Problem connecting to the inernet with iMac OSX 8.6

My friend has a very old iMac, running OS X 8.6, that isn't connecting to the internet. It is connected directly to an Embarq (Zyxel) 660 DSL modem. The modems lights are are all lit, including the ethernet light. I've set the TCP/IP settings to DHCP, but I can't get into the modem to find out what the DNS is. I've tried using Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator to access the internet but it keeps telling me that the TCP/IP needs to be configured and activated. I've tried restarting the iMac after saving the TCP/IP settings, and have tried restarting the modem.
Can somebody give me a solution? or a way to configure the iMac to view the internet?

After using the TCP/IP Control Panel, you must close the window and save changes to have them take effect. Then do something that would send you out to the Internet, such as set Network Time, open a Browser and select a Web page, or ask for Software Update.
Then open the TCP/IP Control Panel again, and check the assigned IP Address. If 169.254.xxx.yyy, you are talking only to yourself, and may have a bad/wrong cable or similar physical problem.
From Zyxel specs, that looks like a router, so it should be able to do DHCP. There are a couple of ranges of Internet addresses that are commonly used for these: 192.168.0.1 is very common. try entering that in a Browser.

Thanks this has helped me solve the problem.
I used the Outlook Anywhere connectivity tester you suggested. Selected Outlook autodiscover.
It told me that it could not resolve things on any of the 4 tests.
I saw that using the last test "Attempting to contact the Autodiscover service using the DNS SRV redirect method", was the only one likely to work in my case.
I had already changed 3 entries in dns to point at my DDNS address but this had not worked, from the errors I could see that it was just the certificate name not matching so I changed the DNS entries for Autodiscover, autoconfig and _autodiscover._tcp
to be webmail.domain.com which is a CNAME to my ddns address for the broadband router, which in turn forwards ports 80 and 443 to the exchange server for owa and activesync access. I got an error message saying that I had an illegal entry in my SRV record
as a CNAME is not allowed, but it saved the change anyway.
I reran the test and it worked.I can now make new outlook clients attach teo exchange.
Thank you, after 8 hours yesterday of trying to reolve this I suddnely got it to work on one laptop but the other still would not and had lost track of what I could have changed so had no idea what actually made it work.

I keep getting the error message, "There was a problem connecting to the server ..."iMac." I have Mavericks 10.9.2 on both my Macbook Pro and my iMac. The Macbook is the system having issues. I've seen "fixes" for Time Machine for Lion. I have addressed this, and it does not seem to be the problem. I've deleted all servers from the list, unmounted Time Machine and turned it off and back on again to refresh the settings, turned sharing off and back on.
Any Mavericks ideas out there?

Installed OSX 10.9.5 on three MacBookPRO's now all of them have lost access to our Windows 2003 Server. I get the message "There was a problem connecting to the server "SERVER". Note this was previously connecting with 10.9.4.
I understand 10.9.5 was giving us improvements in the reliability of SMB2 but this is now much worse.

I'm trying to set up my Ipod, but when I go to sign in with an apple ID it says 'Could not sign in: there was a problem connecting to the server'.

I live on campus and our wifi is username and password protected. I signed in and everything seemed to work fine, and in the top left hand corner I have all the bars for wifi. I also encountered the same problem. Try using a different email address or try signing in later.

My imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an 2wire DSL modem.

Help my brand new imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an "2WIRE" DSL modem. Windstream tech service is useless. i can connect with the built in router through Ethernet or wireless, but still no connecting to internet, help! windstream said everything is working on their end, yea right. What i do know is that both the mac and ipad work at other places and can connect with wireless connected to the internet, so i know it's not the apple products.
these are brand new machines with lion.

There is a 2701HG-B, and a 2701HG-D. If not labelled on the modem, ask Windstream which one they presently supply or how to tell the difference.
By the way tell your wife it isn't that bad. At least you have an ethernet DSL modem. There were times where DSL modems had RJ-11, USB, and Ethernet, and all three were used to provide access. At least now only the craziest DSL providers still use those modems.

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary? How do I do this if so?

i have a new macbook pro 13" and every 6 minutes or so it pops up a window that says "there was a problem connecting to the server. URLS with the type 'file' are not supported". it never seems to cause any problems but is supremely annoying. how can i make this come to an end?

I tried someone's solution of taking another external disc and plugging it in, then when it showed up and time machine asked if I wanted to use it or that someone might be trying to trick me, I chose not use it. Then I shut down my computer, plugged in the original Lacie, and rebooted the computer and all seems to work fine now-- the Lacie appears on my desktop and all seeems to be in working order. Who knows why or anything else,- as weird as it gets- but for now things seemed fixed--- maybe others can try this too-- it worked for me so far.

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Leopard, but now I keep getting this message when I open some web-pages and every time I wake the Mac up after going to sleep. For some odd reason I get it in Swedish sometimes (installed language) and some times in English...

You're ignoring context. On the old Apple Discussion Groups I never posted replies like that, instead giving people relatively detailed answers. The new Apple Support Communities made things worse by introducing certain inefficiencies. Then came Lion. The flood of messages that came with Lion required a painful choice for any of the people who had been helping here: (1) Give quality responses to a few questions and ignore the rest. (2) When applicable, give a brief answer such as the one that you found objectionable. (3) Give up all the other normal activities of life and spend full time trying to answer questions here.
People who needed help with Lion problems seemed to have trouble discovering existing message threads that described how to solve their problems. I never posted the suggestion of "Check the 'More like this' area" without verifying that the help that the poster needed could be found there. Even doing that, what I posted saved me time that I could use to help someone else.
The people helping here are all volunteers. None of them is being paid for the time they spend here. They all have a life outside of Apple Support Communities. It's arrogant of you to demand that people helping here spend more time than they already do.
