Problem going from Lightroom 3 to Camera Raw 4.1

I edit in LR3 then export to the original folder. When I open the edited photo in Camera Raw it is completely different. Not only is it different but it looks terrible. I'm making sure that when I export it from Lightroom that I have the correct version of Camera Raw chosen so I'm not sure what the issue is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Lightroom 3 is using the equivalent of ACR 6.x so ACR 4.1 cannot use the develop settings from that version of LR.
Lightroom 1 is fully compatible with PS CS3 ACR 4.x

  • Help going from Lightroom to Photoshop w/ raw

I recently updated to PS 5 and LR 3. I'm need some help with working with RAW files. When in go to work on a RAW file from LR, when PS opens the image the image adjustment menu doesn't appear in PS. When I open a RAW image directly in PS the adjustment menu is attached right to the image. When I go from LR to PS the menu doesn't appear. Is there a way to get menu to appear? Is there a reason why it doesn't ? Hope this makes sense.

I don't use Lightroom but would venture a guess or two. If you open a raw file in Lightroom and use Lightroom Develop module then use lightroom to open that image in Photoshop as image or as a smart object there is no reason to need the ACR window for the RAW file been through Adobe RAW conversion engin. There are ACR settings set and there may even be a rgb image in memory. Therefore there is no reason to display the ACR user interface the RGB Image can be passed or the ACR settings and RAW data can be passed the Adobe RAW conversions which can produce the RGB images to be edit.  If you open the RAW image as a smart object if you double click on the smart object icon in the smart object layer in the Layers palette the ACR user interface will open so you can make adjustment fot the smart object which you must have ACR open in photoshop and use Photoshop save to have Photoshop undate the enbedded smart objects ACR setting.  The interface the will open will be ACR user interface not Develop module interface.

Blue screen/Computer shuts down is almost always a hardware malfunction or a driver problem.
Make sure your video driver is up to date.
If it is, then the next suspect, in my mind, is overheating, make sure all of the fans in your CPU case are working properly.

CS5 won't open NEF files from D600, despite updating camera raw plug in.  How do I fix this?

The D600 was first supported in Camera Raw 7.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and later - not CS5 unfortunately.

  • Lightroom 2.1 / Camera Raw 5.1 Confusion

    Hello,
I installed Lightroom 2.1 and when I go to the About menu it shows me correctly, that I have 2.1 but it still says: Camera Raw 4.6.
I have Photoshop CS3 and when I tried its automatic update option it did not find the newest Camera Raw 5.1.
    I installed it manually.
But Lightroom still says: Camera Raw 4.6.
Do I have it or do I not??
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Tomasz

"You are going to send JAO into cardiac arrest. Could you just this once; TRUST what he is saying. It is a simple concept, maybe to simple for you to under stand."
It's a pity that asking a fairly reasonable question here prompts such a patronising reply!
"Maybe we should try this tack.
THERE is no ACR in LR:::: None, never was, never will be.
LR uses the pipeline that was developed for ACR and THATS all.
That curent pipeline version is 4.6"
Never said there was, simply asked about the confusion that is the statement in LR and how it relates to PS ACR, i.e. in 'About PS LR' it says 'Camera Raw 4.6'. Now, if you can't see how that causes confusion for users of the 'other' Camera Raw 4.6, then I think it's me who's going to have a cardiac arrest. I think most people would find that totally confusing.
"NO ACR in LR. Repeat there is no ACR in LR."
No, but there are statements about Camera Raw versions and there is a cameraraw.dll in the LR folder.
"Users of PS 3 cannot not use version 5.1"
There is no confusion about that.
"PS CS 4 uses versions 5.0 and above. Always will."
No, it probably won't use version 6.0.
Many people have posted on various forums about the confusion over Camera Raw in LR, so it isn't obvious. The fact is that although LR doesn't actually use an ACR plugin, there has been an assumption by many users that it does use the same engine as ACR, and the fact that it states a Camera Raw version number within the software adds to that reasonable assumption.
Up to CS4 the Camera Raw version in LR has been consistent with the latest CS3 ACR version which also adds to the confusion.
I think one of the main concerns that some users have is that LR will not continue to support newer cameras. I mean for example, when the 5D MkII is incorporated into ACR version 5.x, will LR Camera Raw version be shown as 4.7 or will it revert to consistency and call it 5.x?

  • Can I upgrade my Lightroom 3.6/Camera Raw 6.6 version to the latest 5.2 version?

Can I upgrade my Lightroom 3.6/Camera Raw 6.6 version to the latest 5.2 version?

“Camera Raw” is the name of Adobe’s photo-processing engine that supports raw files.  The phrase commonly refers to the Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop; however, less often, it merely refers to the version of the Adobe engine whether it is that of the plug-in or in LR, itself.  Unless you are talking about Photoshop then just say LR 3.6 and there’s no need to also say Camera Raw, because that will be confusing to people who are also familiar with Photoshop.
If you are interested in buying LR, then go to Adobe’s Updates page and download the LR 5.2 update and use it in Trial mode for a while to make sure it works correctly on your particular computer, then you can go buy LR from Adobe.com and input the serial number you get into the trial LR but there’s no need to download and install the LR 5.0 version because that’ll be older than the 5.2 update you’re already using.

What camera model took the pictures?  It is a question of when your camera was added for support. Check the following list and find your model. That will tell you what is required to work with your files.

    Besides calibrating you rmonitor:
Make sure that in PS you have selected ProPhoto RGB as Working Space.
Go > Edit > Color Settings.
LR uses ProPhoto RGB and tht cannot be changed. So you have to make sure that PS uses the same Working Space.

  • Package of Lightroom 5 and Camera Raw 8 ?

I heard that the Camera Raw 8 is supported the RAW file of some aged Leaf Digital Back, is that mean if I buy a Lightroom 5, the Camera Raw 8 is included in the package?

Camera Raw technology is built in to Lightroom. Lightroom does not use the Camera Raw plug-in. Everything that Camera Raw is capable of doing is part of the Lightroom program. So if you look at the list of supported cameras for the current version of Camera Raw or Lightroom you will see the list of cameras that are supported by either Camera Raw or Lightroom.

  • Can Lightroom import/use Camera Raw saved settings from Photoshop CS2?

Before getting LR, I used CS2. I would load my CR2 files from my cam into CS2 and Camera Raw would pop up for raw editing. I would edit the photos, but sometimes save the settings to a XMP file. Those files would then be available for any raw photo, i just had to select that setting.
Is there any way to import those saved settings files into LR? There's just text in them, what about importing the text somewhere? I dunno... I really want to use these settings files in LR!!
Also, If I change things to a photo in LR, does it have a similar save-the-edit feature like camera raw?
    Thanks!!
    -Ziv

If you import images with those side car files, you'll get those settings automatically. If you've already imported the images without the side cars somehow, you can put the side cars back and do read metadata from files.

  • Random problem opening RAW images from I-photo into Camera Raw 4.1

Hi there, sometimes when I double click an RAW .NEF image in i-photo it opens into the Camera Raw adjustement window and sometimes not. This is shots from the same shoot and they're all definitely .NEF files. The shots that have already opened always open in the CR window and the others don't.
Any ideas? This is driving me crazy!
I'm running Photoshop CS3 on a quad core intel Mac.
    Many thanks

  • Is 5d mark II raw (CR2) file different from CR2 file from 5d? Adobe Camera Raw error on mk II not 5d

I use Photoshop Camera Raw plugin (Adobe) to preprocess color, then finish image preparation in Photoshop.  Never a problem opening CR2 files, usually from my own 5d camera.  But a customer sent a few CR2 files that won't open (error says it is wrong kind of document).  So far no explanation or fixes from Photoshop users... thought I would ask the Canon experts.  Why would CR2 file from 5d mk II fail but CR2 files from 5d all open ok?
Still using Photoshop CS2, and the Camera Raw plugin is v 3.7.  I really want to continue this workflow (works for me), prefer not to experiment with dpp or other possibilities.  Not ready to upgrade yet to Photoshop CS6.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have a photographer friend who has used Photoshop for years and basically never used anything else.  He bought his 5D III from a store which was offering a free copy of Lightroom with the purchase.  He didn't buy because of the incentive... he bought his camera and a copy of Lightroom came with it.  He put it on the shelf to collect dust.
One day we're out shooting and somehow get onto the topic of how he's processing his images and I mention Lightroom to him (I use Aperture, but that's for Mac users only -- he's on a PC).  He tells me has it... it's on the shelf... he never installed it.
I gave him my "are you crazy" look and then proceeded to tell him why he needs to learn to use Lightroom.  He now pretty much just uses Lightroom and is much happier for it.
I'll sum up (again... I'm an Aperture user but Lightroom was designed to fend off Apple from taking over in photography.)
Photoshop is NOT made for photographers.  It's made for people working in graphics arts and publishing, etc.
Apple, recognizing that the tool was awkward for photography made a tool targeted specifically at professional photographers...and Aperture was born.  Adobe, seeing this as the very real threat that it is, realized they'd better get busy.  Adobe produced Lightroom.  Both are targeted to photographers and NOT to those in graphics arts or publishing.
I think of Aperture and LIghtroom as being outstanding at image management for large collections of photos and also outstanding when you come back to your office with cards loaded with images that now all need to be processed.
This is a painful long and tedius task of opening things image by image in Photoshop.... but a breeze to do in Aperture or Lightroom.  You don't actually open images... you import the entire contents of the card into your library and now you can breeze through them apply adjustments as needed.  Some types of global adjustments such as "white balance" can be applied to every image in the shoot as long as it was taken in the same lighting.  No need to do that image by image... you adjust one, then select all the other images shot in the same light and tell it to apply the same adjustments.  Don't try that in Photoshop... you'll injure yourself.
Lastly... Photoshop is a "destructive" editior.  You can take precautions to try to make sure you don't actually edit any original data, but the tool WILL let you change original data if you aren't careful.  Aperture and Lightroom are non-destructive by their very nature.
I find that with Aperture or Lightroom that I still do need to open an image in Photoshop.  Aperture and Lightroom can't do everything.  They do not, for example, allow you to create composit images by combining elements of multiple other images.  But I will say it's not often that I need to open something in Photoshop anymore.
If you are a photographer and you've been using Photoshop because that's what you know... you _really_ need to evaluate one of the tools which were actually intended for use by photographers.

  • Lightroom 3.6 Camera Raw 6.6 - Issues with NEF files

    Hello all,
I'm sure I'm not the only person with this problem, I'm a Nikon user and when I view NEF files in Lightroom 3, before the images loads completely it looks like it did on my camera but when the loading phase is done the picture darkens and it changes, sometimes darkens, sometimes changes tones.. What is happening here and is there any way around this with NEF files?  I love Lightroom but if I can't work with NEF the way they look on my camera then I'm going to have to make the switch over to Capture NX 2 and I really don't want to....  In addition I have no problems with JPEG files so I know the issue is isolated to NEF files.  I'm also on a Mac with 10.6.7 if that makes any difference.. not sure it does though.
    Please help!!

This is not just a characteristic of NEF files.  Adobe software and other third party software does not read the in camera settings, instead it applies default settings.  The initial image you see is probably the stored image that was processed by the camera, but it is replaced by the image rendered using the defaults from Lightroom.  The default camera profile is Adobe Standard, which does not match what you get from the camera.  Adobe has generated Camera matching profiles for Nikon and Canon cameras and a few others.  Go to Camera Calibration and select the same profile you have selected in the camera - it will have a name like Camera Standard, Camera Neutral, etc.  If you have other parameters set to nominal in the camera, this will be a close match to the JPG from the camera.  You can set a new default for Lightroom that will use the setting you select and it will use this when any new NEF files are first opened.  If you want the NEF file to open identical to the JPG from the camera then Nikon software is the only option.  If you were using a Canon, then Canon software would be the only option.

  • Curious question about Lightroom previews and Camera Raw Cache

Posted in the Flickr Lightroom Group as well:
I have noticed something about the Lightroom (3.6) previews and Camera Raw cache that have me puzzled.
I create a brand new empty catalog and purge the Camera Raw Cache.
Then I import ONE Nikon RAW (NEF) file with dimensions 2592 x 3872 (10 megapixels - 10,036,224 pixels).
Next I export that NEF file to an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF file. You would expect the size of that TIFF file to be roughly 30 megabytes (10 megapixels x 3 bytes per RGB value) and in fact the TIFF file is 30,135,830 bytes in size. If you export the same TIFF file but specify ZIP compression the resulting file size is 10,834,038 bytes. Obviously the compression obtained here is going to be highly specific to the image but so far no surprises.
During import I specify render 1:1 previews and I go into Loupe mode and view the entire image at 1:1 size. I also visit the develop module and do a bunch of manipulations on the image but no cropping.
At the conclusion of all of that I exit from Lightroom and examine the size of the Camera Raw Cache folder as well as the Lightroom previews folder. It would be my expectation that the previews folder  should have a rendered full image and that the Camera Raw Cache should also have a rendered form of the raw data. What would you expect the size of those respective folders to be?
In fact - in my trials the previews folder totals a mere 1,675,264 bytes and the Camera Raw Cache which contains one DAT file corresponding to the one cached image is merely 267,374 bytes. This does not seem like nearly enough bits to preserve the rendered image nor is there a full size image tucked away in the actual catalog either - that file is not large enough to contain that. And yet I can use Loupe mode at 1:1 size and move from image to image with no loading delays (even when importing multiple files).
I'm wondering if I've missed something obvious in my analysis and if not, whether someone might care to speculate as to what magic Adobe is practicing here. Even if we grant them some special algorithm to compress their previews I don't see how they can achieve a compression so much greater than the ZIP-compressed TIFF file achieves.
And for those that might think to ask - I've repeated these experiments with multiple raw images and on both the PC and MAC platforms.
I look forward to some answers or interesting theories or perhaps someone might replicate the experiment and report findings.

MadMan and Hal - thanks so much.
So that was my D'Oh moment of what I was missing - the use of re-rendered JPGS as previews. That certainly does fit with the file sizes I am seeing. I had naively assumed that the previews might have tried to preserve the full fidelity of the image - But as you suggest that full fidelity is likely only there in the develop module.
This perhaps explains another observation from the Develop module - moving from one image to another might display "Loading" either briefly or across a longer duration. My guess is that the length of the loading process might have to do more with what is cached in RAM than cached on disk in the camera raw cache. More of a shame then that 64-bit Lightroom on 64-Bit Windows cannot grab more RAM than it seems to do at present.
