Problem Corel Draw .eps files

I'm building a 1-color book in InDesign CS5. The illustrator generating the art files for this book is supplying .eps files created in Corel Draw. She says that she's greyscaling the art but when I load it into InDesign my preflight says that the art is generating cmy plates. I can fix it by saving the .eps in Adobe Illustrator and greyscaling it myself, but I'm wondering what is the disconnect between Corel Draw and InDesign. Is there some way I can use her files or is there some settiing she is not using that will make these art files read as one color (black)?
JB

Thanks for the quick response! I don't know the Corel product very well, nor
am I adept in Adobe Illustrator.
If I open the .eps file in Illustrator how can I view these extra channels
if they exist?

  • How do i open a Corel Draw crd. file in Adobe Illustrator CS5? ASAP

    Hi,
I use Adobe Suite CS5 and a client supplied me a Corel Draw cdr. file, so i need to bring that into Illustrator CS5 and i have no idea of which version of Corel Draw was used to save the file, and i have no more details about the file. Does anybody have a solution?

Like AI files, Draw files can be saved with our without compression. AI cannot open compressed .cdr files. This is a very common situation among AI users who think that AI cannot open their Draw files, because the collections of kazillions of clipart files which always ship with Draw are saved with compression.
So get your client to check whether he saved the file with compression turned on. If so, ask him to send it again, but without the compression option.

A new client has sent me his vector based graphics as .cdr

  • Success in importing Corel Draw X4 files into CS6?

I've inherited CorelDRAW X4, and we're about to upgrade to CS6 (a really big jump). I'm trying to make sure that my files will cleanly import into Indesign/Illustrator CS6. I've downloaded the trial in advance of our upgrade, but both the support & sales folks tell me that I won't be able to in the trial but should be able to in the full version. I, however, remain skeptical because the sales person didn't even know what CorelDRAW was.
Has anyone had any success with this?

CorelDRAW is a Windows-based vector illustration program akin to Adobe Illustrator. There is no direct ability to open or place recent versions of CorelDRAW native documents (any version beyond 10) – .CDR files – in Adobe Illustrator. Adobe InDesign has no ability whatsoever to open or place and CorelDRAW native documents.
What you can do is to open your .CDR files in CorelDRAW and save them in Adobe Illustrator (.AI) CS format there. Then open those documents in Adobe Illustrator. Fidelity will be preserved for the most part. If you need to have the content editable in InDesign, you could copy and paste from there.

  • InDesign PDF importing to Corel Draw - problem

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone has come across this problem, we have several designers in the office, all using either InDesign or Corel Draw X3 (all on PC).
Every time we import a PDF that has originated from InDesign into Corel Draw, the file corrupts. Most commonly, the text appears as Chinese writing and makes no sense.
When exporting the PDF from InDesign, all the text is set to curves, so I am not even sure why Corel is recognising the text elements as text, when they have been set to curves.
I have tried various export options from InDesign with no luck.
    Help!!

When exporting the PDF from InDesign, all the text is set to curves, so I am not even sure why Corel is recognising the text elements as text, when they have been set to curves.
That would be Outlines, actually. Sorry, but what you are describing here is impossible. If you open the PDF with Acrobat and check its Fonts tab, neither embedded nor missing fonts should be listed -- the list should be entirely empty. If there are a few font names, your convert-to-outline procedure is not correct.
As for the problem Corel has with perfectly acceptable PDFs, I have no idea. Converting to outlines is, actually, frowned upon, as usually the PDF file format is robust enough not to need this, but it was a nice try if the fonts caused problems in other programs.

  • CS3 EPS files placed in Quark don't print????

    Hello -
Been fighting some issues on CS3 over the last few months. It seems that I have a problem with placing EPS files from CS3 into Quark and successfully getting a printout. My Specs:
    Mac 10.5.6, G4, 1GB RAM, Illustrator CS3 (13.0.2), Quark 7.5, HP Color Laserjet 4500.
Now, if I go to print a document with "Tiled" output from Quark, I can only have 1 CS3 EPS placed in the file, anything over 1 results in a Tile for the first page, but no second "Tile" when I should get two.
If I step and repeat a picture box with the same EPS 2 or more times, and it fits on one page, I get no output (the job spins up on the printer then quietly dies).
Now before you jump on Quark, I will say that AI CS2 files do NOT exhibit this behavior, it ONLY seems to apply to AI CS3 files.
If I use PDF over EPS, there is no problem. But I have years of legacy document that I do NOT want to have to create PDF's of my EPS files.
Anyone got some insight on this? Thanks!

    >But I have years of legacy document
If these art not CS 3 files then you are ok correct?
The only problem you say is with CS3 is that correct?
Save them back to CS2 as a copy, or upgrade to cS 4 perhaps but I do not know if that would fix the problem. The other thing I can think of that might be an issue is that at one time Quark needed to have Illustrator CS 3 EPS file saved with a tiff preview. Perhaps the type of preview is the cause of this problem.
Try changing the preview in the EPS Options.
Those are my thoughts on this I hope something in it will be helpful.

  • Open eps-files in evince

    Hi everybody
For months I'm observing problems opening certain eps-files in evince (3.14.1-2), okular and similar.  At the moment I've installed evince, and depending on the file it works more or less.
So if I open an eps-file created with latex using tikz, it seems to work without any error.
If I open an eps-file saved in matlab, most files open, but there isn't anything visible. In the console I don't get an error (e.g. https://www.dropbox.com/s/bm13jvtgqgq55 … .eps?dl=0)
If i open an eps-file exported from mathematica, most time evince just crashed, with either the error

    or
    undefined -21

    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
which is from this file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pznkke4a45cso … d.eps?dl=0 - even worse: most probably only creating the thumbnail lets evince crash, because if I afterwards open evince without a file, it crashes again, until I've opened some other pdf files directly.
What is the difference between those files? I found different things about the error in the last quotation, but this should be fixed in the newer ghostscript versions (and gs seems to work with all files).
Another thing is: Why is zathura able between differentiating between those files? It just does not list the files which would lead to an error ...
Has anybody an idea what could cause these problems?
    Regards

You aren't doing anything wrong. The help files are out of date. Starting with PSE 11, adobe dropped support for many file formats, including EPS. If you have windows and an older version of PSE you can move the EPS parser plugin to PSE 12. This won't work on a mac.

  • Just installed Photoshop Elements 13 - how to open .eps files?

I used to work with photoshop elements, never had a problem to open .eps files.
but with the latest version photoshop elements 13 unfortunately i cannot open .eps files anymore.
Do you have any idea how to solve this problem?
Or do I have to buy another photoshop software....
    Thanks!

I was rudely told by adobe there is no way to open an eps file. When I tried to respond he
canceled our chat. But I read you can make it tiff? and do it that way? I tried to no avail. I paid 119 for this upgrade and now can't do what I need to. Any thoughts anyone to solve this problem? I have graphicstock.com and a lot of their files are either, jpg, png, eps , pdf files. I don't know why Adobe
took away this and image extractor. Elements 13 is not what  I thought it would be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been watching youtube videos to no avail.

  • Did Illustrator change how EPS files are dealt with between CS2 and CS3?

Here's an odd question for you. I have an EPS file that opens fine when I use Illustrator CS2. However, when I try to open the same file in Illustrator CS3, 4, and 5, the colors come in wrong. I don't mean color slightly off wrong, The colors are changed to something completely unrelated and scrambled. To make things more confusing, everytime the view changes, the color and  patterns change as well. This makes me think that it is something with  how Illustrator is interpreting the EPS file. If I try to open the file  in Photoshop or Distiller, the file comes out looking normal. Any  suggestions? Thanks for your input!
    ~Mike

I do Graphics/Production work for an archaeological firm. Before I started working here, they decided that of the different export options from our GIS department, EPS was the format that gave us the least problems and the highest quality. This was decided when we were using Illustrator 10. Now we're making the shift from CS2 and 3 to CS5 (getting our department on the same version), we are running into this problem with the EPS files and I am trying to find a solution to make all of our lives easier. One of the other options that we are kicking around is ditching the EPS file format all together and shifting to using a high quality PDF instead. Could this cause any loss of quality?

  • What is the best way to save an ai file so it can be opened in corel draw

I have an ai file that needs to be opened in corel draw by a client. It needs to remain editable all paths and colors ect.
Whats the best way to save it so it can be.
yes I know corel is not as good as Illustrator but its what they have.

Moving files back and forth between Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW is tricky. There's quite a bit more to it than knowing what version of CorelDRAW the client is using. If the artwork is fairly simple then there shouldn't be any problem with transferring the artwork into CorelDRAW. If the artwork has gradients, transparency effects, a lot of clipping masks, etc. then it's going to be a lot more dicey getting it to import into CorelDRAW properly. In addition to the .AI file you provide, you should give the client a PDF they can view in Adobe Reader or Acrobat so they can proof how the artwork is really supposed to look.
I use Adobe Illustrator CC and CorelDRAW X6 in my work. I've used both applications for over 20 years. I don't consider either application better than the other. They both have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. I'll do a good bit of creative work within CorelDRAW to use certain features Illustrator either lacks or just doesn't do as well. Or I may need to design a really big project at full scale and Corel has a much bigger art board than Illustrator. Most of the time I move a lot of the stuff I created in CorelDRAW over to Illustrator for further refinement or moving it into Photoshop as paths or smart objects or just getting it ready to print (I don't like Corel's color engine even though it has improved in recent years).
Like others have said, you need to know the basics of what the user has -mainly which version of CorelDRAW. The newer versions like the one I'm using can open Illustrator CS5 files. For older versions, you may have to save down to CS2 or even really old versions like Illustrator 8.
CorelDRAW will not support certain Illustrator-dependent effects. For instance, if you apply a gradient to an object outline it will be lost when opened in CorelDRAW. A lot of other effects won't be maintained when opened in Corel unless they are flattened/expanded. Some effects may even have to be rasterized, and that can create other issues. Out of effects that are maintained, some may have to be adjusted. CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator handle things like gradient fills differently and don't understand how to portray gradients from their rival application accurately. Some nice fill that was created in CorelDRAW may have to be tweaked or completely rebuilt when opened in Illustrator.
I get a lot of customer files in CorelDRAW and also a lot in Illustrator. That reason alone makes it necessary for me to have both CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator running on my computer.

  • Can InDesign CS3 open Corel Draw files?

    Hi,
We have Corel Draw files that need to be converted to InDesign CS3. Can you advise if InDesign can open them?
    Thank you
    Barb

No. Indesign can Place EPS or PDF files saved from CorelDraw.
Illustrator can open CorelDraw files. You could then copy and paste from
Illustrator, although if it were me I think I would want to keep my
    drawings in Illustrator, not Indesign.

  • EPS files wont save? Ai files, no problem!

I am using CS6 and have had this problem for while. The strange thing is it is now happening on TWO computers? Different specs, but my computer is:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac13,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          3.4 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          8 MB
      Memory:          16 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          IM131.010A.B05
so it is not a spec issue.
I have tried saving basic EPS files with NO content at all to the desktop (I am not working to/from server). They work fine. But if I add 3, 4, 5 basic outline rectangle shapes, it struggles to save the EPS. It spins for about 10 seconds and then comes good. If I add objects to the files, it takes longer.
BUT!!! On very rare occasions it will save basic files quickly. WHY OH WHY WOULD IT DO THAT!!!
I have: updated all software and IOS is upto date. I have had a clean install of the OS, and recently unistalled one version of Illustrator CS6 and installed another version (original version was 16.7 the new version is 16).
I have searched forums and come up blanks. The other CS6 apps are fine. Speedy and top draw. No problems.
Can anyone help? I am really struggling with this and it is affecting my work load.
Please note, I have taken the other computer back to the Apple dealer, they have checked it and said there is no problem? Run all the software ETC... and nothing is showing up as a culprit. I keep thinking it is software rather than computer because EVERYTHING else is perfect.

Do you face the same problem, when you print those file to "Adobe Postscript File" printer?
Please try deleting all the printers in your system, try save EPS, install back all the printers and try once again saving EPS.
