Problem importing photos into LR1 library (Mac).
I just downloaded the trial copy to see if I would like LR1 better than Aperture and I can't seem to be able to add photos or folders to an existing library. The only options I have when importing (from existing folder, CD, CF card, etc.) are:
"Import Photos at their Current Location"
"Copy photos to a new location and Import"
"Move photos to a new location and Import"
"Move photos as Digital Negative (DNG) and Import"
I believe I *should* have an option to add to the library (I've seen screenshots of it).
So as a test, I added a folder of images manually (from the import window), restarted, launched Lightroom and the folder was gone (even though it's still in the "Lightroom" folder where the database is.
I've tried to create different libraries, held the option key while launching, looked at the preferences, in the forums, help files, etc. to no avail.
I've also tried installing it on my MacBook Pro and PowerMac G5 ( 10.4.8 ) also to no avail. Removed it and re-installed. I don't understand.
Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure I understand your question, since I don't recall the screenshot you mention. However, I like to add photos to my library w/o creating a new folder, too.
Here's an example of how I do this with my Nikon photos:
1. I already have some photos in my library. One folder is labeled Nikon, where I put my D80 photos (all of them, so far).
2. When I hook my camera/memory card to the computer, I manually drag the images to that folder on my drive called "Nikon". This is the same folder I have imported into LR previously.
3. Start LR, Select "Import", and migrate to and select that same folder ("Nikon", in my case).
4. LR will tell you that it is not importing certain files, because they're already in the library. Click OK and LR will import the other, new files into the same "Nikon" folder (in my example).
Voila! ..no new folders in LR, just more photos.:)
Obviously, I've set LR's preferences to "Do nothing" when a memory card/camera is detected.
If I missed your point, sorry for the distraction.

Problem importing photos to iPhoto Library from flash drive
When I try to import photos from flash drive into iPhoto library, they seem to import just fine. BUT if I close iPhoto and then return later, the photos I supposedly imported from the flash drive are not in the Library, and a screen prompt tells me the "source is not available". Photos import into Library from digital camera just fine. Why are the photos from my flash drive not staying in the Library? Kinda defeats the purpose of a Library if images won't stay in it. Please help!
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management. -
I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto ties to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files. Big problem. What to do?
Simple:
File -> Export to get your photos out of the iPhoto Library. In the Export dialogue you can set the kind to Original and you'll get back exactly what you put in.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Once exported, you can then trash the iPhoto Library - just drag it from the Pictures Folder to the trash and empty it.
After that, if you're entirely neurotic about it, just put the iPhoto app in the trash and empty it.

thanks for the reply. would you please tell me how to check for the folder to have write permission. I have done the same settings as before but this time does not transfer. It says can not read files with a code "298". I can see the thumbnails on the screen prior to trying to import the photos, also can see them with the card in the camera and using the view mode. I have up to date camera raw 7.4 for my Nikon D7100 and the settings allow for 7.1 and above

Problem importing pictures into lightroom 5.4 on a Mac.
I have lighroom 5.4 on a Mac and I am having some trouble importing pictures into my library on lightroom. The other day I was trying to import some from another folder in my computer and the files were showing up empty (although they were not). And today I was trying to import from an SD card and I was having the same problem. I shoot in raw on a Nikon. So what can I do to fix this problem?
This is what it looks like when I try to importAsk in the LR forum and provide exact technical info - "I shot raw on Nikon" and "on a Mac" is not.

I import photos into lightroom and they appear just fine and then after 'developing' some disappear from the library though they still exist in the previous import window

Trying to import photos into Lightroom 5 isn't working
I am trying to import photos into my lightroom 5 catalog and it isn't working. Done this MANY times before and this time nothing. Tried importing directly from memory card and copying the files to the hard drive both just start the process and it never moves. Even tried putting the files in the folder I was going to use and then selected to Sync the folder. Lightroom recognized the 203 times in that folder... but nothing. Just sits there.
Using Lightroom on the Mac, importing JPG and a few AVI files. Tried single JPG (that I could open in preview) but nothing...
Any help would be appreciated!Seems like this is related to specific files. If I make a new folder with only certain files it works. But seeming like it is more then a handful. Really painful, because once it has the issue you need to close lightroom, then lightroom needs to be forced to quit... it doesn't close cleanly.....

I have a display problem when I try to import photos into Lightroom.
I use the version 5.2.
The problem can be viewed in the following video.
At the begining you can view that there is something weird as under the folder "Panoramas" there is a grey block where there should be the rest of the folders onmy disk.
Then, I try to select a folder on my disk MacHD or SaveSSD and everything is ok.
And when I come back on my disk MacSSD, everything is going wrong (it begins when I click on "Panoramas").
Any idea how to fix this ?My video was just to illustrate the display problem.
As I said before I had it when I import from my SD card. My common workflow is importing from the SD card to the MacSSD disk, with a renaming. That's why I choose copy and not just Add to the catalog.
By the way, I had another strange thing. In the Folders on the left side of the Library module I got 2 times the same name (folder "2013").
I right-clicked and refesh folder, LR asked me to merge the both folder "2013" and it somehow seems to solve the import problem.

How do you import photos from a library on an external drive to the current library running in iPhoto? I have a few different pictures in each library and would like to have all my pictures in both libraries. The library on the external drive is my backup. I would appreciate any help.
Depends on exactly what you want to do.
Just move some of the Photos? FIle -> Export from one and export the shots to the Finder. Then import them to the other.

Move the photos and all versions and metadata: use iPhoto Library Manager it's the only way to do this while preserving everything. Merge two Libraries into one?
If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager -

I am getting the following error message when I try to import photos into iPhoto from my camera: "/private/var/folders/GB/GBl4wh8-ELqUVMI5dO-ryU TI/-Tmp-/iPhoto/DSCF2033.JPG". Have already tried removing and reinstalling iPhoto to no avail.
Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?
If you open Image Capture > Preferences is iPhoto selected as the choice when a camera is connected? -
Can't import photos into iPhoto
I have a Sony DSC W5 digital camera. For five years I have been able to import photos from the Sony camera into iPhoto. In the last two days I can no longer import photos into iPhoto. I get an "unrecognizable file" prompt. I can drag the photo files onto the Finder and view them there. The photo on the Finder has a .jpg suffix just as all the other photos in iPhoto. Anybody got an idea on how to solve this problem? Thank you.
get the photos off of the card and reformat the card using the camera format command
Can you import the photos from disk once you have moved them from the camera to the disk? If not try opening one preview and saving as to create a new file and import that

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?

With using any version of iTunes, whenever I import songs into my library using the "add to library" function, iTunes adds those songs in songs' alphabetical order. This is pretty annoying since it does not preserve the logical track number or even the album sort order (for example when adding 2 albums stored in a unique folder). Anyone has any ideas ? Been stumped for a while....!!!
hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music' then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo
