Problem connecting to server from MacBook
Greetings,
We have a MacBook here at work with 10.6.2, and we're using it to connect to a server (Xserve 10.5.8). The problem is strange in that the when the user is in the office on the LAN and tries to connect to the server a message appears that says:
"The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
The odd thing is that the connection will work when the user is away from the office, accessing the server via VPN. Also, everyone else at the office is able to access the server fine.
We recently migrated her old 10.5 MacBook to a new 10.6 MacBook. Would the issue be with the migration from the old computer to the new computer?

Hi,
one shot in the dark - is IPv6 enabled on the 10.6.2 machine for the network interface you are connecting on? If so, disable IPv& and try again. Also, can other machines connect via the same route - are all routers/switches in between able to transfer the protocol?

Having problems connecting a late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2ghz i7 to a Sony KDL-32L5000 using a display miniport to DVI adapter (DVI to VGA cord). The TV is not detecting the macbook. Anyone have this problem?
You really have to mess with the resoluton, espescially the refresh rate, as it varies from projector to projector, monitor to monitor. Even within the same brand! Because so many manufacturers are trying so many different things to become the next cool kid on the block, and the way the formats are being configured that's now part of the game.
That's why so many professionally produced corporate shows hire a dedicated projectionist for the video presentations. Too many bugs in the honey.
Refresh & sesolution are the first things to look at.
Just so you know that colors in PowerPoint PC, and PowerPoint Mac, don't exactly match... go figure.
I forgot to mention another thing, sometimes it's the projector that needs to be tweaked. -
"problem connecting to server" when trying to access local disk
Recently (perhaps since I upgraded to Yosemite), the first time I try access one of my two hard drives through Finder I get two pop-up windows with error "there was a problem connecting to server". When I dismiss the pop-ups, the Finder window appears OK. I then don't get these errors for some time and then I get them again - and always two errors.
It seems the access request goes through NAS which fails ...
"NetAuthSysAgent[11958]: ERROR: AFP_GetServerInfo - connect failed 62"
and "NetAuthSysAgent[11958]: GetStatus: connecting to self not allowed"
but then it gets actioned as a local access. Can anyone think of why NAS gets involved? And mainly how to get rid of it :^).
There is nothing in login items that mounts either of the disks as a server. Is there a way to find out if a local disk is mounted as a server and who caused it?Many thanks, I am impressed by the process :^)

When my screensaver starts, it gives me an error there was a problem connecting to server
It seems like I'm having a problem with iPhoto. Whenever my screensaver comes on, it just sits on "Loading Photos" and then when I move the cursor to get out of the screensaver, I get a warning saying "There was a problem connecting to server XXX"
I don't know why it's trying to connect to this server. I have googled and searched and tried everything that everyone has said (renaming/deleting plists, removing all login items, clearing iPhoto and trying to start over...) but nothing has helped.
This error also comes up pretty consistantly when iPhoto is open.
I'm not really sure what else to check. I can't find any trace of the remote server, so I'm not sure why this is coming up.
I'm running Mountain Lion and whatever the latest version of iPhoto is.
Any thoughts?I was able to get it. Apparently there was some old photo in my iPhoto library that was being mapped out to the server that it kept trying to connect to.
Which should have been relatively easy to detect, except the way that iPhoto is setup, there was no real way to find the source for each photo.
What I was able to do to was, under photos, CMD-A to select all photos and then try and move them to an album. It popped up with a notice saying that it wasn't able to find XXXXX.jpg and I had the option to cancel or find the photo. So I renamed another photo on my desktop to XXXXX.jpg, and when the error came up, I selected Find and then used the copy on my desktop to replace it.
After I did that, it let me add all of the photos to an album and I was able to launch the screensaver successfully.
A pretty big pain in the but that would have been easier to resolve if the UI of iPhoto was a little more detailed or customizable. But oh well it worked for me.

HT4623 problem connecting to server during update??
I have completed the installation of IOS 6 and when i enter my info through set up it tells my there was a problem connecting to the server. I have internet connection so i can't figure out what the problem is. I entered my password and when it asks for my email it tells me there is a problem connecting to server? Ignore "There was a problem connecting to server" message in Time Machine
I use Time Machine via a Hard Drive connected to an AirPort Extreme. It works great when I'm at home, it obviously doesn't back up when I'm not at home. My problem is when I'm not at home I keep getting prompts stating "There was a problem connecting to server XXX". It's incredibly annoying. Is there a way I can force these prompts to not come up? I know I'm not connected and don't need prompted.
How can I make this go away?
Thanks for the help!Well as long as it's turned on, it will look for the drive to backup to every hour. I don't see any other way around it.
Other option would be to use an add on program that you can schedule TM with. TimeMachine Editor or TimeMachine Scheduler.
Al least with these you can schedule backups when you are home. I haven't used either, but I'm sure they will work for you. -

How do you turn off "There was a problem connecting to server..." notifications
I work with a company that does a lot of shared review of documents via PDF on their local network. I, however, am a thousand miles away, and reviewing it via a separate DropBoxed copy.
It appears every time I open the DropBoxed copy of the PDF, Adobe Acrobat begins searching for the original PDF on a server to which I am not connected. And then I get variations on the following notification until I do a full reboot:
There was a problem connecting to the server "XXXXXXXX"
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
That, my friends, is a gigantic posterior pustule that I want to pop. So what's a solution.
Before you go all "look elsewhere on this forum/Google/Whatevah for an answer to this already answered question," please understand that I have. Everywhere. For the last month. And please, don't just chime in with a "I have that problem too" with no solution. I just could really use the help of the Apple Hive Mind to solve this. If this is not the right forum, please direct me to where this should be posted.
Thanks in advance. The specs: Macbook Pro 13" (late 2013), 512GB, OS X Yosemite 10.10 (was happening with Mavericks too).All "shared review" PDFs. Regular PDFs from other sources do not trigger the problem. My belief is that there is a embedded script in the shared review PDFs that continually seeks to link to the relevant servers. As I stated above, I am not on that server(s) either virtually, wirelessly or hard-wired.
Based on your previous questions (thanks, BTW), I have "sanitized" some of the PDFs that have caused this condition and am testing to see if that takes care of the situation. But seriously, isn't there some way to kill the constant "trying to connect to server" thing? It's annoying as (fill in the blank).

If I look at my server connections then I always have the entry afp://192.168.1.68 which is not one of my ip addresses, if I remove it next time I look it has reloaded!
I have removed all the reference to shares with my macbook
Nothing seems to stop this message popping up other thclosing down the apps

I've now narrowed the problem down further.
It seems that every time I open any app on my Mac and select File/Open, or in iTunes, Add to Library then select Photos from the Media section of the Sidebar, then I get this error message where it is picking up a reference to my none existent MacBook laptop.
There error message continually pops up onto my screen until I close whichever app I loaded..... If I relaunch the app and don't try to access Photos in the Sidebar, then I do not get this error message.
Does this info make it easier for somebody to suggest a solution? -
Problem connecting to Server error message... a lot

Im running the latest version of Yosemite (Macbook Pro 2009) and I'm having some strange issue.
I used to have a NAS on my network but at the moment it isn't connected. This wouldn't normally be a problem with the exception that it causes me 2 issues that are really quite annoying
First issue is Google Chrome seems to now take 5 mins or so to load...I believe this and the second issue are actually connected
Second issue, I now get the following error message about 5 times which I have to "OK' before it finally dissapears and let me get on with my life.
"There was a problem connecting to the server...(name)
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time, check the server name or IP and try again...OK"
Anyone got any ideas why this is happening and how I can stop it?
Thanks in advance.There are many possible causes for this issue, and it may be very hard to resolve without wiping your account clean of everything except documents as a last resort. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you get the alert in the login screen before you log in, stop here and ask for instructions.
Step 1
If you get the alert as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or by software that otherwise loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. Known offenders are "1Password" and "Adobe Resource Synchronizer."
Step 2
If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down the command key and drag it out.
Step 3
In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select
Go ▹ Go to Server...
from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select
Clear Recent Servers…
and confirm. Test.
Step 4
Open the Printers & Scanners pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use. If in doubt, delete them all and add back the ones you want.
Step 5
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing command-C:

In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
Step 6
Open the folder
~/Library/Preferences
as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)
Log out and back in again, and test.
Step 7
Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, bookmarks in the Preview application, and PDF files created by Adobe Acrobat with embedded scripts.
Try rebuilding the iPhoto library, if applicable.
Step 8
Resources such as images or sounds stored on the server may have been added to various applications. Examples would be pictures added to Contacts and custom sounds added to Mail. The range of possibilites here is practically infinite, so I can't be more specific. You might get a hint by launching the Console application and looking for error messages that appear at the same time as the alerts.
Step 9
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. Start up in safe mode. Test. After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Step 10
Triple-click the line below to select it:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
In the Directory Utility window, select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Mounts from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, and/Local/Default from the node menu, if not already selected. On the right is a list of names and values. By default, the list is empty. If it's not empty, post a screenshot of the window and stop here.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
Step 11
Open the following file as you did in the last step:
/etc/auto_master
It will open in a TextEdit window. The contents should be exactly this:

Problem connecting DataBase Link from windows oracle to oracle on Linux
I'm facing a problem with database links from windows oracle to Oracle hosted on Linux server.
I'm able to successfully create the Database Link using the following query on oracle database hosted on a windows server
CREATE DATABASE LINK SampleDB
CONNECT TO myuser IDENTIFIED BY password
USING 'sample';
The tns names entry on windows for database in Linux server is as follows
DSOFT =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.0.100)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = sample)
But while executing the query "select count(*) from doctor@SampleDB;" in sql developer on windows, I'm getting the following error

12154. 00000 - "TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified"
*Cause: A connection to a database or other service was requested using
a connect identifier, and the connect identifier specified could not
be resolved into a connect descriptor using one of the naming methods

located or reached.

Can any one help me?A database link is acting as a client to the target, remote database in exactly the same fashion and using exactly the same tns infrastructure as any other client trying to connect to that remote database. your ORA-12154 when querying a db link means exactly the same as if you had gotten it trying to connect with sqlplus, from the same server. Check the link SB provided. Keep in mind that the tnsnames file of concern is the one on the source database server. -
Problem Connecting Remote Server
Hi all,
I have a strange problem with the server today , I am not able to access the portal from my local machine got an Error on my browser
"Page Not found" how ever I could log on to the server and the portal was running fine on the system but was not accessible from the remote machine
I can ping the server and I am in the network .
It was able to access it from my studio earlier suddenly I get this error
Any thoughts ??

There can be so many reasons you are not able to ping your server including things like - you are connected to a vlan, your browser proxy settings, etc.
However, the most common one is the browser proxy setting. In your internet explorer, go to Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings, uncheck the proxy server or any scripts your browser uses and try accessing the page again. If it still doesnt work, uncheck everything in your LAN settings and try it.
If this does not work, try to give the actual ip address (not host name) in your browser address bar. for example, try giving http://<ipaddress>:<port>/irj/portal.

Hp-setup not connecting to server from China
Hello all,
this is a weird problem: when I am in China I sometimes need to install new HP printers; those printers, like LaserJet M1213nf MFB of today, are fully supported by hplip on Debian, but when I try to run hp-setup it cannoct connect to server. The same if I try to download plugin with hp-plugin.
Of course, I have absolutely no problem when running hplip suite application from Europe.
As far as you know, there is some particular issue related to the country (China) where I'm in?I understand now. The problem you are having is the printer will not install (hp_setup is also the name of printer's network).
How is the printer connected that you want to install the software for (USB, wireless or Ethernet)?
If it is a network connected printer and your computer is also on that network, you may be slowing down your PC installing software for every printer you come into contact with during your travels. I recommend trying to install the HP ePrint Driver which will automatically search for any printer on the same network and it will print to it like it is a driver.
This may or may not be a possibility for you but it works very well if you are currently unable to print due to the problems you are having right now getting the printer's software to install.
Bear with me while I research the information you have provided and I will see if these errors are related to your current location or not. Thank you for your patience.
