Problem editing .mts files

When I try to edit my .mts video files in Premiere Elements 12, I feel like the hd quality of the videos is lost. Sound is great and the image doesn't lag, but it still looks quite fuzzy. Will I recover the quality when I finish my movie?

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on?
Then the other usual questions, to get them out of the way,
a. do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 12?
b. are you running the program as Run As Administrator or from a User Account with Administrative Privileges?
c. do you have the latest video card driver version according to the manufacturer of that video card.
Then we get to the project itself and its setup, importing of media, and export.
a. What are the properties of your source media...video and audio compressions, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive frame rate, duration, etc to go along with your .mts file extension?
b. What are you or the program setting for the project preset so that the project preset matches the properties of the source media?
c. What is your export choice and how are you viewing the export?
a. Share/......., preset, and export settings under the Advanced Button/Video Tab?
Is your computer optimized? Do you multitask while editing and exporting a Premiere Elements project? What does the rendered Timeline look like in the Edit Mode monitor before you export your video?
Let us start here and then decide what next.

You need to consider what the exported file is intended for, so you can determine a suitable format and preset for the export.

I have tried several times do edit MTS files in Final cut pro 6, but it does not recognise the files.
After that I tried do converte the files to AVI or MPEG-4 and still the finla cut stop, just watching the clip... Is it possible that the OX 10.4 does not suport this type of files to work on final cut pro 6??

Sure...yes, that makes it POSSIBLE to read the files natively in FCP...if they come from a Panasonic camera. BUT...just try working with those files. Right away the system won't be nearly as responsive as it would if they were ProRes. First...there are no sequence settings for that format...so you'll have to use ProRes and have a green render bar. BUT, that's no big deal. The big deal is trying to work with the AVCHD format, which is VERY processor intensive...inside an application that doesn't like to work with much outside of the FCP editing codecs.
Is it possible? Sure? Will it work well...will you be as zippy and error free as if you converted to ProRes? Not by a long shot. OH, but don't just take my word for it. Go ahead...try it and see. No skin off my nose...no waste of my time. See how well this works.
I'm just here to relate real world working solutions to issues. And yes, I did try that plugin, and boy, was editing a pain.

Problems importing mts files from Canon HF M30 to PrE 9

I am not new to premiere elements, but I am new to PrE 9. I am also new to AVCHD, having recently received a Canon HF M30 camcorder. Now, when I import my video (as .mts files), the playback in Premiere Elements 9 is very choppy. What am I doing wrong? Is there something I can do with my camera or with PrE to fix the problem? Or do I need to convert my video files to another format?
I realize this may have been asked before, so feel free to direct me to the appropriate discussion if the issue has already been addressed elsewhere. Thanks!

Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708?tstart=0 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for SD (Standard Definition) video editing

A USB3 hard drive connected to a motherboard with USB3 is supposed to be fast enough for video editing (I don't have such, so don't know) but eSata DOES have a fast enough data transfer for video editing... I have not used this eSata Dock... for reference only, YMMV and all the usual disclaimers

Premiere Pro CC 2014 hangs - Problems with MTS files?

Hello all,
So I've read the other MTS file posts on here about problems importing. I had this issue initially but moved the folder and it worked.
I got into my project and every now and then I would get this lagging, where Premiere Pro would still play, but the cursor would be frozen, and anything I click on wouldn't highlight... can't scroll etc. This seems to happen when the fan in my mac kicks up.
It has gotten to the point now where I can't edit the project at all because this happens about 3 minutes in each time. Works fine for a few, then fan kicks up and everything starts lagging and freezing. What's weird is I found a part on the screen, that if I click it, the screen updates to what I just did. SO WEIRD.
THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ON ANY OTHER PROJECT. And this project isn't even that big. So I highly doubt it's a computer performance issue as I've worked on RED RAW and Prores 4444 files on my macbook pro (which I'm on now) with no issues.
Long story short I've tried about everything, and feel the only solution is to transcode to prores and start all over with the edit (which would be brutal) but I've already completed so much work! Does anybody have experience with this or a work around?

I was given a drive with the RAW files on them. I originally just used finder and dragged and dropped into Premiere, since that's what I've always done... but since the issue I'll start using what you mentioned.
Did NOT update the project. Started it on CC 2014.
I tried importing the sequence into a different project and the same issue is occurring. But below I've given more info as to my problems. I'm really concerned I'm going to have to start it all over again. I recently transcoded all files to Prores 422 (hq) in case that's what I need to do. But I'm really hoping there's something I can do to resolve this. Though I have a feeling it's the .MTS files causing issues.
What version of Premiere Pro?

AVCHD... I went about "show package contents" until revealing the .MTS files.

Editing. Noticed in the beginning, but as the sequence as gotten longer the problem became more persistent, until now it's ALL THE TIME... and the computer fan kicks up right away like it's struggling with playback.
What other software are you running?
Shut down all other programs so Premiere is just running. Still happens. All other projects have been working fine but this is the first with .MTS.

No.

Everything. Screen lags and freezes with anything. It still plays back without interruption, but my cursor won't move, windows won't update, I can't scroll anywhere unless clicking the top part of Premiere (then it magically updates what I did a moment ago).

Can i edit MTS files with premiere elements 13

I have a new camcorder and I have a problem editing with premiere elements 7, does elements 13 offer a solution? I believe it is the type of file that is not compatible.

As for AVCHD.mts and AVCHD.mp4 in camera whose specifications offer the choice of AVCHD or .MP4.....both have been reported to use a form of AVCHD video compression with different wrapper formats (.mts and .mp4). Again, I did not post to go further into that. Please refer to the following link's post dated February 12, 2014 as one discussion of the matter.

I did not discover that AVCHD.mts does not play back the audio portion of an AVCHD.mts file when played back in the Elements Organizer 13 player. That has been the reality of Premiere Elements 13/Elements Organizer 13 users who found this out by themselves later than sooner. And, I confirm their results in those cases. There is no fix for this at the present time, and that is a user to user honest non marketing report. If this Elements Organizer issue is not an important concern for you, then this is a non issue for you.

Problems trimming MTS files?

An editor, who works with Final Cut Pro, made the following statement:
"I personally wouldn't edit an MTS file; although Premiere can handle it. It's not really an editing format, which is why it has problems when trimming. It's a smartly compressed capture format that is usually transferred into a different spec for editing."
My take is that it's a good thing P Pro handles MTS (AVCHD) files natively. It significantly speeds up the workflow. And I have not noticed any trimming issues. But this comment raises a red flag.
Does anyone care to weigh-in on this?

I have not noticed any issues with making frame-accurate trims. I just clicked through some AVCHD footage, one frame at a time, and each frame was a discrete image. Does P Pro compensate for interframe media? For example, does it interpolate frames?
Yes, of course--FCP does the same thing, only it's "baking" it into the L&T files using whatever I-frame codec you select, e.g. ProRes. AVCHD uses long GOP encoding, so you've got discrete frames only every so often, with bits and pieces of predicted frames in between. In a shot that doesn't change much, there aren't many differences to encode, so you can have "frames" that really don't consist of much video data. The MPEG decoder knows to look forward and backward from those predicted frames to the independently-coded frames, and uses those as references to build the frames in between. Premiere Pro is doing this on the fly--that's why you need a fairly brawny PC to play back AVCHD in full-resolution, and it's also why you might have noticed some pretty nasty break-up if you don't set your Program Monitor Playback Resolution to Full. When it's at Full, both the independent frames and the predicted frames are decoded and displayed; when it's anything less than Full, not only does Premiere Pro drop the resolution, but it also doesn't decode all the predicted frames. It takes much less horsepower, but it can be pretty jarring and nearly impossible to edit, at least from a visual standpoint.
You can step through frame-by-frame and see a whole, discrete image because Premiere Pro is doing the decoding for each of those previewed frames--that's a lot easier than doing it at full speed. From a timebase standpoint, it doesn't really matter if there is encoded video data there or not; it's a "frame" in the video sense, and you can edit on those frame demarcations. Now, since Premiere Pro doesn't do "smart encoding," it doesn't matter whether you edit on a GOP boundary or somewhere in between, all frames will be re-encoded on export. That's no big deal, though; with FCP, you're transcoding twice.

CS6 problems AVCHD MTS files

Forgive for bad English. I hope, the thought is clear. I got OEM Production Premium CS6 with MXO2 mini. I received a problem known for all... My problems when playing AVCHD MTS were solved by program converter installation, in fact, additional codecs. Now everything "flies"!

When attempting to play the .MTS files in import I'm getting the 'dropped frames' error message:
"Issues that may affect playback include available memory, disk speed, graphics performance, and processor performance.
You may be able to get better performance by doing the following:
- Use proxy playback by changing the Media setting to 'Proxy' in the Viewer Options pop-up menu. (Requires proxy media.)
- Optimize your source clip media."
Could the lack of RAM in this iMac actually cause the video to speed up in FCPX? (weird)

Problems editing static file

I've uploaded a static file and have encountered some problems when trying to edit it.
1. The help text for both "Mime type:" and "File:" says "Identifies file name." No big deal, but why have help text if it's incorrect?
2. HTML DB reports the size of my file to be 1677 and the information region on the edit page says that files up 30,000 bytes can be edited; however, instead of allowing me to edit the file, I get this error message: "This text file is too large to edit. To change the content, you must edit the file on your local machine and upload it again." Which statement am I to believe? I suspect the error message is an error since the MIME type of the file is application/x-javascript rather than the TEXT MIME type indicated in the information region.
3. If, in fact, the reason that I cannot edit the file is that it doesn't have a TEXT MIME type, can the list of editable MIME types be extended to include application/x-javascript?
4. The browser isn't necessarily going to get the MIME type right during the upload. There even seems to be some controversy about the correct type to use for javascript. Can the MIME type itself be made editable?

I have experienced the same problems. I've just had to learn to edit both CSS and Javascript files on my local machine and then re-upload them to HTMLDB. I am hoping in the next release of HTMLDB that this is resolved.
I've discussed some of these types of issues in a survey and have had some follow-up with that as well. That is why I hope this will be resolved in the next release.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is an immediate resolution or fix to the problems you are experiencing except to just deal with editing the files on your local machine and go through the arduous steps to reload it.

Problems importing .mts files to organizer

I just installed Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements 9. I imported all my pictures and itworked fine. However, the organizer immediately stopped working and closed after I imported my .mts video files. When I try to restart the organizer, it starts up and then immediately freezes and I get a "Elements 9 organizer has stopped working" message and then it shuts down again.
I tried dragging the .mts files directly into the organizer and if I only do one it works fine. However, I get the same error when I try adding a second .mts file the same way. I'm running Windows 7 with 9GB of RAM and an Intel i7 930 processor, so hardware shouldn't be a problem. The videos also run fine on other software, so I'm pretty sure they're not corrupted. I also tried uninstalling both programs and then reinstalling them, but I get the same error. Any ideas on what the problem is or a fix? Tech support couldn't help me and it will be very frustrating if I can't use the organizer for my videos.

I also have a Canon HF200 Camcorder that uses .mts files and just purchased Premiere Elements 8 two months ago. The .mts files will download to the organizer without problem, but both the downloader and the organizer show blank thumbnails. This makes it very difficult to know which clips you are looking at without previewing them first. I have tried converting to .m2ts files, as some suggested, but this does not work either.
I just read of the release of Premiere Elements 9, Has this problem been fixed in Premiere Elements 9?
I am using a new computer with an i7 920 @ 2.67GHz on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Problem editing .mov files in CS6

Hi Adobe folk,
I've uploaded .mov files from my Canon 7D camera onto Adobe Premiere CS6, but after doing some editing the footage in the playback screen is very jerky/slow. I'm working on a brand new iMac OSX and have a RAM of 4GB, so I have no idea why the playback would be so slow.
It's an urgent project that I'm working on, so any solutions would be much appreciated.

All .mov files aren't the same thing though. Quicktime/.mov files are just the "container" for the actual "codec" the codec is what determines basically everything other than the file extension itself anyways. Basically the type of .mov file you're attempting to edit is using the h.264 codec, which is a codec that puts a TON of strain on your CPU. Converting the files to ProRes would make playback better, but will produce huge files, and if you start stacking several layers of video on top of each other it will start to playback in a choppy manor, because you're not using a RAID array. In this case I don't think the RAM will help that much, although it should make your overall experince much better.
Although how many layers of video are you attempting to edit on the same track and what effects are you using? Because your system should be able to at least playback a single video clip inside Premiere without issue.
Although once you post what the resolution is I'll be able to recommend what codec to use, because for certain resolutions some codecs tend to become more efficient than others. But basically unless you have FCP on your machine you can't convert to ProRes, however if you don't have final cut no worries because you can use the Cineform codec which is just as good as ProRes. The cineform codec is also free now days which is great. But honestly I think that most likely you're going to need to transcode the footage to a ligher codec, basically you don't need to worry about files being too big because, even though it seems like a smaller file would be easier for your machine to handle it's actually quite the opposite unless you start hitting a HDD bottleneck. Which won't happen in most cases, (depending on resolution etc though or unelss the video is totally uncompressed HD).
Here is the basic reason why the less compressed a video clip is the easier you can edit the file without strain on the CPU. Video clips that use "GOP's" or Group of Pictures use
I - frames
B - frames
P - frames (With mpeg-1 there is also D-frames but it's not used anymore to my knowledge)
Anyways though when your CPU plays back a h.264 clip it has to decode the video which the longer the GOP is the harder your CPU has to work, and in general H.264 footage is almost always GOP because it's so heavily compressed. Unless it's I-frame only. Because basically the further the I-frames are from each other the harder your cpu must work to decode it. When dealing with footage that is much less compressed though you're CPU is basically free to process other stuff such as heavy CC or other effects.

Problem copying mts file

Hi there,
I am willing to save on my hard disk the content of a SD card that contains mts files that I can access via AVCHD,BDMV,STREAM.
When I copy the whole SD card to save on my hard disk, I get an error message saying that the copy cannot proceed because one of the file contains information that cannot be read.
I was told on this group, that changing the structure of the AVCHD folder should not be changed.
Can I delete the file that contains a bug ? or will I screw up the AVCHD folder ?

If I understand your post correctly, you are unable to make a copy of your SD card because the bad file halts the copy process?
Since you are unable to make a protection copy of the card before making changes, I would be reluctant to do any modifications as that might have more consequences and you don't have a back-up copy.
I would use ClipWrap to convert the files from the card to ProRes ClipWrap will do each file individually, so if one is corrupt it can be safely bypassed.
ClipWrap costs around US$50, they have a trial period that will transfer the first minute only of each file so you can test it out.

If you are able to make a protection copy of the card, then many cameras have a card structure restore feature (not formatting) called database restore or something like that in their menu. You might check your manual and see if you have that feature.

Problem editing hosts file in Snow Leopard

I am having trouble editing my hosts file in Snow Leopard. Well, I can edit it fine, but the changes seem to give no effect whatsoever.
My hosts file looks like so:

I cannot access localhost by entering '127.0.0.1' into my browser, nor can I access it by entering 'www.localhost.com'.
Firefox simply tells me either 'Unable to Connect' or 'The Connection was reset', respectively.
Is there something I am doing wrong?? I have been looking all over the internet all week and cannot see what I might be missing!
The only way I can connect to localhost is by visiting 'http://localhost:8888/'.
If it helps, I am running MAMP.

Never mind, I found out MAMP was using port 8888 instead of 80, so I reset it and now it works fine
