Problem exporting Video to mini dv tape, Audio OK

Help! The video portion of my movie is not exporting back to a mini dv on my Canon GL-2, which is the camera I shoot with. The camera is recognized, and the audio gets recorded, but no video, just a black screen. I was able to export to mini dv on my old G4 2002 Quicksilver, except when I went from QT6.5 to QT7.0, so I had to go back to QT6.5. But I just tried it with the camera and firewire cable on my old G4 that now has QT7.4.5, and it exported to a mini dv tape a different movie that is on the G4 fine (iMovie 6.0.3, iLife '06).
This is the first time I've tried it on the iMac, and I've tried several things to get it to export properly. The 59 minute movie is on the internal HD, with 27GB available (250 GB total HD). I've tried trashing the iMovie preferences, repairing permissions on the HD, re-installing QT7.5, but still no video upon export, only audio. I do let iMovie "Render & Proceed" before exporting. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bengt,
Well, your manual start Record procedure worked. I added a 1 second, blank, black title at the beginning to give me time to start the movie, then start Record, which would have been similar to the supposedly automatic procedure that asks how many seconds of black to add at the beginning and end of the movie.
It's amazing that it does not work the way it is should, and we have to figure out work-arounds for simple tasks like this. Thanks, Sam

  • Question for Sue and others - Problems exporting back to Mini DV tape

    Hi there Sue
This is a very interesting concept that you have mentioned in another of your posts:
"In the past, many posters reported this type of problem. There is a workaround that I realize should not be necessary, but it has helped many.
Instead of exporting to the camera, "Share" your iMovie video as a QuickTime Full Quality DV
Import this QT movie into a NEW iMovie project.
Then export (share) that to your camcorder.
It does take time to convert the imovie to QuickTime, but in the end it should work."
I have a similar problem where that when I want to back up by edited movie back to mini DV tape, there might be the occasional 'dropped frame' or image break up that appears from time to time on my back up tape. This then renders this back up useless for my purpose. Currently I select 'share' and then 'video camera' to perform this action. Sometimes I think that its Imovie's fault that these errors occur and sometimes I blame the video camera - who knows?!! One thing I do notice is that when looking at the video transferring from Imovie to Video tape, any error wont show on the Imovie window, but will show on the video camera flip out screen. I wonder if it means that it is the video camera's fault?
Do you think that your process might cure this problem?
    Many thanks
    Daniel

    Hi lorddim1,
In addition to Sue's great advice, another method of exporting to your camera may solve your problem - a method which I always use with success. In iMovie's Preferences (Menu>Preferences), check the box "Play DV project video through to DV camera". Set your camera to the VCR (Play) position and simultaneously click the Play button in iMovie and the Record button on the camera (or camera remote).
After exporting to tape, it's best to then un-check the Preferences box, as leaving it checked can sometimes mute the audio playback in iMovie in some versions.
The quality of the export is identical to that using the "Share" feature in iMovie. It may also help to set the iMovie Preference for Playback to "Standard (smoother motion)" and to ensure that, in the Timeline, "Show Clip Volume Levels" and "Show Audio Waveforms" are not activated (go to the View menu for these or Control-Click on the audio track/s). The less iMovie has to worry about, often the smoother the playback. Please note that the Playback preference has no effect on the quality of the export - it's only a setting for playback on the monitor.
    Hope this helps!

  • Final Cut Pro X export troubles: exports video with only half the audio.

Ever since I updated Final Cut Pro X, I've been having problems exporting. I either get error messages or the audio doesn't fully export. When I tried exporting a master file to my desktop, I got a message saying “error occurred when creating frame” then lists the frame number. Someone suggested copying the project file and pasting it into a new project. I did that, and it exported without the error popping up; but halfway through the video, the audio disappears, and does so in the same spot it disappeared in a previous youtube export before I tried the copy/paste method. I don't have the original footage; I'm making color correction changes to an edit; so I'm not sure if the second half of the video is somehow corrupted, don't know how to check that, and not sure what to do if it is.
Another suggestion given to me was to delete the event my footage is in, then create a new event, re-upload all the footage into that one, and relink my project files to it. He also said don't delete my event and project folder at the same time, which I'm not even sure how you simultaneously delete two things on a laptop. I don't understand how this method would work though, since deleting the event makes my project disappear since it has nothing to link to. I'm scared to try this method since I don't want to lose my work; I really don't want to color correct it all over again.
Is there any way to successfully export the file suitable for youtube posting, or is this a bug in the system they haven't fixed yet?

    Just turned off background rendering.
I'm not certain what you mean for specs in a specific point in the video, but here are the specs for the entire edit I initially received:
    Dimensions: 1920 X 1080
    Codecs: H.264, AAC, Timecode
    2 Audio Channels
    Total bit rate: 12,083
Size: 951,735,770 bytes (951.7 MB on disk)
Here are the specs for the exported video that has the audio issue:
    Dimensions: 1920 X 1080
    Codecs: H.264, AAC, Timecode
    2 Audio Channels
    Total bit rate: 12,274
Size: 966,817,082 bytes (966.8 MB on disk)
The video is 10:28 minutes long and the audio leaves at 5:57.
If that wasn't what you were looking for, just let me know. I'm not very good with technical stuff sometimes so may have misunderstood.
Is there something I should have done to the piece before I began color correcting it, like transcoding?

  • I am having problems exporting video form Lightroom 4.2 should I downgrade?  Suggestions?

I have recently been processing some time lapse videos when the 4.2 version was released and I updated my Lightroom.  With 4.1 it was taking approx. 20 - 25 min to export a 1 minute video, with 4.2 it started taking about 5-6 hours when it doesn't stall and crash part way through.  It seems to start quite quickly then about one third of the way through it slows to a standstill.  I haven't installed or made any changes to my computer.  The other two problem I've been having are lagging when using the spot removal tool, up to 30 seconds between spot removals and my Smug Mug plugin keeps disappearing for no known reason.  The video is my biggest problem at the moment.  Should I switch back to 4.1?  Here are my specs from my computer(taken while processing a video:

  • IMovie'11 won't import video from Mini DV tape

Hi, i don't know what happend, just two days ago everything was working fine, but now for some reason when importing window comes up it doesn't show any picture from play mode and it doesn't import any video. Help me please!

    Hi
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About . . / More . .
under Firewire.. what do you read . . ?
    More
    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choice / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
    No Camera or bad import

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Problems exporting video to AVI TYPE 1 format

    Hello
I use the Final Cut Version ProHd for editing my videos but I'm having problems when exporting the final project.
The file is exported in the .mov format but I need it exported as AVI type 1 since it is going to be played in a PC.
If I export it as a regular AVI, it comes out without sound.
Anybody knows of a plugin that could solve my problem or another way to solve this situation?

  • Problem exporting video to use in iDVD

I am working with anamorphic video in FCE 4.0.1. Video is imported from Canon GL2. The sequence I am working with has the anamorphic flag set and the canvas comes up as a wide screen view as I would expect. I export to QuickTime Movie (not self-contained), which we know sets the display size to 4:3. Open in QuickTime Pro, set the Movie Properties to 853 x 480 and save (as described in http://fcpbook.com/Video9.html ). Drag the movie into iDVD wide screen project. I've done this for a long time and it has always worked until recently.
Now when I preview the movie in iDVD it displays as squished 4:3. I suspect some upgrade of some software (probably QT or iDVD) has made it quit working.
I know there have been a lot of questions about this and I have tried various solutions without success. The only way I get it to come up as wide screen in iDVD preview is to use Quick Time conversion and export to a new file as 16:9. The big problem there is the chapter markers are not carried along, and I do not want them at every N minutes as iDVD will provide (I want them where I put them at transitions!). My only other thought is to export the full movie from FCE, bring it into iMovie, add the chapter markers there and export to iDVD (I understand iMovie is more compatible with iDVD).
I am using QT 7.6.0 and iDVD 7.0.3. This question may be more appropriate for those forums, but probably mostly only effects users that had exported from FCE. So I start with the post here...

Well, there is one more possibility using myDVDEdit, a powerful freeware application used to modify some parameters of a DVD image, before actually burning it. In this case you also need Toast or any other application able to make a video DVD image out of a VIDEO_TS folder.
The steps below seem complex, but in fact they are pretty fast, after a couple of usages.
    Instructions for using myDVDEdit:
    - Do not burn the DVD from iDVD but create a +disk image+ file
    - From the finder open the disk image and copy its VIDEO_TS folder to your desktop
    - Change the VIDEO_TS file permissions to let you modify its contents: in the finder Get Info panel select read/write for the folder and +all its internal folders+
    - Open myDVDEdit and use its File>Open command to open the modifiable copy of the VIDEO_TS folder
    - In the top left panel of the myDVDEdit window select +VTS 1+ (this contains the video)
    - In the panel below the video frame select +VTS 1+ among the vertical left tabs, and then Parameters among the top center tabs
    - Now you can see some parameters, that in your case should be: Coding mode: MPEG-2, Standard: NTSC, Resolution: 720x480
    - Aspect is what you need: this should be set to +16:9 auto letterbox+ - if not, select this option
    - Save - this is all you need to do in myDVDEdit
    - note that myDVDEdit window shows any change you make, but you can also open the DVD Player from myDVDEdit itself with File>Test with DVD Player
    - Now you have to +make a new disk image with the modified VIDEO_TS folder+: if you have Toast you have simply to drag the new VIDEO_TS folder to the proper Toast window and burn; otherwise you can use DVDImager, a free application, to create the new disk image, and then use Disk Utility to burn the real DVD (however DVDImager not always works with me... couldn't find out why).
If this doesn't work, you might also try the other options for the Aspect parameter. The full list is: 4:3, 16:9, 16:9 auto Pan&Scan, 16:9 auto Letterbox (the 1st to try), 16:9 auto Pan&Scan and Letterbox (2nd choice)

  • Problems exporting Video from Photshop CS4 extended

    Hi Guys
I have a multilayered psd file (RGB 8 bit, 955 px x 600 px) and have created an animation (8 seconds) using the animation panel in timeline mode. File consists of 4 image layers and 3 text layers. When I choose File/export/render video, The quicktime options are grayed out and all I can do is render jpgs from the sequence.
Any ideas? I know that I have done this about a year ago without problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Mathias...I think.
Anyway, I figured out my problem and wanted to share in case anyone else runs into this.
I was working on a new laptop (purchased expressly for CS4). After pulling what little hair out that I have left this morning, I decided to try it on my desktop machine. Lo and Behold, Quicktime options were available.
Idiot that I am, I assumed (yeah I know) that Quicktime would have been pre-installed on the laptop. Welllllll no, I didn't have Quicktime installed at all.
Installed Quicktime and all is well.
Thanks for your help. If you need me, I'll be sitting in the corner wearing a dunce cap.

  • Odd problems exporting videos: dropped frames, end glitches

Having some strange things happening on the work computer (which is a pre-intel MacPro running Leopard and latest version of FCP). In the last couple of weeks we've been having a lot of files that we're trying to export (by either directly playing them or "Print to Video" via Firewire to a Sony DV/Cam deck, which in turn passes it through to a Beta machine). The videos have been freezing up or giving "Dropped Frame" error messages. To combat the problem I've exported the videos (usually 10 minutes in length) to Quicktime Movie file, and then ran that file (thus making it one big file instead of 40 or so cuts/insertions, etc).
Dropped Frames ceased to be a problem, and it plays smoothly...but now when we get to the end, we get a weird white glitch. Figured it might want a fade out to smooth out the end of the file (even though it already had a fade out) but now the file is freezing up right before it gets to the fade out.
The really odd thing is, it looks and acts fine when I play from 5 seconds or so before the end of the clip. It's only playing it in its entirety that the end acts up.
I'm at my wit's end figuring out options. I've rebuilt permissions, restarted the computer, done a disc utility diagnostic/repair disc. I've deleted the preferences for FCP.
    Open to any suggestions!
    Thanks

No, I'm not using assembly mode.
The really odd and frustrating thing is that haven't done anything different that I haven't done with hundreds of similar projects. But all of a sudden things are happening (mentioned the dropped frames problem in case it is linked. Increasingly I've been having projects stop printing/playing due to dropped frames with no consistent possible reason, in terms of materials used, transitions, hard drive, etc.). No change of equipment or software (other than updates).
My boss complained about the white 'glitch' happening a couple months or so ago, and thought it was due to forgetting to do a fade-out at the end, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

  • Exported video file does not match audio file in length?

I'm back with the same problem.
Here are the specs for this project:
    Premiere Pro 5
Footage shot in HDV 1080i (Sony FX1)
    Edited Timeline length...52:25
    Destination: Blu-ray disc
    I have tried both formats in the AME...MPEG2 Blu-ray and H.264 Blu-ray
I have tried every combination of Presets within these two formats...Match Attributes, 1440x1080i, HDTV....etc, etc, etc
The machine is spending anywhere from 7 hours to 27 hours to encode these files.
When I open the two files after the operation has finished, I find I have an audio file 52:25 in length and a video file 43:34, no matter what format or preset I have chosen!
Upon playback, you can imagine the frustration...within the first two minutes the two are out of sync.
What am I doing wrong here.
This is my first sortie into the HD world of Adobe. I've been doing  Adobe Premiere SD for 10 years...and my deadline for the closed captioning is coming way too soon.
I appreciate any help you might offer.

Jim...Yes! I just did that this morning in frustration and by golly, they are both the same length. There is a note in the Project window after I copy to "Timeline" that says the video file is unencoded! Wierd! Another problem popped up in that the video and audio files are in different sequences in Encore. I cannot get them to play together. One will play and not the other...? I can't seem to drag them to the same sequence.
But, at least they are the same length! Mysteries in this HD business.

  • Strange Problem exporting video to iPod MP4...

I purchesed Quicktime 7 Pro last night, because I have been eager to put some video on my brand new 5th g iPod. I decided to start with a 23 minute episode of a T.V. series I have on DVD. I ripped it to my hard drive, then followed Quicktimes exact instructions to export it to iPod MP4. I did this at 9:30 AM this morning, and it is now 4:25. The progress bar says it is only 22% done!
My computer statistics; 2.26 Ghz processor, 512 Mb ram and an 80 gig hard drive only filled with about 30 gigs worth of data. It is virus free and runs like a dream, so why is this export of a 23 minute video taking so impossibly long????? Does exporting naturally take this long? What is the normal exprt time of a 23 minute show?
Thanks for any help or advice you can offer, I will really appreciate it.

I too have had this issue. It takes me 45 minutes to convert a 3 1/2 minute trailer. Videora freeware works infinitely better for me because it stretches video rather than letterbox it and it zips through files when converting them.
    Hope that helped you out.

  • Problem exporting video using compressor for a final cut pro vid

I've created a video in Final Cut Pro and trying to export using compressor to apple tv. Each time about half way through it crashes final cut and gives me the 'final cut pro had to quit unexpectedly'.
Haven't a clue what is going on, it happened sometimes when i was trying to conform to HD but when i did it bit by bit it was ok.
All the media is online so really haven't a clue. I've tried using quicktime conversion in pro-res then bashing into compressor and it works but interlacing is all over the shop, even with de-interlace filter.
ANy answers with regards to why its crashing greaty appreciated!
P.S when it crashes says something about a pro-core plugin

Can you update your profile, we don't know what your hardware set up is or your OS, or version of FCS. It could give you answers a lot faster if we know your details from the off.
Ok, what format is your original media, what are your sequence settings please.

  • Final Cut Pro 4:  Problems exporting video using QuickTime conversion

just recently updated my Mac to version 10.4.11 -
Ever since, Final Cut Pro won't let me Export my video using QuickTime Conversion.
Its starts exporting, then freezes at 79%. A general error message pops up.
I know its not a space issue, because I have 20GB left and the video i'm exporting is only 2 GB.
I installed all the software updates.
Can anyone help? Do I need a new version of Final Cut?

    1) this is the final cut express forum not the pro.
    2) 10.4.6 is not the latest, try updating to 10.4.11
    3) after any system update you must run disk utility to repair permissions or errors that may not have been addressed during the upgrade process.
    4) have you tried exporting as a reference movie then playing it in qtpro, if ok then export.
    5) what are you trying to export too?

  • What is the simplest way to get video from mini DV tapes into computer

My computer has no firewire connection. What is the simplest way to get the video from my camera (JVC GR-D340EK) ?

    Thanks for the reply.
The reason that I asked if this was a one time thing or not was related to my thoughts about asking you to look at the relative costs of have the DV data capture firewire done professional or by a friend versus going through looking for slots on your computer for a firewire card or purchasing a computer that still comes with a firewire port.
We will be watching for further developments.
    Thanks.

  • Help Please! Video is running slower than audio . Premiere CS6

    Hello everybaody.
I have that frustrating problem whit video runing slower than the audio. When i choose a video clip from my Phone for example(format 1980-1080 mp4 file)
It starts normal and after 4-10 seconds the video starts running slower and is getting me crazy. I thought it could be because of my hardware performance if its
not that good but actually I have a good notebook (Asus G74sx). It does happen whit most of the video files i tried but no all. Some video files are running good.
I am new to this video editing world so guys please help me and give me an advice what to do ? Its really annoying me. I have also exported some of these videos
that the picture is slower than the voice and after the export all the play programmmes are playing the same way. But when i play the videos before i touch them with
the Premiere they are running absolytely whit no problem.
Thank you for your time , and i am looking forward to hear from you guys.
