Problem importing mp4 files in director 12

Hello,
I have a new question.
In my project I have almost 60 mp4.
The size is around 10- 20 MB.
Director doesn't import all of them. After ten-fifteen imported, Director becomes slower, the thumbnail doesn't come out, I can't open .mp4 in the mp4editor and  Director often crashes.
Do you know why?
How can I figure out with this problem?
Elisabetta

Hello Elisabetta,
NOTE: I’m only taking a GUESS here, as my largest ever project was 500 meg!
Not enough RAM might be your problem???
Director likes to load all the cast members into ram while in authoring.
Even though Director tries to work - it shows (place holder) blank cast members until they fully load into ram.
After a few videos showing blank cast members - that’s when things start to get flaky.
Sometimes you have to give director time to load the videos into ram.
The way I get around this...
Make a set low quality versions of all the videos - say 1mb in size each.
Director only links to the external videos anyway!
Once your finished with everything, and published it as a projector - now replace all the external videos with the top quality ones.
This way will require a folder with all the linked external videos inside them!
Videos steam well after you publish as projector or shockwave.
Even though a compressed mpeg4 video shows a file size as 10meg - it can require over 100 meg of ram to fully display it while working with it in authoring.
Just like when doing video editing!
I would guess that your going to need 32 gig of ram to be able to work with so many videos - at once.
60 * 20 mb = 1.2 gig of compressed videos.
More like 60 * 200 mb = 12 gig
How I do internal videos...
To embed all the videos inside a single projector file - first I convert all the videos to .swf format
I work with one dummy black screen video - I copy it over and over, as the names of all the real videos - I put them all into the right places on the stage - then once i’m happy with everything - I import all the real videos over the top of all the dummy ones.
Then I publish. I do not try to view it within authoring in case it crashes!
regards
Milky

• Problem importing MP4 files into iTunes

I'm tearing my hair out here! I've used a DVD ripper to convert a track from a DVD into an (iPod friendly) MP4 format. I then dragged & dropped the MP4 "chapter" into iTunes Library, where it appeared in Movies, but I had to click on Advanced>Convert Selection for iPod. It took iTunes about 1 hour to convert the track & then it played on iPod. (Was SO CHUFFED I'd got it to work!) Flushed with success, I tried doing several tracks at once but when I tried to get iTunes to convert again, I got a message saying the file is already in the correct format. And although file is showing in Library>Movies, it doesnt register in my iPod>Movies and of course it won't play. Please help.

Sorry, I don't know what is specifically wrong with your setup but maybe these links will help...

• Importing mp4 files into Adobe Premiere Elements 4

Hi
I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 4 here and am having problems when importing mp4 files. They jump and skip, Flicker Green every now and then and generally just flip out on me.
Does anyone know what's the problem here and whether there's any specific settings i need to tweak within APE to get it to work properly?
TIA

Ok thanks for the info guys
My original recommendation was to convert these but as mentioned wasn't the most popular option.
I've found some other threads on here in regards to a similar problem with Samsung cameras and APE 4. These also mention that the files need to be converted to a friendlier format before importing.
Thanks again

• Problem with mp4 files

hi
i am having a problem with importing mp4 files in itunes library. i have saved music from my nokia phone to my laptop using zune and it has properly saved everything in mp4 format (little strange but true that it uses mp4 format for music). now when i want to import these files into itunes, it does nothing. i am able to play the songs using quick time. Can anyone help. thanks

Kasa,
Thank for the tip. I have been having the same issue lately and I couldn't find the answer anywhere until now. However, I am subscribed to a work podcast that outputs mp4 files created on a PC with AVid formated with the H.264 compression using Sorenson Squeeze 4.5 and iTunes will not download them. When I had an episode emailed to me the file extension name change worked. But still, subscribing to the feed is pointless if I can't even download it to change the extension.
While this may sound like a minor thing it is important to me because it is work related and I want to be sure everyone, no matter what platform can consume them. I am using iTunes 7.4 too. Did I miss a critical Quicktime update along the way? I have Quicktime 7.2 - the latest version.
Thanks.

• File error when importing .mp4 files

Hi there,
I have a problem concerning importing files.
I had some .mkv files, which I converted to .mp4 files with just 1 audio track and no subtitles using Handbrake.
Problem is, I can't import these files into Final Cut Pro 7.
It gives the following error:
"File error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
I have no problem importing .avi files, or .mp4 files that haven't been converted.
Does anyone know what I should do? I don't know any other program to convert .mkv files, so basically, I'm bound to using Handbrake.
Thanks in advance!!

I didn't know Handbrake was such a bad tool.
I never did much video-editing before, so I usually used iMovie, and the Handbrake-converted files worked fine with that.
And I did what you said, I converted the video to .mov with MPEG Streamclip, using the mentioned presets, but now I have another problem.
A 22 minute file, which was 360MB before converting, turned into a 6.2GB file after converting.
Since I use videoclips from a TV Serie, which has over 60 episodes, this is going to cost a lot of space. Is there any way to reduce the filesize without destroying the video quality, or is there any, ANY, way to make FCP accept .mp4 files?
I don't care if it slows down my Mac or anything, it's just that I know it's possible, with the 700MB file from one of my posts above.

• ITunes will not import mp4-files.

For some reason iTune will not import mp4-files into iTunes. The files only contain audio, no video. I know that mp4 is a format that combines the two.
The files were generated in an earlier version of iTunes, like in 2006 or something. They were imported from CD's. I can locate them just fine on my computer and they play without problem in Windows Media Player.
The problem is that when I try to import them the way that iTunes want me to import files its like they don't exist. ITunes locates the folders and sub-folders, but its like there's no content in the folders...
I've tried changing my import settings but nothing seems to help...
Have any of you encountered a similar problem, could you fix it and how?
I've contacted Apple-support but they were unable (incompetent) to assist me...
To me it seems like the only option left is to convert all the files, like 2 GB, from mp4 to mp3.
Thankful for any help I could get solving this ***** of an issue...
//Magnus

iTunes can handle just about any file format that works with QuickTime and will play any file purchased or downloaded from the iTunes Store. If you've got video files that end with a .mov, .m4v, or .mp4 file extension, you can import them to iTunes with ease. However, the video especially the MP4 video must meet the following specifications: it must be encoded as 540 kbit/s (minimum) MPEG-4 video (H.264) with an approximately 128 kbit/s AAC audio track or encoded as 1.5 Mbit/s (minimum) MPEG-4 video (H.264) with a minimum 128 kbit/s AAC audio track. If not, you will fail to import MP4 to iTunes.
Even if your MP4 files meet the above specifications and are added to iTunes successfully, it may still fail to sync to iOS devices. For iPhones, iPads, and video-capable iPods play videos in more specific video formats and codecs.

• How to import .mp4 file?

I'm trying to import mp4 files. Here is an example:
http://jeffareid.net/misc/nfsshiftdemo.mp4

I don't understand how. The files are stored as MP4 files at YouTube; how could you "download" a format different from the MP4 format the video is stored in at YouTube?
You'll have to ask this of the various services. I do not know. I do not use any, as I do not edit files from YouTube. Others, apparently do, and use these various services. Matter of fact, I try to avoid editing any material that is in a delivery format like the plague, or the swine flu. Quality always suffers more than I am comfortable with.
The process I have is working, the problem I experiences was with a few initial frames of the video I downloaded, using another MP4 tool, it reported this error. Now I know what to look for if it happens again.
So long as the process works, then I'd definitely use it. It's when it doesn't work, that you'd have to look for a cure. Again, I'm not sure what that cure would be, as I do not work with any material from YouTube. If a client wished for me to do so, and had full written approval and a release from the original producer, I'd tell them to get the original footage from that producer and we could edit it. That would certainly be a better path, and one that you might wish to explore. Besides covering all of the legal aspects, it would get you much closer to the "source."
Good luck,
Hunt

• IMovie Won't Import MP4 Files

For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos.  Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960.  For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format.  They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto).  When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.  And actually, it seems that just about no video files at all on my computer can be added (all greyed out)--even other MP4 files.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip but that says "unrecognized file format" when I try opening the videos.  I also installed Perian and rebooted.
In case it helps:
- I have an Intel MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 with iLife '11
- QuickTime info for the video format says "H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions; AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz"
- VLC says "Stream 0 (Video) - Codec: avc1" and "Stream 1 (Audio) - Codec: mp4a"
Any ideas?  This is incredibly frustrating!

Why iMovie Won't Import MP4 Files?
Technically, iMovie does import MP4 video. However, iMovie only import MP4 files that are encoded with MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC data. And yet, MP4 is a video container format that may contain various audio and video codec (and sometimes even subtitle streams included). If the MP4 file is not encoded with iMovie support codec, iMovie will refuse to import this kind of MP4 video.
How to Solve Can't Import MP4 into iMovie?
In order to successfully import all kinds of MP4 files to iMovie, a recommended solution is to convert iMovie unrecognized MP4 to iMovie supported video format.
iDealshare VideoGo is just the right MP4 to iMovie Converter which can convert various MP4 to iMovie supported MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MOV or DV. Besides converting MP4 to iMovie, iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert other video formats including AVI, WMV, MPEG, VOB, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, M2T, M2TS, TOD, MOD, XAVC, FLV, MKV, SWF, 3GP, MVI, ASF and etc to iMovie video format.

• Problems importing .mov file

I am all of a sudden having problems importing .mov files from my camera in iPhoto '08. Can't get them to import in Image Capture either...On the import preview screen, all that comes up are empty "boxes". If I highlight one of the boxes, it shows that it is .mov file, the size of the file, etc. but if i try to do the import, iPhoto just locks up.

iPhoto does not like very large movie files for importing directly from the camera. If you get it on the desktop you should be able to import it. I've imported 200MB movies with no problem.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

• Im having problems importing prores files at correct frame rate

im having problems importing prores files at correct frame rate. they have been converted to prores at 25fps but on importing they appear in fcp as 30fps. any help would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about Wondershare. But it seems something may have got messed up in the conversion. Or maybe there is an identifier on the converted clip that has FCP confused and it really is 25 fps.
To begin, your sequence settings don't match your clips. You want a Pro Res sequence. Let FCP set this automatically by dragging a Pro Res to an empty sequence and when gives you a message asking whether you want the sequence to match the clips, click yes. Then hit command 0 again and see whether the frame rate is set at 30 or 25.
If it really is 30, then it will need to be converted and re-imported. It can be done in Compressor or in Cinema Tools. If you have used Cinema Tools before, great. Of not, I'll defer to others because it's been a while and I don't want to mess you up.
Good luck.

Have AE7; Problem importing prproj file into pc; get placeholder instead. What do I need to do to open up the video files here. They are .mov in quicktime.

Please be more specific. What Premiere project? What version of Premiere? Which operating system? What CoDecs do the QT fiels use? Are all the video files in the correct folders inside the Premiere project structure? Your description sounds like you are attempting to open a Mac based project on a PC and your video files are either in the wrong location or use a Mac-specific CoDec, hence they cannot be read on a PC.
