Problem connecting my Macs

I have 2 macs, 1 new macbook and 1 older G4 iMac. Both running the latest and greatest software update downloads. They both connect to my DSL via a new Airport Extreme basestation. (Macbook wirelessly, iMac via ethernet).
I can't seem to connect 1 mac to the other going either direction.
I've tried it with the OS X firewalls off, on, personal file sharing checked on on both. I've added 192.168.0.1 to the dns on both macs.
Both macs connect to the internet with no problem. Surf the web, e-mail, etc.
What am I doing wrong? Why can't I get 1 to connect to the other??

Macnewbeez,
It sounds like you have everything set-up correctly. You can try to ping one computer to the other by going to the network utility and under the ping tab enter in the other machines IP address and then clicking ping. I would verify that the computers have different share names in the sharing preference pane in System Preferences. Additionally, there is a knowledge base article that describes how to share files in OS X (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461), as well as links to each specific topic.

HI I am having problem connecting my mac and iphone6 through Air Drop

You don't give any information about your Mac but note the quote below which states that it must be a 2012 or later model with Yosemite installed. The quote is from Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices - Apple Support which also contains some other things that may help.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.

  • Problems connecting multiple macs to an Airport Extreme network.

I think this problem is similar to a previous post, but is individual in some ways.
I have 2 Airport Extreme basestations covering a large flat connected by Ethernet extending a single network. I did try to extend the network wirelessly, but this was plagued with problems where the network would work for 10 mins, then drop out as I think the basestations are slightly too far apart.
Connected to the network are a number of machines:
Wirelessly we have 3x iPhones, 1x G4 Cube, 1x iMac (current model), 2x MacBook Pro (previous model) & 1x PC.
Wired via a hub is an Apple TV, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Denon Home Cinema Amp, PS2
For aprox 6 months I have had major problems connecting all the wireless machines at the same time. I have played around with the security as per previous posts with varying degrees of success.
I seem to have the most problems with the iMac. The iMac will not join the network when there is any form of wireless security. Every time I try to set up a password it hangs when trying to join and I finally get the "There was a error joining xxxx network".
After more playing around I managed to get all the machines working by having no security on the network and locking the network down by MAC addresses.
Since last Thursday I now have a new problem. The iMac joins and stays on the network perfectly, but the second my second MacBook Pro is switched on and joins the network, the internet connection on the iMac drops out. In addition, as we use the iMac as a media server, all other machines connected to the iMac for either file sharing or iTunes sharing then get the error "the remote machine is failing to respond. Please check firewall settings if there are any". What is strange is that the iMac remains on the network, full signal, independent IP address and the second the MacBook Pro is switched off, works perfectly again.
I have tried wiping both the iMac & the MacBook Pro and re-installing their operating systems, but this only solves the problem for aprox 24 hours then all of a sudden the issue re-appears.
    Can anyone out there help?

Let's double-check the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, check the following settings:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • I continuously get this error: "There was a problem connecting to .mac.  The request timed out"

I don't have a .mac acct - never have had one.  I have moved my Aperture library to an external harddrive - and changed that to the library.  It seems like I started having this problem around that time but I'm not sure.  When I get the error I click "OK" and it goes away, only to re-pop a minute later.  Tried running the reset permissions thing a few times.  The only response I found in the forums was from a couple years ago where they WERE trying to connect to .mac
    Aperture 3.1.2

Strange, I got this error for the first time last night.  I have a 27" iMac (late 2010 model); with latest Aperture.  I recently added a Flickr account (have had a Facebook account on there for some time).  I was uploading some to my flickr account, and noticed that even though the "use actual size" setting was used, it was uploading tiny thumbnails and not the full version.
It was after this, that I got that error.  I haven't tried it again, as I'm now on my macbook at work.  Will try again tonight.
I've also, NEVER had a .mac account, so no possibility of it being a legacy account.

  • TS1317 Having problem connecting wi-fi to my Mac pro.  Followed all the steps.  Any suggestions of what I can try next?

Hi, Having problem connecting my Mac Pro to Wi-Fi.  Followed all the steps.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    Hi Sandra,
    Have you tried this?
Instead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Connecting a Mac to a Window's 2008 small business server

I'm looking to purchase an iMac to use at work. Everyone else in the office uses a PC and are connected to our current Window's 2008 server. I would be the only person using a Mac. Is there any way to connect a Mac to the server?

There should be no problems connecting the Mac to a Windows server for file sharing. I do it every day. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1568
If there are Windows-based programs that you will need to use, you may need to run Windows on the Mac for those programs, but there are several very practical ways to accomplish that.
    Regards.

  • Update to iOS 8.1.1., no connection to Mac FaceTime

After updating one of my iPad to 8.1.1, I have lost possibility to connect through FaceTime with my MacBook, but I keep connecting to other iPad (with old 7.0.6) without issues. The other iPad with 7.0.6 still connects with MacBook (Mountain Lion). Under "contacts", when I tip on my Macbook, there is not the symbol for the FaceTime. FaceTime is active in my MacBook too. Any ideas

    sberman,
I have different iPads and one MacBook… I am not trying to connect myself with the same iPad , but trying to connect from my iPad with 8.1.1 to my Mac (Mountain Lion). It's something very normal to do, e.g. when traveling and calling home...
My second iPad is not yet updated (it still has 7.0.6) and has no problems connecting to Mac...
Yes, if I tip any of my contacts, I see that row with "FaceTime", with the exception of my MacBook, it has only a e-mail address...

  • Aperture trying to connect to .Mac

For a couple weeks now I've been getting an annoying pop up telling me: "There was a problem connecting to .Mac - The request was timed out"
I've never had a .Mac account OR a MobileMe account.  I do have some online connections (Facebook x2, Flickr) but MobileMe is not one of them.  I've gone through preferences... and can't find any reference to .Mac
    Aperture 3  ver 3.1.3

Just to be clear you only get the message while in Aperture? Any particular sequence of events triggers it? Is this a new install or have things been OK and this just started happening?
Two things first the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics are always a good place to start with strange errors like this.  The library repair and moving the preferences file out would be my first tries.
The other thing is to open your keychain and search for .Mac or MobileMe entries. If you don't have these accounts you shouldn't have any entries.

  • TS3048 My early 2009 Mac Pro does not connect via bluetooth to my sound bar or bluetooth mini speakers. Both my wireless keyboard and mouse have no problems connecting. What do I need to do to connect to external bluetooth devices?

My early 2009 Mac Pro does not connect via bluetooth to my sound bar or bluetooth mini speakers. Both my wireless keyboard and mouse have no problems connecting. What do I need to do to connect to external bluetooth devices?

I would always have a wired keyboard and mouse on hand (need not be expensive ... any cheap wired devices will work).  "Emergency recovery" procedures can activate features in random order, so the opportunity to select a recovery partition may pass before the wireless devices are recognized.
That will let you select the "turn on Bluetooth" icon.

The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can support up to ten (10) simultaneously connected Wi-Fi clients.

  • Problems with restarting, connecting wirelessly Mac OS 10.4.8

    Hello everyone,
This is in addition to my previous post
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=817360
I have restored the system that came with my iMac, which is 10.4.7
My iMac now restarts, based on what I arrive at the conclusion that the problem was with 10.4.8 update that I installed before the problem began.
I also hoped that 10.4.8 update was causing all the wireless connectivity problems I had. However:
    - after I installed 10.4.8 update I began experiencing slow connections and my iMac would not resume WiFi after sleep mode until after I restarted the computer;
    - now that I returned back to 10.4.7 where everything was working perfctly, I CANNOT CONNECT TO MY WIRELESS ROUTER AT ALL!!!!!
    The problem:
I have my third-party wireless router in the list of available networks (thanks God!), however, when I choose to connect to this network and introduce my WEP password, the system says: "There was an error connecting to [name of the network].... network". That's it! (very informative, isn't it?!)
I use the same f*ing password to connect to the same router from my PC, which is according to Steve is not the best computer in the world, or at least not the one he likes - well, you know Steve, THERE IS NO PROBLEM connecting from PC and I have spent already the whole day trying to understand what the problem is with the best in the world iMac or Mac OS X or whatever....
Okay, I know Steve will not read this. So if anyone knows anything - please let me know. Thanks in advance.

  • Cannot connect to the internet from my MAC on WRT160Nv2 - no problems connecting from my PC

    Hi,
I have just bought a WRT160Nv2, but I am having problems connecting to the internet from my MAC (a powerbook with OS X) when I connect to the router wirelessly. If I try from my PC the Internet works fine. Also if I connect the MAC directly to the routers LAN port, the Internet works.
When I connect wirelessly from the MAC I do get an IP adress, and I am able to access the routers web configuration page. I can also see that the correct DNS gets assigned, so I am low on suggestions to what could be the problem.
Currently I have the router set up to WPA2 encryption, but I have tried different settings, e.g. no security at all with the same result.
I just tried upgrading to the newest firmware (WRT160Nv2_v2.0.02_008), also with no luck.
Also I should mention that the MAC can connect to other wireless connections without problems, e.g. my previous ZyXel DSL router.
Any ideas to what could be the problem?
    Thanks,
    Rasmus

Well maybe WPA2 Security is not compatible with Mac so change the Security mode to WEP or WPA and prepare security key of 10 digit password and while connecting to the wireless network on Mac type a $ sign first followed by the 10 digit passoword and it should work.

  • I need to download dell drivers to a jumpdrive connected to my iMac.  Will this cause problems with my Mac?

I need to download dell drivers to a jumpdrive connected to my iMac.  Will this cause problems with my Mac?

Thanks.  These drivers are for the audio, etc. for a dell laptop I purchased used.  ( Needed something cheap for a training video that would only run on Windows.  Tried Emedia player but picture was too fuzzy.)  Dell support said I should contact Apple support for instructions on how to get the drivers onto the jumpdrive.  Any tips on doing that?
