Problem capturing PAL video into FCE HD

I'm having a problem capturing video from a PAL MiniDV tape. The tape was recorded on a PAL camera during a shoot in India; when I got home with the tapes the cameraman gave me, I was unable to view them on (or capture them from) my (NTSC) Canon GL-1 to my PowerBook G4 running FCE HD3.5.1 (external hard drive).
I borrowed a friend's Sony Handycam and CAN view the tape without a problem on that, AND get a "VTR OK" message in the FCE "Capture" window (though I get color bars and a "Preview Disabled" screen). I can also control the tape playback from the FCE Capture interface.
However, when I click "Capture Now", after clicking the "Play" button, I get a dialogue box that says "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
I have tried a number of different "Easy Setup" device control options, but to no avail.
Can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm going to correct myself ... although I was able to capture the contents of ONE tape, after that the problem returned and I cannot capture anything else (even that same tape). So it seems the "solution" was not "FireWire-all-the-way" but remains out of my reach for the moment ...

  • A problem capturing VHS tapes into FCE via Miglia Directors Cut

I am trying to capture vhs recordings via Miglia Directors Cut into FCE. FCE does not seem to be recognising or capturing. The footage will be visible in the capture preview window but when capture is started nothing appears in the main capture window and the preview goes back to No preview available.
The VHS deck is connected to the directors cut via composite cables, and the Directors Cut is connected via firewire to my G5. Does this in itself create a problem?

Use the FCE Easy Setup called *DV-PAL DV Converter* if you are working with PAL video (DV-NTSC DV Converter if you are working with NTSC video).
Also make sure all settings in the Miglia unit are correct for PAL video.
Also, I have found it helpful to have the video running before you click the Capture Now button.
One other thing, the Miglia Directors Cut spec sheet says that it is not compatible with the PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro. I do not understand why this should be unless it has something to do with the unit being powered by the FW bus. Do you happen to have the optional power supply for your unit?

  • How do I get analog hi 8 video into FCE?

I am trying to get hi 8 video into FCE (or iMovie HD). I have the hi 8 tape in a Hitachi D.S.P. III (digital signal processor) camcorder. This is connected to my Sony mini-DV digital camcorder. My camcorder has A/V>DV option. I have my camera connected to the computer via Firewire. Should I use the A/V>DV option to do this? I am not getting the sound from the hi 8 tape and the video looks bad. What am I doing wrong?
    Barbara

Well, I read everything in the manual and think I've done exactly what it says. When I connected to my computer, as I mentioned, the video was poor (perhaps tracking needed to be adjusted on the Hi 8 camcorder), but I don't understand why I didn't get any audio.
I also tried to connect the hi 8 camcorder directly to my DVR thinking I could burn it to a DVD and then extract from that to do more editing although I know the quality would not be as good. Again, when I tried to record, I got poor video quality and no sound. When I just play the hi 8 tape connected to my DVR, there definitely is sound and the video looks fine. I am at a loss--this is beyond my knowledge.
Thank you for your assistance, and if you have other suggestions, I would try them. However, the hi 8 camcorder and tape will not be available to me after tomorrow as my brother will be taking them back to Florida when he leaves Saturday. My only other thought is to record to a VHS tape and then I'm sure I can get that into my Sony camcorder because I've done that before. But, I sure would like to know how to make the other work right.
    Thanks very much!

  • Capturing PAL video via QuickTime

When I record from my videocamera using QuickTime, I cannot get it to record at full size. Even "device native" is at reduced size. The frame size is 384x288 but I need it at 720x576. This is a PAL video camera.
Normally I would use FinalCut to capture the media, however there are some weird tape errors with this particular tape, and it keeps stopping recording. QuickTime allows me to keep capturing (it ignores the errors) but it won't give me the same frame size

Interestingly, that quarter size video was the same data rate as the full size video that QuickTime captures.
DV compression video data rates are basically fixed at 25 Mbps for DV (DV25) and DVCPRO25 while DVCPRO50 is twice that rate. Total data rates vary by actual audio/video content and audio bit length used (usually 16-bit/48.0 KHz).
The device is a Sony PD150/PD170 camera, using DVCam tapes. So I am guessing that when Final Cut captures, it is converting that to QuickTime as it captures?
Nearly all editors work natively in DV format since it allows "frame" level editing. Main problem routinely encountered is capturing in iMovie (or iMovie file compatible application) and then importing the file to FCE/FCP. (This requires re-rendering of the audio.) QT format may require this strategy but since it is not part of my normal workflow, I don't know for sure. In addition, the importation of other QT compatible formats automatically invokes a conversion of the source file to the DV format. HDV is additionally compressed with MPEG in order to lower the typical 100-120 video data rate to more compatible DV/FireWire data rates for capture by your editor (or user set to to downconvert to DV during export).

  • Audio problem when converting iMovie09 into FCE

I originally converted analog tapes to digital and captured video/audio into iMovie 09. This worked well
When then exporting via .xml and importing into FCE, the video portion worked well, but the audio portion is barely audible. Even when I turn the volume all the way up and use the decibel adjustments, the audio is hard to hear
    What should I do?
Thanks for any help on this question
    Ron

Tom -- the original analog tape was 8mm, recorded on a Sony Camcorder. In iMovie-09, I don't have any problem after having converted the analog tape to DV. It's becomes a problem (buzzing sound) when it export via XML into FCE4.0.1

  • Captures PAL video with NTSC camera using Premiere Pro 1.5

I try to capture (download) PAL videos from a Sony DCR-HC40 NTSC camera using Premiere Pro 1.5. I can see the movie (on the camera) but none is captured in Premiere. I did it before and it worked, but I forgot the appropriate setting within the Premiere program.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Muenkey

The latter is the problem. As I hit the capture button, the tape in the camera rolls, I can see (and hear) the PAL movie in the view finder and on the LCD screen of the camera, but the capture window stays black (though the frame counter works) and nothing is captured. (This is true whether I use an NTSC or PAL project set-up in Premiere). Again, I know there is a solution. I have done it before but forgot the necessary set-up steps in Premiere.

  • Problem capturing analog video

I need a little help here...I have a Canopus a/v converter hooked up into a Sony Hi8 editing VCR so that I can capture some older tapes of mine into FCE. However when I hut the "capture now" button while the tape is playing, the rainbow disk starts spinning and the capture window just stays black and says, "allocating disk space" forever. Tweny minutes later, it starts capturing. Is this a memory issue? I can't figure it out...
    thanks...

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Yes you can capture on the internal drive, but it's not recommended in extended video editing workflow. A dedicated firewire external drive is a much-much- better solution.
    Good luck.

  • Problems capturing DV video that has 32k audio

While capturing in a project that has a basic set up for DV/PAL 48kz, I keep getting warnings after capture, that the frequency of my captured material does not match my project settings and there might be synchro problems with my audio later!
My problem is that if I can change my sequence set up to 32k - a frequency that seemingly matches the video I am trying to capture (showing on my video monitor what I think is the 32kz info) I cannot find how to actually _set up the project for audio at 32k_ . For PAL video, the only choice I have seems to be for audio at 48kz.
I am getting confused and my audio not in sync...
Anybody could unconfuse and re-sync me ?
    Thanks

From the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings > Capture Presets.
You will see that the setting for DV PAL has a lock next to it, to indicate that it cannot be changed.
Click on Duplicate. You can now make the changes that you need.
Match those settings to what you shot.

  • Problem inserting Flash video into DW CS3 template

I would like to insert some flash video into an editable
region inside a DW CS3 template. The template I am using seems to
work for literally hundreds of other pages I have made (none of
which, incidentally, have any media of any kind in them).
I have created the template and then an editable region and
now want to insert the flash video in that editable region. All
goes well until I hit the OK button. then I get this error--Making
this change would require changing code that is locked by a
template or translator The change will be discarded.
Can anyone suggest how I might over come this error??
    Thx.
    Jane

The problem is the detection option in the video insertion
    dialog. If you
disable that option, you will not get the error.
This is a problem because the detection routine requires a
    modification to
the <body> tag (insertion of an onload event) which you
    cannot easily do in
    a template child page.
If you really must have the detection, then you can copy and
    past the load
call from a dummy (non-templated) page on which you have also
    done the same
insertion. Post back with that page's body tag code, and I'll
    show you
    how....

  • How do i import 480x360 ipad video into fce?

I'm trying to import video from my ipad into fce. Is there a way to set up my sequence with 480x360 parameters? I'd rather not have to render it when bringing it in.
    Thanks,

" Is there a way to set up my sequence with 480x360 parameters?"
    No.
That size should be transcoded to a size that is the same as an FCE Easy Setup.
I'd use a DV Easy Setup.

  • How do I use my HDV camera to capture VCR video into Premiere Elements?

Hello all, I am trying to put VHS video into my computer. I have read that my Canon HV30 can act as an interface between my VCR and my computer. I am supposed to connect my VCR to my HV30 and my HV30 to the computer through firewire. My question is this, how do I connect my VCR to my HV30? Which port on my HV30 is a video input? It has a yellow connection named "AV/(headphones logo)", and one called "component" that looks like a mini firewire port. It also has a red connection named "mic". The other connections are the typical firewire port and such, so it cant be those.? Thanks

I'm not sure if your camcorder can work as a pass-through between your VHS and computer. Fewer and fewer camcorders have this feature.
Is your camcorder able to record input from another video source? That's kind of the test. If you camcorder can record from your VCR then it can likely also serve as a pass-through.
But, sadly, this is one of the features that camcorder manufacturers have stopped including with their cams.

  • Capturing Footage From Composite / S-Video into FCE

I want to capture some footage from analogue sources into my Mac. It can either be via composite or S-Video but my question is : Which gizmo should I use to convert the analogue signal into DV?
The Canopus range seems like it would do the trick (ADVC55, 110 or 300, with the 55 closest to my price-point.) But the specs say it's compatible with FCP, and don't mention FCE explicitly. If I buy it, will it work, or is there some particular difference between FCP and FCE, that means it won't?
    Mac Mini 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Canopus works just fine with FCE. I've been using my ADVC 110 with two versions of FCE for two years and it works fine ... the 300 should be even better cuz of the built in TBC. I know from others that you will have no compatibility probs.

  • Problems capturing VHS video - help please (Elements 11)

I've tried without success trying to capture a VHS tape into Elements 11 for two hours now and really need some guidance please.
The hardware is a Win 7 64 bit desptop and my VCR player is connected to the PC via a Canopus ADVC55 firewire connection, through an S-video and L/R audio inputs. The VHS tape is a Japanese one whihc plays fine through the VCR when it is connected directly to my TV.
The capture process I'm trying to use is "DV Camcorder" but I keep getting an error message in the capture window stating that "Camera settings do not agree with project settings" and that the capture process may not work properly.
To solve this I've tried almost all the NTSC settings in the New Project dialogue box. Sometimes the Canopus isn't recognised, sometimes it is but I get the above error message but nothing gets captured.
I would have thought the correct project setting would be NTSC/DV/Standard 48kHz but i just get the error message. When I ticked the "force these settings for the project" box I got an immediate blue screen of death!
I'm obviously doing something - or several things - that aren't right. I'd be very grateful if somebody could put me straight. All over the internet are articles saying how easy this VHS to DVD transfer is!!
    TIA. John.

Thank you very much gentlemen for your help and advice. I've had a whale of a time this afternoon trying to make some sense of the problem.
I've downloaded WinDV and updated the Firewire drivers. I've checked Device Manager and there is nothing there about dropped frames or timcodes. I've also tried every combination of the Canopus dipswitches making sure that I reboot bewteen setting changes. I've tried 2 different VHS players and also swapped out the cables. I've also found an old Miglia capture device and tried that as well in case the problem lies with the Canopus.
    The conclusions so far:-
    1. Using WinDV with the Canopus set to NTSC I get a picture straight away no problem and audio works as well. BUT the pictures are in black & white not colour.
    2. The Canopus doesn't pass the video through to WinDV with the dipswitches set to PAL - the status light stays red.
    3. So going back to elements 11 I've tried both dipswitch settings. With PAL the Canopus doesn't pass the signal through as for WinDV.
    4. With Elements 11 with the dipswitch set to NTSC and the New Project settings at PAL/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the error message about "Camera settings and Project settings being different" and my PC hangs completely.
    5. With Elements 11 with the dipswitches set to NTSC and the New Project settings at NTSC/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the message as above but if I close it then the "record" button is inactive and no video is recorded.
    6. And those results are the same for both VHS players.
    7. With The Miglia device I get no picture or sound with either WinDV or Elements 11 no matter what type of VHS tape I try to record.
And that's as far as I've got.
Are there any other Project settings I should try? Can anybody help with the Black and White issue with WinDV?
I just want to get the VHS recorded via any piece of software now!
    Thanks again.

  • Problem capturing analog video from camera

i'm using FCP X version 10, trying to capture some hi-8 video from my camcorder through a hardware device called Dazzle* Hollywood DV Bridge.
when i open the Camera Import window, the analog footage displays successfully. however when Import, Stop Import, and Close, the footage does not appear as a Clip in my Event. It seems that the footage was not captured.
i experimented with capturing some footage in the Camera Import from Apple Built-in iSight. i followed the same steps as I did above, for the analog. with the iSight, however, the footage is successfully captures. it displays as a Clip in my Event.
why is FCP X capturing my iSight footage but not my Dazzle footage?

I'd kinda doubt FCPX supports that capture device. I'd suggest using the Dazzle's software to capture your footage instead and then drag the results into an event.
