Problem dragging library items

I have inherited a document that was started by someone else which also came with a library file. I can open it up but when I try to drag items to the artwork it just beeps at me!
I think the originator was on CS4 PC and I am on CS3 Mac - is that the problem? Is there a way around it?
I have a folder with the original files in for the graphics which are in the library but perhaps the link has been lost? It won't even let me drag tables or text that were created in ID.
Thanks

Windows vs Mac shouldn´t be a problem... CS3 vs CS4 might well be a problem. I think you cannot use CS4 library in CS3, vice versa should be fine.

  • InDesign CS4 Library- can't get library items on to pages

    I'm fairly new to InDesign CS4.
    A book I'm reading has a tutorial telling me to drag library items from the library to a page.
    This is a library that the book author created that came with the book.
    However, I can't get material from the library to any of the pages.
    Anytime I try dragging any of the images or other items from the library to my page in InDesign CS4, I get a small "No" symbol (a circle with a slash through it).
    So I clicked on the image in the library that I wanted to add to the page, and using both the content menu (and later, the library panel's menu) to select "Place Item," nothing happened.
    How do I get content in a library on to a page?
    Dragging and using "Place Item" are not working for me.

    Hello, Lee Sarah, and thanks for answering.
    If I understand you correctly, this is what I did:
    I "right" clicked on the Library file icon on my hard drive, called "Healthy Pets CS4."
    This brought up a context menu.
    From there, I went to "Properties."
    Under "Properties" > "Attributes," "Read only" is not checked off, nor is "hidden" checked off.
    In the "Healthy Pets CS4 Properties" dialog box, I then clicked on the the "Security" tab, which brought up all sorts of stuff about permissions, read /write,  etc.
    I guess I should mention at this point that I'm on a computer running Windows Vista, since this might be pertinent to my issue (?)
    Although it's my computer, it has me on here as two different people (I'm on as Administrator and under my first name, which let's just say is "Graphics Cuddly Bear.")
    On the "Security" tab page of the dialog box is a heading called "Group or user names," and from there, depending on which name you pick from the user names, different options get high lighted in the ""Permissions for Authenticated Users" box below it.
    So, under "Permissions for Authenticated Users" (when the users "Autheticated Users" and "Admins" are selected) the following are checked off with a check mark,
    (as if to say, "These are the things you have permissions to do with this file"):
    Modify
    Read and Execute
    Read
    Write
    The only things I do not have permissions for when I check off  "Administrator" on that list is "Special Permissions."
    When AU (Autheticated Users) is checked it says I do not have "Full Control" or "Special Permissions."
    However, when I clicked on my name (GCB - "Graphics Cuddly Bear") under the heading of "Group of user names," these two things are the only ones checked off:
    Read and Execute
    Read
    So I went in to another area of this box and gave my account ("GCB") the "Write" ability.
    When I went back to the box, a check mark next to "Write" then appeared. So it appears to be telling me that under GCB, I can now write to that file.
    So when I opened and closed out of InDesign and re-opened it, it still will not allow me to drag the files/text/images from the library.
    I still get the little "No" symbol.
    It also still will not let me use the "place" command, either.
    I've gone ahead and worked thorugh this chapter without being able to use the author's library items, but it makes working on her tutorials very difficult.
    And it's rather pointless, since the entire chapter is about how to use the software's library.
    I got a response from the book's publisher (Delmar / Cengage) to ask them for help, if they would provide me with working copies of the files, or some other work around, and they were NOT the least bit helpful.
    A representative from Delmar/ Cengage e-mailed me to say that because I purchased the book at Amazon's site (rather than from them directly) that they would not help me, which I thought was cruddy and not classy.
    I don't see that it entirely matters where I bought the book from; they're the ones who made it.

  • I can not drag graphic items into or out of the Creative Cloud library in Illustrator CC 2014

    I've recently upgraded to the new 2014.1.0 release that includes linked Creative Cloud Libraries. However, it appears that my version of Illustrator is not allowing me to drag graphic items into or out of the library panel. I can use the menu prompts and panel buttons to add items to my library or document, however the drag feature is not working. You can see the issue in the screencast below. If anyone else is having this problem and has figured out a solution, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's worth noting that the panel works as advertised in other applications within Creative Suite CC. Thank you.

    Hello and thanks for your response!
    I'm running OS X 10.9.5. I've tried restarting the machine and clearing preferences, yet the problem remains. I may try to reinstall the program to see if that corrects the issue.

  • I am getting a "Internal error occurred" message when I try to drag and drop common library items on to my canvas.

    Hi,
    I am getting a "Internal error occurred" message when I try to drag and drop common library items on to my canvas.
    I have noticed that there are a number of these error messages and tried one solution of renaming a couple of files, I tried this and no joy.
    Has any one go a solution for this before I purchase Fireworks please?
    Kind regards,
    Dave G

    I can no longer get Firework CS6 to run - The program loads but without any toolbars/properties etc.  It just has an 'AN INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED' message that cannot be dismissed.  The only way to close the program is via Task Manager (this is on a Window 8 PC).  I have uninstalled the program, rebooted the PC and re-installed (several times) but it has not resolved the problem.
    Fireworks is part of my Creative Cloud subscription and when reporting this via the live chat I was given the telephone number for Seagate Drives ??
    Anybody got a solution?
    Or, does anybody know how to open native Fireworks CS6 png files in Photoshop *but* with all the Fireworks layers preserved.
    Think I'll also post this as a new topic as the problem is slightly different to SirBasher's issue.

  • Spry widget menu bar as a library item - problems

    I created a spry vertical menu bar and made it a library item.  The original works great, however when I insert the library item into its own div tag on another page, the submenus will not pop out, either in DW or the browser view. I understand about having the script and  link element that connect my page to the dependent files in the SpryAssets folder in the header and the JavaScript function cal at the bottom on each page. I don't know what else to do - HELP!

    Welcome to the Dreamweaver world!
    Well, having your index.html page at the top/root level is important, as that is the default page by which people will enter your site.
    Having other pages in folders is fine...I do it all the time in order to keep departments or categories of information sorted.
    One characteristic of having pages in folders is that the hierarchy of files in folders (perforce) puts them at different depths in the site.
    This is not inherently a bad thing! Just one to remain aware of. When you look at your site files in the Files Panel, you can see a graphical representation of those different levels.
    But the nature of a library item is that it is identical in all its instances, which is what makes it useful...change it in the library, and it changes site-wide. The down-side of that identity is that when your files are at different depths in the hierarchy, their links back to, say, home (or any other same file) will change depending on the depth. You can see this if you make a link on a page, then drag the page (in the Files Panel) to a different depth...say, into a folder when it started at root level, or vice versa. Check the link, and you will see that it automatically adapted to the new path.
    Library items do not do that; they do not change, so some of your links will be 'wrong' when you refer to pages that have different paths than the ones originally set up in the library item... because of the change in hierarchy.
    All this is, of course, reliant on your creation of the site in the first place, as defining the root folder's location on your computer gives Dreamweaver a starting point for handling (juggling?) all the location-information for your site's files.

  • Cannot drag and drop library items to master page

    I'm using Windows 8 and just downloaded Muse. In following along the tutorial (https://helpx.adobe.com/use/how-to/create-website.html) the instructor has us download some graphics. One is a library item, which opens fine in the panel, but I cannot complete the action the instructor does, which is to grab the color swatches from the library panel and place them on the main template. Any ideas?
    TIA

    I called Adobe support and it turns out that my desktop computer is 32 bit. When I tried it later on my newer laptap which is 64 bit, I can follow along on with the video without any problem. The 'updated' version on my desktop is a slighter different version than the one for my laptop. Don't know if that helps anyone else.

  • Problem opening correct Fireworks program to edit Library item

    I am working on a PC with the CS3 Suite -- Dreamweaver,
    Fireworks, Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, and Bridge. I used MX2004
    before upgrading.
    I have a Library Item I want to edit that was created in
    Fireworks CS3. It is a "Fireworks HTML" rollover menu.
    I open the Library item in DW CS3 and then go to the
    "Properties" window and push the "Edit" button, which should open
    the Library file in Fireworks CS3.
    Instead, I get a message that DW CS3 is unable to launch
    "Macromedia\Fireworks MX 2004\Fireworks.exe"
    I have gone to "Edit" and then "Preferences" and ensured that
    the File Types/ Editors for .png, .gif, and .jpg. jpe. jpeg is set
    to "Adobe Fireworks CS3\Fireworks.exe"
    Does anyone out there know what else I can do to correct this
    problem?

    Do you still have Fireworks MX2004 on your system? If so, I
    would remove it. If you are using Windows, you may need to edit the
    Registry to remove entries for Fireworks MX2004. Also make certain
    that all references to FW MX2004 are removed from Dreamweaver CS3's
    preference window in the File Types/Editors tab.

  • Problem with accessing external swf library items

    Hi,
    I have a really annoying problem when I try to access the library items of an external .swf file. It is something I have done many times before using the ApplicationDomain.currentDomain.getDefinition() method. In this particular exmple, however, I am trying to load a .swf file from a full web address rather than locally.
    I can load in the .swf and try to set the application domain like the following
    * Please note that I amu using bulkLoader
    var domain:ApplicationDomain = new ApplicationDomain(ApplicationDomain.currentDomain)
    var lc:LoaderContext = new LoaderContext(false, domain);
    var path:String =  WorldManager.SITE_ROOT + swfPath;
    l.add(path, { id:"Kit", context:lc } );
    l.start();
    The file loads successfully but when I try to access the .swf library assets using the following it cannot access it
    domain.getDefinition("Shirt_B04");
    If I load the file with a relative path it works.....
    Does anyone have any ideas how I can solve this?

  • Multiple Body tags error when using library items

    Hi all,
    I have a navbar that I created in FW and exported as a DW
    library item. When I drag and drop the library item (navbar) into a
    site page, I get an error every time I try to save that page. The
    error states that the body tag was in the wrong place and has been
    moved to the right place. The problem is never fixed though and I
    keep being spammed by the error dialog.
    In reviewing the code, it appears that the library item has
    its own body and preload. So adding the library item to the page
    causes a duplication of the body tags and preload images code.
    Any thoughts as to how I can fix this or avoid it would be
    greatly appreciated.

    You are right, no <htm> <body> or css styles go
    into a library item.

  • Can't get imported library items to appear on stage

    Hello,
    I am new here and I am trying to get my imported library images to appear on the stage. I am using the CS4 version and when I click on the library item and drag it to the stage, there is nothing there. It is just a blank canvas and it's like the image(s) are hidden behind the stage or something. When I do a Publish Preview, I can see the .swf file with all the images, but in the .fla, there is nothing showing but the text files, and then that is even hidden in a newly created file. I am not sure if I accidently turned something on/off that is preventing my images from not showing on the stage or what. I really need to find a solution to this problem because I need to create a Flash file for a project I am working on in one of my classes. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I have done Google searches and Forum searches to no avail unless I'm not using the right keywords in my search. I have downloaded every available update that is out there for Adobe and it didn't fix my issue. Thanks in advance.

    No, this didn't work. When I went and viewed the same files on another computer, the .fla shows everything. I just may have to work on that computer for now until I can figure out why my images aren't showing up on this one. I'll compare the settings on both and and may just have to uninstall and reinstall the software to get it to work. Thanks!

  • Sort library items on name only ?

    Hi all,
    Probably I am overlooking something. I would like to sort library items (in particular photos from iPhoto) in date sequence, but the only column displayed is the image name and only that column can be sorted. Problem is, that Motion 5 "automatically" sorts the photo's alphabetically if one of the two icons on the bottom right (list or thumbnail display) is clicked. Once sorted alphabetically, there seems to be no way to re-sort the photo's as they were: date sequence. The only way I have found to do this is
    Go to thumbnail display mode
    Quit Motion
    Start Motion
    Don't touch the list/thumbnail icons anymore
    This is very annoying, because other elements from the library, such as behaviours, are easier shown in list format.
    As said, there must be a way to sort photos in date sequence, but I ccannot find how.
    Any help is welcome. Thanks

    Ok... well... it's actually "in there" but not like you think, and not really very intuitive.
    Go to the "Project Pane" (layers list, etc...) and at the top of the column, select the Media tab.
    Go to your photos library and select the "theme" (subgroup) your images are in. Thumbnails or list view, doesn't matter — select the pane the images are in and type Command - A (select all).
    Drag ALL the photos into the Media pane (they are NOT added to the layers list.)
    Right click on any of the column headers (Preview or Name is good) and from the dropdown, select Sort By > File Created (or Modified).
    Select the image you need and drag it onto the canvas (it will be added to the layers list.)
    I will grant you it's a little strange... Also, BE CAREFUL!!!! Whatever you do, you DO NOT want Motion to Save Unused Media with the project!!!! Make sure that option is unchecked. Or, command or shift select all unused images in the Media tab and delete them before saving.

  • Cannot create new folders on desktop. Cannot drag new items onto desktop. Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal. Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas. Thank you.

    I can no longer create new folders on my desktop. The option to do that is now light gray on the drop down menu and can't be selected.
    I cannot drag new items onto desktop any longer either.
    The Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal.
    Folders and items on Desktop open and work normally.
    Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas.
    Thank you.

    Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
    Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or rebooting. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
    Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
    If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
    If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”). Quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.
    If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
    Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

  • Again Library Item

    Hi All,
    I have coding to place Library Item into the Page Layout, my Script placing the library Item into that parent Page,
    But my Problem is I can not place XMLElement Into that Library Element Box.
    Here is my Script:
    myDoc.select(myElement);
                var mySideBarXML = app.selection[0];
                try  {
                                    myAsset = myCurrentLib.assets.item("Box");   // Name of the library item is "bx1"
                    myLibraryItem = myAsset.placeAsset(myElement.insertionPoints[-1]);
      catch (err)   {
                    alert ("There is no library element with the name Box");
                    exit();
                // TO PLACE TEXT IN LIBRARY ITEM
              try {
                    myLibraryItem[0].textFrames[0].placeXML(mySideBarXML);   // if the library element is group of frames.
                catch (ee)  {
                    try {
                        myLibraryItem[0].placeXML(mySideBarXML);   // if the library element is a single frame.
                    catch (ee) { }
    can any one help on this.
    Regards
    Hurix

    Hi hurix,
    Are you try the above requirement in manually, You can't do even manually, because you already placed the library item into the XML text in between, again you drag the you respective box element xml text into the box, definitely its shown the error in InDesign like this...("Elements cannot be placed into an inline").
    Now, what you have to do it for your requirement to meet. First you placed the library item into the respective page, then placed the box xml element content into the library item text frame.
    try{
        var mySideBarXML = myElement;
        var myLibraryItem = app.libraries[0].assets.item("Box").placeAsset(myDoc)[0];// here you give the page, i.e., you selection element text parent page;
        myLibraryItem.move(mySideBarXML.xmlContent.parentTextFrames[0].parentPage);
         try {
             myLibraryItem.textFrames[0].placeXML(myElement);   // if the library element is group of text frame.
         catch (ee) {
             myLibraryItem.placeXML(myElement);// single text frame no group.
    thx,
    csm_phil,
