Problem conncecting to internet with wif card

My setup
Hardware: Pismo G3 Powerbook + Lucent Technologies/Wavelan/Orinoco Silver Wifi card + 3Com wifi router
Software: OS 10.3.9 + WirelessDriverBeta5.1dmg
The Pismo recognises the wi-fi card when I plug it in: an icon appears in the menu bar showing Lucent Technologies, Wavelan/IEE. The first sign that something is wrong is that both of these options are greyed out.
The installation of the WIrelessDriverBeta5.1.dmg software was successful.
Under System Preferences/Other, there is a new preference which is "WirelessConfig"
If I click on this, the WirelessConfig preferences panel opens up fine, but everything is greyed out. Thus I cannot key anything into the box entitled "Connect to wireless network named" nor is any signal strength shown.
Apart from the above, the two LEDs on the Wifi card are both off.
Please note that this wifi card works perfectly on a G3 Wallstreet with OS9.2 on it and quite separately, that I can connect to the internet via an ethernet cable connection to my G5 which then connects wirelessly to the router,
I have followed all the instructions on Sourceforge and Versiontracker relevant to my set-up but cannot see what I am doing wrong. Any help please would be very welcome as this is intensely frustrating.

That driver is a bit quirky.
You have to use System Preferences > Network > and establish it as an Ethernet network interface ( en1, en2 but not fw0, fw1 etc.) before anything else will work. From the sourceforge FAQ:
How do I configure the WirelessDriver now that I have installed it?
1) Open the NETWORK preferences pane, select the new EN1 (or EN2) interface as the active network setting and configure it appropriately for your network (e.g. using DCHP, enter the DNS server ip addresses for your internet service provider).
2) Open the WirelessConfig preference pane and enter the Network name (this is case sensitive) and the WEP key if using encryption. If you are using a non-Apple basestation, you may want to select the text version of the hex key (see below for more info).
Once enabled in this fashion, you tend not to have to go back to the Network preference pane for this reason again, and you tend to forget about this issue.

  • No internet with WiFi

Cannot connect to the internet with WiFi other than my own. With all other networks, I connect to WiFi, but not the modem. Getting a message that "WiFi has the self assigned IP address 169.254.3.132 and will not be able to connect to the internet." Using a 13" MBA, 2011, 1.8  i7, Mavericks 10.9.3. This is a recent problem, have used this machine for years with no issue. Help.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Using internet with wifi

How do you use the internet with wifi so that you don't need to have the data plan?

please read this article from the public knowledge base:

To sum up, you can't use Wi-Fi on a BlackBerry smartphone without the BlackBerry data plan.

  • [SOLVED] Share Ethernet Internet with Wifi AdHoc Network

After several hours of searching other similar threads, I cannot find anything which turns out to be useful for what I'm trying to do specifically.
I have a laptop with ethernet card and built-in wifi. With Arch Linux I have configured both before using both the ipconfig/iwconfig methods and using Wicd. I am currently connected to the internet using Wicd and Ethernet (only because Wicd is already installed and configured when I got this internet connection). It would violate the terms of my internet service here (in a dorm room through dorm sponsored internet) to connect a wireless router to the internet connection.
What I want to do then, is set up my laptop so that it accesses the internet through the ethernet connection, and shares it with my iPod Touch through an Adhoc configured on the wifi card. I believe this still may be a small violation of the terms of service with my provider, but I really just want to be able to update/download apps on my iPod.. not let the whole floor have internet for the low price of one room.
Thanks in advance for any help, let me know if I need to provide more specifics for what I'm trying to do.

you can use iwconfig to set up the ad hoc connection (i dont know enough about wicd to see if it'll work with it)
    iwconfig wlan0 up
    iwconfig wlan0 192.168.100.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
    iwconfig mode ad-hoc
    iwconfig wlan0 channel auto
    iwconfig wlan0 essid MYPC
you can then use your ipod to connect to this ad hoc network and assign the ipod an ip address 192.168.100.2, make sure to ping the ipod to see if its connected corrently or not.
you can then use iptables to NAT the connections, iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING  -s 192.168.100.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
make sure ip forwarding is enabled by using, echo  1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

  • Problems accessing the internet via wifi

I'm not able to access internet via wifi but am connected to my wifi network.
    No problems when using 3G
I guess it is a dns problem?
when i check the wifi settings IP address and subnet mask
have details but is blank for router, dns and search domains.
What details should I input there?
Would it mess anything up if I used the same settings that my iphone uses?
I know wifi is ok because I can download books to my ipad with stanza using wifi.
Sorry don't know too much about this sort of thing

Is their a limit to no. of devices that can connect?
Yes, this would be determined by the size of the IP pool allocated on your time capsule router. Ordinarily this should be large enough by default to accommodate the number of devices you have.
    Not sure where to check
"If DHCP is not working for you then you should check to see if your router is set to do DHCP and that MAC address filtering is not turned on"
*First, please note that if you aren't really familiar with network setup you should probably give Apple support a call and they can walk you through this.* See: http://www.apple.com/support/expert/
You can access your Time Capsule router using the Airport Utility which is found in the Applications/Utilities folder on your Macbook Pro. If you use this utility you can see how your router is setup. Post what you see here, i.e., Network name, radio mode, channel, Security password protection (WPA2 personal is best), etc. Of course, don't post any passwords.
Don't forget to check that the IP Address selector in your iPad WiFi setting for your network (which can be DHCP, BootP or Static) is set to DHCP.
I will turn Time capsule off for a while to try.
At this point it might also be a good idea to also go to Settings > General > Reset on your iPad and select "Reset Network Settings".

  • Problem connecting to internet with wired ethernet

Shortly after installing the Leopard 10.5.2 update, I could not connect to the internet through the wired ethernet connection. Connected wireless with no problem. Spent time with Apple tech. Determined that the machine was fine. Told to check the wall port. Had a windows PC connect fine through same cable and wall port. Also brought the MacBook to a different location. Connected to the ethernet port and connected to the internet successfully. Determined that the MacBook kept using an IP address of 192.168.1.103. This is the wrong address for my connection. The correct IP address is 172.16.7.1. Installed this address manually in the MacBook and established a connection. The MacBook cannot seem to connect automatically at this location. The Windows PC connects fine. The MacBook keeps coming up with the wrong IP address. Any idea what could be causing this??

The IP address when connected to a router will start with 192.168.x.x.
When connected to a modem you will get a different address.
When you connect to a cable modem for the first time it looks at the Media Access Control (MAC) address of whatever is connected.
It is a unique number for your device.
It only attaches to one device and provides an internet connection to that device by way of an IP address.
If you wish to connect another device and get an IP address for that new device, you need the modem to start over, since it has a monogamous relationship with the connected device.
In order to have the modem drop its relationship, it needs to be restarted.
This is not true of a dsl modem.
It sounds like your modem has linked with the MAC address of the router.
In order to connect directly to the modem and get it to link to your computer, you need to unplug the router from power.
    Disconnect its ethernet cable.
Restart the modem after about 15 seconds and wait until it restarts, about 2 minutes.
Then reconnect the modem and you will likely be able to connect to the internet.

  • Help with Wifi card install

I bought a wifi card for my 2009 Mac Pro. I am going to install it but I need to know which of the three antenna wires I need to connect? One person said 1 and 2, but one other site said the correct one was 2 and 3.
Has anyone here done this and know which cables to connect? Any help I would appreciate.
Again I am installing the wifi card in a brand new Mac Pro.

Here is a article on installing in previous mac pro:

  • Problem with wifi card??

I just got my Touchpad back today after having sent it out once already for screen repair (blown pixels), now I cannot get this one locate any wifi networks, I cannot get past the third screen on setup (searching for networks). I tried everything from webos doctor 3.0.2 back to 3.0.4 and even trying to change my routers security settings. Under the device info, it is showing all zeros for my MAC address...online support got me nowhere and now have to wait for a callback from a specialist...has anyone else had this issue?
Here's to hoping I do not have to send it back....again....

After being bounced around all god's creation I finally got through to a product specialist regarding this. They wanted to do the advanced replacement..which involved them sending me a new one and me sending the old one back..all while they hold $365 (over double what I paid) instead I opted for the standard service no way am I letting anyone hold (regardless me getting it back or not) that much money for something I paid only 160 for....over all though they managed to get things done promptly

  • Need help connecting to internet with wireless card

I am currently able to connect 4 Mac laptops and 1 G5 desktop to my Airport Extreme without any problems. I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a Dell Truemobile 1400 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI card that recognizes my AE and connects to it, but I can't get it to connect to the internet. I've tried using the internet connection setup wizard for an isp with username and password but it wants to configure a dialup connection. I've tried just double-clicking on my Internet Explorer icon but it won't connect. I know I've overlooked something(s) but I would like to know if there a procedure that someone can walk me through to get connected. I've also tried using a Belkin USB wireless adapter which also recognizes the Airport, but I still can't get connected. Any help would be greatley appreciated. Steve

What "bands" does a Truemobile 1400 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI card support? 802.11a/b or 802.11b/g ?
Start Menu -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig
Are you getting a valid IP address for your private LAN ?

  • Ipad2 will not connect to internet with wifi

Can anybody help me please. I bought a beautiful 32gb WiFi only ipad yesterday and cannot get it to connect to my home WiFi.  It shows a full strength signal but I cannot open email or Safari etc.
I see that there are a lot of people with this problem - what I would like is to hear from someone who HAS fixed it - and how.  My problem is that I do not have the knowledge to understand what people mean when they are talking about reconfiguring their routers etc -- can someone lead me through a solution in "Computers for Dummies"  fashion??  My router is a Speedtouch and my broadband provider AOL.  Would be most grateful to hear from you.
    Lisa

hi! i have the same issue with my ipad 2 16gb which i bought about 3months ago. i've been using this with my laptop's internet sharing wireless connection and it's been working real fine until i updated my device's firmware from 4.3.3 to 4.3.5 iOS. my iTunes stopped working normally altogether and started freezing and it drove me nuts! from then on i cannot access the internet through wi-fi for a week now and all my documents disappeared  to because i have to sign in to my accounts (like newzik, file apps, documents) but sorry me, i cannot get connected to the internet. i just hope apple would take action on these issues. i don't think it has something to do with my laptops wireless network device because even i'm outdoors i cannot access even public wi-fi networks. my ipad 2 connects to a wi-fi netowrk but cannot access the internet. i tried resetting and restoring my devicce but nothing worked. i have an MSI A6200 laptop on windows 7 64bit by the way.

  • Strange display problem on the Internet with jpgs

    Hi,
For some time now I have problems with jpgs on some Internet sites. They don't show up properly. But only on this MAC, every other computer is ok. Here is a screencap of what I see:
    http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2690530
It happens only on specific websites but now it also happens on MY OWN website (http://www.patrickeischen.com)! I didn't change a thing on this page, it was ok 'til now.
I use Firefox & Safari. Can anybody please help me?
Message was edited by: Danielle Kamp

    Hi Danielle:
Cant use the link to your screencap, -wants login info.
What do the jpgs look like? Sometimes I get a small square and question mark on some webpages where images should show but I just fault the webpage, or internet. Sometimes a reload works.
Sounds like a software glitch on your PM G5, Have you repaired permissions recently?

  • HT201699 having problem to connect internet with virgin simcard

hi, I bought virgin contract with blackberry 9300 but when i insert my virgin sim card in Iphone 3g I am unable to connect internet, can some one help me with this issue so i can connect with internet. any help much appreciate. Thanks. .

    Hi,
    Thanks for your question.
According to your description, I am not quite sure of your network deployment. I would appreciate it if you can post
a figure of your network topology.
In addition, I recommend you to check the common suggestions below:
You can configure the default gateway to 192.168.2.3, then tracert a public website, such as tracert google.com, then check the result.
In addition, you can disable the firewall and run “ping 192.168.2.3” at the command prompt. If it is unable to ping, you can check the route table or
ARP cache. If it is able to ping, you can try to ping the public IP of the ADSL modem. If it is unable to ping the public IP address, please contact your ISP for assistance.
By the way, based on your question, it is more related to network, I will move it to the network forum. Thanks for your understanding and support.
    Best regards,
    Susie
