Problem Connecting Linksys WRT54G to Arris TM402P/100 Cable Modem

The Problem
Cannot get an internet connection attempting to install a Linksys WRT54G router between an Arris TM402P/100 cable modem and the local network.
Prior Configuration
Previously had DSL, with the Linksys WRT54G wireless router between the DSL modem and the local network, which worked perfectly.
New Configuration
This friend recently changed his broadband from DSL to Comcast cable, and he also has phone and television service over the same connection.  The installation tech connected the cable modem directly to a desktop computer and left the Linksys router out.
The direct connection between the cable modem and the computer works fine, but he and his wife each have laptops and would like to us the Linksys router to connect wirelessly.
This is the TCP/IP configuration of the FAMILY workstation connected to Comcast
directly through Arris TM402P/110 cable modem:

I cannot find a configuration on the Linksys WRT54G that will allow me to connect to the internet through the Arris TM402P/110 modem.  Have tried (1) setting the Linksys to use a dynamic WAN address, (2) setting the Linksys to static IP 67.185.155.0 with TCP/IP settings taken from the above configuration, (3) cloning the MAC address of the desktop computer's NIC and trying both (1) and (2) again.
The error message says that the network cable is not connected.  Is it possible that the connection between the router and cable modem requires a cross-over cable?
Any suggestions?

on the router's ui... keep the internet type to dhcp....clone the mac address and then do a power cycle...ensure that the modem is completely powered off during the power cycle...if you have a battery back - up , remove the battery...after a minute , put back the battery and then plug in the power cable in the modem...
let me know if this helps you....

  • Problems connecting IOS devices with new Comcast wireless cable modem?

Just installed a new cable modem from Comcast, it is their new high speed unit manufactured by Cisco. of the three IOS devices I've tried, all running currently the OS , are having problems connecting with  the error "Unable to join the network " Home-XXXX" if you keep asking it may connect but I have to be persistant.  My Devices are iPad 4 g Retna with 30pin connection, an iTouch ,latest model with camers, and current iPad mini. is it me or the modem?

You have probably already solved this issue, but I would hide the comcast wifi network (dont broadcast ssid) and make the password very hard. Make sure that put it on channel that does not conflict with your Airport Extream.
Connect the Comcast modem/router to the airport extream's wan port with an ethernet cable.
Comcast usually ships the DHCP enabled. Use the comcast DHCP server for your airport.
Configure the airport extream to "create a network" set the network to "bridge mode".
Name your network, broadcast the ssid all on the airport. Now all your devices will connect everytime. Use can use the Comcast "private" wireless network for maintenance, etc.
    Just some thoughts... good luck

  • The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken.

At random points throughout my laptop usage, I randomly disconnect from the internet and receive these 2 messages:
    1. The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken.
    2. The default gateway is not available.
It fixes the issue for a short period of time, but constantly happens. This is really starting to annoy me. I have no problems on any other internet, and other people i live with are connected with no issues to the internet. I have tried a number of solutions
online that has "worked" for others to no success such as resetting the router, fooling around with command prompt, and changing the performance settings to not drop internet when low on power. Does anyone have a solution for my technical problems?
I am running Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo ideapad that is less than a year old. I will be honest I am not a very knowledgeable person when it comes to computers, so please use simplified explanations.

Hi all.  Can someone tell me how connect my MacBook directly to my DSL cable modem bypassing my wireless connection?  thanks in advance.

  • Can't get Internet to Linksys WRT54G using ARRIS TM502 modem (Cable ISP)

I just switched from DSL to Cable and now i can't get internet to the Linksys router. I can connect to it from a wireless laptop but just not get on the internet I've read other posts about doing the "clone mac" address and doing the power cycle but still cannot get the Linksys to respond. I enabled the WRT54G to clone the mac address and have spent about 10 hours in two days trying to get this to work and looking online, etc.... Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, leo

After talking to Comcast again and getting another support person who didn't seem to know much, I decided to take matters in my own hands.  I connected new Linksys wrt160n to Arris tm502g, but left router power off.  I then did reset button on Arris modem for 10+ seconds and let it reset.  I powered up router and then powered up PC that I had plugged in port1.  When I went to status on router I finally had gotten IP addresses from Comcast.  I then plugged my switch into port 4 and checked other devices in the house and they were ok.
Hard to believe that no one from Comcast or Linksys seemed to have a clue on what to do when I talked to them.
Thanks for your help.  Hopefully someone else will find this if they need it.

  • Persistent problems with Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router

I'm currently running Vista with a Linksys WRT54GS router. As earlier discussed in this forum I am still having intermittent problems with the ATV taking down my network. Anyone else experienced this and come up with a sure fire fix?
When it's working I like the set up but I have to say, it is not nearly stable enough to be an everyday solution for getting my music and photos to my living room.
    Thanks.

Hi, I am having the same problem -- my 2WIRE modem from AT&T recently blew up. So, I purchased the WRT54GS. As soon as I reconnected the AppleTV to the new router via a wireless connection, all of my machines (Mac and PC) lost their internet connections. I'm seriously considering going out and getting another 2WIRE.

  • Problems Connecting to Airport Directly With an Ethernet Cable

    Hello,
I have a Time Warner cable modem connected to an airport, and everything is working fine for a wireless web connection. But in order to log on to VPN for work, I need to have a cable connection, not a wireless one.
I turned off the airport connection on my computer and first I tried using an ethernet cable to connect my laptop to the Airport. That didn't work. Then I tried connecting my laptop directly to the cable modem, and that didn't work either.
I used to have a DSL modem in my apartment, and if I turned my airport connection off and plugged into the DSL modem, I was still able to access the internet no problem.
Is there something different about plugging into the airport or the cable modem? Do I need change any settings on my computer? Do I need to reboot my computer, or the airport or the cable modem or all three?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alice

    Hi Alice,
I too have a Time Warner cable Modem and use a VPN with a Ethernet cable connected from my laptop to my Airport extreme. I did not switch ISP's but did switch hardware from a 2Wire portal to the Airport extreme. Could only access the internet and not connect to my Company's network via a VPN. Took a few days but I finally figured out a VPN solution using an ethernet cable hookup to Airport extreme from my work laptop. You will need port setting(s) from your IT department. Below are a few tips.
    1) Open Airport Utility and double click on your extreme network.
    2) At the top move from Airport and click on Internet.
    3) Once there, click on NAT (Network Address Translation)
    4) Check mark "enable default host" but use your static IP adapter address from your work PC/Laptop and not the default (use IPCONFIG to obtain)
    5) Check mark "enable NAT port mapping protocol" and at bottom click on configure port mapping at bottom of NAT
    6) From there your in the advance mode of your Airport Utility, and you add a
service and port(s). I did not click on any service but only defined using my company name and added the port settings.
7 I set the public TCP and UDP ports to 80
    8) The private IP address matched the IP address in the Internet NAT setting I mentioned in #4 above.
    8) The private TCP and UDP ports are the ports to open for your VPN which I got from my IT department. This can be a 5 digit number where mine starts with a 4.
The above worked for my ethernet connect from my work laptop to the Airport Extreme. I now can connect to my company's network using VPN and continue to work from home time to time. 8-)
Good Luck. My next step is to see if my work laptop can use the same settings for my VPN when I go wirelessly with my work Laptop.
    Good Luck....Reener

  • Plug-in order for connecting to internet via AP Extreme with cable modem?

    Help!
My internet's been a bit slow the past few days. I was scared to do anything because when I first got my Airport Extreme, it took me several days to figure out how to get connected, and it was highly frustrating. I remember that there was always a blinking orange light and some issue the utility couldn't identify, and the ultimate fix had something to do with unplugging and replugging my cable modem, but I'm not sure at what step in the process I did this.
Now, I tried unplugging and replugging the modem and though my base station was showing up in the list of networks under the Airport icon at the top of the screen, it kept saying there was an error when I tried to connect. Airport Utility wasn't even finding any base stations at all, so I tried several orders of unplug/replug to no avail. Each time, the green light was coming on but my computer couldn't find the base station and wouldn't connect to the network. I then tried the reset button (5 seconds). When I reset, the utility could find the base station, but I'm back to blinking amber and when I try to configure the base station, it says "the wireless network could not be found." Does anyone here know the magic order of the plugs? I'm using an Ethernet cable to connect from modem to base station and running Tiger on a Powerbook G4. Any help would really be appreciated!!

Is this a cable modem with a usb port? If so you are correct. It doesn't connect easily. You're better off with a modem that has an ethernet port. Now if you are referring to a Sprint Novatel U720 USB modem I can tell you it works.

  • OfficeJet J6450 - Printer connects wirelessly but doesn't print post cable modem replacment

Equipment: My printer is an OfficeJet J6450. I run Windows Vista, current update.
Likely triggering event: I replaced my docsis 3.0 modem with a doscis 2.0 modem. The ISP remained the same. All other computer software and firewall remained the same.
Malfunction: After the cable modem replacement, I found that I could no longer print to my HP OfficeJet 6450. I would get an error in the printer window "Error - printing."  After restarting after the initial error appeared, I would get the error "Error - sent to printer."
    What I did:
At first I uninstalled and re-installed the HP software for the printer (complete package with exceptions of PhotoSmart and HP customer monitoring program).
Using the printer's network connection wizard, I entered the wireless router password to the printer. At first I didn't get a connection. Then I restarted both the computer and the printer. I also returned to the network default setting on the printer, and repeated the configuring the network. The connection finally succeeded.
The network self-test page and the printer's network wizard confirm the connection. The printer's digital display and the HP diagnostic utility also confirmed the connection. But the diagnostic utility can't print a test page and throws up an error - "Test print failed."
The disappointing result:  I still cannot get anything to print wirelessly.
...Thanks in advance for your suggestions to get my printer back up and running...
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Printers and delete all instances of the printer.
    Next, re-add the printer:
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing.  Get the IP address from a Wireless Netowork Test on the front of the printer (usually in the Network menu).
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Printers.
    3. Click the Add a printer
    4. Select Local printer
    5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
    6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
    7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
    10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
    11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
    12. Click Finish.

  • Connecting a wireless router to my existing cable modem

Hi, I am trying to figure out how to network a wireless router (Actiontec GT704WG) for my girlfriend's Dell laptop to what I currently have, a cable modem connected to my iMac. Can anyone help with this? I'm a novice to setting up any network connections.
    Thanks,
    Chris

I'm not an expert, but when I got my wireless router (a Netgear), I had to call my ISP (Comcast) after I connected the router to the modem via ethernet cable so their equipment/servers would recognize it.
    My connections are:
    wall -> modem (cat 5);
    modem -> router (ethernet);
    router -> iMac (ethernet - my choice; could be wireless);
and router -> wireless to laptop (which could be your GF's Dell).
You will also most likely need to configure and set up your router online since most of them do not include automatic setup software for Macs. You should be able to find the instructions in the owners' manual and/or setup guide. It's quite simple to do.

  • Problem with Linksys WRT54GS router? Please help.

Alright, so I have the WRT54GS, and for the longest time after I bought it, it worked just fine, but I've been experiencing problems lately. We have 2 computers running off the router. One is a wired connection, and mine is wireless, which I'm starting to hate. So whenever I'm playing any kind of game that takes up a lot of bandwidth, such as Call of Duty 4, it's been really laggy, and I get connection interruptions quite often. It disconnects me from all my online programs and, i have to wait about 20 seconds and the connection returns again. It's almost as if the router is just under strain and temporarily gives out? It happens if the other computer is running, or if mine is the only one being used. I really hope this problem is normal and fixable, because I don't have the money for a new router. So I'm wondering, can anyone help me? Please, any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Try the steps below to see if it will help.
There are many reasons for a poor wireless connection, and many ways to solve this issue.
    1.      Give your network a unique SSID and do not use Linksys and set your SSID Broadcast to enable.
    2.      You can also try A different channel. There are 11 channels and  1, 6 or 11 is better
    3.      You can try raising your router approximately 4-6 feet above the floor and make sure the antennas are vertical.
    4.      access your wireless software by going to your Profile or preferred networks, if any are named Linksys or ones that you do not know please delete them. Go to the settings or properties and check the information to make sure it is correct.
    5.      See if there are any updated drivers to download.
    6.      Try to use WPA encryption if you can
*** As always upgrade to the latest firmware
    Good Luck,

  • OSX 10.4.6, 10.4.8 Not Connecting LinkSys WRT54G

    Problem:
MacBooks running 10.4.6 and 10.4.8 don't connect to the internet, wired or wireless. Problem appears to be in DHCP. MacBooks only show the 169.124.167.29. Linksys shows the Mac has been issued a 192... address. If I manually enter the 192... on the Mac I can get the linksys admin page but still no internet.
On 10.4.6 I seem to get a wireless connection but no DHCP.
    On 10.4.8 I get nothing.
Everything works with Windows and with Linux--wired or wireless--everything.
The Macbook with 10.4.6 used to work wireless before I upgraded the linksys firmware.

If I manually enter the 192... on the Mac I can get the linksys admin page but still no internet.
By typing that into Safari or such, that means you're connected to the Router at least, but you need to use that number for the Router setting in Networks>TCP/IP>
Try full Manual setup there, (not DHCP with Manual Address)
IP: 192.x.y.z where x and y are the same as the Router's IP, and z is a different number than any other z numbers on the Router... 5 above another one you find should work.
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.whatever got Safari to open the admin page.

  • Problem Extending Linksys WRT54GS wireless with AEBS

    Hello,
I know this post might seem redundant, but I really can't figure out what's wrong.
    Here is my Configuration
    Linksys Router :
    WRT54GS v7 firmware :7.50.2
I tried the step-by-step instructions that i found here :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5338208
    Same SSID
WPA for encryption, because I read somewhere that with the new firmware, it was accepted.
And what I get, is the following :
I have a steady Green light on the AEBS, when configure for WDS.
But as soon as I get the green light, my powerbook can't connect to the internet anymore via the AEBS, but if I turn the AEBS off, then I the airport of my powerbook switches back to the routeur wifi and I have internet again.
I'd really appreciate any input, even if it is to tell me that it is not possible to make it work.
    Thanks

Yes, I understand what you are saying.
So you think that it should work, right ?
Doesn't the green light on the Airport tell me that the WDS settings are at least well configured ?
I guess what I don't really now how to set, is the internet tab, in the airport utility.
When I select using DHCP, it doesn't work : I don't get a green light.
When I select manually here are the setting I am putting :
    IP adress : 192.168.1.130
    Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
    Router : 192.168.1.1
And I filled the DNS fields, with the same DNS present on the linksys page,
What should I do for the "Connexion Sharing" field ?
    Thanks again

  • Connection dropping WRT54G on two ISP shaw cable and Telus Adsl

Hi, hope someone could help me fix this problem i have been having for over 5 months now.
Randomly my internet connection on both my wireless and wired computers will drop and i cannot access the internet OR the router setup page (192.etc...) unless i power cycle the modem.  when this happens my wired computer reports that it is still connected to my network but the speed has dropped to 1mbps.  when directly connected to the modem i have no problems
my router is a wrt54G v8 (just updated the firmware) currently i am using telus as my ISP
I have spent HOURS on the phone with linksys support staff.  i have done everything including:
    changing the standard IP adress
playing with the MTU size and reducing it to as low as 1200
    adjusting the fragmentation threshold\
    adjusting the RTS threshould
changing the connection type from automatic (DHCP) to a PPPoE but when trying to connect on the status page the router replies "could not get an IP adress from ISP" even after a full powercycle
the only thing i have tried cloning the mac adress but when i do this Telus's sign up page (enter username and password) appears which leads me to their setup page IE no internet connection.  however i could be doing this wrong.
I have read that putting a hub between the router and the modem works
Please does anyone have suggestions or fixes??!!?? linksys is going to replace my router but i would like to try and fix it first.
