Problem extending my AX wireless using my old AE

I just received my new dual band AX and got it set up and the range is truly awesome. The new AX was an upgrade for my old AE. I wanted to use the old AE to extend my wireless signal and to also make a connection with living room entertainment center including my DirecTV receiver and also hooking in to my surround system in that room. However, the old AE isn't showing up in my Airport Utility screen and the light is a blinking amber light on the old AE. How do I get the Airport Utility to recognize the old AE and get this set up working?
Any help really appreciated.

No, I'm sorry - looks like I might have been using the wrong abbreviations. Pardon me for trying to appear more savvy than I actually am (actually I'm not a complete NOOB but this is a first for me with the wireless networking).
I do have a new simultaneous dual-band extreme, which is located in my office at home. I have moved my old airport express into the living room (about 40-50 ft from my new unit) to stream music (my DirecTV receiver can also be hooked up to the express in order to receive certain programming on my satellite).
That's what I WANT to happen anyway. But right now, it ain't happening.
And by the way... the range on this new AEBSn is phenomenal. I have about 3 acres here and I grabbed my MB pro and headed off towards the back side of my property while surfing the web. I kept a full 4 bars as far as I could walk on my property (probably 200' or so) and the web never slowed down a bit. I'm loving that!

I am trying to setup wireless using my old dome Airport Extreme Base station. I had previously used it about 5 years ago when I had dial up but have now switched to DSL with Windstream. I can not get connected as the ABS keeps trying to dial up(the old phone number). When I tried to change my network settings an annoying popup window says "your network settings have been changed by another application'. I have no idea what the message is all about and when I close this window it immediately pops up again and prevents me -as far as I can tell -from changing my Airport settings?  I need advice on how to get this wireless setup done. Maybe a reset? or something else? I have the DSL phone line plugged into WIndsteam Seimens Speedstream 4200 modem and then the ethernet (yellow) wire from the WIndsteam Seimens Speedstream 4200 modem to the port on the dome that is a circle of dots.

1)Can you explain how using the AEBS as a bridge will work with the Seimens Speedstream4200?
As a bridge, the AEBS will basically become a wireless access point. This will allow the AEBS to provide a wireless network, but still allow the Speedstream to provide NAT & DHCP services for the wireless clients connected to the AEBS. If the AEBS was left as a router, you would have a double-NAT condition which isn't necessary bad in itself, but would create a second subnet. That would make it more difficult for clients connected to the AEBS to access clients connected to the Speedstream.
    2) Is there a link that will guide me through the steps to set the AEBS as a bridge?
You can easily reconfigure the AEBS as a bridge using the AirPort Utility.
ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
3)Can I just connect the DSL phone line to the AEBS and eliminate the Speedstream4200?
Unfortunately no. The AEBS does not have a built-in DSL modem. You will still need the Speedstream to provide this function.

  • Problem Extending Linksys WRT54GS wireless with AEBS

    Hello,
I know this post might seem redundant, but I really can't figure out what's wrong.
    Here is my Configuration
    Linksys Router :
    WRT54GS v7 firmware :7.50.2
I tried the step-by-step instructions that i found here :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5338208
    Same SSID
WPA for encryption, because I read somewhere that with the new firmware, it was accepted.
And what I get, is the following :
I have a steady Green light on the AEBS, when configure for WDS.
But as soon as I get the green light, my powerbook can't connect to the internet anymore via the AEBS, but if I turn the AEBS off, then I the airport of my powerbook switches back to the routeur wifi and I have internet again.
I'd really appreciate any input, even if it is to tell me that it is not possible to make it work.
    Thanks

Yes, I understand what you are saying.
So you think that it should work, right ?
Doesn't the green light on the Airport tell me that the WDS settings are at least well configured ?
I guess what I don't really now how to set, is the internet tab, in the airport utility.
When I select using DHCP, it doesn't work : I don't get a green light.
When I select manually here are the setting I am putting :
    IP adress : 192.168.1.130
    Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
    Router : 192.168.1.1
And I filled the DNS fields, with the same DNS present on the linksys page,
What should I do for the "Connexion Sharing" field ?
    Thanks again

  • Can't configure Airport Express to Extend Airport Extreme Wireless

I have a working Airport Extreme wireless setup running 128-bit WEP. I now have a computer in a remote part of the house that doesn't have wireless, but has a wired Ethernet port. So I was told by a knowledgeable guy at the Apple store that I can have the AExpress pick up the wireless signal, then provide through it's Ethernet port a wired connection for my computer that doesn't have wireless.
First, is this true? If not, I'll return it.
Second, this has been a nightmare, hours and hours, and I'm pretty good with understanding networks. The book included with the AExpress is a joke, it basically just says "and let the software walk you through what you want to do."
The symptom is that I configure the device and update it with all the WEP 128 key info, but the light just stays blinking amber. I've updated the AE firmware.
What are the steps for setting up what I need? I'm using an up-to-date Mini to configure ... should the Mini be connected to the Airport Extreme base via wireless? Via wired? To the Extreme? Wireless?
This is clearly a sophisticated device with lots of promise and such, but the documentation and the number of posts to this board reflect that clearly there may just be too much complexity here for most people to handle.

Yes, this is true. You can extend the network wirelessly using the WDS feature of AirPort Base Stations. In turn, you can connect wireless or wired clients to the Remote Base Stations.
What are the steps for setting up what I need?
This Apple article should help explain the steps of setting up a WDS between two AirPort Base Stations: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454

I purchased a new Time Capsule (2TB - 2013), and I would like to use my old Time Capsule to extend the range of my wireless network. I can't get them to communicate. Any ideas?

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.
I did one post with all the pictures.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24161378#24161378
If you have issues just ask.
Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.
Tell us if you mean roaming not wireless extend.

  • Can I use my old TC as extended wifi over my new TC?

I just bought a 2TB TC, and it's working fine in bridge mode (because my provider uses NAT). My old 500MB TC (bought in 2008) is still working, so I wonder:
    1) If I can still use the old TC as an extended wifi. If so, how do I do it?
    2) If I can use the HD of the old TC as an extended HD, with my regular folders/subfolders/files on it.
    3) If I can access either my old or my new TC from a remote location over the Internet to get specific files. If so, how do I activate WAN? I can't see the setting on Airport Utility, though I've already enabled sharing there (on my new TC).
Thanks for any advise. I'm a newbie in this.

    Success! I was able to:
    1) Reconfigure my old TC 500MB as an extended wireless network to my base station, a new TC 2TB, by following the instructions in the link you provided.
    2) Erase my old files in the TC 500MB and replace this with my directory. Now it will serve as my archives. I don't have to refurbish them often since my new TC 2TB now acts as my Time Machine.
    3) Make both the base station and extended WiFi work, and each of the disks of the old and new TC too!
    HOWEVER, here's the sad part:
When I tried to connect to the old TC via Finder > Go > Connect to Server, I discovered that the address of my old TC is also dynamic, just like the address of my new TC.
Ungh. What recourse do I have to this problem short of demanding a static address from my provider (which I don't think they'll give, since they think a static address will lead everyone to establish a server business)?
Thanks in advance for whatever solution you might advise!

  • Having problems extending wireless network

I'm trying to extend a wireless network using a number of bits of hardware and would like to know what is the best way of doing it. I've had a good play around with things already, and have read a few tutorials/forum posts but I don’t think I've quite got it right.
    The problem:
The current position of the wireless modem/router is in an upstairs room at the front of the house. While this works well with internet connectivity generally (Apple TVs are connected wirelessly in two upstairs front rooms and the living room downstairs, also at front), there is poor signal at the back of the house downstairs where we have another Apple TV that keeps dropping out.
This Apple TV is on the other side of what was the house's external brick wall (the house was extended, so this is now a kitchen/diner that is in a conservatory extension). So a floor, some distance and a brick wall separate this Apple TV.
    What I have tried:
Initially I tried using an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to extend the BT Home Hub (BTHH) signal but had problems with this. According to BT, it should not be possible to extend the network in this way. So instead I tried this:
    In upstairs front room:
    * BTHH - transmitting 1 wireless signal (which I *could* use but …)
    * Connection from BTHH ethernet into AEBS which is then transmitted wirelessly (And *this* is the wireless network I will use for Home Sharing/Apple TVs)
    Downstairs, near back of house:
    * An old Airport Express (first gen A1088 device), which I configured to extend the existing wireless network (the one transmitted by AEBS, not BTHH). No physical connections here - it's just done wirelessly
This *appears* to be OK, at least from from Airport Utility tells me (I used an older version - 5.6 - to configure the Airport Express, V6 to configure the AEBS). However, the proof is in the pudding, as they say - the Apple TV with the weak signal remains weak (3/5 bars according to Apple TV signal strength indicator), despite the Express being just a couple of feet away inside the house.
    So, what can/should I do?
I think I have some more options. I have Powerline sockets that I can use, so I could connect ethernet in the upstairs room and then have the socket downstairs plug straight into the Airport Express.
What is the best way to set it up?
BTHH ---- ethernet ----> [Powerline] ---- ethernet ----> Airport Express
    BTHH ---- ethernet ----> AEBS ---- ethernet ----> [Powerline] ---- ethernet ----> Airport Express
Or is there a simpler way I could do it?
I know that I *could* do this:
    BTHH ---- ethernet ----> AEBS ---- ethernet ----> [Powerline] ---- ethernet ----> Apple TV
And have that TV use a wired connection instead of wireless, but I'd prefer not to do that for a couple of reasons:
    1) The TV is against a wall, with limited space behind for cabling/sockets and there is no immediate power supply (so I'd have to run it all through trunking)
    2) It's better if I can extend the wireless signal generally, not just for that Apple TV, but for all devices that might need to connect at the back of the house.
Appreciate any suggestions of what I can do here. I know this is a long note, but I wanted to be clear about what I have tried, what I've got at my disposal, etc.

    Thanks for the welcome.
I have checked the settings and have set both up from scratch a number of times. The TC is set to allow the network to be extended and the Express is set to extend the network and to allow wireless clients.
I have also tried a number of different positions for the Express including in the same room without improvement. The network extension does work but with a significant deterioration in network performance when connecting via the Express. I would expect some deterioration in performance for the signal to pass from Express to TC but this seems extreme. The effect is even more pronounced with iPhones (3GS, 3G and 2G). the connection is actually quicker over the mobile network even for the 2G phone.
    Cheers

  • Can I use my old AirPort Extreme to extend my network?

I recently replaced my year-old AirPort Extreme with a Time Capsule. The TC setup was the easiest ever, and it actually asked if it was replacing the AirPort and used the old settings, network name, et al. Had it up and running in five minutes and all computers and devices attached to it without any changes necessary.
So now that I've got this AirPort, I'm wondering if I can use it like an Express and put it into the farthest reaches of my house to extend my network and attach it to my new Apple TV. I also have an old AirPort Express which isn't the 'n' model. What to do?

So now that I've got this AirPort, I'm wondering if I can use it like an Express and put it into the farthest reaches of my house to extend my network and attach it to my new Apple TV.
Yes, you could use the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) to extend the wireless range of the new TC. Whether or not, it will be successful, will depend on both at distance you are trying to cover and what form of Wi-Fi obstructions (walls, ceilings, floors, etc.) there are between the two routers.

  • If i purchase a new airport base station can I use my old airport extreme 802.11n (3rd Gen) as both an extender of my wife for multiple iphones and as a router?

I operate an old airport extreme base station 802.11n (3rd gen).
There are 4 iphone5's and 1 iphone4 on my network along with 2 laptops running 10.6.8 and 10.7 respectively as well as two desktops with the same configurations as the laptops.
I get a sense that the iphones may/will be useless the new airport.
Can I use the old base station (operating as an extender/bridge/router) so that older equipment will operate in the short term until they are upgraded?
    Thank you.

I get a sense that the iphones may/will be useless the new airport
They will work fine with a new AirPort base station. You can use an iPhone or iPad to set up and configure the new base station. If you want to use a Mac to set up and configure the new AirPort, it will need to have at least Lion 10.7.5 installed. Mountain Lion 10.8 or Mavericks 10.9 could be used as well.
Can I use the old base station (operating as an extender/bridge/router) so that older equipment will operate in the short term until they are upgraded?
You can use the older AirPort base station to extend the wireless network. No updates will be needed to your iPhones or Macs.

  • Can I use an old Airport Extreme as an extender with a new Airport Express

Hi All,  I have Verizon Fios and the data line runs into my bedroom.  I purchased a new Airport Express today to replace the Airport Extreme (from 2006).  Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender (I'd like to set it up in the basement as I get poor connectivity there).  I tried using the Airport Utility - Other WiFi Devices to find the Airport Extreme, but it's not registering. Is what I'm attempting possible?  If so, how do I set it up?

Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender
Is this the "round" or "dome" shaped AirPort Extreme?
If yes, then it is not possible to have the AirPort Extreme wirelessly "extend" the signal from the AirPort Express.
However, the older AirPort Extreme can probably be set up to provide more wireless signal coverage if it will connect back to the LAN <--> port on the AirPort Express using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
In this case, the setup of the older AirPort Extreme will require that you have an older version of AirPort Utility installed on your computer. If it is a Mac, then the Mac must be running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility could be used to set up and configure the older Extreme.
f you have the "square" or "flat" version of the AirPort Extreme, then everything becomes much easier. Post back if you do.

  • Aluminium Extended Keyboard and Wireless Keyboard Problems

    Hi
I'm having problems with both keyboards. I have repaired permissions and repaired the disk.
I can't use the keyboard to invoke the Hardware test from the second installation DVD when restarting (holding done the D key), nor can I boot of the first installation DVD by holding down the C Key. Likewise, neither keyboards permit the pRAM to be zapped.
Holding down the Option key when restarting has no effect.
When typing, some keyboard characters and the function keys just won't work on the wireless keyboard. For example, on the extended keyboard I am using now, I can't type a capital t.
the only way to boot from the installation disk, is to select it as the start-up disk in System Preferences.
the login screen does not allow me to type in the password first time around. it just keeps adding bullets, e.g. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
the only way to get around this is to press enter, let the login window shake itself, and try again.
I think this is a software / firmware / driver problem. Perhaps it is related to the 10.6.8 update? the keyboard problems have only started happening today.
My wife said she had to stop everything the other day, because the iMac demanded (out of the blue) that a restart was required. She could do nothing but restart the iMac.
Without a fully functioning keyboard, the computer is not much use!
    Any ideas?

  • How can i use my old iMac as a extended desktop display for my new iMac?

I recently purchased a 21.5 in iMac and wanted to use my old iMac as a extended desktop. My new iMac has thunderbolt and USB 3.0 connections while my old iMac has firewire (400 and 800), USB 2.0 and mini-DVI. Is this posible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iMac has got Mini-DVI, you have a 17, 20 or 24-inch iMac that doesn't support Target Display. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external displays. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your old iMac doesn't support Target Display mode, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your old iMac as an extended display for the new iMac. The only thing you need is that both Macs are connected to the same network

I want to change my icloud id on my iPhone, but it won't let me now that i have upgraded.  I no longer have the password and the problem is It is using an old id which the email isn't valid and the security question does not think my birthday is valid.  I cannnot delete the account because "find my iphone" wants the password linked to this old account.  But when i go into the find my iphone app it is using my corect Apple ID.  How do i fix this?

If you still have access to your old email address, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email account and verify it.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  You can now go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your correct iCloud ID and password.
If you don't have access to your old email address, you will have to contact Apple to have them reset the password so you can disable Find My iPhone and sign into your iCloud account.  You can either go to https://expresslane.apple.com, select "More Products and Services", then "Apple ID", then  on the next page select "Other Apple ID Topics", then "Lost or forgotten Apple ID password" and click "Continue"; or you can contact Apple Support (http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/).

    Welcome to the Apple community.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID, verify the changes, enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone".
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, verify it once again, delete the iCloud account from your device and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.
