Problem connecting to Netgear

I just bought a new Macbook, and cannot get connected to my home wifi network. I have a Netgear WGR614 router from Comcast. I currently do not have any security on the network and have been able to connect by Windows laptop as well as PS3. However, my Macbook shows that the network is locked requires a password. I don't have a password and cannot get the Macbook to connect.

Hi Russ,
I can't say I've seen a scenario where any of my Macs showed a protected WiFi access point when it's not protected in some manner, but I suppose it's possible. Have you tried resetting the router to factory defaults? Have you tried enabled some sort of encryption (preferably WPA or WPA/2) to see if that allows a successful connection? Lastly, have you tried contacted Comcast (the provider of the hardware) for configuration assistance?

Problem connecting wirelessly from iMac to NETGEAR router, get invalid password message with WPA and WPA-2 encryption in place but if I remove them, so no security, can connect without a problem. Help!!

Thank you for your suggestion but I have already had a couple of phone sessions with NETGEAR support and they don't see any problems with the router settings etc. They referred me to Apple support, who helped me discover that it is possible to communicate with the router but only if I turn off the encryption/security software, which I don't want to do. The frustrating thing is that I can connect wirelessly from a laptop running Windows 7 and two Anroid smart phones, with WPA-2 in place, without a problem. Do you have any other ideas?

  • Netgear DG834G Problem connecting iMAC G5

    Hi,
Wondered if anyone could assist me in this.
Netgear Router DG834G / 3 Pcs all set up on Network / added a iMac G5 (Intel/10.4.4) at w/e but with problems - mainly it says it is connected to Netgear but will there is no connection to the internet (when going into Safari).
Stumped by this - I have set TCP/IP address etc ip (192.168.0.5) etc...it is connecting to the Netgear router - but that's as far as it goes.
I have connected via the ethernet cable from the iMac to Netgear DG834G Router - this works fine but knocks off all the other PCs connections. (The connection is still registered (i.e.signal present) but will not log on to any sites etc.
If you can suggest anything it would be much appreciated - I am completely stuck !
    Many Thanks in Advance.

Hughxxx, Welcome to the discussion area!
    ...added a iMac G5 (Intel/10.4.4)...
You do not have an iMac G5. You have an Intel iMac. Those are discussed in the iMac > iMac (Early 2006) > Internet, Networking and your iMac discussion area.
...I have set TCP/IP address etc ip (192.168.0.5)...
Why did you not use DHCP? Try that.
What you are describing is usually a DNS problem. Setting the Network preference to DHCP should solve it. If not see KB 106798, Mac OS: Troubleshooting "A connection failure has occurred", "The specified server could not be found" or Similar Messages.

  • I am having problems connecting to my home wifi with my iphone4s

Over the past couple of weeks I have experienced a problem connecting to my home wifi service (Sky) with my iphone4s although my laptop connects fine. My phone also picks up the wifi at my place of work. At home when in close proximity to the router (netgear) on the phone the network name appears in the wifi settings but on the wifi networks page it does not get a tick against the name (wheel just keeps revolving). I have taken it back to the retailer (Vodaphone) and they recommend it be sent back to Apple (Liverpool or Manchester) as they consider it a hardware fault. I will be without the phone for probably 1-2 weeks and I use it within my working environment regularly.
    Has any one any ideas?

ps. If I go down the route of 'forget this Network' will I need to do any resets on the router as I cant find the username and password when I enter my IP address for the router.

  • Problems Connecting iPod Touch 32GB to WiFi

    Hi,
I have just purchased an iPod Touch 32GB and am having problems connecting to a server. I am using a Netgear DG834 router to connect to Orange. Netgear is now showing as checked on the Wi-Fi Networks page on the iPod with strong signal strength but I keep cannoy getting the message "could not connect to server" whenever I try any of the applications. Needless to say, the internet connections on my laptop and desktop are working perfectly. Thanks. Grant

Have you tried resetting your router? sometimes this is all you need to do to get the IPT to work properly. If you are using any type of security such as WEP or WPA2 then you are going to need to enter your password. Try a reset and then go to your wifi settings in the IPT and select your router and then click on the little blue arrow and check under DHCP and make sure you have an IP along with a router Ip and DNS entries. If you don't have a router IP or DNS entries try and renew the lease.
If you can't get it to work then reset the router again but this time try it without any security and do the same procedure as above. If that still doesn't work then the only other thing I can suggest is to look on Netgears website and see if there is a firmware upgrade for your router and to give that a try.

  • There was a problem connecting to the server "10.0.1.30"

In the last couple of days I have started getting the error "There was a problem connecting to the server “10.0.1.30”" popping up on the screen. Nothing to my knowledge has changed and I have no devices on my LAN that have an IP address in this range. All devices IP addresses are 192.168.20.1xx and my router's IP address is "10.106.75.57", subset mask "255.255.255.255", gateway "10.106.75.57", DNS "10.5.80.241 , 10.5.68.232" (Router is NetComm NF2 with attached AirCard 320U USB 3G/4G modem).
A couple of weeks ago I switch from using a Sierra (NetGear) Aircard 760S Hotspot Modem (default IP address of 10.0.0.138) using the AirCard Hub wireless router (IP address 10.0.1.1) to the NetComm router AirCard modem combination.
If I Ping "10.0.1.30" the results are as follows:
    "PING 10.0.1.30 (10.0.1.30): 56 data bytes

This error message is annoying, but apart from that everything appears to be working just fine. Is there a way of tracking down what is attempting to call 'server"10.0.1.30"' and stoping it. I.E. is there a quick and simple fix?

There are many possible causes for this issue, and it may be hard to resolve. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
If you get the alert as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or by software that otherwise loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. A known offender is "AdobeResourceSynchronizer," which is a component of some Adobe products. See also this discussion.
If you get the alert in the login screen before you log in, stop here and ask for instructions.
    Step 2
If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down the command key and drag it out.
    Step 3
In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select
              Go ▹ Go to Server...
from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select
              Clear Recent Servers…
    and confirm. Test.
    Step 4
Open the Printers & Scanners pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use.
    Step 5
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing  command-C:
    ~/Library/PDF Services
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
    Step 6
    Open the folder
    ~/Library/Preferences
as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)
Log out and back in again, and test.
    Step 7
Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.
    Try rebuilding the iPhoto library.
    Step 8
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
In the Directory Utility window, select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Mounts from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, and /Local/Default from the node menu, if not already selected. On the right is a list of names and values. By default, the list is empty. If it's not empty, post a screenshot of the window and stop here.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 9
Open the following file as you did in the last step:
    /etc/auto_master
It will open in a TextEdit window. The contents should be exactly this:
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master          # Use directory service
    /net               -hosts          -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home               auto_home     -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers     -fstab
    /-               -static
If there are any other lines in the window, post them. Otherwise, close the window.

  • Connecting to netgear range extender

I have a netgear wifi router and connected the netgear wn2000 range extender to push the wifi upstairs in my home. My ipad detects the extender and shows it on the list of available networks then prompts me to enter the password to connect. The ipad keypad pops up so i can type in the password but no letters will type in the password field. The keypad is working for all other functions such as email and google etc. Is anyone using this netgear range extender and if yes, how did you connect. Any problems entering the password? Thanks!

You sure can use the netgear extender with your verizon router.... just DONT follow netgear's instructions. After messing around for hours with no luck I tried this and it worked.
    1) turn OFF your laptop's wireless connection
    2) Connect your laptop to the extender's Ethernet port and plug in the extender
    3) after the extender boots it will show two lights
    4) open your browser and it should take you right to the extender's genie
    5) follow all the prompts using your Verizon router's id and password
    6) disconnect the Ethernet connection and turn the laptop's wireless back on
    Good luck

  • Trying to connect through  Netgear

I am trying to connect via Netgear router. My Airport says connected but when I try to connect to internet it won't pull anything. Any suggestions?

I, too tried to connect through Netgear. I got the connection up and running, but the Netgear kept shutting on and off. I finally read the reviews of the new Netgear products and wound up returning it to Fryes. While I was there, I met a Fryes customer- a big corporate IP guy, and he said that a lot of companies are pushing the Netgear line, (they get big incentives) but many companies and individuals that he works with have had nothing but problems on their PCs as well as MACS. He suggested that I switch to the highest end Lynksys, (I used to have an old one). I bought the new Lynksys, installed it in about 15 minutes, and have never had even one problem with it! By the way, he was there to return a Netgear for a client as well! Good Luck, and I hope you solve your problem!

  • IPad was connected to my home WiFi, but now won't connect.  my phone has no problem connecting though

IPad won't connect to my home WiFi. Was connecting fine then stopped.  My phone has no problem connecting to same WiFI.  Confused.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • G4 lost wireless connection to NetGear server

I'm running OS 10.4.3 and I have a Mac G4. This machine used to connect to a NetGear network just fine via Airport. I turned off the Mac for the holidays and when turned it on and it does not get an IP from the router. Two other computers, one wireless, get an IP just fine. The G4 does 'see' a strong signal from the NetGear network via the airport card and NetGear WGXB102 signal extender, however, after 'trying' to connect, it reports an error, can't connect. When I launch Safari and can't connect, I run the Network Diagnostics it offers nothing but info that a connection exists. Can anyone help.

Im having the same problem. My Netgear used to connect wirlessly to the network and the inernet, now all it connects to is the network. And comes back with an error saying not connected to the internet.
The only way I can use the internet now is through the Ethernet connection out of the Netgear.

  • I'm trying to set up my Ipod, but when I go to sign in with an apple ID it says 'Could not sign in: there was a problem connecting to the server'.

I just bought a 3rd generation ipod touch. It was professionally refurbished. I'm trying to set it up, and everything seems to be working fine, until we get to the wifi. I live on campus and our wifi is username and password protected. I signed in and everything seemed to work fine, and in the top left hand corner I have all the bars for wifi. However, when I go to sign in with an apple ID it says 'Could no sign in: there was a problem connecting to the server'. I've tried turning it on and off again, tried signing on to our wifi again, but it all isn't working. What can I do?

I also encountered the same problem. Try using a different email address or try signing in later.

  • Problems connecting multiple macs to an Airport Extreme network.

I think this problem is similar to a previous post, but is individual in some ways.
I have 2 Airport Extreme basestations covering a large flat connected by Ethernet extending a single network. I did try to extend the network wirelessly, but this was plagued with problems where the network would work for 10 mins, then drop out as I think the basestations are slightly too far apart.
Connected to the network are a number of machines:
Wirelessly we have 3x iPhones, 1x G4 Cube, 1x iMac (current model), 2x MacBook Pro (previous model) & 1x PC.
Wired via a hub is an Apple TV, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Denon Home Cinema Amp, PS2
For aprox 6 months I have had major problems connecting all the wireless machines at the same time. I have played around with the security as per previous posts with varying degrees of success.
I seem to have the most problems with the iMac. The iMac will not join the network when there is any form of wireless security. Every time I try to set up a password it hangs when trying to join and I finally get the "There was a error joining xxxx network".
After more playing around I managed to get all the machines working by having no security on the network and locking the network down by MAC addresses.
Since last Thursday I now have a new problem. The iMac joins and stays on the network perfectly, but the second my second MacBook Pro is switched on and joins the network, the internet connection on the iMac drops out. In addition, as we use the iMac as a media server, all other machines connected to the iMac for either file sharing or iTunes sharing then get the error "the remote machine is failing to respond. Please check firewall settings if there are any". What is strange is that the iMac remains on the network, full signal, independent IP address and the second the MacBook Pro is switched off, works perfectly again.
I have tried wiping both the iMac & the MacBook Pro and re-installing their operating systems, but this only solves the problem for aprox 24 hours then all of a sudden the issue re-appears.
    Can anyone out there help?

My early 2009 Mac Pro does not connect via bluetooth to my sound bar or bluetooth mini speakers. Both my wireless keyboard and mouse have no problems connecting. What do I need to do to connect to external bluetooth devices?

I would always have a wired keyboard and mouse on hand (need not be expensive ... any cheap wired devices will work).  "Emergency recovery" procedures can activate features in random order, so the opportunity to select a recovery partition may pass before the wireless devices are recognized.
That will let you select the "turn on Bluetooth" icon.
