Problem importing pics

Hello - I have a 20" imac - running leopard with everything up to date.
I just got a canon sd750 digi camera and my 1st import to i photo of 7 pics resulted in 7 thumbs that looked like tv static and when I tried to display the pics, only 4 would show up, then closed i photo and re- opened and only 2 pics would open, then only 1.
So after reading a few posts on here, I decided to try re-building the thumbs by closing/ opening i photo with command/option held down. What this accomplished was that when I re-opened i photo all my pics were gone. What is going on? It seems everytime I turn around I am having some sort of problem with i photo.
I have recovered all my pics into my i photo lib. except I got a error message for about 999 pics. Could not import. wrong file ext. It'd almost like i photo is changing the ext. on it's own, and then it doesn't like it.
I don't know what is going on.
Ryan

What's going on is that you have a damaged database file - this can be caused by something like a recent crash or force quit.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Problems importing pics to iphoto

I'm working on a slideshow and I'm having trouble importing some photos to iphoto. I've followed the instructions by going to "add to library" on iphoto, I've selected the pic files but I get an edit that says "Unreadable Files: 17 the following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
The files are jpg or tiff that was emailed to me and I retrieved from the internet.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Steven,
I have had a similar problem. I get the same message as you. it all began when I installed Canon Eos viewer Utility and Canon file utility for my digital shots. I could not import them to I-photo and soon afterwards I lost the ability to work with I-photo. I cannot download i-photo 6 because I-photo 5 is not recognised. Any similarities to your problem?

  • Iphoto 9.1.5 problems importing pics into Iphoto

Since I upgraded my Iphoto 11 to 9.1.5 from the app store, I cannot import any pics into Iphoto.  The program hangs with beach ball spinning and I have to force quit the application!!!!!

    What make of camera?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Problems importing - cannot connect

    Hi
Im having problems importing pics into iPhoto .. basically my library worked fine up til recently. I house my photos on a PC server and use iPhoto to organize them by importing them over my wifi network. This worked fine until I recently renamed my wifi for unrelated reasons.. now, I cannot view a pic full size within iPhoto as it tries to connect to 192.168.0.2 (the PC) and cannot. Now, this address is fine, I can manually connect to a server, so i'm wondering if iPhoto has some hidden logon settings somewhere?
To complicate matters further, eve if i store photos locally on the mac HD they fail to import with the same "connection failed..." error - even though it should not be going to the network folder!
    Help!
    Jon

I house my photos on a PC server and use iPhoto to organize them by importing them over my wifi network.
So you were running a Referenced Library where the files are not copied to the Library on import? In this scenario iPhoto makes an alias to the actual location of the files. Unfortunately aliases are very limited and once the path to the files changes - especially when the files are on different volume - you're going to have trouble.
Some folks have had success using an app like [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy> to reattach broken aliases, however, I've no idea as to its capabilities across a wireless network to an PC server.
I suspect the problem importing is also related to the same problem. When iPhoto imports a pic it does a Duplicate Check against files already in the Library and if it cannot connect to them well then it cannot do the check, and then it won't import.
A simple test will confirm (or undermine) my suspicion: create a new Library (Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library') and see if you can import to it.
Bluntly, iPhoto's abilities to run Referenced Libraries across volumes are poor. I wouldn't use it in that scenario. For the set up you describe Aperture is a much more robust option.

  • Importing pics from my device to my computer

    Hi Everyone,
I have had my Tour 9630 for years and never had a problem importing pics until yesterday. I can see the pics I want to import on my phone but when I connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Software, they don't show up in the "Pictures" tab under "Media Sync" I get the following message, "There are no pictures to import from your device"
Also, when I connect the USB cable from the phone to the Tour, I also get this message, "Do you want to turn on Mass Storage Mode? You might not be able to access some media files in this mode" This is the first time that I have seen this message.
One last item, I went to Wal-Mart on Sunday (24 MAR) and using my micro card in their machine, printed one pic. This is where I believe my problem started because it seems the Desktop Software can read the micro card any more. Can anyone out there get me back to the point where I can import my pics again using the BlackBerry Desktop Software? Also, is there a USB type device out there that I can insert my micro card into and download my pics until I resolve this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    1Lonewolf
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I can't tell you why the Desktop Software stopped working for you...I personally never use it for that purpose at all. Rather, I use Mass Storage Mode, which allows me to treat my BB as a USB drive (2 drives, if there is a media card in the BB) from my Windows computer...allowing me to drag/drop all files that I desire to/from the BB in any manner I choose.
If you want to pursue that, refer:

There are many types of USB SD card readers available for computers. Some are large devices, internally installed into the PC. Others are an adapter with a USB plug on one end, and an SD Card Slot on the other. And there are many variations in between. You should shop for a USB SD Card reader device and choose the one that best meets your needs for price and capability.
    Good luck!

  • Problem importing photos in Aperture

Having problem importing pics from finder into Aperture. When I click import and follow the path to the folder holding pics, "processing" icon spins briefly but nothing appears on screen. Folder holds at most 100 pics so I don't think thats the problem. Problem has occurred in the past but usually clears after several attempts - not this time.

Shift-command-4 will bring up the screen saver crosshairs. Place the mouse over the Aperture window and press the space bar the crosshairs turninto a camera (this will take a shot of the whole window it is over)  then click the mouse.

    Hi Hal!
Thank you so, so much for your reply!
    Thats make sense.
Today I'm away from home, but tomorrow I'll check it, but I think this will solve my problem and I will be able to work comfortably.
However, such large temp files should not be normal... you confirm? (temp file after viewed a few (20-50) photos can be more than 10 GB.)
Best regards and again - thank you Hal!

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

  • Problems importing photos with a color label.

    Hello:
I'm trying to import photos and assign a color label at the same time. My idea is to know what pics are just imported and put they into "status 0" of my workflow, that is, the pic is just imported and need to be accepted/rejected, then be classified, then made basic corrections, etc, etc. I'm going to change color labels to go from red to green status... a tipical workflow.
OK, this is what I did:
    Import pics:
    * I select the directory and create/assign a new metadata preset.
    * In this metadata preset I set author/creator and some other IPTC fields.
    * Also I put the word "red" in Label field.
    * Do the import...
    What I can see then:
The photos are imported and the red label is visible. You can see the red label in the grid view (at every photo's bottom) and also, at the bottom toolbar, you can see that the red label is checked. If you click at the small label at the photo's bottom you can see the small menu with the red label checked.
OK, it seems that the color label is imported but...
In the filmstring, if you filter to see only the red labeled pics... nothing is selected !! You have to unassign and assign again the red label and this time you can filter by color label.
What is happening ? Does Lightroom read the color label from two different fields from the metadata ? Is something not synched during the import process ?
    Regards,
    Javier.

Sorry if I couldn't explain correctly. English is not my main language...
I know you can assign names to the existing colors label and create different sets. I just create my own set.
What I'm refering to is to the Label field that is part of the basic IPTC data into a metadata preset. I'm not sure if it's the same field that is used to assign color labels.
What I did was to create a metadata preset, assign the word "red" as the value of the IPTC Label field and then apply this preset into an import. All the pics were imported with the red label set, so yes, it is possible to do the import and set the color label. The problem is that you can't use the filters that are into the filmstring view. So there is some mismatch here: the red color is shown at the bottom of the pics imported, but the filmstring filters can't "see" that the pics have this color label assigned.

  • Imported pics are not saved

    I'm using iPhoto 11 version 9.15.
Since a few weeks iPhoto is not saving my imported pics anymore. Each time I'm importing my pics from my iPhone or my SD card it seems to be ok. But after I restart iPhoto the next time all the pics are lost. And I have to import them again. Luck for me that I didn't delete them on the card or iPhone.
I looked at the apple support page, but I couldn't find any software updates.
Anyone an idea what the problem could be? I'm pretty new in the apple world, and don't have much experience in the mac system.
    Thx for your help

  • Can't import pic's when I save my movie to an external drive

    Hi,
When my Movie is saved to my Macintosh HD I can import pic's with no problem from iPhoto through the media pane in iMovie. Then when I save the movie file to my external HD (becasue these movie files get so big) I can't import pic's anymore. The import files dialogue box shows up, then the pic flashes in the timeline for a split second and then it disappears, or it will show up in the timeline as an all black image, but no pic. It must be something to do with my external HD, but what? Are movie files in iMovie usually saved to external drives with no problems, or is this a common occurence? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Dylan
PS. I have the latest version of iMovie HD

    Hey Sue,
Thanks for the reply. The external drive is formatted MS-DOS File System (FAT32). I had to do this because I had problems with it at first when I was using it interchangeably with a Mac and a PC. When it was Mac formatted it wouldn't be compatible with my PC for some reason (or I could read files, but couldn't write - something like that). Any suggestions?
    Thanks again,
    Dylan

  • Lightroom 4 automatically applies presets to all imported pics - How to deactivate that?

    Hello
When I'm importing pics in Lightroom 4 (no matter if RAW or JPEG files) all picture get automatically convertet into B/W and some grain etc. is added - I guess an preset (BW Nr 4) is applied automatically to EVERY pic I'm opening.
How could I solve that problem?

In the <Import Dialog> on the right side in the panel <Apply during Import> make sure that <None> is selected.
If you only see the small Import Dialog you have to expand it to see <Apply during import> by clicking on the small triangle in the bottom left corner of the dialog box.
