Problem driving dual external displays on wakeup

I posted the following here back in February and it was archived without resolution (one other subscriber noted having this problem too). Still having this difficulty so I'm reposting ...
I am having occasional irregularities with my Mac re-driving a dual-display setup either waking from sleep or after a normal energy-saving screen shutdown.
The setup: a new MacBook Pro 15" with Snow Leopard. Normally I work with the cover closed using two Acer external monitors, both connected via DVI. The main monitor (H - arranged horizontally) is connected via the Apple mini-to-DVI adapter. The secondary monitor (V - arranged vertically) is connected via an Iogear USB 2.0 External DVI Video Card, attached to the machine via a Belkin USB hub.
The problem: sometimes when I wake the machine, or come back to it after the monitors have been powered down, the H screen will present nothing but snow - a complete black-and-white pixelation effect. Sometimes this will stop and the login prompt appears and all is normal. More often I have to wait for the monitors to power down again, then try to wake them. Sometimes this clears it, other times not. In the worst case I can not get the monitors redriven and have to open the machine and effect a restart.
I have also noticed at times that the Mac seems to forget about one or the other monitor, driving just one and moving all the windows over to it. Again, have to restart to bring everything back in line.
Sometimes I can go weeks without this occurring, and other times it will happen nearly every time.
The Mac OSX software is up to date and as far as I can tell I have the latest Iogear driver (although it's not the Iogear-attached monitor that pixelates).
Any thoughts on what might be wrong, or what steps I can take to diagnose the problem?

This question was never really answered but I reposted it since it was moved to archive.

My mid-2012 MBA does not see external displays on wakeup. VERY annoying
I have a BenQ 24" HD display connected by HDMI and it is not seen by the Air on wakeup. I have to open the laptop, pull the mini-DV plug out 3 or 4 times before the display is recognised - some of the time. Most of the time requires a reboot with multiple cable/plug inserts.
What an absolute POS this mid-2012 MBA is! Apple finally fixed the garbage colours on external displays in 10.8.4 but the issue of recognisisng external displays remains. Its a crock. Totally regret buyiing this POS.
Have reset PRAM, SMS, cleared prefs etc etc ad nauseum. No solution with any of them. After almost a year of this garbage, the laptop is close to being thrown out as e-waste.

  • Thunderbolt problem connected to external display

2011 mbp 2.3ghz 15" while connected to a external display the screen goes wacko. When i disconnect the external display it works fine but i do computer aided engineering and cad and need a bigger screen so this is annoying. It's connected to a 23" lg led display via mini displayport/dvi adapter.
It happens while in Windows7 bootcamp and in lion 10.7
I tried to install the thunderbolt firmware update but it says it doesn't need it.
    Is this a common problem?

  • How To Run Dual External Displays

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro 13". I am wondering if it is possible to run dual external monitors? I have the MiniDisplayPort To DVI adapter, works great with one monitor, but can I run dual? Thanks.

You could try plugging in this USB adapter, it says you can plug in up to six per computer. If you want two externals, you should only need one of those USB adapters because the first monitor should be plugged into your superior onboard DisplayPort.
Just bear in mind that when you use these USB adapters, the top resolution supported will be lower than the DisplayPort and also it will be a lot slower. Playing games or editing video/animation might not work well on the adapters as cheap as you want.

  • Dual External Displays?

Is there anyway to get dual external LCD's working with the macbook? If so please let me know, thanks.

    Sort of
Not really but here is a device that will simulate that

  • Dual external displays but different resolutions--why?

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina. I have two identical HP Pavilion 22bw monitors attached via the display ports. One has satisfactory resolution, one does not. They display the same settings. I do not understand why one looks so different.

    Hi joegage,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with one of your external displays. If they are identical monitors with identical settings, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful in isolating the issue:

  • Latest firmware update and more problems with 30" external displays?

    Hello,
New macbook pro user since a few weeks, so first post here.
I'm aware of various issues with the displayport to dual-dvi adapter, especially with 30" 2560x1600 monitors. All threads I've found on are 1-3 years old though.
I got my 17" macbook pro a few weeks ago and I've had very few problems running my 30" dell 3008wfp as external screen. I had issues at times getting it to work after boot up, with blackout and various errors (problems I've read about in older threads), but once stable it would work without issues for days.
Yesterday the macbook found and installed a new firmware update, and wow, all **** broke lose. The external screen won't run at 2650x1600 for more than a minute before blacking out or suffering major graphical errors. Ironically one of the key points in the firmware update is better support for external monitors...
It will run nice and stable mirrored at 1920x1200, but not at 2650x1600.
Is anyone else in a similar situation after the latest update?

  • Problem connecting an external display or projector to Retina Macbook Pro

I have a problem with my rMBP (MAC OS:10.8.2) and i'm not sure if it is just an easy fix or if there is a serious hardware issue.
I connect my rMBP to an external projector Hitachi CPX3011 (max resolution 1600x1200) very often for my presentation.
I use a Thunderbolt port to mini display port to VGA adapter to connect my laptop to this projector.
When I plug it into my projector the screen on my rMBP goes black and nothing shows up on the projector.
I try both of the Thunderbolt port, the rMBP switches resolutions and goes back
I called Apple, but the guy just told me to they never encounter this before, (case number 368401545).
Is there something that I am missing here???
Or do you guys think that my Thunderbolt port could be faulty.
By the way, just to be a little more descriptive. When I connect my projector to my rMBP on the port that doesn't work, my screen immediately turns black. I can still see my mouse pointer, but its incredibly HUGE. About the size of a dime.
Please help if you can. I really appreciate it. Check out the video for this problem.

I had the similar problem but it was specific to running windows 7 through bootcamp.  The only way i was able to get the laptop to work with a projector was by purchasing a USB 3 to Vga dongle (essentially an external graphics card)

  • Driving an External Display

I want to drive my external 1920 x 1080 display, am I stuck to driving it only by the preset resolutions provided in System Preferences, or can I 'create' a custom '1920 x 1080' resolution (much like in Keynote)?
    Thanks.

You can only use resolutions that are supported by the hardware so you cannot create a "custom" resolution of your own choice.

  • 2012 iMac 21.5 inch - dual external displays?

I bought myself a new 24" Asus 1920x1080 monitor for Christmas.  I did this in anticipation of buying a new Mac Mini when they were released this year.  Unfortunately I can't wait any longer for the Mac Mini.  I have a video editing job that I must start right away.  So I've decided to spend the extra money and buy a new 21.5 inch 2.7GHz iMac.  Here is my problem.  It is 2 inches too tall for the useful side of my desk.  It is also smaller than my Asus monitor.  So I really want to be able to use the Asus as my main workspace, and my 47" Samsung HDTV as the video display.  I know the iMac will only support 2 displays.  My question is, will it support 2 displays not including the built-in monitor.  I would like to buy 2 Thunderbolt to HDMI connectors and leave the iMac monitor black.  Will the iMac do that?  Also, the literature says it will only support a 30 inch external monitor.  I'm assuming that it won't care as long as the resolution is only 1920x1080, but is that a correct assumption?  I don't know what to do anymore.  I already have a MBP and I can't afford to spring for a second.  Ideally I'd love to wait for the new Mac Mini, but it's starting to look like it may not come out until the next generation of Intel chips are released, maybe not even this year.  I've already been waiting since last October.  If I can't turn the iMac monitor off, I may have to buy a new desk with more clearance.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also, just to make sure, FCP 7 will run on this iMac right?  I'm sure it will, but I can't wrap my head around FCPX and I want to avoid any nasty surprises.  Thanks.

I don't know which softwares you will use for video editing, but if I were you, I would buy the iMac 27" models instead of 21.5". It is because for 27" model, you can add RAM easily at the back of iMac. Therefore, you won't afraid for having not enough RAM. However, for 21.5" model, you cannot add RAM by yourself unless you are brave enough to remove the screen, which may damage other part of iMac.
If you have budget constraint, I will recommend you to choose the sixth choice. It is because video-editing depends on CPU, RAM and Display Card mainly, especially RAM, which I strongly suggest you to have at least 16 GB. For the CPU, the 3.1 GHz Qual Core i7 performs better than with i5-processor significantly. The i7 CPU has a technology which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core, so a qual-core iMac has eight virtual cores.

  • Problem with HDMI - external display resolution (MacBook andSamsung HDTV)

I just bought a new MacBook, and I have used my Samsung HDTV (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN-S2338W-widescreen-720p-HDTV/dp/B000G6300U) with my old MacBook for over a year. First I tried to connect the two using the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter, which wasn't recognized by the Samsung. Now i tried using the Mini Display Port-->DVI-->HDMI route. The problem I have is that, while all the resolutions show up as able to be used in the display preferences (all the way up to 1920 x 1080), when I click on any resolution for the Samsung that is over 1280x960, all windows and dialogue boxes displayed on the samsung screen are jumpy, shaky and hazy. Is there anything I can do to allow me to use my preferred resolution of 1600x900?

I'm no expert on this, but seeing as your TV has an actual resolution of 1280x720 (according to the link), I can't see how you'd get good results from anything higher than that.

  • EliteBook 8470p Dual External Display Max Resolution

I am currently using a docked HP Elitebook with two external monitors at (1920x1200) with no issues.  I wanted upgrade to two 4k external monitors (3840x2160). Does anyone know if the Elitebook can handle this?

Either DVI or DisplayPort will drive that resolution, though you may need to use a dual-link DVI adapter.
DisplayPort is a newer technology and offers the same resolution support as DVI.

  • Driving 24" external display with 20" imac

I'm looking at imacs now to use with Logic Pro and I'm going to buy a second display to expand my screen. I'm thinking of the ACD 23" or the BenQ 24" but I'm wondering if I'll run into problems trying to drive a monitor bigger than the built-in 20" display.

    Hello,
You'll be fine using it with a 24-inch screen. The built-in monitor does not determine the maximum size that the video card can drive. It's just the monitor chosen for that computer.
    I hope this helps.

  • MBP i7 and Dual External Displays

is it possible to run 2 external 1200x1600 dvi(digital) displays from a MacBook Pro 15" i7?

The cheapest way to do this is probably to use the mini-display port for one monitor , and a USB or firewire based video out card for the other.
It may produce some latency issues , but if you need a cheap fix it might do the job for you.

  • [X300 intel external display] Problem to display correctly 1600x1200px on external screen

    Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my external display on my X300 laptop...
    I have a X300 with WinXP, and a 20" 4/3 1600x1200 external display (Samsung 204B).
When I want to use my external display as an extended desktop, it didn't work well... First I configure my display as an extended ... into 1600x1200px resolution. As the ratio isn't 4/3 on the laptop, there is some border at the top and at the bottom of the external screen, consequenly there is an "lift" (when I go down the screen move down.. etc.). It's not very ..cool.
So there is an option into the graphic proprety to set the screen in "full screen : not keeping the proportions". But, in this case, my external screen display an ... triky ? There is still an "lift", but there is also two border on the right and the left of the screen, and the image quality isn't there. It's too deformed to can be read.
After some research it appear that my lenovo drivers do not match with the last intel one... But when I try to install the lenovo one ... It didn't work ! (hardware problem).
How can I get a working extended desktop into 1440x900 + 1600x1200 full screen !
Thanks for all, and sorry for my poor English...

i have the same problem with X200 and the X200 ultrabay Docking station.
    No idea yet ...
