Problem connecting MacBook to a Sharp video projector

One of the great things I like about Macs is the easy way they (usually) connect to a video projector. Unlike a lot of my friends who run PCs with Windows I never had any problems whatsoever connecting my MacBook to a projector at the university and start my presentations.
Until today that is.
I tried to connect my MacBook with Apple's mini-DVI to VGA adapter to a Sharp ("Notevision") video projector and although the MacBook had the projector (even with its correct name "PG-M20X" and available resolution settings) listed under "Displays" immediately, I couldn't get the projector to show any more than "no signal" whatever input source I chose...
What did I do wrong? Or is it the projector that is somehow "incompatible"?! Please help!

Maybe this could help as well:
After we tried several things with the MacBook (reboot, "detect displays" etc.), we successfully connected a Powerbook (15", FireWire 800, late 2003) to the projector, using Apple's DVI-VGA Adapter.
So that did work out fine, but the MacBook didn't work on the projector. The cable that came with the projector was a VGA--DVI-A cable: there were only a few pins on the DVI-end of it going into the DVI-Connector on the projector. Could it have something to do with that? But why didn't the Powerbook have any problems connecting to the projector then?

However, I still don't get a view of anything on the desktop except for the standard Apple swirl.
Can you drag windows to the other display?
In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, you can drag the display pictures to match the actual arrangement, drag the menu bar to the other display, or enable mirroring.

  • Problems connecting my  MacBook Pro to a video projector

I have a MacBook Pro. I have used it many times to connect to a video projector and give presentations in my classroom. Lately, it is hit or miss concerning whether the laptop will give a signal to the computer. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I have followed the instructions in the MacBook guide.(Start with projector and laptop off, connect, turn on, etc. )
I am using the DVI to VGA adapter. I have also tried to use the function keys and manually tried to get it to detect displays. Can't think of what to do next. I gave up and hooked up a Windows computer and it worked.
Could it be the adapter? Does anyone have any ideas I can try? Thanks!

I have problems too with some projectors and the DVI--VGA adapter that came with my MBP. The projector is recognized by the computer, but does not show any signal.
With the help of Stéphane Madrau, who has written the excellent tool SwitchResX, I found out that the projector reports that it takes digital input when I connect the MacBook Pro, but analog when I connect it to my 12" PBG4. From the DDC information (collected with SwitchResX):
    MacBook Pro, DVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Digital
    PBG4, miniDVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Analog input with: 0.700V / 0.300V
    Separate Sync
    Composite Sync
Given that the VGA cable is analog only, I would think that the MBP tries (or rather, does) output digital signals only, which don't make it into the VGA cable. If I find a solution I will post it here.
The clue was that the computer did not report any vertical scan frequencies for the external display, while it did so for a projector that worked.

  • Problems connecting macbook to epson ex70 projector

I hope someone might have some insight on this. I'm trying to hookup my macbook to an epson ex70 projector via hdmi. I'm also trying to run in closed clamshell mode. The problem is that it will recognize the computer and display for about 5 seconds and then loose the connection. Then it will kick back on and then shut off. If I open the computer then it will remain on but there is no mirroring to the projector dispay and I cannot get any video to play full screen on the projector. I have no problem running it to my sharp hdtv in this way but for some reason the projector seems to have a problem. Any ideas?

Is the MacBook connected to its AC power adapter? It needs to be for closed clamshell to work.

  • Update: audio problems connecting macbook pro to insignia TV: resolved

There have been posts from users who have expressed frustration that they cannot get audio when they attempt to connect their macbook pro to an Insignia TV.
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=10830387
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2192206
Insignia customer service also attempts to state that the pre-April 2010 macbook pros cannot get audio output to the TV, because the units are designed to get the audio on the same HDMI and no alternative audio input is available on the TV.
    http://community.insigniaproducts.com/t5/Televisions/Connecting-MacBook-Pro-to-T V/td-p/5564
For the Insignia models (from 2010 onwards and possible some from 2009 as well), there is a simple workaround that does not seem to be published elsewhere on the internet (as far as I can see):
Use the HDMI port 1 only (audio does not work with port 2, port 3 or port 4) to connect your macbook and you will receive 1080p video signal.
Use a mini stereo audio cable (example link below) and connect your macbook audio output to a designated green color coded audio port on the TV located right next to the VGA. You will receive full stereo audio.
Example link for mini stereo audio cable:

I recently acquired a new Insignia TV and had sound trouble.  I went to Best Buy to inquire about the cable in the link above and the sales manager had doubts.  He recommended a RCA cable with a male connection at both ends.  The RCA jack is on the bottom edge of the TV display next to the VGA connection.  The sound worked perfectly using the RCA cable from the headphone jack on the Mac.  I connected the video with a HDMI adapter from the monitor mirroring port.

  • Problems connecting Macbook to Infocus X2 Projector

I'm trying to set up my Macbook to project through my Infocus X2 projector using an Infocus Liteshow wireless card.
I can get the screen to project but the visual comes up looking kind of like a 'negative' image. I've fiddled with my display settings but can't seem to fix it.
I don't think the problem is with the projector itself because it projects fine from my other DVD player.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Try turning on the White on Black option in the Seeing section of the Universal Access pane of System Preferences when you need to present; this will invert the color of all displays currently connected to the machine.

  • Troubleshoot Connecting MacBook Pro to Mitsubishi XD80U Projector

I am having trouble with the signal from a new MacBook Pro 15" to a Mitsubishi XD80U Projector using the DVI to VGA adapter. The signal projected is distorted, grainy, and jumpy. The left side of the projected picture has white lines appearing as if the picture is moving fast to the side. The projector menu, however, is clear and has no distortion. Display settings are at the Mitsubishi optimum, 1024 X 768 with 60 Hz refresh rate.
This same projector works fine with a Mac laptop on 10.4.8 (S video cable) and a PowerBook G4 10.3.9 (VGA adapter). Apple thought it was the DVI to VGA adapter, but a replacement did not fix.
This same MacBook Pro connects to a 23" Apple Display throug the DVI port with no problem.
    Any suggestions???

    Hello Dave Lorelie,
It sounds like you were able to use your TV as an external display but now its not working for some reason. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article about troubleshooting issues like this:

  • Problems Connecting Macbook to TV

I'm trying to connect my 2007 MacBook to my CRT Sony Wega TV. I'm using a mini-dvi to video adapter. It doesn't matter if I use a yellow rca or svideo, the picture on my TV is all black and wavy. I can vaguely make out the picture on my TV, but it's mostly indistinguishable. I've tried changing the resolution settings but nothing fixes the problem. Can anyone help me with this?

All I have is RCA and S-Video. My TV is an old beast. I haven't upgraded yet. The adapter I'm using is supposedly designed for connecting to analog TVs like mine, but when I do all I get are black wavy lines moving across the screen.

  • Having problems connecting macbook pro to my tv

i am trying to connect my macbook pro (only bought a few months ago to my LG 42 " flat screen tv. i know that i am quite useless with all things computer but i have managed to get my husbands older macbook to work no problem (but his headphone socket is broken so no sound apart from the macbook itself- a little quiet). however i have bout a mini display port to HDMI cable i have also tried mini dispaly port to DVI adapter and a VGA adapter. the tv recognizers the macbook pro as the purple screen saver (the one that looks like a galaxy and comes up when you are downloading new software......sorry i told you i don't know much about this) shows up on the tv but the dvd, or page that i have open on my mac doesn't come up. please can anyone help as i really want to watch some tv programs from the internet on my tv asap.

It sounds like you're making progress. The problem, I think, is that you need to set your displays to "mirror" each other. For instructions, in Finder, choose Help and search for "Setting up multiple displays to show the same image"

  • Problems connecting MacBook Pro to Apple TV

not sure if anyone else is having this issue, but my macbook pro won't connect to my apple tv via airplay anymore. My college has really spotty wifi and it's extremely selective sometimes (one time it wouldn't let me log into the site that i put in my schedule for work, it just kept refreshing the site after i would hit submit) so i'm not sure if this is a software problem or if its my wifi. I can still connect on my iphone just not my laptop.

That would be a wifi issue, mirroring requires a lot more resources from the network and will need a stable/consistent connection. There would likely be a lot of other activity occurring as well so that will impact performance.

  • Problems connecting macbook to a LG TV

    Hi all,
I'm writing because I recently acquired a LG TV, exactly the model RZ 26LZ55 and I tried to use it with my black macbook (4.1) like a second monitor. I tried to connect it using the miniDVI to VGA Apple's adaptor and a VGA to DVI-I cable. At first it worked during few minutes, but when I closed the laptop and opened again I didn't been able to see the image again...
The macbook recognizes the TV and I can adjust the resolution and move the mouse around the two desktops, but the TV is entering to DPM mode (Power Saving Mode) and doesn't display anything. At first I think that was a TV problem, but my surprise was when I saw that the TV works with any other computer (I tried with 2 diferent PC's), so I think that's a macbook problem...
I've read a lot of discussions talking about this problem, but I couldn't found the solution anywhere and in the mac support or manual don't appears it...
    Can somebody help me?
    Thanks a lot!

    Solved!
I changed the miniDVI-VGA adaptor and used a miniDVI-DVI with a DVI-D to DVI-D dual link cable. I know that's not necessary to use a dual link cable, but I found a cheap cable and I bought it. Now it works perfectly.
It seems to be the Digital to Analog conversion and the DVI-I cable (I don't know if the signal entering to the TV was digital or analog, because de DVI-I works in the two modes...).
Anyway, I'm very disappointed with Apple, because I've spend more than 40€ (that's like 55$) buying other cables and adaptors that now I don't need, and in any manual or guide says that the DVI connexion of the adaptor is DVI-D...
Well, thanks Zlig and frederic, you've been very helpful!

  • Connecting Macbook Air 2011 to Epson projector for Keynote

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect my Macbook Air 2011 to a brand new Epson (Powerlite 1760W) projector for Keynote presentations.
I bought the recommended Monoprice mini cable from the Apple store but I can only plug it into my MBA (small squarish socket), the other end dosen't connect to the projector. It seems the projector wants a VGA cable into it.
I'm lost. Do I still need the UBS cable between the two? Do I need a USB / VGA cable instead?
    Thanks in advance.

    Alison,
In looking at the technical specifications (on Epson's site) for this device it would appear that you can make HDMI work - http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Product.do?sku=V11H361120&BV_UseBVCookie= yes
That being said, the HDMI end on the adapter and on the projector are most likely female. So you'll need an HDMI cable (the length will vary on how far the machine is away from the projector) but I suspect a 3 or 6 footer would work just fine. The cable is a male-to-male.

  • Unable to connect Macbook Pro to Sharp Aquos TV through thunderbolt HDMI

I have a brand-spanking new Macbook pro 15" Retina with Thunderbolt
A new moshi HDMI connector, and new MediaBridge hdmi cable connected to my Sharp Aquos TV and it's as if its not plugged in.
I've read a lot of helpful sites with instructions on how to do this and this just isn't working.
    What am I doing wrong?

If you cannot use nslookup <PrinterIP> and get a name back, Bonjour (aka mDNS) is being blocked by the router.

  • Problem connecting Macbook Pro with WRT160n wireless

My roommate and I recently got WRT160n, and she has a PC and her connection was fine. But for my Macbook, whenever I try to connect to the network and put in my password (the one that I set up) it says that the password is incorrect. I'm not sure what the problem is. I tried configuring with the 192.168.1.1 thing, but that didn't help me much either (unless I was doing it wrong.) Help?

Make sure that the wireless password is correct ....also disable all firewall on the MAC computer .... & check that you are able to connect the network or not ....
If so then try to ping the DG ....
