Problem Capturing in FCE 1.0

Okay, I know this is an ancient program, but it has worked well for me since 2003. I have FCE HD 4.0 installed on my laptop, but I prefer using my desktop for editing and it's a G5 (not intel) and won't run 4.0.
Anyway, as I said, it's worked pretty well for years. Recently, I consistently have had problems capturing video. The capture stops way before the out mark. Obviously, this is a real hassle. Has anyone run across this problem and if so, how did they resolve it? I have plenty of HD space and the capture disk is an internal drive.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Stuart

What do you mean by saying FCE 4 won't work on a G5?
It will even work on a G4.
The only thing you need an Intel processor for is AVCHD which  you are apparently not using.

  • Problem capturing PAL video into FCE HD

I'm having a problem capturing video from a PAL MiniDV tape. The tape was recorded on a PAL camera during a shoot in India; when I got home with the tapes the cameraman gave me, I was unable to view them on (or capture them from) my (NTSC) Canon GL-1 to my PowerBook G4 running FCE HD3.5.1 (external hard drive).
I borrowed a friend's Sony Handycam and CAN view the tape without a problem on that, AND get a "VTR OK" message in the FCE "Capture" window (though I get color bars and a "Preview Disabled" screen). I can also control the tape playback from the FCE Capture interface.
However, when I click "Capture Now", after clicking the "Play" button, I get a dialogue box that says "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
I have tried a number of different "Easy Setup" device control options, but to no avail.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm going to correct myself ... although I was able to capture the contents of ONE tape, after that the problem returned and I cannot capture anything else (even that same tape). So it seems the "solution" was not "FireWire-all-the-way" but remains out of my reach for the moment ...

  • Compatibility of Sony HC1 to Capture in FCE 3.0.1

I’m attempting to Capture HD video from a Sony HC1 camcorder to my iMac G5, EyeSight, Pre-Intel, 2.1 Ghz, 250G Built-In Hard Drive via Firewire. (No external FW hard drives are involved.)
I’m using FCE 3.0.1 which Apple considers compatible with the Sony HC1.
I have no problem capturing video from this camera if I select Sequence Preset DV NTSC 48Khz, but that captures 720x480 resolution.
If I select Apple Codec 1080i60 via Easy Setup, and go to File-Capture, select Capture Now, the preview window appears, but is black, no video.
The HCI camcorder LCD display is showing video but my Preview window is black like the video has been cut off. Anyone with any ideas why this is happening?
I wish there were a site that gives a step by step “setup” for capturing HD video from the Sony HC1 HD camcorder using FCE 3.0.1, or other major camcorders.
I called Apple and was told my version of FCE, purchased in Feb’06 is no longer “supported” because the newer version (FCE 3.5) is now being sold. They suggested that I go to the Apple support website for possible help, which I did do. The Apple rep listened politely to my problem but was unable to give me even a small clue, suggestions to try. He did offer to upgrade me to FCE 3.5 but then admitted that the Sony HC1 is not compatible with the FCE 3.5 version.
I found this post from CHRIS on April 15, 2005:
“A good question to ask at this point is does the Sony HC1 work properly with Final Cut Express HD in HDV mode?
Also is it true that Final Cut Express HD does not edit HDV in it's native format and FCP HD does?----CHRIS”
Has anyone determined an answer to this question that was posed over a year ago? I hope I don’t have to purchase FC Pro Studio to do HD!! If so, Apple needs to rename this software product minus “HD”.

    Hi(bonjour) BoBo!
I do not know this Sony model but for my FX1 the letters "HDV" or "DV" appears in LCD screen upon shooting.
I'm pretty sure that your output is HDV, so you have to set FCE HD to Apple intermediate codec 1080i50 or 60 (depending of your localized model of camcorder-European or US) to capture HDV material (wich will be handled by Apple Intermediate Codec, no in native format). On the FX1, there is a "blue" diode on side of camera and near the firewire socket to show the current mode of export and an indication on LCD.
You can also set the camcorder to downconvert your HDV shooted material to standard definition (SD) on exporting. With this setting you have to select DV-NTSC or DV-PAL (depending of your localized camcoder) in FCE HD to import the downconverted footage in SD DV format.
See the VCR output menu to select the desired output format.
Finally you can shoot your movie in SD instead of HDV (see camcorder's manual, camcorder's menu: format and screen) in 4:3 or 16:9 format. With this setting you have to select DV-NTSC or DV-PAL (depending of your localized camcoder) in FCE HD to import the footage in SD DV format.
Seeing HDV (in Apple intermediate codec format) in Final Cut Express HD is AMAZING on a HD cinema display: 1920X1080 pixels of pure color and details.
Remember: all "easy setup" changes will take effect for new sequence only.
    Good Luck!

  • Problem capturing DV; random stops and "no video" error. Please help!

I'm trying to import about 15 minutes of DV recorded in late 2005. During capture (using Capture Now...) the capture fails during each attempt at different times (13 minutes, 11 minutes, 30 seconds, 6 minutes). The error message is, "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
If I watch the capture, right before this error message, the camcorder stops playing and starts stepping back frame by frame. The capture window says something like, "Searching for timecode." Then after a minute or so, it starts stepping forward frame by frame. Then, after this happens for a minute, the message in the capture window changes to, "Cueing source material." The camcorder starts to play again. I think what SHOULD happen is the capture resumes. But the capture video preview window remains black, and after a few seconds I get the error message.
When I watch the tape (without capturing) I can't discern any drop outs on the tape, although I guess they could be there after 4 years. But if that is the case, why does this problem occur at a different point each time?
I tried turning off the preference to "abort capture on dropped frames" but that had no effect.
I'm using a Canon GL2, DV-NTSC Firewire Basic, and the system noted below.
    FCE version 4.0.1.
Any help would be most welcome.

Let me summarize the problem so far.
    1. When capturing DV, FCE behaves as if there is a time code break (when there isn't one) at random points on the tape. This may occur anywhere on the tape, even at the very beginning.
    2. When this occurs, FCE will roll the tape back and then forth, looking for the break, as expected. (It doesn't roll back if the tape is at the beginning, obviously.)
    3. After a minute, FCE is getting ready to start the capture again, and says "cueing source material."
    4. The camcorder starts playing the tape again, but the capture video preview window in FCE remains black, as if there is no video signal.
    5. After a few seconds, while the video on the camera is still playing, FCE gives the error, "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
Observation: The problem occurred much more frequently when capturing DV from a Canon GL2 directly to a LaCie disk on the same Firewire bus, even though the camera is attached via Firewire 400 and the drive via Firewire 800. Capturing to an internal (non-boot) media hard drive does not solve the above problem, but the problem occurs less frequently.
Does the above description suggest any particular explanation of what is going on? I wonder if FCE is corrupted? Should I try reinstalling FCE?
    Thanks.

  • Problem capturing and/or importing hd video

I have always edited standard def video but I trying to switch to hd. I have no problem capturing standard def video into final cut.
Final cut express 4 will not capture my 1080i hd footage that I shot on a professional sony cam. So then I captured the footage on quicktime thinking I could import into final cut from quicktime. When I try to import, the only thing that shows up is the audio and when I put it in the timeline it says 'codec could not be opened'. I called apple support and he suggested that I need to convert the footage but I don't even know what program to use. I would think this sony camera shoots pretty standard format that would be universal. Is there a setting in final cut that I need to change? Whats going on? If I can't get this fixed I may have to go back to standard def video. Thanks.

Exactly what model Mac do you have, what versions of OS X, QT and FCE are installed?  What is the capacity and free space on your system HD?
Are you using an external hard drive for your video ... if so, what make/model, capacity and free space, and is it connected to your Mac via USB, FW or TB?
(FYI, dropped frames typically occur when your hard drive cannot deliver the video fast enough; this usually happens if your system HD and/or external hard drive are more than 50% full and/or if you are using an external USB drive. It can also happen if you have other programs running the same time as FCE.)

  • Capturing in FCE, making it a HUGE file called "av"

When capturing in FCE, it has been locking up because it is making it a file that takes up about 3 times more space called "AV". This has been an intermittent problem that does not happen every single capture but after capturing for a few minutes it returns to this. Very frustrating. I have never had any problems out of FCE since I got it with my Power Mac G5. When I try to open up the file as a stand alone file, it says it's "not a video file", what does that mean?? Help please....??

Yes I checked the formatting, using only internal drive, no externals.
First of all, if it "has no timecode", then why does Final Cut say "locating timeocode break" when it stops capturing?? Plus, it makes sense that if it is skipping around in timecode breaks, that's why the system is locking up because if it thinks it's a huge file that takes up my remaining hard drive space, it kicks off as to save the remaining 2gb of space.
Your other comment about setting to DV converter. I know that there are a few options for settings. One is DV converter, another is Firewire. I have noticed there is no difference between capturing video with the two. I wish what you said was true, that if set on DV converter, there is no timecode. But if that was true, then why all of the problems capturing from VHS? When I capture from my 8mm video camera, it only stops capturing when there is a hard break in control track.
What I ended up doing to capture this entire video I wanted from VHS was use iMovie of all things. It's pretty sad when you have to use the lower grade, novice video program when you have paid for the professional version just to capture some video. This went beautifully with NO PROBLEMS at all. My opinion: because iMovie DOES NOT READ TIMECODE, it just captures whatever you put in, thank goodness.
Another question for you. When you have recorded things on your old VCR, don't you remember the numbers on the read out of the VCR or on the screen when it rewinds for fast forwards? That is timecode.

  • Are there problems capturing with Quicktime 7.3.1?

Are there still problems capturing video on FCP or Xpress using Quicktime 7.3.1. or later?
I'm using Quicktime 7 which does work, but for some time any newer version of Quicktime would not capture video more than 5 mins.
    Has that problem been solved?

I'm going to have to disagree with you.
I've gone through every upgrade of QT 6 and 7 without issues. Am I lucky or do I just keep a clean system with no added junk or simply edit mainstream formats while staying away from Facebook/YouTube/fringe consumer formats? Who knows what keeps my machines happy? But they are.
Specific updates of QT did not break EVERY installation of Final Cut. If you have a specific issue with a specific piece of software (ie FCE) , its best to ask questions in the forum dedicated to that software.
Of course, it's always best to let the early adopters suffer and if your machine is working fine, don't upgrade anything.
    Good luck.

  • Problem capturing with Final Cut Pro 5.0

I seem to have a problem capturing to my new macbook with FCP 5.0 installed. I know how to capture and I've done it a million times before but this is the first time with this Mac.
I'm capturing from my MiniDV camera via firewire. I've checked if my scratchdiscs have enough room and it has plenty (250gb).
Everytime I go to capture, a box comes up that says "General Error" with no error code. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong or what's wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem with me. J just bought a macbook pro 2,33 Hz.
When I capture on my FCP 5.0.4 there is no problem but when I push the " esc" button to close the capture he FCP crashes. Help me I bought the Macbook pro to edit on location and now I can't capture.
I use a DSR11 of sony to capture. Fire wire input (SD PAL)
Even I use a XD-cam same problem no capture.

  • Quality problem exporting from FCE

    Hi,
i have a quality problem exporting from FCE. I have finalized a 30 minute movie and want to send it to friends on DVD or CD-ROM. when i use "export as quicktime movie" the file has 6.5 GB and won't fit on a DVD-ROM. when i use "export with quicktime conversion" and choose quicktime movie with H.264 compression and highest quality the movie goes down to 4.2GB. Now it would fit on a DVD-ROM, but the quality is not good. The picture looks blurred and i see some type of interlace-effect.
which type of export format do i have to choose to avoid the interlace and blurred pictures? is there a magic format that does not cost that much quality and reduces the movie by 30-40%? or would a video DVD work better? how do i create a DVD? with iDVD?
    thanks for your help!

or would a video DVD work better? how do i create a DVD? with iDVD?
    That's what Id do.
Export as QuickTime Movie (reference file is OK) and drop the export to iDVD.
You will get 1 hour of FCE Timeline on a single sided disc using Best Performance (iDVD setting).
Two hours using Best Quality (iDVD setting)

  • Importing a QT Screen Capture to FCE 4.0

I've just spent ages recording a video using both a camera (pointed at me) and doing screen capture (using the new QT that came with SL) at the same time. I wanted to edit them together but I can't get the QT screen capture into FCE.
Please don't tell me that FCE doesn't support those files. Is that correct?
Quality isn't too important, so the only solution I can think of is to record the screen capture just by pointing my camera at the screen. Anyone got any other ideas. I need to do it quick sharp.

That's correct. The screen capture uses the H.264 codec, which is a delivery format and not used in production. The material needs to be converted to the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can do this using FCE, the QuickTime 7 pro player, or MPEG Streamclip.

  • PROBLEMS CAPTURING, DROP FRAMES ON 4.5

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO SINCE I HAVE UPDATED TO THE LATEST VERSION I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS CAPTURING.

I'm not at my Mac right now to check, but it should be something like this:
Open System Preferences (usually located on the Dock).
    Click on the Spotlight pane.
Click on the Privacy tab or button.
There should be an ADD button, click that and add whatever volume(s) you've assign as FCP capture/scratch discs.
That will keep Spotlight from trying to index files as you capture footage which is the root cause of capture problems when using a non-recommended version of FCP with OS 10.4.9.

  • Problems capturing onto an external harddrive

I just got a new Lacie Brick external harddrive, and looking around these forums, it seems that was a bad choice. I have no problem capturing footage right onto my computer, but when I try to capture onto the Lacie then Finalcut freezes and won't shut down. Is there any way to fix this or should I just get a different harddrive?

    > However, it
can be used as a back up drive....
    And an excellent one too!
There's a lot of rubbish talked about LaCie external hard drives - my "Big Disk" 500 GB unit has worked hard, flawlessly for a year or so now.
Unfortunately (maybe because they're small) hard drives get moved around and abused during use. If they aren't fan cooled, they can overheat if there isn't free air space (and common sense) around them.
Moving an external HD while it's working is a pretty sure way to wreck it - and so is allowing it to get too hot.
Use your brick - it's a pity it isn't Firewire but it will still be a valuable asset to you for backup as X said.

  • Problems capturing clips

I using the latest version of FCP with a Blackmagic card. Everything has been working fine until today. I'm having problems capturing clips. I'll start Log & Capture, grab a clip, the window displays it is capturing it, and then when I look at the logging bin, my clip is not there. But if I look in the capture scratch folder, the clip is there.
Now, if I try to import that or any other clip, FCP gives me an error message. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I would appreciate your help.

Probably a Black Magic issue so be prepared to talk to them.
To debug this, you have to take the Black Magic stuff out of the equation to determine if FCP is at fault. If you have any DV device, try to capture from it.

  • Problems capturing audio track

I am having a problem capturing from my DV camera into Final Cut Pro (version 5.1.4) on a souped up G4. I made a few changes to the hardware configuration recently, but the problem started prior to these upgrades so I don't think it is related. I installed an ATA drive and replaced a defective USB2/FW800 Sonnet card.
I thought I had a problem with the playback head on the camera when the capture issues first started. I got black horizontal bars on the screen of the camera as well as on the screen when I attempted to capture footage. I also got timecode error messages. I was able to capture some of the tape in FCP using a different camera, but upon examination I noticed both audio tracks are missing small segments of data. There are a few blank spots scattered throughout the footage. The picture is fine. The problem is in the audio tracks only. both tracks in the same area.
One of the camera repair people I talked to said the tape could be bad. Does this make sense if only the audio track is missing segments and the picture track is complete?
Thanks, I appreciate any help you can give me in figuring this out.

Thanks for your suggestions and opinion. I am reading everyone's comments. In order to get the most from this discussion, please answer each of these questions separately so the people who are following it will have no trouble following the answers that apply to each.
I distinctly remember when I was shooting the footage of the problem tape, the picture looked fine. It was not until I tried to review the tape that the problem appeared.
    1. Is it possible that the camera works for shooting but the camera playback head is causing problems?
    2. Can a bad playback head damage the tape on playback?
    2. Can shooting onto a bad tape damage a camera?
    3. Is it possible to shoot with a camera with a bad playback and then use another drive for playback?
Thanks for your help. I do know a few people who are having playback problems, since all the tape cameras are getting old, so we appreciate this discussion.

  • Problems Capturing Video via FireWire

I have had problems capturing video via firewire on my MacBook Pro. It is an early 2008 model. I have tried capturing video using multiple programs, cables and cameras. In both Final Cut Express and iMovie ('08 and '09) I loose the connection mysteriously. It just stops sensing my camera mid capture. I can shut the computer down, programs down and cameras down but nothing seems to work consistently in getting it to work. The weird part is that it does work some times. Recently I tried an auto capture of a whole miniDV tape through a sony handicam via iMovie '09. It got 20mins of the tape then stopped and rewound the tape. When trying it again it read "connection error". I could not get it to work. I put the computer to sleep and came back later. It worked but only captured about 10 minutes then shut down the whole camera and import completely. I switched to manual import and it will now only let me capture about 20 seconds at a time. What is going on? To me it seems like the port itself is malfunctioning and disconnecting the signal randomly. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the cause and what can I do about it?

I've been reading the forums and it seems that there is an issue with the Firewire port in general. I have an external firewire 800 HD and when copying large files or a large number of files the HD gets dismounted unexpectedly. Your case seems similar in that we are both transferring large files via Firewire. Anyone have any fixes for this?
