Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D
The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it - when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

I have iphone 4s with iO6. My problem is I can no longer update my apps since "cannot connect to itunes store" always shows on my screen when i try to. Tried fixing by changing the dates, turning off location as suggested in some forums but both didn't work! Please help!! Thanks.
You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them. -
I have a base installation of the IBM T60.. I made no modifications to the setup or configuration of how the HDD is structured nor have I downloaded and installed any strange drivers... only automatically downloaded drivers from Microsoft update and manually downloaded driver updates from the Lenovo website.
One day everything was working fine. Next day, my USB devices, reserved partition (can't remember what this is called) and the DVD-RAM drive stopped working but power was still getting to these devices.
My DVD-RAM drive is seen as a DVD-RAM on first bootup. When I insert a CD or DVD media in the drive, the Explorer tree changes DVD-RAM to CD-ROM in the Explorer (really strange). It behaves like there is no media in the drive. Cannot boot with that drive either.
In addition, I have external USB HDD and Flash drives as well. None of them work on this T60 anymore.
When I plug in an external USB HDD or Flash drive, I get "not formatted" error message and a prompt to format my drives?!
I tested these USB external drives on a desktop machine and verified that they are working 100% fine. So the problem has something to do with my IBM/Lenovo T60.
It almost seems like something broke on the motherboard perhaps? I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates as well to no avail. Please help. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this issue.

DVD RAM: Does Leopard 10.5 read and write it?
Does 10.5 read / write DVD RAM? (Of course, via a third party drive.) This is more than relevant today, when good burners at the TV, such as to capture TiVo recordings, will burn to DVD RAM. And DVD RAM is a marvelously flexible tool that behaves much like a hard drive.
Or do we still have to pay for Software Architects software (thank goodness for them ...), to use DVD RAM?
Thanks in advance for your good help. (Have previously searched, without finding any prior discussion here.) --David AllenHello,
If you leave your Mac on 24/7, it will run the maintenance tasks, but you have the option of either using a disk utility like Macaroni, or you can force background maintenance yourself.
Mac OS X: How to force background maintenance tasks (logs and temporary items)
As far as authoritative answers, you can try here;
http://lowendmac.com/misc/08mr/mb0910.html
And here: http://www.macworld.com/article/133730/2008/06/maintenance_routines.html
Just use common sense. Check the boot disk for errors using your restore disk and Disk Utility. Repair Permissions BEFORE and AFTER all software updates.
Watch your available disk space: Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
Insufficient available space can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
If don't want to purchase Macaroni, Leopard Cache Cleaner is free and available here;
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/leopardcachecleaner.html

Against my better judgement, I installed update 7.1.2 on my iphone5, and can no longer access the intenet. I've dis some searching for a solution, but nothing works. What has this happened? And how can I fix it?
LTE indicates cellular. Tap Settings > Cellular then switch Cellular Data ON.
If your Wi-Fi is working, then you should be able to access the internet.
Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
You will have to re enter your Wi-Fi password.
* No data is lost due to a reset
If nothing above has helped, try here > iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections -
Dvds can no longer be read on MacPro
DVD drive used to play Movie DVDs fine but recently stopped - on inserting a DVD now, machine clicks for a while then ejects the DVD.
Inserting a CD (music) or data is fine - disc is accepted and available for access.
Any ideas why just the DVD rejected?Hey Grant,

Mat****a DVD-Ram UJ-841s unable to read CD-R`s
Hi,
I purchased my Notebook about 8 weeks ago but I am unable to view any pictures on any discs that I have inserted in my laptop.
When I insert a cd-r in the drive the laptop recognises there is a disc in the drive but when I open the D drive there is now images inside.
I know it is nothing to do with the picture package because one of the cd-r`s was made using the same package as the one I have on my laptop.
Also I am able to watch DVD`s and listen to music cd`s.
I would love to hear any advice on offer as how I can fix this strange problem.
Cheers,
Dave.Hi Dave
Sorry but I am a little bit confused with your posting. You wrote you can watch DVDs and listening audio CD. I presume your drive works fine. Please be sure that all pictures are saved on CD as data. I dont know what you mean with picture package but if the CD is created as data disc there should not be any problems. -
My Iomega external HDD can no longer be read by my Macbook Pro *Please Help*
The day before my problem began my external was working fine then the next day I plugged it into my mac and now it can't be read. I get a message that says it can't be read with the options to eject, ignore, and initialize. When I click initialize it sends me to disk utility where I see the HDD but it doesn't say Iomega like it usually does instead it says External Raid Media. To make things worse it says it's not partitioned. I can't even verify or repair disk because the options are greyed out. I tried restarting, opening it up to see if it was a physical problem. I don't know what to do any assistance will be appreciated.
Do a reset.. power off the TC..
Hold in reset and power on.. keep holding in reset until it flashes rapidly.. if it turns on at all.
If you bought it in June.. take it back today.. it is broken.. at a guess.
Some Gen4 are failing this way.. get Apple to replace it.. even if it is a few days out of warranty it won't be much. -
The display becomes blocky, and can no longer be read
Websites develop distortion in both text and pictures, thought it is more noticeable in text. Horizontal lines shift from left to right a pixel or two, sometimes more when it's really bad. i've seen some shift entire letters. this makes it very difficult to read, especially since it more spreads the text than shifts it cleanly. if i highlight the text, it disappears. if i start a new page, it disappears. it seems to inconsistently get worse the more activity there is on the page, or if i scroll up or down. No other program on my computer has this problem, and i checked today that all my drivers are up to date. i also checked for viruses on the computer and in mozilla. i have gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall the program without the problem going away. i have also seen a similar issue in your foums, but have not seen a solution given to that post from 2010.

My Ipod disk can no longer be read
I have a 2nd gen click wheel Ipod. When I bought it, it came with Music Match software and I used it with Windows for years no prob. Now Music Match has become Yahoo Juke Box. Today I used Yahoo to load some of my cds and copy to my Ipod. After 11 tracks of copy, Yahoo Juke Box froze, my Ipod lost its 'do not disconnect message' and I had no choice to reboot. Now when I browse my Ipod itself, it functions, but appears to hold no music. When I browse it via Yahoo juke box, I can see MB used/free info but no track listing. How can I make my Ipod readable again? Any ideas anyone?
ThanksHi jstutsman,

I'm using OS 10.4.11. I have some old DVD-RAM discs with old files on them that I would like to open on my G4 iBook laptop. I also purchased an external DVD-RAM drive that plugs into the USB port on my laptop. It used to read old discs just fine about a year ago, but now when I try I get a message that says the disc I have inserted is "unreadable." Also, I no longer get the icon of the external disc drive that used to appear on my desktop.
I suspect that I've upgraded my system software to the point that this old DVD-RAM stuff no longer works. Does anyone know a way I can access these old discs on my present system?
Thanks for any ideas.

I have a Color Nook. Recently it was updated automatically. Since the update I can no longer enjoy reading the library books I once could. I used Overdrive and Adobe Digital Editions to access my county library in the past but can no longer access it.. I get an error message of E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY. Apparently I have lost authorization to the AdobeID server.
