Problem Converting Canon CR2 Files to DNG

I am currently on holiday, shooting photos with my Canon 70D in raw (CR2), and I have my Macbook Air with me, with Lightroom 5.4 installed on it.  After each day's shooting, I have been putting the flash card from the camera into the laptop, and downloading the photos using Lightroom, converting the CR2 files to DNG in the process.  This was working fine until a couple of days ago when suddenly, Lightroom has decided that it can no longer do the conversion.  It displays the photos on the card, it allows me to choose the ones I want to download, and then it tells me that it cannot convert/download them because it cannot read the files.  Well, if it cannot read the files, how can it display them so that I can make my choices?  And why, after working successfully for weeks, am I suddenly getting this error message ... nothing has changed in my hardware or software in either the camera or computer.  Any and all help would be most appreciated.  Thank you!!

Thanks very much for the answer, but I'm afraid it is not very enlightening ... at least to someone like me.  I do not understand where I would look for a write permission issue ... especially since nothing has changed (as far as I know).  Can you give me any further help?  Thanks!

  • Converting Canon .CR2 files to .dng

I have what appears to be the latest version of the Adobe DNG Converter (8.6.0.254); but when I direct it to a folder containing .CR2 files from my Canon PowerShot G7X camera, it tells me "No items match your search" and does no conversion. How can I convert this type of RAW file to .DNG?

I don't understand your question. Here is what I do in the Digital Negative Converter:
    - Step 1 is "Select the images to convert"; I click on "Select folder" and navigate to the folder containing a .CR2 file
    - in that window, I see "No items match your search." even though it contains a .CR2 file from my Canon camera. Whether I then click on Select or Cancel makes no difference, since the program does not recognize any files.
    - If despite that, I click on Convert, I receive an error message "The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files."
In other words, .CR2 raw files are not being recognized by the latest released production version of the converter.

  • Unable to convert my canon cr2 files to DNG

I cannot convert my caonon 1200d cr2 files for DNG on my vista machine as the latest version of adobe raw convertor will not run on my vista machine/..@

Your CR2 files require Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 or higher and as you have discovered ACR8.4 is not compatible with older operating systems.
ACR8.3 was the final update to raw support for Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OSX 10.6.
You should have a copy of Canon DPP with your EOS utility disks. You will need to install and use that, until you get a new computer. You can convert CR2 into tiff or go straight to jpeg, using DPP.

  • Question on converting edited CR2 files to DNG

Sorry, I cannot find a separate DNG forum. If this question is in the wrong place, please direct me to the correct forum.
I have lots of CR2 RAW files on my computer, and I am considering converting them to DNG. Many of these RAW files have already been edited and so have a separate XMP sidecar file containing the edits in the same folder. If I convert (using the Adobe DNG converter) these edited RAW files to DNG, what is converted? The CR2 RAW file alone, so that the converted DNG file is the same as the original unedited CR2 file? If so, what happens to the orphaned XMP file? Ignored?
My concern is that I will lose all RAW edits if I convert to DNG because the conversion process ignores the edits contained in the separate XMP file.
Can someone explain this to me? Thanks.

So what you're saying is that the DNG conversion de-mosaics the image?  I guess that's not surprising, since for compatibility with older Photoshop versions you'd have to deliver a more or less standardized format.
Kind of throws a big monkey wrench into claims that converting to DNG is functionally equivalent to opening raw images directly though...  I was experimenting with a "fall leaves" image last night and no matter what I tried with the 2010 process I was still able to get more detail in bright red leaves with the 2003 process.
I suppose that says if you want maximum flexibility and control you'd better buy the Photoshop upgrades and stick to opening raw camera files directly.  A variant on the "if you want to play you have to pay" adage.

P.S., Does the DNG converter read the centralized database as well as XMP files?  I personally prefer the database to the extra files.

  • Can't convert CR2 files with DNG converter

After buying the Canon T2i, I realized that the files (CR2) won't open in PS.  I did my research and found that the dng converter was the thing I need.  Unfortunately, the converter won't recognize and convert the CR2 files that I try to convert.
I am guessing I will probably get a reply telling me I should have done my research before I bought the camera (as I have seen in other forums), but I am hoping for a more productive (and less offensive) answer.
    Thanks!

I see a lot of answers speaking about having the most up to date version of the Camera RAW Plug-in. I have a similar issue with my .CR2 files... I cannot open them in Camera RAW because it tells me that my camera model or make is not supported by the Plug-in, and so I was directed by other forums to just try converting the .CR2 files to .DNG. I already had the Adobe DNG Converter (version 6.5 I believe), so I tried this. It too told me that my files or camera make were not supported. However, I have always been able to successfully both open my .CR2 files AND convert them to .DNG. I had not updated anything on my camera nor on my Adobe programs and for some reason this last attempt to open RAW files failed me... I have no idea what change would have led to it. Luckily I shopt in both RAW and Large JPG but I certainly don't want to rely on my JPGs of course... Any idea why this problem might have arisen now if it had always worked easily in the past?
    Thanks!

When i want to open my .CR2 file from my Canon camera 40D into bridge or photoshop CS3 it does not open it and it can't recognize the file in some way.  My computer is working with windows vista.  I really need help as i dont know why it is not doing it.  Thanks

Distilling the Tech Note down, essentially you can't open .CR2 files in CS3.  I think CS4 is the first version that has .CR2 compatibility.  One option that doesn't involve upgrading to CS4 is to download the free Adobe DNG converter and convert your .CR2 files to .dng.  Then you can open them in CS3.
No, that isn't right.  The Canon 40D was supported in at least the last version of Camera Raw for CS3.  There are a few things you need to verify.
    1.  In Photoshop, go to Help/About Plug-Ins and click on Camera Raw in the list.  It will tell you what version you have installed.  You should have Camera Raw 4.6 listed, and it should only be listed once.  If there are additional listings then you have a problem.  Camera Raw will now work.
    2.  Get the download instructions from the Adobe download website and make sure Camera Raw is installed in the right folder.  It must be that specific folder, and there can be no other versions of Camera Raw in the Adobe file structure.
    3.  Are you able to see your raw images in Bridge?  If not, then there is something wrong with your installation.
Check these things out and make sure everything is set up properly.  Then maybe we can help you further.

  • Canon CR2 files in Photoshop CS4

    Hi Everyone,
    I need a bit of help.  I have a G5 Dual 2.7 Power PC.
I also have photoshop CS4.  I cannot see Canon files from a Canon 5D Mark 2 camera
in photoshop unless I convert them to DNGs.  I have an older computer, same type but its
not water cooled and I can see CR2 files in photoshop there.  I had to kill photoshop on that
computer to put it on this one.  Ive tried to find the update to correct this but I keep getting an
alert saying I need some kind of  Manager first.  When I download that I get an alert saying the
architecture doesnt support it.  So Im back to ground zero.  I can do the DNG conversions but
Im just wondering why it works on an older computer but not this one.  Does anyone have an
idea of what I am doing wrong?  Or does anyone have the link to the correction.
    thanks
    tony

Yes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4.  I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.

  • DNG Converter no longer converts focusing points from Canon CR2 files

    Hi all,
Up until some time between July 2010 and September 2010, the focusing points embedded in the original Canon CR2 files were also converted and containded in the DNG-file. Hence up until this point in time the focusing points were shown in Apple's Aperture. Since September 2010 this is no longer the case.
I had hoped for the DNG Converter 6.7 Beta to have corrected this truncation of the files.
I am using af Canon EOS 1D Mark III. I am running OS X Lion 10.7.3
    1. Has anybody else experienced the same change in behavor of the DNG Converter?
    2. Can anybody still see the focus points in Aperture or equal Imaging program?
    3. Does anybody have an idea, how to contact Adobe for such a feature request?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Allan

    Hi MadManChan2000,
Thank you for your answer. So what you are saying is that for some reason Apple's Aperture is no longer reading these MarkerNote metadata correctly?
    Kind regards,

  • Cant convert CR2 files to DNG.

I downloaded Abobe DNG converter but then discovered that it couldn't convert the CR2 files from my canon EOS D550 to DNGs. So I downloaded the update that said it would be able to do that but it wont install. Any ideas how to get round this. Abobe wont help me cause im using creative suite 2.

Do you mean the DNG converter won't install?  It is a freestanding independent program, so if it won't install there must be something wrong with your download.  Are you on a PC or a Mac?  What OS?  How are you trying to install the converter?  What version are you trying to install?

  • Trouble converting Canon Raw images to DNG

    Hello!
I have been using the Adobe DNG converter for a while without any trouble to convert my .CR2 (Canon Raw) files, but today all I'm getting when opening the program is this:
So obviously I can't click on any of the buttons. I had the 8.7.1 version, so I downloaded the 8.7 version and the problem persists. I'm using a PC with Windows 7 if that helps. So far I've tried restarting my computer, uninstalling and re-installing the program (both versions), trying it with Photoshop opened/closed. Nothing works
Do you have any idea what I could do to fix this? Or is there an alternative that I could use to convert .CR2 files to .DNG?
    Thank you!

  • Opening Canon CR2 files in CS3 on a Mac

What Camera Raw plug-in do I need to open Canon CR2 files in Photoshop CS3 on a Mac?
-Please send download link and installation instructions.
    Thanks

    Martha,
You have not provided any information about how you updated to ACR 4.3 or details about your setup, whether you have purged the Cache through the Tools menu in Bridge, trashed Photoshop and/or preferences, Repaired Permissions, or performed any other maintenance, nor what error message you get or what happens when you try opening your images, nor any information as to the exact version of Photoshop you are running (10.0.1?) as well as the OS (14.0.11 or 10.5.7?).  You really need to post in the Camera Raw forum so that you can browse existing threads and so we can point you to relevant posts.
Provided the files themselves are not damaged or corrupted, the most common problems are installing the ACR plug-in in the wrong place and not removing the obsolete ACR plug-in that is originally installed by default with Photoshop.
If you go to the Photoshop menu > About Plug-in > Camera Raw…, you should see only one instance of Camera Raw and it should be 4.6 when you select that menu item.
If you have any other question, please post in the Camera Raw forum, not here.  A discussion of this nature should be over there, where it can benefit other Camera Raw users, not just you.
