Problem expanding my mac partition after deleting a second partition

I had created a second mac partition to test out OS X Yosemite but after deleting it, my main mac partition is missing about 36 gb of space and when I try to
resize the mac partition to fill up the grey space it won't let me. How can I fix this? Any help is appreciated

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion From Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND- R keys until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
I've never done this myself in this way. However, in theory it should work. If it does not, then you must use a Full Internet Recovery process as follows:

  • Problem with partition after deleting a bootcamp partition

    Hi everyone !
First, excuse my english, I'm from France.
This morning, I've deleted the bootcamp partition I had created weeks ago. But when I've tried to extend the principal partition on the empty space left by bootcamp, the Disk Utilitaire says : "Partition failed : impossible to modify the partition map because the verification of the files system failed."
I tried to extend the partition with the hided partition that we use when we can't boot on the main partition (I don't know how to say its name in english).
If someone have a solution, it would be cool !

Back everything up (preferably twice, 3 times for the really paranoid).  I would use Carbon Copy Cloner and/or SuperDuper to make bootable clones to external disks.
Test the clone(s) by booting from them.
Repartition the boot disk the way you want it.
Restore your cloned system from the external disk.

Restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All of the original partitions will be restored, including the recovery partition.
If no recovery discs were created, you can obtain them from Toshiba.

  • Increase Mac partition after shrink Windows bootcamp partition

    I have a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.9.4 with a 500GB HD.
The HD is partitioned with 370 GB to Mac and 128 GB to Windows and I decided to shrink the Windows partition to 65 GB because I needed more space on Mac, and I barely use Windows.
I resized the Windows Partition using Mini Tool Partition Wizard and moved it to the end of the disk, leaving the empty right after Mac partition.
I'm able to boot Windows partition and use it normally. The Windows C: disk now has 65 GB.
When I boot on Mac OS X and try to use disk utility to increase the Mac partition, it says that the Windows partition still has 128 GB.
It is possible to use the empty space I created?

  • Can't resize partition after deleting old one

I was having issues with my Lion installation, so I added a new partition, installed from scratch and then rebooted and checked it worked before deleting the original partition.
However now I have deleted it I am just left with my smallish system partition and one that says free space, there it no divider to resize them, and I can't go back to 1 partition without it wiping my system, how can I merge my partition and the free space one to get back to a single partition?

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I had to go back to my old snow leopard install DVD, use the disk utility on that to repartition the drive. I made 2 partitions, installed Snow Leopard on one, used that to install Yosemite on the other partition and trashed the snow leopard install.
I haven't yet tried the Yosemite USB install method which would have probably been faster as I could have avoided installing SL.

  • Once you delete a second partition on your hard drive and there is only blank space how do you enlarge the original "Macintosh HD" to cover the entire hard drive space?

I just delete a partition on my drive and wanted to 1 either enlarge my original partition to cover the entire space, or 2 create a new partition in the free space. The problem is when I attempt to drag down the Macintosh HD partition and hit apply nothing happens. When i try to partition the free space (80 gigs) I hit apply and the new partition is only 200 mb with the 79 gigs still free space... HELP PLEASE.

Ah...so you've now learned why it's best not to change your mind after partitioning the bootup volume.
As far as I know, there's no "built-in" way to recover the free space after deleting a partition.
You're probably looking at third party software to accomplish what you're looking for.  Here's one:
    http://www.drivetoolbox.com/volume-manager.php
I can't speak to how well it works....I've never used it.  But, according to the site, it will do what you need it to do.
    I hope this helps.

  • Skype on Mac crashes after a few seconds

Hi, so a couple weeks ago I was trying to use skype and it just kept crashing after a few seconds of me opening it. I've tried reinstalling it, updating it, updating my computer, nothing has worked. If I'm actually able to call someone it's fine, but otherwise it just crashes on me.

    Hi Ruby,
are you using the latest Skype version 7.7? It was just released yesterday.
If it's still crashing for you on 7.7, then could you attach your crashlog to this thread?
    Thanks,

  • How to install Yosemite after deleting the entire partition?

I am trying to install a clean version of Yosemite via Mac OSX utilities. I erased my entire operating system and now want to do a clean install. I have entered the internet recovery mode by pressing command R once the operating system was deleted and restarting the machine.
I currently have four options which are restore from Time Machine backup, reinstall Mac OS X, get help online, Disk Utility.
as of now the option reinstall Mac OS X is telling me that it will set up and install a new copy of Lion. How do I have it install the Yosemite?
when I first purchased in 2012 it did come with the Lion operating system but I have downloaded and installed Yosemite from the App Store.

Oh, but it is since you have already erase the volume. What more do you wish to do? If you want to do an online Internet Recovery and your computer is able to do so, then do this:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Can't start up with Mac osx after installing windows on partition

    Hello guys.
I installed windows on a partition of 100gb and I restarted the iMac so I can log on to Mac osx.
I hold down the option key after I hear the sound but only the windows disk appears there.
I tried the DVD that came with my Mac by holding down the "c" key but nothing happened. I was holding it down for 2-3 minutes.
    I need some help here
Is there a way to boot Mac again?
Is there a chance I deleted Mac osx by installing windows?
And if there is how the **** am I getting it back since the osx DVD does not boot??
    Thanks in advance

The Macbook will not allow you to startup with your Install DVD while you have Open Firmware password enabled. Disable that first, then try again....

  • Can't restart to iMac 21.5" desktop after deleted Windows XP Partition...

Ok fellow Mac heads. If you could help me out here I would deeply appreciate it. I bought a brand spanking-new iMac 21.5" 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo about a month ago. I completely love it, but a week ago a friend of mine gave me a copy of Windows XP Professional and I thought it would be a great idea to try out BootCamp and partition out about 32 GB out of my 1 TB total HD and see what Windows looks like on my new iMac.
Well I ran though the instructions through BootCamp Assistant app, and all went well, Windows installed, and then I got a black (Dos-like) screen telling me that I had to press any key to continue and finalize the Windows install or press any key to escape. Well, there was not a key I could press that would do anything.
So I start freaking out. I end up holding down the "option" key and restarting. I boot to the Mac desktop instead of the Windows CD/disc in my optical drive still. So...I can...get to my iMac partition and desktop. So Then I completely and totally remove the partition and Windows through BootCamp Assistant app and one would think I am good to go.
The PROBLEM is...now if I hit "restart" on my iMac it takes me to a "black / blank screen with one small blinking curser" in the top (left) hand corner of my screen...and NOTHING...happens. And I can't boot back to my iMac desktop unless the original Windows XP disc is in the optical drive and I hold down the "option" key on my keyboard and then power-back up.
Can someone please shed some light on my situation and give any hints/suggestions/steps I can take to fix this issue? I would really, really...appreciate it. Many, many thanks to any/all of you out there.
    Sincerely.

  • After deleting Win at partition 3, there is still Windows option at startup

I bought an SSD, and hooked it with my old hdd to my system. There was a Mac and Win partition in my older drive. I erased system files, but couldn't formatted it because it has important info.
Now at startup, i managed to erase second Mac option and second Recovery option, but there is still a second Windows option, which linked to nothing.
My question is, how can i delete that obsolete option at startup? Is there anyway i can manually arrange that screen?

I'm talking about the screen when starting up the computer and pressing alt button. there has to be 3 options, mac, windows and recovery. instead there is 4th setting named windows, if i hit it, black screen and a blinking cursor appears and nothing happens. because i uninstalled that windows, but instead of formatting that partition, i just deleted windows files, because i have important info in that drive.
now, i want to delete that obsolete windows option at startup menu.

  • Has anyone else has USB problems on 2013 Mac Pro after 10.10.3?

Since upgraded to 10.10.3 I've noticed that my USB 3 card reader has stopped working with the USB sockets on the back of the Mac Pro.
The card reader works fine with a hub or Thunderbolt Display and the USB ports work fine as I've tested them with an external HD and external Blu-Ray drive.
Seems to coincide with the update but I can't find any similar posts elsewhere. Would be good to know if it's just an issue with my Mac or there are other instances.

  • Logical partitions invisible after deleting EISA WinRE partition on Equium

    Hi,
I have a double boot with Vista pre-installed and XP. So, I had in total 3 primary partitions and 1 extended with some logical partitions within it. I keep Vista on reserve and use solely XP as boot partition. I wanted to try a third OS but I had reached the max of 4 primary partitions on the disk. So I made a backup of and removed the EISA WinRE partition that was preinstalled with Vista, thinking this would only affect Vista, as my only boot is XP.
I used XP's Computer Management tool for this. But when I right click on WinRE and chose "delete", the partition became unallocated, but also ALL logical volumes on the extended partition, except for the first one.
I tried to revert the process recovering WinRE with the Acronis image, but I the extended partition still shows only the first volume and no trace of the rest of my data. Obviously, this was a big mistake and WinRE seems to contain more than information for Vista recovery.
How can I get back my logical partitions?
    Thanks for any help

Hmm I doubt you could be abele to restore the WinRE partition again without a usage of the Vista CD it seems you have completely delete this partition an also the whole data from the partition.
I agree with you and it was really a big mistake sorry but I dont see any big chanced to get it back however maybe someone has another idea.
