Hi,
I'm trying to free up space on my phone but have noticed when managing storage the photo library is using 7.5GB, however all photos have been deleted?
Any ideas how to delete the photo library?

You can't delete the Photo Library. The iPhone stores photos the same way iPhoto does on a Mac. All photos are synced to your Photo Library. The various albums/folders merely contain pointers to the actual photos which are in your Photo Library, they are not duplicates.

You delete them the same way you put it on the phone, unsync it with itunes. you can only delete pics from your camera roll.

Deleting Photo Library from iPhone 4 - Help!

Help! I can't figure out how to delete the Photo Library from my iPhone 4. Here is what I did:
I was using my sister's Mac and downloaded some photos she took from her iPhoto onto my iPhone 4. Now I can see the photos on my phone in a new folder called "Photo Library." But there isn't an option to delete the photos like there is with the Camera Roll folder.
When I hook the phone up to my own Mac, the photos don't appear in iPhoto so I can't delete them there.
When I hook the phone up to my PC, the PC doesn't seem to think the photos are there either.
When I open the phone with iTunes, the Photo Library folder doesn't appear in the folder options so I can't "unsync" the folder.
Yet they sure are taking up a lot of space on my phone!!! I feel like they are permanently stuck on my phone now. My sister lives far away so I can't just plug my phone into her computer again.
Will restoring the phone finally get rid of the Photo Library? I can do this as a last resort but only if I know it will fix the problem. Thank you!

Use iTunes.
Under the Photos tab, choose Sync Photos from and then from the dropdown select choose folder...
Create a new empty folder by selecting New folder and click Open
Then Apply and Sync.
That should do it. At least it did for me

Problems deleting photos

Has anyone had the same problem I have, deleting photos downloaded to my iPad? I mark them and then press the delete icon and nothing happens.....

No problem for me. Pressing the trash icon brings up the Delete option key. Pressing that then immediately deletes the picture. You can't delete photos in the Photo Library from the iPad. You can only do that from a desktop running iTunes.

Problems deleting photos in i9

while editing and deleting photos in the library, I found that I could not delete any more photos. the photos stayed in the library but also were in trash. After numerous tries, they would not delete. In previous deletes, one time there were NO photos in Trash, when i know i had just sent photos INTO trash. Now i have tried to export some photos and iphoto froze on me.
any suggestions from the experts...a corrupt library. How can it have gotten corrupt when I have never done anything with it except for upgrades (but haven't had any problems) for since iPhoto9

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Problem deleting photos in Aperture 2

I'm having a problem deleting any photos from Aperture 2.1.4 on a 2008 MacBook running OS X 10.6.8. I have restarted, reinstalled Aperture, repaired permissions and I am at a loss as to why I cannot delete any photos. I was able to just fine until recent.

Make sure you've selected a photo, a yellow highligh border around the photo, in the album before you use the Delete key. If you just hit the album icon to bring up the photos and use the Delete key without a photo definitely selected you will delete the album. But in that case you should get this wanring window at the top of the iPhoto window:
So if you're sure that you have selected a photo then the library is misbehaving and the following might help: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Deleted "photos library.photolibrary" file

Ugh. CleanMyMac2 recognized the new Photos file as an "large & old file" instead of a system file and I stupidly listened to it and deleted it. Now I am getting "Photos cannot find the System Photo Library named “Photos Library.photoslibrary” and I don't know where the photos (if they still exist) would live. I need to restore the file and find the 30gb of photos. The system file I deleted was only 4.6gb which leads me to believe they must be somewhere on the computer.

Well, if everything you care about was in your iPhoto library before all of this happened, the good news is that you have not lost your photos. The bad news is that retrieving them all out of the iPhotos database file (it's a container just like an app file is that you can open by right clicking and choosing to Show Package Contents) is going to be a pain in the rear because of the multitude of folders they will be nestled in which I believe all just have numeric names that will make no sense. You will have to open every single one of them and copy the files out so they can be imported again to Photos. This here is the worst case scenario but all things considered, it sure beats losing your precious photos. They are all inside of that iPhotos data file in tons of folders.
I think too based on the error you reported that your existing iPhoto hadn't been updated to the most recent version before 10.10.3 was installed which older versions are not compatible with. They won't open and there's no place now to download a newer one. So I don't think you'll ever be running that iPhoto app you have again unless you revert to an earlier version of OS X over it. I wouldn't bother myself but that's up to you.
I absolutely agree with the very sound advice to avoid system cleaning products, etc. The ones on the web are bad news as a rule. There are some light duty ones on the app store but really they are not needed. As mentioned above, the system does a good job of taking care of itself. There's no need to obsess over it and waste time and money doing so. It's designed so we don't need to do that.
I don't want to rub salt in the wound so please take this in the spirit in which it is intended, to help you. Before you do anything else about this at all, buy yourself a 1 TB USB 3.0 external hard disk which should run around $100. or maybe less on Amazon.com for example. I would recommend the Western Digital brand personally as I have found them to be Mac compatible whereas I had trouble with a Seagate that would not work properly with Time Machine even though it was branded as being especially for the Mac. They conceded the problem was on their end and offered me a refund to their credit but I would not go with them again after that. So that's my advice for a disk drive. Do yourself a huge favor and attend to this right now so that while working to fix this it becomes impossible to lose your photos. Time Machine works very well, is completely unobtrusive backing up in the background hourly or however you need to use it if on a mobile Mac and it is a very simple affair to recover lost files from previous daily, weekly and monthly backups as needed when a disaster like this strikes. Time Machine is the nicest, easiest, most reliable backup program I have ever used and I've been using personal computers since Apple IIs were around.
You will never regret the money spent on a backup drive to protect you against loss. Yes, you can put stuff up in the cloud but Time Machine backs up the entire system for you so no matter what gets screwed up, deleted or lost it can be recovered. So, I really hope you will do that for yourself so you never, ever have to deal with a situation like this again. Next time could be worse. What if the photos really were gone? Can you imagine? Don't let it happen to you.
So, in my opinion while it is going to be some work, the simple and foolproof way of recovering from this would be to run a full backup with Time Machine first. Then stash the existing Photos library file in case you wind up wanting it for something along the way here. Once you've made a copy someplace safe, trash the one in the pictures folder and fire up Photos to create a brand new empty one. Then make a copy of your iPhotos library file and stash the original someplace safe. These will already be in Time Machine at this point but I like to play it safe. With that done, right click the iPhotos library file and go about the business of navigating through all the folders within it, moving out all the photos you come upon as you go. Later you can import all of that into Photos which will using the metadata help organize it somewhat by dates, etc. and you can go from there. This is a pain but it is simple and guaranteed to work. It is not complicated. It is just work is all.
By the way, the reason I say to move the photos out of the iPhoto library is simply to help you keep track of what you are doing and so you will know for sure when you have gotten them all. To facilitate this once each folder has been emptied of the photos you want, delete it. Remember, we made a backup copy so we can do this stuff without worry and we also have it backed up on an external drive with Time Machine at this point. So you can do this stuff without worry to the extra copy of the library. In this scenario you have two other untouched copies to fall back on if anything goes awry but I don't see that happening.
Another word of caution. I would make it a routine to check for updates at least weekly so you don't miss any important ones like the iPhoto one you don't have now. You could use the Reminders app to make a little reminder to do it Fridays or something. This will help you a lot more than a destructive cleaning utility.
So I hope all that is helpful to you. I especially hope that you will take my advice to stop right now and attend to the Time Machine backup before doing anything else. Then you'll protect yourself against really losing them all somehow.
If you have a Mac using friend with the most recent iPhoto app, using a copy of that as directed above may be your salvation and save you the work I just outlined. However, if that is not an option the method I outlined above will work assuming nothing has been done to your iPhoto file to remove the photos from it which I very much doubt has happened here from what you describe.
By the way, meaning to help further here i just looked inside my stored away iPhoto library so i could tell you where your photos are. When you right click and choose "Show Package Contents" from the menu, the library file will be opened in Finder. You'll see a bunch of folders here and some files, etc. The folder you want to open at this point is called "Masters." This is where your photos live. Inside this folder you will find more folders, each one labeled by year for the year of all the photos in that particular folder. When you open one of those, the fun begins as you find number folders to open probably multiple levels deep until you arrive at one with a bunch of photos in it. That's all there is to it. You just keep moving through all the folders, moving out all the pictures and deleting each one when done to help maintain your sanity, I mean keep you place in what you are doing and that's that.
I hope that last bit makes things clearer and possibly takes a little fear out of this. Honestly, it isn't complicated after all you will find once you being finding and moving all your photos. And if you have the backup I've been harping on you about you won't have to worry about a thing while doing this nor in the future.
Don't feel too badly here. A lot of us, myself included, had to learn this by suffering disaster first too. You aren't alone there.

Can you help me delete photo library & duplicate photo library

I don't know what I did, but I somehow copied 44 of my daughter's music images into my photo library and then created a duplicate with 43 images. These 87 images are taking up room and there is no obvious way to delete them.
Here's what happens when I touch camera roll it brings me to the photo library -- where 43 out of 44 images are hers:
I click edit and the only options are share via email, faceboook, twitter, etc. or add to which leads to create a new album. I don't want to do any of this. I just want to delete them to make room.
The same options apply for the Duplicate album as well.
Can you help me delete the photo library and the duplicate library on my phone? I only want to keep one video in the camera roll and all of the rest of the images can go.

Thanks for your response. I think you just isolated my issue -- I was trying to upload music and somehow wound up syncing my daughter's photos to my iphone. I don't know how to delete them because not all of the album/folders are appearing there. Do you have any suggestions on how to find them?

How to delete "Photo Library"?

How can I delete my "Photo Library" and pictures from my iPhone 3GS? I want to delete everything but the camera roll. I've hit "EDIT" but it won't let me delete anything but wallpapers.

Photos synced to your phone can only be removed from your phone the same way they got there, through the iTunes sync process. Connect your phone, iTunes running, & under the photos tab remove the checks for all albums/folders you do not want on your phone. Hit the apply/sync button & they will be removed from your phone.

How do I delete photo library on my phone

My memory is getting sucked up because of my photo library. And finally discovered where pictures went that I just took but not going into my camera roll. I saw a suggestion via Google and deleted my photo library AND everything else but the camera roll. I did back up everything before I did, too. But then I was blocked from adding any of my picture files until I allowed the photo library back onto my phone. And then it's back to sucking up my memory. I just got my 32GB iPhone 5 and cannot afford to get the 64GB one. But that would be wasted if all my pictures go into this sunflower box! And you cannot delete any picture, never mind the file. Please help! I don't have a lot of apps, but I've had to delete them to take a picture or shoot a short video. It's that bad!

I went to second link. On my laptop, from sync photos from, my only choice is pictures. I do not have either of the folders the second link mentions. On my list on my laptop (Windows Vista), I was hoping Photo Stream was the same as the Photo Library as it has the same sunflower button. All this did was ADD photo stream onto my phone. But I was able to delete it. So I say again, I really want this tab/app off my phone and I cannot seem to be able to get it off of it.

Sync problem with photo library

I am not sure to post this question here, but since it happens with my apple tv i hope to be in the good section.
Most of the time when i start iTunes fresh and i want to sync my apple tv, which start at starting up iTunes, i get a error that it could not find the photo library.
When i go to the photo library tab i indeed see no events, or pictures at all. When i start up iPhoto and i look again, the problem is solved, but the worst thing is at has to resync my comleet photo library. This also happens with my iPod.
First i thought it was a update wich i was waiting for, but now, since the last 08 and 10.5 update and still no progress i hope somebody could help me out.

That really sounds like ownership and/or permissions.
While everything is working properly, can you do a "Get Info" on the iPhoto Library in the Finder and write down what it says about ownership and permissions?
Then when it misbehaves, look again and see if it has changed?
Unfortunately, my library lives on a networked drive, so the ownership may be different. But in case it's useful, here's what mine says about the iPhoto Library folder:
Owner: system (read & write)
Group: wheel (read & write)
Others: (read & write)
Hmm, that got me thinking, so I purposely created a new library on my MacBook HD (note that I am running 10.4.11). Its permissions are:
Owner: {my username} (read & write)
Group: {my username} (no access)
Others: {blank} (no access)

I'm trying to delete the "photo library" off my iPhone (as well as all the sub folders it has created). I do not want to have all the images from iPhoto to be on my iPhone as well. When I plug-in my phone, I go to the photo tab in iTunes...un-click the "sync from iPhoto" option at the top...it then asks me if I'd like to remove all the images added via iPhoto to which I answer "remove" but then nothing happens. I've tried re-syncing it, re-starting it (phone, computer and itunes) but nothing happens. The phone is a 3G.

OK I was able to figure it out. First, I had to check the "Sync Photos from iPhoto" box in the photos tab. Second; I had to check, "Selected albums, events and faces and automatically included" Third; I to select "NO EVENTS" from the drop down menu. By selecting *no events* I was able to remove all the photos I did not take with my iPhone.
Hope this helps someone else too.

i've swapped computers, upgraded itunes software etc, and now i'm left with a load of photo library pictures on my iphone 4s that i can't seem to delete taking up all my precious memory. i;ve tried looking in the sync function, which is how they got there in the first place, but can't get rid of them!

Try going to Settings>General>Usage>Photos & Camera. Swipe to the right over Photo Library, then tap the delete button.
