PROBLEM: icons automatically move to right of desktop at each restart
My desktop icons automatically move to the right of the desktop at each restart, destroying my personalized arrangement. I'm operating on Mac OS X 10.6.8, on brand new iMac purchased this summer. Snap to grid is not activated. Can anyone help me fix this frustrating problem??!!

Desktop Icons Stacked in lower right of Desktop
Since installing Tiger, when I try to "Clean Up" the desktop the icons get stacked on top of one another in the lower right of the desktop. I rearrange them and do another "Clean Up" and they go back on top of each other ina different order.
I have selected "Arrange by Name", but that doesn't seem to change the symptoms.
Any ideas??

JeffI had the same problem myself – all I can offer you is to remove the com.apple.finder.plist from your users/you/library/preferences folder and see how you go. It worked for me, but then came back (but having re-done the same again though all seems to be back to normal). If all else fails its useful to know that you can remove (no need to trash - just stick it on you desktop) the whole preference folder (users/you/library/preferences ONLY don't go poking around in the system folder – or any item therein [like com.apple.finder.plist]) to see if the problem goes away. If it does you can always try to isolate . . . good luck

Desktop color reverts to THOUSANDS at each restart
I've got an Apple 1600x1024 Cinema Display and a Samsung SyncMaster as a second monitor, and both revert to THOUSANDS of colors ONLY FOR THE DESKTOP at each restart. The display preferences panel indicates that they are at millions but that is only true for application and finder windows, not the desktop. (I use solid colors, but also tried the patterns, etc., to no avail.) To actually get the desktop to millions, I need to change each display setting to thousands (which does nothing), then back to millions (which then actually sets the desktop to millions). I've logged on as root, and the display setting there is fine. I've trashed the user (me) prefs for "com.apple.desktop.plist" as well as "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", but the problem continues. Any suggestions?
Have you trashed the display color caches? You might want to try to remove any "com.apple.colorsync.profiles" files in /Library/Caches, and hide them in the Trash for a test.
Also, drag the following files to the trash:
_ com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
_ Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
_ Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
_ com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
_ Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
I'd then boot into Open Firmware (CMDOPT_OF) & type:
reset-nvram <return>
set-defaults <return>
reset-all <return>
...and then, clear the PRAM on the reboot (CMDOPT_PR, 2 chimes).
Prior to all of this, you might want to unplug both monitors - from the utility power and from the system, and let all power drain completely, leaving them off for 8-10 minutes. I've seen monitors re-set themselves this way before.

HD Icon, top right of desktop.

Being new to Mac's, I have recently bought a book, 'Mac Basics in Simple Steps', by Tom Myer. On page 18, 'The Desktop', it explains about the Macintosh HD icon in the top right hand corner of the desktop. There is an ALERT entry that states, "Never try to delete, move or eject your Macintosh HD icon. However, it is okay to rename your start-up disk to something friendlier if you like".
OOPS!!!!! Before buying the book, I had successfully removed it; where to, I no not!!! Doing so does not seem to have adversely affected my MacBook Pro in any way. Do I need to worry, is there a way to get it back?

sig; I found the Macintosh HD icon as you suggested, but when I tryed to drag it onto the desktop it would fly back to its original position in folders. I then tryed copying and pasting, but I got the following message. "You can't paste "Macintosh HD" at this location, because you can't paste an item into its self".
I had also appealed for help to SWMUG; (South Wales Mac User Group) and got the following reply, which worked a treat. This was so simple, it amazed me; so I'm posting it for others in the same boat as me.
First click on the desktop, click on Finder in the top menu, click Preferences from the drop down list, click General and tick the box next to Hard Disks, and the HD icon will re-appear.
This worked a treat for me and only took seconds to do.

When I insert a disk, a disk icon does not appear on my desktop, nothing happens and there is no option to eject. I have to restart in order to eject the disk. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

How to adjust userChrome.css to move the #identity-icon-label to the right side of the #urlbar?
I hate the way the #identity-icon-label moves the URL over to the right. I've applied a patch to just hide it, but I'd rather make it behave more like IE8 and just have that box show up way over at the right end of the #urlbar.
So far, my customization experiments in userChrome.css havent yielded the desired result. Also, I thought it would be nice for someone else to be able to search and find a solution to this issue. (If it can be answered.)

For MacBookPro users, Leopard, please help. Suddently the sound froze. The icon on the top right hand bar doesn't move and there is no sound coming from my computer. It happened after I shut down my computer, which I do rarely, rather than put it to sleep. Please help.

It showed a number of apps to be updated on my iPad, so I clicked 'update all' as usual. It started, then the screen went white. The icons for the apps on the desktop went black, as they do, with the first one half way around the little circle timer, and two marked 'waiting', with others not that far into the process. They all stopped. Now I can't stop the update process in the App Store, or use any of the apps. What do I do next? Help, please!

From what I can gather you have a few apps that only display "Waiting". The following is a past discussion that dealt with a similar issue, the answer may help you as well:

Try tapping the App, so that it changes to Paused instead of Waiting, then tap it again to resume the install.
Make sure you don't have any paused downloads in other apps either, like the App Store or iTunes Store.
If that doesn't do it, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

How can I get the firefox icon from the bottom of my desktop moved up onto the scree?

Wasn't able to view all forums, am hoping this question will appear in the correct one.
Helping a friend with his Dell desktop - Windows XP SP3. When we try to start up, the desktop background picture appears, but that's it. No desktop icons, no taskbar, cannot right click, nothing.
When I open Task Manager via Ctrl-Alt-Del, I can click the New Task button and run a few programs. IE, Outlook Express, and others. We cannot get to File Manager or any file window that would access his data. Control.exe does not open. [NOTE: sorry, I said
Control.exe but meant Explorer.exe]
I opened a command prompt window and ran chkdsk without /F, it listed a number of index errors. when I ran with /F and said yes to run at next boot Chkdsk did run, but no results, no changes were made, even with /F.

All menus have display problem (flash) when using FF on extended desktop monitor
I use two monitors at work. Each time I display FF on the "secondary" monitor (extended Desktop), all menus (normal menu, bookmarks, right click), flashes going from visible to hidden and so on).
I have the same problem. Windows 7 (64 Bit), extended desktop, 2 monitor system. I have AMD HD 4800 graphics card with all AMD updates current as of 12/8/2012.
The drop down menus display briefly (flicker) and then are not visible. If I am careful and know the dropdown line I want, I can blindly select it. This happens only on the second monitor on the extended desktop. If I move Mozilla to the primary monitor the same page works correctly.
Disabling the hardware acceleration and restarting Mozilla resolves the issue. While I can use Mozilla, it is still not ready for prime time using hardware acceleration.
Given that it is the only Browser or applicaiton that has this problem with displaying drop down menus on the second monitor, I would suggest that it is either a Mozilla hardware acceleration problem or Mozilla needs to work with the graphics card manufacturers to resolve a problem that only Mozilla seems to have with their drivers. -
Why does my mac turn my downloaded movies into .m4v and move it to the desktop?
For about 4 or 5 months now I have had this problem. When I doenload a picture to my macs download file the computer converts the file to .m4v and moves it to the desktop, deleting the original download. Why? I dont know what I may have downloaded, it's been a while since this started.Thanks.
Why? Because you told it to.
Remove whatever folder action you installed on your Downloads folder. Right-click the folder, Services >> Folder Actions Setup.
If there's no folder action, then some piece of software you installed and have running is camping on your Downloads folder and doing the conversion.
Don't bother claiming you didn't... computer software isn't magic. The machine didn't just decide to do this one day. -

I'm running Windows 7 32 bit on an ASUS netbook with 2mb ram. I installed both Air 3.7 and BBC iPlayer Desktop using Google Chrome. I downloaded 3 BBC programmes. Two ran fine but the third wouldn't start and I kept getting a message to try again later. I deleted this programme and downloaded it again, with the same result.
So I uninstalled both Air and the BBC iPlayer Desktop, the Air exe file and the two folders at the following locations:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AIR\ and
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\BBCiPlayerDesktop.xxx
Since doing this each time I try to install Air either on its own or with the BBC iPlayer software I get the message part way through installation:
"Sorry, an error has occurred.
An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator."
I have run the Microsoft Fix it programme and still get the same result.
I have tried everything on your Trouble Shooting page apart from the bit about the elevated command prompt, but as I'm the sole user and administrator, that seems unnecessary.
I have closed Chrome and tried installation using Windows Explorer but with the same result.
I have tried all the above with Microsoft Security Essentials running and disabled. And I have tried the same with Astrill on and off.
I have had a response from the BBC with much the same advice as appears on your trouble shooting page.

How do I move PSE 9 from desktop to laptop after I install new PSE11?
Just received PSE 11, want it on my desktop and then move PSE 9 from desktop to laptop? It there a sequence that will prevent problems?
First make a full backup in PSE 9 using the organizer's backup command, then install PSE 9 on the laptop and restore the backup there. If all is well, you can then deactivate PSE 9 on the desktop if you don't want it there anymore (not required, unless you've already installed it on a third computer). When you install PSE 11 it should find and update your catalog on that for you.
If you don't use organizer, it doesn't really matter how you do it.
