Problem copying DVD

Hi all,
I have a DVD with a couple of video recordings that I'd like to copy for a friend. It was recorded on a Panasonic DVD recorder and was finalised in the same machine.
I've followed the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2059, but I am not getting through the process without a hitch. I notice that during the copy process, Disk Utility only spends a few seconds writing data, before then spending a good ten minutes finishing/finalising. At the end of the copy process, I get the following message from my Mac: 'Unable to burn "diskname.cdr". (The device failed to respond properly. Unable to recover or retry.)'
When I reinsert the DVD, DVD Player opens, and I am given the message that this is a previously played DVD - would I like to play from the last played position, or from the beginning. Whichever of the options I choose, I am then offered the chapter headings of the original DVD recording, so some data duplication has taken place, but when I try to play any of the chapters, I get a message, saying 'Skipping damaged area'. After this, I am unable to select anything to play.
I've repeated the process three times, now.
Can anyone offer any pointers, please?

Thanks for the link, Dave.
In order, I did the following:
- Reset PRAM - no effect.
- Attempt to reset NVRAM (I didn't get the option to type in 'reset-nvram' by following the instructions in the link, so...) - no effect.
- Drag languages around in System Preferences-International - no effect.
- Try in another Mac (my G4 Powerbook) - successful copy!
- Try another brand of DVD (and I didn't realise I'd also gone from DVD+R to DVD-R in the replacement process) - successful copy!
Thanks again,
Matt

  • Disk Utility....problems copying DVDs

First off, the DVD’s I will refer to are ones I made myself, on this same machine. I’m not duplicating commercial stuff.
A while back I successfully used the Disk Utility to make a disc image of an old DVD and make a copy of it. Now, however, I can’t get rid of the disk image. It does not appear on the desktop or in my list of volumes, but it is always present in the lower-left window of the disk utility tool.
How do I get rid of it?
2nd issue: I’m trying to do the same thing again with another DVD. This time it always fails to create the disk image in the first place. I go File→New→Disk Image from disk→(and I select) CD/DVD master. It spins for a second and the error says:
Unable to create “Disk 5” no such file or directory.
But the disk is fine and functions in every other way. I was thinking perhaps problem 1 is causing problem 2.
    Any ideas?

IIRC, just click and drag it out of DU's window (if that doesn't work, include the CMD or OPT key when you drag).
For item two, make sure you select the underlying volume and not the top-level disk item.

  • Problem copying some files.  Error messages -36 and -50

I'm trying to backup my user folder onto an external LA Cie drive, and some of the files refuse to copy. The files, it seems, are mostly image or mov. files, and there appear to be dozens of "bad" ones, maybe hundreds. Several tens of thousand have no problem copying, but the bad files foul up the entire process.
The error messages I tend to get are as follows:
--"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [file name] could not be read or written (error code -36)"
--"The operation cannot be completed because the item [file name] is locked."
--I also get error code -50 sometimes.
Can anyone diagnose this problem and tell me how to fix it?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Todd--
First thing I think I'd try would be to see if a different cable helps. Sometimes a bad cable can cause problems with an external disk. Also, make sure nothing but the drive is connected to the PowerBook.
Second, look at the LaCie web site and see if there's a firmware update for your drive. I found a post on another board where the person had the -50 problem with a LaCie DVD drive that was cured by a firmware update.
    The -36 error means there's a disk I/O error:
<pre class="command">ioErr = -36, /*I/O error (bummers)*/</pre>Look in your console log at the time you try to copy one of these files. It might have a line something like this:
<pre class="command">Apr 07 09:00:00 username kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error.</pre>The username and disk0s3 parts will change a bit. You can figure out which disk is which using the Terminal application. Just copy and run this command:
<pre class="command">diskutil list</pre>That'll give you the names and BSD identifiers (which is the diskNsN name) for your drive's partition. That should tell you where the actual error is occuring.
As for the -50 error, that's an error in the parameter list. That can be caused by copying Mac files to FAT32 formatted partitions. If your LaCie drive is not formatted as Mac OS Extended, you might come up against this problem, too.

  • DVR620KU Recording Problem VHS-DVD

Having a problem copying from a VHS tape to DVD. Followed the instructions in the Owners manual and and checked the input settings but when the recording process is completed there is nothing on the DVD. Any suggestions ??
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say there is nothing on the DVD. Do you mean, something is recorded, but it's all black? Or do you mean that no recording appeared to take place at all?
Here are some steps to follow to confirm proper behavior:
    1. Have a VHS tape to play back and a recordable DVD (such as DVD-R).
    2. Press INPUT SELECT on the remote multiple times until you see L2 appear on the TV screen. Be sure you have nothing connected to L2 (which are the connectors in the front of the unit). You should see a blue screen.
    3. Press VCR on the remote.
    4. Insert the VHS tape. You should see the counter set to 0:00:00.
    5. Press DVD on the remote.
    6. Insert the DVD into the DVD tray and wait until it is fully loaded and the progress bar goes away on the TV screen.
    7. Press DUBBING on the remote. You should see the VHS tape start to play back, and the DVD start recording. Let it record onto DVD for around 3 minutes. Then press STOP. Let it finish processing until the progress bar goes away. Then press TOP MENU and navigate to the last thumbnail, then press ENTER. You should start seeing the dubbed video play back.
    Report back with your findings.

  • Problem playing DVD

I have an instructional DVD that generates some errors when playing in my MacBook Pro. It plays fine on another machine, so I borrowed an external drive and burned a copy on my MBP.
Although I had to start it manually, the copy played fine for a while, but now it is a few months later, and when I try to play the copy I get repeated Media Not Supported messages, each time followed by the Start Over or Last Time dialogue. Then it will play just the audio.
If I keep trying, eventually it will mount (as name.cdr) and play, and once started it will play fine until I exit the DVD Player. Usually what happens is that I keep trying to open files on the copy until the DVD player crashes, and when it restarts the player it all works fine.
I'm a little fuzzy on the differences between the original DVD and the copy, and the correct procedure to start up the copy. But I don't understand why it is so much harder to get it going now than before.
    Any suggestions?

I'll confess it has been long enough I don't recall how I made the copy. What is the proper way to do this?
Note that the original DVD only had playback errors on the internal drive; it played without problems using an external drive, and this is the one I used as the source for the copy.
I just inserted a DVD and looked at it from a terminal and this is all it shows
    dr-xr-xr-x 4 nero nero 136 Sep 26 2003 Scrooge Color
No extension, just the name - and the DVD looks like a directory.
I have not used the built-in copier in a while - I use Toast which simply has a copy DVD mode.
Insert original DVD and select Copy. It makes a clone of the DVD. Naturally it cannot be protected.
DVDs are special in that they contain two folders - a video and an audio (which is rarely used) and if the Video_TS folder is not there or something is improper, it will not self-start. Inside the video folder are VOB files which are playable on their own, but the entire structure is complex if the DVD is to play normally.
Again, I think you essentially made a copy of the DVD as if it were a data DVD rather than a movie DVD.
If you use the built-in burner after making the image copy, there should be a burn option that has no extension, but is merely a copy of the original DVD which also has no extension. I switched to Toast because it works much more intuitively and never fails.

I think that error is because fping is not suid.  My /bin/ping is also suid, but dvdrip uses fping and you get a message like that if fping is not suid
    dvdrip-master
will probably guide you to whatever is causing the error message.
Do not use divx codec if you have a p4, there is a bug and another error message.  Xvid is better and it works but divx is set by default.
dvdrip, allows cluster ripping, if you want to rip on in the world, use that.

  • Brand new at copying DVDs - need help.

Hope that I am in the right forum. I'm brand new at using DVD copying since I've only had this computer for about a week. I've had problems in copying my home video DVDs on DVD+R discs which were created on a Sony DVD recorder. These are obviously not copy protected. I tried making a copy for a friend but ran into problems, phoned Apple and followed their instructions for copying and burning -R discs but that didn't work for me. On my follow up call, they suggested that the problem may be either the +R disc (rather than -R) or the fact that the discs were not burned on a computer but rather on the recorder. They suggested the use of other software. So I searched the web andI downloaded something called Mac the Ripper and using the dialog box in that program, do have the contents of one disc on my hard drive as far as I know. But I don't know how to copy (burn) onto a blank disc either using this same program or something else. In other words, what are my next step by step instructions to burn what I hope I have on the hard drive onto a blank disc - I still have +R discs left so I'll likely be using them. Thanks for any help.

From all the helpful information posted here, I have found out that copying DVDs is not quite as straightforward as I had hoped it would be using my new computer. I would have to purchase software which isn't supplied on my iMac such as Toast or Popcorn to do the job as far as I have found out from a number of sources. Toast is a bit more costly than I want to spend for just this one task although Popcorn is more reasonable. I am beginning to think that for the few DVDs that I really need to copy for my friend, the easiest route is to use my DVD recorder, transfer the contents of the DVD to the hard drive on my recorder (yes, the recorder does have a 160 GB HD) and then burn a blank DVD from the recorder's hard drive which is what I have done dozens of times in the past. Of course, it takes 2 hours to transfer the video from a DVD (assuming it has 2 hours of video on it) to the hard drive and then only about 4 - 7 minutes to burn the video onto a blank DVD from the HD of the recorder. Using the computer, I had hoped to reduce the time it takes for that first 2 hour step with the recorder. I'm not even sure if Popcorn would significantly reduce the time for transferring the video from the DVD onto the computer. I'll have to evaluate whether or not the cost of something like Popcorn is really worthwhile for me. Thank goodness, copying audio CDs is much more straightforward on the computer. Thanks for all the help.

  • Problems with DVD Player 3.0.1 in G4/466

Problems with DVD Player in G4/466
Yes, I've a g4/466 with two disks. In the first there's system 9.2.2 and the DVD player goes perfect. In the second I've system 10.2 and the 9.2, and the DVD Player (3.0.1) on the system 10 begins to jump in the dock, but stop and nothing happens, I can't open it...
There's any way to reinstal it form system disks???
Or any download to check the error?
    Thanks

    1. Try using Pacifist to extract it from your Mac OS X 10.2 installation disks, and then run the combo updater for your version of Mac OS X and any applicable DVD Player updates.
    2. Open the Console application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and look for lines relating to the DVD Player.

I have no problems copying iMovie Events from one Mac to another, however, how can I copy iMovie Projects from one Mac to another?  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you.

This should give you some good insight, I'd probably store them on an External HD on the old machine and then just drag and drop to the new machine.

No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.

  • CS4 problems copying and pasting masked items

The problem: Copying and pasting a placed image combined with other Illustrator art with multiple gausian blurs that have been masked/grouped. Placed image type does not matter. PDF, JPG, TIFF, etc placed in Illustrator CS4 (or 3). Some images are complex and others are not.
What happens: After copying and pasting, the masked (grouped) image breaks apart into separate components that are no longer masked/grouped. Happens with different files with different images on different computers. WIth or without text in document. Sometimes image pastes correctly but most times it does not.
Hardware/OS: 3 separate iMacs (20" and two 23") all with intel chips but different processing speeds. All running latest and most updated version of Leopard. All with 4 MB Ram and more than a 100 GB of free hard drive space.
Software: Illustrator CS4 (latest update) and CS3 on one of the 23" iMacs.
Solutions tried so far: Ran Onyx, repaired permissions, scripts, cleaned caches, zapped PRAM and on one iMac, ran Disk Warrior. Tried in Safe boot mode and tired with a new user account. Created new files with new images and tried old files. Tried opening files from the server and from the desktop. Threw out illustrator prefs and emptied trash.
Thought it may have to do with font conflicts but some files don't have fonts. Turned off font management programs (Suitcase on one iMac, Font Explorer Pro on others, all updated to latest version) and restarted so only system fonts loaded. No luck. Turned on fonts used in various documents, still no luck.
Thought it may have to do with memory issues after copying masked items. Sometimes the copied image would paste correctly and then the next time I pasted it, it would not. Before pasting a second time I would copy a small item (to clear the memory) and then paste it and then recopy the masked item and paste that. Still no luck.
Checked activity monitor but nothing looks to be a memory hog or out of place. Happens on all three iMacs and while the OS and Illustrator are common to all three, Fonts and font management tools are not. No weird plug-ins or third party extensions installed. Plus it happened in safe boot mode so all extraneous fonts and such should have been deactivated.
Curiously, if I drag copy the masked item using the option key, the masked item copies fine. I know this can be used as a work-around but I would like to resolve this as sometimes the designers need/want to use command-c/command-v.
Not sure what else to try. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you.

This might work, this might not. I have copy paste problems
on a regular basis and all that works for me is closing Captivate
down and then re open and continue. At worst, a reboot tends to
solve this glitch in my experience.
    Good Luck

I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!

Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
    But thanks

  • Problem copying text from word to dreamweaver

    Howdy..
had a problem copying text from a word doc (07) to
dreamweaver, for some strange reason it missed a complete section
in the middle, 2 paragraphs gone... no errors... no blank spaces,
just would not copy and paste the section, everything b4 and after
was fine, the only way to correct this was to copy to
textpad/notepad first and then recopy and paste..
    anybody have any ideas ?
    anyone seen this happen b4?
    cheers
    Pythagonal

nope, there didnt seem to be any special formatting in the
word doc, just a straight forward press release, two of them
actually and they both had sections that didn't copy and paste.
what was very strange was it was sections in the middle of
the docs, and wasnt the same in both, was 2 different areas in
each, just when u copy'd and pasted it gave nothing..
and ive never seen anything like it b4,
ive just upgraded to CS4 a few weeks back and this is the
first time ive noticed it, ill keep my eye out and see if its
somethng to do with the way word is formatting stuff..

what disc number for acrobat 9, if any?
