Problem emptying Mail Trash

I recently noticed that my Trash mailbox had over 8,000 messages in it, so I figured I'd delete some. I picked the least recent 6,000 or so, hit Cmd-Delete, and not much seemed to happen. I figured it was just taking a while, so I came back a while later...now I have 12,000 messages in my Trash! I've tried deleting smaller amounts--even just one message--but everytime, the number of items in my trash keeps getting bigger!
My trash is stored locally; I have the "store Trash on server" item unchecked for all of my e-mail accounts. Also, I ran "Verify Permissions" on my system drive just a couple of days ago, so it doesn't seem like it would be a permissions problem.
Anybody know how to fix this?
Thanks!

Yes, that seems to have done it. Very strange problem, however.
Thanks.

    a) Am having problems emptying my trash.

What must i do? My trash box is full and it's affecting my operating system?

    Abu,
There may be something going on with your ownership if the Trash if the files aren't deleting. OK, let's try this:
Launch Terminal (found in Applications>Utilities folder). At the $ prompt, type (or paste):
    ls -la
and hit Return. In the right hand column, you should see .Trash listed and to the left, you will see the "owners" name (in my case, clintondyches). If the owners name shows as root then the following will fix the problem. At the same $ prompt enter
    sudo chown yourusername .Trash
(replace yourusername with your actual user name - such as mine being clintondyches).
At the prompt $ again, type or paste:
    ls -la
If this was successful, you should see yourusername instead of root.
You should be in business now. You should have ownership of .Trash and be able to empty your Trash, drag items to it and empty it, etc.
Call back and let me know...

  • How do you empty mail trash with new firmware

In 1.1.4 you could go to your email account click advanced and set the IPT to empty mail trash once a day. I upgraded to 2.0.1 and there is no longer a setting on that screen to set when trash is emptied. I get a lot of spam so I need to empty daily. Anyone know how to do this with the new firmware?
    Thanks.

Also, you can move email to the trash folder directly from your inbox without even reading it. To do so from within your "inbox", click on "edit". You will notice there is a blue dot to the left of all new mail (shows you haven't looked at it.) When you click on edit, all the blue dots disappear.
Tap the same area where the blue dot was and a red circle will come up with a check in the center. Tap the Delete All button at the bottom and every red circled email will go directly to "trash".
In Trash, just do as the previous post says. Hit the edit button and then Delete All.
That's it and to me this is worth much more than the $9.95 for 2.0 that there is so much belly aching go on about on this forum.

  • Problem emptying the trash

    Hi
I have a problem when emptying the Trash on OS X Lion
It just says "emptying however many items" and it just stays like that for ages, i've left for hours and still nothing, which forces me to have to reset finder
I've tried holding option to empty the trash but still the same thing happens
    Any suggestions?

Select  ▹ Force Quit... from the menu bar, then select Finder and press return. From the Finder menu bar, select Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced and uncheck the box labeled Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash.

  • Emptying Mail Trash Folders on iPad

When I delete an email it goes into the Trash folder for that account, but doesn't delete when I close the app. How do I empty the Trash folder, without going through and deleting each and every (hundreds!) email?
    Thanks!

If you are talking about the iPad Mail App then go to the Trash mailbox and select Edit. There will be a "Delete All" button.

  • I'm having a problem emptying the trash.

im cleaing up my mac and i have 87 items in my trash. when i try to empty it the window pops up and just stays there like its stuck.. need help.

you should not shut down the computer using the power button on a regular basis. verify your hard drive with disk utility every time you do so. do it now. verify disk, not permissions. if it reports errors boot from the snow leopard dVD and repair the drive using disk utility there. also, reset your finder preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. then control-option-click on finder in the dock and choose "relaunch".

  • Problems emptying iPhoto trash

I've cleaned up my iPhoto library and am trying to empty the iPhoto trash to get rid of the 33k photos in there.  It quits with an error before finishing.  What can I do?  Is there another way I can get these off my computer so iPhoto won't be so slow and bogged down?  Thanks for any tips and advice!

iPhoto is known chocking when trying to delete large numbers of photos at a time. It's best to do them in batches of 100 or so at a time.
First try going into iPhoto's General preference section and deactivating the Item Count option and then try again.  Another user reported that fixed it for him.
If that doesn't work iPhoto is known to lock up if you try to delete a large number of photos at a time.  Here's how to get out of the predicament you're in:
If you don't use the Rating stars you can do the following: select all of the photos in the trash and Control-click to bringup the contextual menu.  There will be the 5 stars for the ratings.  Select either 5 or 1 to apply that rating to the photos.
Next create a smart album with the criteria:
selecting the number of start you applied to those in the Trash bin.
Move the photos from the Trash bin to the Library and the Smart Album will immediately be populated with those photos.
You can now select about 100 photos or so at a time and use the Command+Option+Delete key combination to move them back to the Trash bin and empty it.  Repeat with groups of about 100 or so photos till they are all deleted. Then delete the Trash bin in the Dock to completely remove them from your hard drive.

  • Problem with mail trash in iCloud

Greetings, all. In my mail preferences in iCloud, it says "Messages will be deleted from the trash after 30 days." But in actuality they are being deleted from the trash after 7 days. Why is this happening, and how can I make sure the messages stay in the trash for the full 30 days?
    Thanks,

  • HT4847 iCloud Storage still full even have emptied the Mail trash

Hi all.. I have problem with my iCloud Storage. I've deleted all the messages in Mail Application on iCloud.com and empty the trash also. But my iCloud storage still full, and the information from "Manage Storage", there are 4.2 GB data still on my Mail..
What should I do? please help..

Probably not. I have exactly the same problem. Had 2.1GB of Mail in storage. Deleted all mail from my Mail account.
    Emptied trash.
No effect. still 2.1GB of Mail, which, together with 2.7 GB of other backups etc, means my iCloud storage is full.

  • Mail won't empty the Trash

OK, this isn't the end of the world or anything but it is annoying.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard and I have my mail account set to empty the trash when I quit mail. So, like a dummy, I expect that when I open mail, the trash will be empty - wrong. Since the upgrade, this hasn't worked (it worked fine before). Now I'm having to go in and tell the trash can to empty itself.
    Anyone else having this problem?

Yes that does seem to fix the problem, but it also destroys all mailbox info. I have 8 mailboxes. Setting them all up again is way too much work. I will continue to force empty the trash until Apple fixes this problem, or a simpler solution is found. I restored my com.apple.mail.plist using Time Machine, so I'm back to where I was.

  • My mail was accidently deleted from my Apps. folder. Is there anyway to get it back if I emptied my trash already. I'm currently using MacKeeper to undelete all deleted items. Inly 150 hours to go. LOL

I don't know who responded but, the answer is the Mail App is no longer in my Apps folder.
I got MacKeeper because my Mac was slow and doing weird things. I found as long as I didn't a quick cleanup and removed duplicate files, eliminated foreign languages that were taking up space everything started working well, again.
I'm currently in the process of undeleting everything hoping that will bring things back. Unfortunately, I don't know if it will since I emptied my Trash. I have 150 hours to go on the undelete process.

Personally I would not trust MacKeeper to be able to undelete anything.
I would alo highly recommend that you uninstall MacKeeper.
From the sounds you message what it sounds like your problem was originally was insuffient disk space. Instead of MacKeeper what you should have gotten for yourself was an external drive.
    Do you have backups?

  • Quitting Mail doesn't empty the mail trash

Running latest version of Yosemite.  Basically, I have the mailbox behaviors set to empty the trash when quitting mail.  Problem is, it never does.  I have to manually select empty trash every time.  Any way to fix this?
BTW, I have multiple mail accounts, all POP using the same server settings.

Tried that, mail still sitting in the trash.  Only way it seems to empty the trash is if I manually tell it to.  BTW, this happens on two different computers running the same OS.  Both computers have multiple mail accounts (i.e. multiple email accounts on the same mail server).
