Problem converting to AVI using Cinepak

I need help to figure out why an AVI file, which should be roughly the same size as another, is three times bigger.
I have split a two-hour movie (captured in DV-NTSC 48KHz at 720x480) in four thirty-minute sections.
I then converted the sections into AVI with the "Using Quicktime conversion" choice under the File Export command. The first 30-minute section resulted in a 920MB file, while the second one is 2.8MB!
I opened them both in QuickTime Pro 7, and looked at the "Movie Info" window: both seem to have the same specs: 29.97fps, 720x480, Cinepak, and 32Khz stereo audio. The only difference is the transfer rate, which is much larger in one than the other. However, when I went back to the specs for conversion, I couldn't see how to control that particular parameter.
If anybody has any ideas as to why this is happenning, I'll be extremely grateful!
TIA,
BK

Thanks for your prompt reply, Jeffrey.
I don't have much experience with compression codecs, and I'm basically going by trial and error.
Ultimately, these files will be uploaded to our ftp site, then downloaded by a studio in Brazil, to be used on a PC with a Vegas (?) video card, and imported into ProTools for synch dubbing. They need good resolution in order to see the lips of speaking actors.
Obviously, I would love to hear of a codec that compresses half an hour of 29.97fps video down to 100MB, but I suspect that the rez will be poor. We have Discreet Cleaner, but it hasn't worked out too well for us, takes a long time to process, and the results -to the eye- are not much better than what we've been able to do.
Now, I'm very interested in seeing what my options are for future reference, but at this point time time is of the essence, and all I want to achieve for this particular project is video files within 1GB.
Again, thanks a lot for your feedback. I look forward to your reply.
Cheers,
BK

  • Problem converting long AVI to MOV

I am trying to convert one hour AVI file into a MOV format using Quicktime
PRO on a PC.If I try and convert a short AVI video of less than 5 minutes I
can can convert it and change the settings of both Video and Audio to suit
my specification. If however I try and convert a longer AVI say one hour I
can only set the video characteristics but NO audio at all.The audio
settings area is greyed out and not changeable.
My question is this.Is it possible to convert a long AVI video (say 1 hour)
to a MOV format in Quicktime PRO on a PC and still be able to set the audio
    to the required specification?
    Thanks Stu
P.S im using QT Pro 7.3

If the audio settings in the export dialog can't be adjusted then the audio codec used in the file isn't supported by QuickTime Pro export.
    MPEG-1 is playback only.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can convert your AVI with MPEG-1 audio.
http://perian.org can also help QuickTime Pro with some codecs used in AVI's.

  • Problems converting XviD files using Adobe Media Encoder

    hi guys,
so i downloaded a trial of adobe premier cs4 to see if it would be any good for editing my videos, im importing media from 2 compact video devices that encode in XviD MPEG-4.
I heard that you cant really directly edit XviD and that i should recode it first, however when i try to media encoder instantly crashes saying:

MPEG of any kind is not supported in the trial.  That might explain it.

  • Problem Converting AVI (DV) to MOV (DV)

I have a number of AVI (DV) files that were previously imported on my PC, which I want to covert (using my Mac) to the more Mac friendly MOV (DV) file format.
I read that the best way to achieve this is to open the AVI files in Quicktime Pro and to convert the files to MOV using “SAVE AS”, as opposed to “EXPORT”. I understand that the benefit of using “SAVE AS” is that there is no recompression of the DV stream and that only the Container is changed (which results in a lossless conversion).
The problem is that the new MOV (DV) file is significantly larger than the original AVI (DV) file. For example, the size of a 13.5 minute clip increases from 2.95 GB to 5.88 GB.
I wouldn't expect such a significant change in file size if only the Container is indeed being changed.
I have also tried MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion, but I get the following message when I try to open the AVI (DV) file “File open error: this movie file is not supported”.
I have confirmed using Gspot that the AVI (DV) file is a 'Type 1' as opposed to a 'Type 2' file. Gspot also indicates the following information about the file “Multipart OpenDML AVL (3 parts). I don’t know if this is relevant.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    UPDATE PROBLEM SOLVED:
I was able to fix this problem by following a reply that I received on forum.videohelp.com. Basically, I was able to fix the problem by using a program called DVdate to convert my AVI (DV) files from Type 1 to Type 2. Now all is well. Here is the link below to the answer.

Re: Problems with computer stability using Pr/AE CC. -Computer Specs Listed. SOLUTIONS?
           Peferling
    ==================
Boy, you are not kidding,  I was running both the cloud and CS6, and I was ready to throw in the towel.
I have changed computer's twice now, have a solid state hd, (which I love) with 10 terabytes on externals, I run NOTHING except adobe's stuff on my HD now, and only one version of it, and it runs like a dream.
So, I updated the OS to win 8.1, updated my peripherals,
I dumped CS6 (hated to, but for some reason my 3D won't work on it, it works fine with the cloud) but in CS6 the software was turning it off after adobe's last update.
I've made a virtual machine for my development environments which do not play well with adobe's stuff.
My rule of thumb has always been double what the manufacturer states is required for RAM, but imho, with my current upgrades: upgraded to win8.1, and other peripherals, spent two weeks changing stuff over and it's about 100 times better than trying to run CC and CS6.   - No kidding, the change is astronomical
But for anything PC I'm way over powered, and for Adobe, I'm still underpowered.
Next, I'll just get a mac for Adobe, and stick with my pc's for ms/CentOS.   Too, it seems like since the cloud was initiated Adobe is rolling out the updates faster and changes without warning. The processor/3D issue,  I had no warning on it, just woke up one day and "no more 3d" :S
But I do love the cloud, so, guess there's got to be some dark lining to it. <g>

  • VOB to AVI  using Auto GK Software; But won't perform correctly in CS4

Hello. I purchased Premiere CS4 because someone in the Adobe marketing dept. told me I could get DVD footage into it. For a year now I have been working with it and can get my digital footage into it and work with it fine. I found out after I purchased it that VOB files must be turned into avi files in order to use the footage in CS4. So, I found and downloaded the Auto GK (auto gourdian kot?) free software and successfully converted the files (which are actually my parents priceless 8mm Reel to Reel footage from the 50s-60s that I had transferred to DVD). This R2R footage on DVD is a primary component of the music videos I'm trying to make for them. Anyway, I can watch these 'vob converted to avi' files on my computer (Windows XP, 250 GB hard drive w/ 2 external hard drives, 3 GB RAM...no problem w/computer) AND can import into CS4, but then they don't perform well in CS4...I can only see thumbnail and might play for a second really fast and then stop, or won't play at all, so they are useless in there even though I can import them. I know I have settings wrong somewhere, but don't know if its in CS4, or in the VOB to avi software. Can someone help me? I watched some of the tutorials in the CS4 help section, and one 'teacher' said, "...and if you need to import DVDs, you can do that too." But then he doesn't tell you how to do it and I can't find anything on the subject. Any help will be appreciated. Do other video editing programs make it easier to import DVD footage? My parents are old...I can't wait too much longer...it's been a year I've been trying to do this. Thank you, Claudia Barrington

  • Problems converting videos

i recently tried to convert a movie that was .avi format to mpeg 4 using mpeg streamclip 1.0. There is no video and the audio is messed up. Is the problem that the movie was .avi to begin with? Or is soemthing else wrong? Thanks.

do you know whats wrong than? how large were the files you tried to convert?
Since I do not have a Windows machine, I cannot verify whit I might assume to be the problem.
Can you, for instance, play your AVI movie in the MPEG Streamclip player? If so, I would assume all is well on the AVI decoding side of the house. If not, then you have located your problem.
If AVI is working fine, then the next question is whether or not you have properly installed the QT 7 or QT Alternate 1.61 software (but not both).
P.S. Sorry about confusion regarding MPEG2 component above -- was reading from the Mac OS page and not the Windows page.

iTunes does not support .AVI files. However, you can use iSquint to convert the file to an Apple-Friendly format (Its free, and really easy to use) http://isquint.en.softonic.com/mac

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

having problems converting pdf to word. I'm not able to convert the file, what do I need to do?

    Hi prates77,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble converting files. Are you receiving the conversion error regardless of the file that you try to convert? Does the error occur whether you use the web interface, or convert via Reader? And an odd question: how many files do you have stored in your Acrobat.com account? We have seen reports of this error when there are a large number of files stored in the root folder of your Acrobat.com account.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,

  • Problem converting Publisher 2007 files with PDFMaker

    Hi all
I hope someone can help me.
I am a technician at a large company and we recently upgraded a users PC to Vista Business (32 bit) from XP Pro.
Since this was done, the user has a problem with Publisher files on Office 2007.
When trying to convert the files using Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 with the PDFMaker plug-in on Publisher, it spools the file to the AdobePDF printer and the job then disappears from the printer but the converting bit just hangs at 60% and Publisher 2007 freezes up and Acrobat is not launched showing the converted publisher file.
This is only happening when converting Publisher files. Word Excel etc are working fine.
When logged in as administrator, it works perfectly. The converted publisher file spools to the AdobePDF printer, disappears from the queue and Acrobat Standard 9 is launched showing the publisher document as a PDF file. Giving the user administrator rights is not an option. This apparently worked perfectly for the user when his machine OS was XP Pro using Office 2007 and Acrobat Standard 9.
I have tried a repair of Office, a repair and then a complete uninstall and reinstall of Abobe Standard 9. Also given the user full control of the Adobe folders but the same thing happens with the Publisher conversions.
    Any ideas?
    James

    Hi all
This problem is now resolved. I got it to work but the frustrating thing was I dont know how I did it! Messed with some settings in Acrobat 9 and the AdobePDF printer and retried it and it worked
    Thanks anyway
    James

  • Problem converting Excel Charts

I am using Acrobat 9.3.4 (pro extended) and MS Office 2007 service pack 2.  I am having problems converting the charts in Excel.  The charts in Excel are vector, but when I print to the Acrobat driver or save in Acrobat, the graphs are converted to a low quality bitmap.  Any ideas how I can preserve the quality of the original graph?  Any idea how I can preserve the vector drawings?

I suspect the upgrade to Excel 2007 is at fault here, but I have not found any settings to get my old functionality back.  I posted the same question to an Excel board, and they referred me to a similar thread, which sounds like other people are having similar problems.
It looks like some older version of Excel was having trouble when people used "save as pdf" (Excel was resizing the graphic and moving it off the page.)  To eliminate the problem, they seem to have changed their graphics creation engine from vector to bitmap.
I have an older version of Excel (2003 sp3) at home, and the pie charts, for example, are clearly being created as vector drawings.  In Excel 2007, they appear to be bitmaps created at screen resolution, which in my case is a fuzzy mess because of the need to resize the drawings.  On the Excel board, there is a link to a "hotfix" but I don't know if it is the same issue.  I will post the link here if it works.
I tried beating my head against the keyboard, but it has not helped.

  • Problem converting file

I tried to convert a PDF file to word doc and received the following message: File failed to be converted using Adobe ExportPDF online.
I also tried to convert the file using the online application and again received a failure message.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this problem?

    Hi santafe2014,
I'm sorry that you're having trouble converting your PDF file to Word. Sounds like you've tried to convert both from Reader and from the web interface. The following steps resolve many conversion issues, so let's start there.
    Clear your browser cache.
If you're using a work computer, check with your IT team to confirm if you have firewall/proxy settings that restrict the ability to upload files to the Internet.
If the issue persists after the steps above, please try another web browser.  A list of supported browsers for accessing the ExportPDF service is available here:http://www.adobe.com/acom/systemreqs/
Please let me know how it goes (and if you're experiencing the error with just the one file or several?
    Best,
    Sara
