cd-rws work in the machine? -
Problems Burning in Disc in Encore CS4
Hello all,
I just recently upgraded to Adobe Encore CS4 and I'm trying to burn a blu-ray disc but the program is giving me problems.
All of my video assets are .m2v movie clips, which includes the motion menus I am using, compressed to that format in Sorenson Squeeze.
The first time I tried to burn the disc I received an error before it even started to render the menus. The error was Src\VideoFrameManipulators.cpp-563. I did some searching and decided to import the quicktime movies of the menus and use the quicktimes instead of .m2v files. When I tried to build the project again it got through rendering almost all the menus and then I received this error message Src\pp\\PPixHandleUtilities.cpp-114].
After that I tried transcoding each menu video separaretly and that did work, I got the same PPixHandleUtilities error again. I tried re-importing the files, relinking the files, etc, nothing is working. I'm at a loss.
I have burned a blu-ray disc already so I don't think it is the drive.
I'm running Windows Vista Business 64-bit as the operating system.
Any thoughts?
KristinI too am having problems burning data disks to dvd. While it appeared to burn without problems. It took over an hour sometimes 2 or 3 to burn the dvd which upon completion was not recognized in either my Dell or my Mac. I hooked up my external drive where my music is kept to my Mac and it appears to have burnt correctly readable by both machines and took about ten minutes to burn each dvd. So it appears the Windows version is majorly screwed.

Error Code: 0x8002006D Problems burning CDs
I have encountered problems in recent days reading my archive CDs and now I'm having problems burning them. I use good quality IMATION 700Mb CD-Rs and have never had any problem with these before. The CD to be burned loads OK and I can copy the files across OK but when it comes to burning (using the preinstalled burn software) it seems to rush through the files too quickly, then it starts the burn process bar at the top but after a few seconds reports the Error Code 0x8002006D and states that CD can't be written.
I have used a lens cleaner in the last couple of days in the hope that would work but with no luck. Any ideas would be most welcome.A shelf above a radiator is a definite no-no for data discs, where losing a handful of bits can ruin the data beyond the built-in error correction encoding's ability to recover. Music CDs are more forgiving since you can actually lose quite a few bits and the human brain will compensate by filling in for the missing sounds.
The amount of data being burned shouldn't matter, provided you have enough free space on the hard drive for creation of the temporary invisible scratch file used during burning. A good rule-of-thumb is to maintain at least as much free space as the media to which you're copying data, plus 300 to 500 MB for the Unix swap files in /private/var/vm. For a DVD-burner equipped Mac, you'd want to keep 5 GB or more free space on the hard drive; for a CD-R burner only Mac, you can get as low as around 1.5 GB (in theory --- I'd go with the 5 GB rule of thumb anyway). -
Problem burning red led constantly flashes
Hi all this is my first post in this forum....( NEWBIE )
as mentioned in subject Problem burning red led constantly flashes then I recieve a message " error reading data"
the dvd burner is a MSI ms 8404a. using Nero6 and princo DVD -R Win XP-PRO
I have had no problems in the past burning with this media and I'm halfway through a stack of 50...
I dont have any other media here atmo so any help would be great..
Also upgraded firmware with msilive although it said I had the current version..
Cheers in advance ROB
Ok just burnt a cd using nero6 while burning the red led flashed costantly, when finished cd ran perfectly ....??? anyone want ABBA GOLD??
Im sure as that when I used to burn DVD's the red led was solid not flashing....H E L P ....!I don't understand why the light would be solid and not flashing when burning.
If this is a common problem, it's a problem for me because i'm about to order two MSI DR16-B DVD-RW drives, tell me, is this the drive you have in your system? The one with the problem?
If so i could use some advance warning of the problems i might face.
The previous post is correct, make sure that your Operating System hasn't put the drive into PIO mode, it should be UDMA Mode 2 at least. -

I'm having problems burning a finished project to DVD, I have traced the problem threw going back threw saved versions and thing the problem is the DVD menu tabs, I tried making the tabs bigger and that maybe the problem, can anyone think why that would be..

Re: problem burning multiple discs from iDVD
I am having a problem burning multiple DVDs. My first DVD burns fine but my second one won't complete the process. It stays in the "BURN PROCESS Current Operation: Writing Lead-Out..." phase for hours without ever completing the burn. I am using good quality Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R blank discs. Can anyone offer any advice/solutions? Thanks!
Hi
Double Click on the hard disk up righthand side of Your desktop. Often named
Macintosh HD.
At the bottom of this new window it reads nn Objects and xx.xx Gb free space.
Else:
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
Many possible origins. Most common:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc if it is less than 10Gb should raher have 25Gb
• Hard disc is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - or rather start a new account - log into this and re-try
• Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.3, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.3 - is OK

Suddenly problems burning in iTunes
When I burn a playlist longer than 30 minutes, it goes through burning and then hangs on "Finishing" and won't actually finish. I have waited up to an hour for this finishing process, which used to take about a minute. So I have to force quit, then restart to be able to eject the disk, then it will play the first 30 minutes and that's it.
This just started recently, before everything was fine.Hi everyone! After searching the forums for a long time last night, I discovered a solution - I tried a different brand of CD, and it worked! The one that didn't work was HP. Maxell, Memorex and even Comp USA disks did work. However, HP had no problem burning in iPhoto, just iTunes, when it couldn't get past the "finishing" stage.
Hope this helps someone else! -
Problem with mounting external harddrive
Today, I've installed Arch for the first time after two years with Ubuntu. It seems to be working pretty well, but I've got a problem while mounting my external harddrive. The disc is has to partition, one formatted as ext3 and one as NTFS. Both partition shows up at the desktop, but after a while I get an error message concerning that the NTFS-partition cannot be mounted. It still appears as mounted, but I can't get access to it. The ext3-partition seems to be working, but when I try to copy a folder, the whole system freezes, and I haven't found any other things to do than pressing te power off-button.

Does anyone have an idea on what to do with this problem? You do perhaps have to include the partitions in the fstab file. This could help you:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab
You want to mount /dev/sdb1 (ext3) and /dev/sdb2 (ntfs) to any folders preferably in /mnt. You will have to create them as root. Have a look at
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
Maybe you want to mount from there as this method is not dependent on the order and usb port number you plug it in. For ntfs you can choose
noauto,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=027
as mount options in fstab if your user-id is 1000. -
Permissions problem with Disk Burning / Mounting
I have an account on OS 10.4.x under which a blank CD RW does not mount properly. Instead, Disk Utility is launched and the blank disk does not mount on the Desktop.
The account has admin privileges and I've performed a repair permissions multiple times including from a startup CD. This behavior only occurs under this particular account.
Any help would be appreciated.

http://www.mytechmusings.comThank you. That might be the solution but I need to double-check with my teacher (user) to see what her laptop's default behaviour is currently set to.
If the preference IS set to launch Disk Utility on CD insert, wouldn't the CD-R still appear to mount on the Desktop after closing DU? After we closed DU the CD-R didn't appear anywhere-- which might be the cause of our confusion.
