Problem deleting photos and cannot shut down or log out

I have managed to put a whole lot of photos on my desk top which I want to transfer to the trash can (over 5000). When I moved them to trash an error message "Item ....jpg is used by Mac OSX and cannot be opened" and you have to press OK. This is happening for every photo. It won't let me shut down or log out. I don't want to have to press OK 5000 times. Can anyone help?

Dr Bettina, I had similar problems with Mavericks. I installed it on a Mini and a 13" MacBook Pro. I can't speak to your disdplay issues, but I can confirm the inability to logout, shut down, or restarft without a forced, power button shut down. I can also report frequent System Prefs freezes and finder issues, like folder contents taking half a minuite or more to render, or not appearing at all. And while a few Adobe CC apps actually ran faster, InDesign ran like molasses uphill in Decemner.
I tried uninstalling or disabling numerous 3rd party apps and pref panes. I unplugged everything but the keyboard, ran DiskWarrier, repaired permissions, did fsck -f, trashed various preference files, reinstalled the OS... You name it, and I tried it — short of a potion using eye of newt.
After two days of totally hosed productivity, I restored OS 10.8.5 on the Mini so I could actually get some work done. However, I've decided to leave Mavericks on the MBP as a sort of crash dummy, and will install and thoroughly test all updates until stability has been achieved. Then — and only then — will I upgrade the Mini to Mavericks, even if it means waiting 'til a .2 or even .3 update.
Good luck to you...

  • My ipad freeze and cannot shut down

My ipad freeze while my daughter is playing her kids game.i try to shut down the ipad by pressing the start button but it wont help and now battery is drained flat. What can i do after recharging it.Tx

I would try letting the battery die completely. After it's dead you should recharge it and it should work. Before you resort to letting the battery die, try holding the top button and the home button for about 15 seconds. This is the restart feature which usually works when your device is frozen. Good luck!

  • Finder does not autostart and cannot shut down

After installing Mountain Lion the finder application does not autostart (including the top bar and desktop icons). I can start it manually or by opening another application, and all works normally except that i can not shut down, restart or go to sleep from the apple menu. It is however possible to use reboot and halt from the terminal. Does anyone have idears for fixing this? Any help would be appreciated.

Try booting in Recovery HD (holding down cmd-r keys) and repair disk and repair disk permissions (but turn off Filevault if you use it).
Any unresponsive file servers? Have you disconnected peripherals such as flash cards or other drives?
Guess you also could try out the Trash trick:

  • Mac-boot and auto shut down (quirky behavior out of nowhere)?

Brand new powerbook and these two things started happening and would like to know how to correct:
    1. Upon starting PB, rather than booting up, get a DOS looking screen with message that to boot up I should type in "mac-boot" after which machine boots up normally. What is this? How do I change/reset so it boots normally?
    2. Upon moving the mouse after machine is resting a few minutes (but well before going to sleep), dialogue box pops up asking me, "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" How do I get rid of this?
    Thanks so much for assistance,

  • Sun AppServer7 shuts down on log out

    Hello,
I successfully installed AS7 Platform Edition on a new Windows 2000 (DELL) and verified with sample webapps. I upgraded the license so that I can access remotely and verified this as well. However, when I log out of the machine on which I installed AS7 PE, the AppServer shuts down. I am the administrator for this machine and I set the service for both admin-server and the default server1 to start automatically. All this does is start automatically when I log back in, which is not what I want - I would expect not to be required to be logged into a machine in order for the server to be running.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

I had the same problem, but I solved it by adding the JVM option "-Xrs" to both the admin server and my production server instance. In the admin case, the option must be added by manually editing the server.xml file.

  • Mini Mac unable to shut down or log out properly

After logging out of username, screen does not go back to the various users screen. Thought that by skipping the logout, I do a Shut Down (which some times I do this shortcut). It does not shut down. Only command it activates is Sleep. What steps do I need to do?

I would start troubleshooting by starting in safe mode and then doing a permissions repair.
do a web search on 'mac permissions repair' to find out how.
follow that process after you startup with the SHIFT key held down. you'll see a message that says you're in safe mode/safe boot.
    then restart.
    If that doesn't resolve it...
Create another user account, if you don't already have another. (You do this in accounts control panel in system preferences.)
login to that other account and then logout.
if that works, then the problem is with your user ID only.
if the problem persists, you have a global computer problem.

  • HT200197 My Apple TV not working properly. I can't access my photos and it shuts down.

Don't know how to get help. My Apple TV all of a sudden isn't working properly. It goes to load my library from itunes and takes a very long time to do so. When it finally stops and I click on slideshow it just goes back to the main screen. Help!

In iTunes switch to Song view and enable the iCloud Status column by pulling down View > View Options and selecting the "iCloud Status" option. Close the small window. Now click the column to sort on it and see what the status is for all the music that is not showing up on your iPhone 5. Post back and let us know.

  • Cannot shut down the computer !

I cannot shut down my computer after I click Apple menu>shut down>>shut down again. Then got no response for a while, prompt out "Logout has timed out because the application Finder failed to quit. To try again, quit Finder and choose Log Out from Apple menu." But I have already close Finder by clicking the RED button on top left corner. From the Finder pull down menu, I cannot find the "Quit" command. When I click Apple Menu again and click Force Quit, it prompt out a small window and ask to Re-launch Finder, or Cancel. If I click cancel, nothing happen, if I click re-launch, it flash and keep asking Re-launch. What's happened to my computer? Anyone can help ?

This is a problem that I've been having with the two IMacs our office uses. It doesn't happen every time, which makes it even more difficult to troubleshoot.
What happens is the computer goes into shutdown(or logging out) mode, hangs for awhile, then the desktop just comes back on. Often there will be an error message saying something like "Logout timed out due to failure of Safari to quit." And sometimes it will list a different application. But, in all instances, there ARE no applications open. When I launch the Activity Monitor, it confirms that there are no hidden apps running anywhere. It just won't shut down or log out. At that point, you have to force power down with the power button, which is not a healthy way to shut down on a regular basis.
I've run disk utility and permissions repair off the system disk. I've zapped the PRAM. My latest attempt has been to reset the SMC, so I will have to monitor it to see if it did the trick.
I'm sure that if I called Applecare at this point that they would tell me to archive and install. But that is a bit drastic a step and isn't really troubleshooting. Not when it will take considerable time to reconfigure these machines for uncertain results. Since A.) the IMacs were right out of the box when this problem began and B.) the MacPros and MacBooks that run the same OS and the same software DO NOT experience a similar problem, I suspect it wouldn't resolve the issue.
I just want to exhaust all other possibilities before taking the archive and install step, because you always end up losing prefs from third party software, etc...
Has anyone else experienced this problem before???

  • I was importing photos to picasa from iphoto and it shut down when i returned i had no photos in iphoto

i was importing photos to picasa from iphoto, and it shut down when doing so.  when i restarted i photo, all of my photos were gone.  where are they??  please help??

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I can't shut down my computer because it says mail is open.  It says to close mail and continue shut down.  Problem is I can't open or close mail now.  Can't shut down my computer at all.  What can I do?

If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot.

I am trying to use the trial creative cloud software on a PC windows 8.1 - I've downloaded and removed Photoshop CC 2014 two times - every time I open the file it says there is a problem and it shuts down and closes. I can open indesign and maybe other apps but photoshop no. Any ideas?

I don't think I can access the crash report? Excuse the ignorant questions I'm about to make am a relative tech novice.
Soo - as mentioned every time I open photoshop it crashes - it just says there's an error and the program will shut down and if there's a solution windows will notify me. Then nothing...
I've tried to look in photoshop files for the detailed crash report & the system event viewer but cannot find a file with those names. I've also looked in the windows files for files with those names but cannot find them either - so I don't know where to look.
    Any guidance would be great.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I recently had to swap out my iphone 4s and I am having problems restoring photos and videos from icloud.  I get a message on my phone that says " the URL you are requesting is not found on this server".  Pics and videos have been deleted too.

I recently had to swap out my iphone 4s and I am having problems restoring photos and videos from icloud.  When I restored my phone from icloud, half of my pics and videos have been deleted, the pics that were restored on my phone are very blurry, and the videos won't play.  I get a message on my phone that says " the URL you are requesting is not found on this server".  I have erased and reset my phone twice, but every time I do it, more pics and videos are deleted.  I have backed up to icloud and iphoto, however, some of the pics are no longer on iphoto either.  Is there someway to get the videos to play on my phone again?  Make the photos not as blurry as they are now and to restore the pics and videos that have been lost?  I really would love to have them back, this phone is supposed to be the best and right now it doesn't seem to be.  Please help if you can.

I too have noticed that once i restored from iCloud. Pictures blurry and videos wont play!
    Need help too!!
