Problem Converting AVI (DV) to MOV (DV)

I have a number of AVI (DV) files that were previously imported on my PC, which I want to covert (using my Mac) to the more Mac friendly MOV (DV) file format.
I read that the best way to achieve this is to open the AVI files in Quicktime Pro and to convert the files to MOV using “SAVE AS”, as opposed to “EXPORT”. I understand that the benefit of using “SAVE AS” is that there is no recompression of the DV stream and that only the Container is changed (which results in a lossless conversion).
The problem is that the new MOV (DV) file is significantly larger than the original AVI (DV) file. For example, the size of a 13.5 minute clip increases from 2.95 GB to 5.88 GB.
I wouldn't expect such a significant change in file size if only the Container is indeed being changed.
I have also tried MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion, but I get the following message when I try to open the AVI (DV) file “File open error: this movie file is not supported”.
I have confirmed using Gspot that the AVI (DV) file is a 'Type 1' as opposed to a 'Type 2' file. Gspot also indicates the following information about the file “Multipart OpenDML AVL (3 parts). I don’t know if this is relevant.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE PROBLEM SOLVED:
I was able to fix this problem by following a reply that I received on forum.videohelp.com. Basically, I was able to fix the problem by using a program called DVdate to convert my AVI (DV) files from Type 1 to Type 2. Now all is well. Here is the link below to the answer.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • Quick Time Pro - Problem Exporting AVI files to .mov

Hi all, Here is the problem that has been plaguing me and driving me crazy. hopefully somebody can help me with this.
I use pinnacle studio 8 to create the avi file, the resulting file size is 1.02GB. Everything works fine in this file audio and video
Next I use quicktime pro to convert the file to a .mov format and compress the video down. This is where the problem starts. when I try and export the avi to a .mov, the options screen doesn't allow me to select the audio, it says its not there. I can modify all the settings for the video, but it doesn't even recognize the audio.
It has been doing this for all of my avi videos that are over a gig. It also does this when I try and export an mpeg to a .mov
also if I do go ahead and export to a .mov file, it compresses the videos down to around 5 to 7mb, where as all my videos that are exported to .mov that do have sound are roughly 20+mb
Anybody know whats going on? I'm going nuts trying to figure this out.

Sounds like your AVI isn't really a two track file (audio and video) but rather a muxed MPEG-1 file.
QuickTime Pro can't extract audio from muxed file formats and that is why it shows no sound options during export.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can export MPEG-1 to QuickTime formats and extract the audio.

  • How to convert .avi files to .mov format for use in FCE ?

    Hi guys,
I need to import an avi file into FCE. How do I convert it to mov format ?
    Thanks

i am in the same boat. i have a canon G9 and automatically downloaded to iphoto without thinking. the videos i extracted seem to be .avi. what do i have to do to edit them in FCE4? i tried to convert them with prism, the video is messed up. i tried to put them into imovie instead, it won't let me do any effects on them. it's so confusing bc it lets the videos load in, or so i thought, but then it won't let me do anything to them? what do i do?

  • Problems converting to flv from mov

Ive got quicktime pro and i try to convert my mov files to an flv file and it works but when i go to play the file at about 70% of the way through the video it will freeze. if i fast forward the video it will continue to play the last 30% but without volume. it does this on all mov files i convert.
i've got another converter on a pc that will convert the mov files to flv with no problems but i want to be able to do it on the mac.

If you have QuickTime 7.2 installed, encoding FLV video will work properly only if the audio track in the source video is encoded at 44kHz. Otherwise, the FLV will stop playing two-thirds of the way through.
If necessary, use QuickTime Pro to re-encode the source video so that its audio track is 44kHz. Then encode into FLV.

  • Audio failure on converting AVI to Mov files using quicktime pro

I have used quicktime pro for some time to convert avi files to mov files etc for importing into itunes and ipod. However this week all of a sudden the audio fails on exactly 3 minutes and 28 seconds, and does not pick up again. I have not installed anything during that period which would cause this and i'm totally lost.

Do you have Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

Hello! I used QuickTime for watch any videos on OS X Mountain Lion, but now, I'm passed to OS X Mavericks and QuickTime, when I open an .avi file, convert this in a .mov file. I'm sorry for my English, I'm French and I don't know speak English very well, but what can I do for QuickTime opens on .avi and doesn't convert to .mov?

    HI GalaxieMusique,
I'm french too, but I'm going to write this post in english so that everyone may understand it
I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:
    http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/lecteurs_video_dvd/fiches/10 0.html
and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).
Sorry for the english, we french people can make mistakes sometimes
If anyone has a solution for QuickLook, please do not hesitate. This topic is becoming a real mess....

  • Avi, mpeg and mov problems

I`m having no luck playing streamed .avi, mpg and .mov ( all video) files.
The avi and mpeg video files freeze up upon start up and only show the first second of the video for the first 5-10 minutes. After that they play fine although with no sound. They also play and sound fine after being downloaded and then opened.
The mov files only show the sliding bar or , after being saved , the blank QT screen with the bar sliding and no sound.
Also , the QT "intro" on apple.com/quicktime (the timberlake video) refuses to play properly, it just comes in very "blocky" with only occasional sound bits getting through. The same can be said about some avi files, when they do work.
I have flip4mac , divix, 3vix, xvid installed. Tried perian but that completely killed all streaming avi playback , just a Q with ? mark. Downloaded AC3 codec and put in the QT folder. no luck.
These are the sites in question.
    http://www.justintimberlake.com/QuickTime/justintimberlakeqt.html
    http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/1568/videos/riki_discovers.mov
Couldn`t find any avi movies to use as an example.
Last question. Is there a way to automaticaly stream avi and mpg files in the same QT screen as wmv and asf files?
thank you and sorry about the long post.
    imac intel core2duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try VLC media player regarding playing .avi files.
    ===============
I had no problems playing the Timberlake video. However, when I tried to play your second link (.mov) all I got was the bar, no audio or video.
Regarding your 1st link, have you tried repairing permissions & restarting?
Regarding your 2nd link: Apparently, it's a bad video link & no fault of yours or your computer.
    ====================
"Is there a way to automaticaly stream avi and mpg files in the same QT screen as wmv and asf files?"
The following is a work-around for .avi files. Not sure if it will also work for .mpg files.
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
    Try the file again.
Thanks to QuickTimeKirk for the above info.
    ================
    Regarding no audio sometimes................
If repairing permissions does not work, then try the following:
KB article - No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)
Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it and then quit.

  • Convert AVI/MOV to WMV

I'm looking for a program to convert avi/mov files to wmv, preferably freeware/cheap shareware, so that I can stream movies to my 360. I know there's flip4mac studio pro, but $99 is just a little excessive for something that's basically just a stop gap until Nullriver puts support for mpeg files in Connect360. In any case, any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.
