Problem downloading RAW + JPGS

I shot RAW + JPG. There is a problem. When trying to download the card it would freeze the whole computer. I went and downloaded just the jpgs. I then deleted some of the bad shots. I then downloaded the RAW file only of that image that I had deleted. It downloaded fine. So there is a problem with doing the RAW + jpg. I've done it before on my laptop that is old, Tiger, and has iPhoto 06. But now I want to do it on my brand new Mac that has Leopard and iPhoto 08.
So how do you work around the computer being able to download both RAW + jpg?

Deborah:
Other users have reported the same problem. If they were to shoot both RAW and JPG they couldn't import into iPhoto. When the shot either RAW or JPEG alone they could. Since iPhoto creates a jpg version of each RAW file that is imported why not just shoot RAW alone?
To workaround the problem use a card reader to upload the files to a folder one the desktop first or us Image Capture, located in the Applications folder, to manually upload to a folder on the desktop. IMO using a card reader is preferred as it saves wear and tear on the camera's ports and battery.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Canon G16 problems downloading RAW into lightroom 4

Hi just had a Canon G16 as a birthday present. Love it.
I have lightroom 4 and my computer is running the latest edition of Snow leopard.
But am having problems downloading RAW images. Lightroom doesn't seem to want to read them.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

The Powershot G16 needs LR 5.2 or newer to work:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
LR needs OSX 10.7.x or newer to work
    https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/system-requirements.html
You can try the DNG Converter 8.2 and see if it’ll run on your OS, and if so, then convert the G16 raw files to DNGs and those will open in your older LR4:

  • Problems downloading raw files in elements 8

Hello, I have elements 8 and cannot download raw files from my Canon 650D, is there a fix for this?
    Many thanks

    You have three alternatives:
    (1) Upgrade to PSE 11. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original CR2’s as backup) or (3) Use Canon DPP bundled with your camera.
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.2
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.2
You can convert a whole folder of CR2 images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Problems downloading RAW files into Lightroom 4 from a 70D camera.

I had a canon rebel xsi and had been able to download my RAW files to lightroom 4.  However, I have recently bought a 70D and is won't download into Lightroom 4.  I have been told that Lightroom 4 doesn't support the 70D and I have to upgrade to Lightroom 5.  Is this correct, or can I get some kind of plug in?  Also if Lightroom 5 how much would it be for me to upgrade, is an "upgrade" cheaper to someone who has already got Lightroom 4.

Once you buy LR 5 you can install any of the LR 5.x versions where LR 5.7 just came out and supports the newest cameras, like the Nikon D750 or Canon 7D Mark II along with all earlier models.
It would be wise to download and install the LR 5.7 as a trial and make sure it works for you before buying the upgrade.  The minimum OS is 10.7 and Win 7, I think, so if you’re on XP or Vista or OS X 10.6 then you’re out of luck.
The various version of LR are available on the Adobe Updates site:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
They will run in trial mode for 30 days or until you enter appropriate serial numbers.

  • 5d Mark III not downloading RAW

Got my 5D Mark III a couple of days back. I took a few pictures in RAW-JPEG. While I tried to download, it launches EOS Utility(latest version) and hangs. I tried the same CF card on 40D and it was able to import without problem. I tried other software like Picasa, Adobe Bridge, iPhoto, Picasa and Adobe are not able to connect to the camera. EOS Utility is able to connect and I was able to remotely control the camera and take photos. I was able to download JPEG only files as well. But when it comes to Raw, the software goes unresponsive and loses connection. Once in a while everything works fine as well (even RAW), that is the strange part
My Computer and softwares are up-to-date. Infact the 5D MIII I got through CPS Load worked fine without issues. I also made sure the CF Card and Cable are also fine.
Is it a known problem? or should I return the camera. Thanks in advance for your response

As Stephen said, any additional info about your system will help indeed.
In my case I'm using Win XP 32 bit in this machine and don't have any problems at all to download RAW+JPG.
I'm using the bundled software that came with the camera (CD/DVD), still didn't update it.
    - Just in case, why don't you try uninstalling EOS Utility software and all its additional components, and reinstall it again from the CD/DVD? At least to discard a software malfunction.
    - BTW, we found that many USB cables worked fine with 5D Mark II but not with 5D Mark III. After changing the USB cable we were able to connect the camera to the computer without any problem. Sounds weird, but after some use the connectors of some USB cables loosen and don't work properly on some cameras or devices.

  • Can't download RAW photos from EOS30d

I have just started using a Canon EOS 30d, but am unable to download the RAW photos (.cr2) that I have taken. I have tried downloading direct from the camera, and also using a cardreader but no joy. Had no problems downloading RAW from a EOS 300d, but they were .crw files. I'm puzzled!!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What system version are you using. Tiger does support the EOS 30D as shown here.
You might have to convert them to dng files and use that format. You can get it here: Adobe DNG Converter for Macintosh. It might work on the new cr2 files.
    Do you Twango?

  • Aperture 3.3 problems RAW+JPG Import

After the update on Aperture 3.3 I have the following problem: Before import everything looks normal (see picture one). Aperture imports none jpg and Raw files as picture pairs and the Raw import looks completely colour-wrong. Moreover, there is no field more than Raw treatment
Any idea for solving this problem?

Also using a Panasonic (.RW2) I have had exactly the same problem, with exactly the same "colour effects". I did some varitions of importing and observed the following. The test shots were RAW only on a newly initialized SDHC card.
In the import dialog, if RAW only was selected, no previews were shown. Same if JPG only. If RAW & JPG selected, a preview was shown (even there were no jpgs on the card).
No presets, Auto Enhance and several others had no effect (i.e. same error).
The photos imported perfectly using iPhoto, and were then perfect in Aperture.
After thinking some, I suspect the preview image is the problem (I wished I'd exported them as tiff to see, but it was yesterday and I deleted the dodgy imports).
I had some pictures (also .RW2) not in the library at all (I'd been using them to try out LR4). I drag/dropped them from a Finder-folder into Aperture,  (not import) by droppong them into the Inspector panael of Aperture; they were perfect BUT said they were RAW/JPG pairs which they were not.
Come on Apple. There was a time when your software was bug-free. Nostalga isn't enough.

  • Downloading raw images from Canon Rebel XTi and problem with Border FX

Aperture no longer downloads raw images from my Canon 400D / Rebel Xti and installed Lexar Professional UDMA card. I am able to download images to my Dell laptop. This is a new phenomenon only occurring since about 10 days ago. I am currently able to download images from my Canon 5D.
Also, my computer has locked up 4 times today when I have been starting Border FX. I have seen a screen saying that I have to restart my computer by holding down the on button. I have the most recent version of the Border FX software.
    Any suggestions please?

Join the crowd! I just started to experience exactly the same thing on both of my systems. Apparently the latest raw camera drivers broke something related to Canon Rebel cameras. I'm using the Rebel XT.
I tried a quick experiment the other day. I shot a bunch of test photos forcing the camera to store them as JPEGs. I was able to download those without a problem. I then forced the camera back to raw mode and shot a few more pictures on the same memory card. The JPEGs that I was able to download previously no longer will download and neither will the raw files.
I tried reverting to the older camera raw driver on my notebook but for some reason it won't let me do that. I haven't tried reverting on the desktop yet.
Hopefully this problem is fixed quickly. I've got a ton of pictures from a recent vacation I'd like to off load.
By the way, this affects the iPhoto, Aperture and Image Capture apps.

  • Problem in downloading RAW  images from a Canon 7Dmk2.

I subscribe to Creative Cloud and use LR5. I now have a problem downloading images from my new Canon mk2. I get a message saying that these files are not recognised. I understood that LR5 had been upgrade to cater for this new camera. mike

Updates are not automatic. You need to check the application manager occasionally. If there is an update then that update will be available to install from the application manager. I had to log out of the application manager and log back in before I was able to get the update to 5.7.1. But the curious thing is that Lightroom 5.7 should also open the files from that camera. Have you installed Bridge? What version of Camera Raw are you running in Photoshop? Can you see the images in Bridge if you have updated Camera Raw to 8.7.1?

  • Lightroom 4.4 Download Problem(s).  Since updating I have been unable to download RAW files

Since updating to LR 4.4, I have been unable to download RAW file formats.  In addition, normal .jpg files stopped working today!  I can successfully still download into LR 3.6 which I kept on my system.
I'm shooting with a Canon 1D Mark X and using LR on an iMac.   This is making workflow impossible.  Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

    A couple of tests:
    1. Create a Dummy User account with full Admin Read/Write permissions. Does that fix it?
    2. Make certain your active User account has full Read/Write permissions for the storage location of both: The Catalog, and The Image Files.

  • Problem downloading Camrea RAW for Fuji f770.

I have problem downloading Camera RAW for Fuji f770.I have downloaded the correct Raw conversion file for the F770,  & also the latest Adobe Application Manager file, but still can't get it to work.
    Can anyone advise?
    Ross

If you are talking about the F770EXR, according to the Adobe supported camera list that camera was added in ACR version 6.7/7.1. You will not be able to open those RAF files with Camera Raw 4.6, ever. There will not be a version of Camera Raw for CS3 that will open those files. However, the DNG converter, 7.1 or later, should convert those files to DNG. If it isn't doing it that would suggest that something is wrong with the file. Can you post one of your RAF files to dropbox so that we can take a look at it. It doesn't have to be of any sensitive subject matter. You could just take a picture of anything and post it. Then we could see if we can pinpoint the problem.

  • Raw imports fail if shooting in RAW+JPG

I've got a canon Xsi and set it to record RAW+JPG for some testing. I installed 10.5.4 which claimed to support RAW for the camera. But I could never get any of the images to import.
I've now figured out what is going on. I was using the USB cable to plug into the camera which uses the Image Capture framework to copy the images to the computer. There is a bug in the image capture framework that it always uses the size of the JPG file when it copies the file over, even when copying the RAW file. This has the effect of truncating the RAW file, causing the RAW conversion to fail.
To work around this problem, use a card reader that causes the card to mount as a disk drive. You'll then get the whole RAW file and the image will import properly.
    I've filed a bug.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Also if you just shoot RAW I believe iPhoto will import correctly from the camera. Since iPhoto creates a jpg file for each raw that is imported you will still have both types of files in iPhoto. Since I don't shoot raw I don't know if there's any difference between the jpg created by the camera and the one created by iPhoto when importing RAW only. If you get a chance to test it out and report that would be of interest to others. Thanks for the feedback.

  • RAW+JPG renaming/deleting workflow broken?

I tried to shoot RAW + JPG.
LR show only the NEF files [RAW] and uses the JPGs as a "sidecar".
if I rename teh NEF the JPG gets renamed with the same filename and the proper different extension.
the problem is when I delete the rejected NEF files - the corresponding/relative JPGs don't get deleted as well
and I need to do it manually in the finder outside of LR,
am i doing something wrong? I find this behavior inconsistent and it could be annoying if I need to do that with many files at once.
I can always download the images from teh camera to TEMP download folder - move the good photos to a different folder and empty the JPGs that have not deleted.
a bit of a cumbersome workflow...

Amazing, so it's actually intentionally 'broken'. At the very very least, mentioning this in the manual would have been nice...(or did I miss it?) I can see where they're coming from as seen from a *particular* workflow perspective, but they are making some pretty big assumptions along the way, all of which can be challenged.
Assumption (1): RAW and JPG files with the same name are *always* both created in the camera.
    - I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I have sometimes saved rendered JPGs (from RawShooter) alongside my RAW files. The upcoming(?) RawShooter settings conversion utility will not give the exact same results, so I'd like to keep the JPGs in my library.
Assumption (2): The JPG is always inferior to the Lightroom-rendered RAW.
    - Not true. Sometimes the camera vendors employ some sophisticated wizardry to their JPGs that can sometimes yield satisfying final results or a good reference for raw editing. I suspect this holds even more for the newer batch of SLRs that supports 'in-camera developing', applying proprietary coloring effects, etc to the rendered JPG.
Assumption (3): People get horribly confused when they see *choose* to shoot RAW+JPG and actually see two files.
    - Well, I'm probably not the target market, since I'm one of those 'organized' photographers, but ok. If I have chosen to create two files that every other imaging program considers to be different, I have consciously done so, and I do not get confused if I see different files. In fact, I *expect* all my files to show up in Lightroom. Of course having neat options to hide either type of files is a plus.
As for suggestions to improve this in future versions, I'd say:
    * Make it an option (selected by default) to not import sidecar JPGs and use them only for preview. [mentioned in Podcast]
    * Implement auto-stacking for files with the same name. [mentioned in Podcast]
    * Even better, allow for auto-stacking with similar names (using a suffix, like '-') and images that were shot at the same time. See also http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc34b40/1
    * Implement a command to sort the images in all stacks in the current view. This could be used to place all RAWs or JPGs on top.
    * Implement a synchronization feature that synchronizes (selected) keywords and collections across stacks. [deals with mentioned keyword problem]
    * As an alternative to all stack-based options above, simply implement a viewing filter to only show files of a certain type within the currently selected category. This way, people can easily remove all JPGs from view.
    Cheers,
    Simon

  • Problem inporting raw files from my Nikon D3200

i have problems importing raw files from my Nikon D3200, i have tried some of the suggestions such as
removing the RawCamera.bundle and RawCameraSupport.bundle from the System Library and downloading a newer version (OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support)
The problem is  --  the latest RAW Compatibility Update version for Yosemite 6.02 appears to be the one I currently am using (in my System Folder).
In that same article referenced above, my Nikon D800 is listed in an earlier version simply titled "Supported by Yosemite 10.10".
This had some success but is not working after trying it several times, i am currently on version  OSX Yosemite 10.10.1 and the version of iphoto is 9.6
any help would be greatly received as i only shoot in Raw

Remove the RawCamera.bundle and RawCameraSupport.bundle again and update the system to 10.10.2 via the App Store.  That contains the bundles that will support that camera: OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support.  The 6.01 and 6.02 updates are not needed for that camera. Be sure to repair disk permissions after the update.
As usual be sure you have a backup of your hard drive before applying any such update.
