Problem importing still photos from digital camera. Any help please?

I wanted to put together a little Premier Pro CS5 project using 20 stills from my Sony digital camera. When I go through the various options to import them
into my project (Import, Import through Bridge, etc) I get 20 different file names in the Project panel but instead of 20 different photos (as expected) I have 20 copies of the same photograph.
Wow, that is frustrating. The closest item in the support logs I could find was this one (see below), but that work around is both over my head and very time consuming.

I found another discussion along these same lines and it appears that no solution has been found.
I hope I am not asking too much of my $1,000 software program to say, "Please pull in these 20 pics so I can work with them in the timeline." I just want to hit import and go.
I am using a Win7 computer with a Sony camera taking 3 mega-pixel shots. Again, all looks to be going well (all 20 filenames in project panel are different) but when those files are opened they are all the same picture.
I've rebooted, opened and close PrPro, tried renaming the pics from the standard dsc123.jpg convention to something else - all to no avail. I would find it hard to believe that a program this powerful could struggle with such a simple chore - am I doing something incorrect?

More info about the issue. This is also a hit-and-miss error, as once you find a way that will appear to work and you say to yourself, "Finally! I figured it out!"
But once you go to the next photo to pull it in and get on with your project you find that you are pulling in multiple copies of the same picture as the one
you just pulled in.
This same problem occurs if you attempt to import using the Media Browser, and as an interesting footnote, the Media Browser window has a drop down
list. When you click each of your different file names, there it is - the same picture. I've invested 1.5 hours in attempting to find a work-around by importing, renaming, saving, right-clicking, using context menus - everything my 43 years of computer use can muster - but still no luck.
The last time that I created a project similar to this (a mix of video and stills) it worked just fine so that is even more of a head-scratcher for me.
I even went back and re-imported the pics that worked fine into the project that I am struggling with and they came in fine - no duplication. But vacation pics are the only copies I have and I just need to import these 20 shots and get to work on them.
I would be willing to let someone get my IP address and connect directly like my IT folks at work do so they could see what is going on with this.

More than a question, this is a suggestion to the Apple developers of the iPhoto software. There are two options or tools I would really appreciate to have in my iPhoto version 5.0.4
1. Ability to import selected photos from my digital camera or memory card reader.
2. Ability to select the albums I want to burn to a CD or DVD.
I hope you can include these basic functions to your well appreciated iPhoto software.
If any Apple Discussions Member agree with this request, please join me asking Apple for these useful tools.

There may be a more "elegant" solution, but you can do it manually.
1) Go to the finder. Look for the mounted Camera (the Camera mounts just like your drive, DVD, or Disk Image). You can find this on the Desktop or in list of volumes on the left side of any window. My Camera mounts as "NO NAME".
2) Double Click the Camera "Volume". Keep Double Clicking (Opening folders) until you get to the picture images.
3) Select the ones you want to Add/Import to iPhoto.
4) Drag these on the iPhoto Icon in your Dock or in the iPhoto window, which will perform the import.

Can't figure out how to use the sd port on my macbook to imports photos from my camera?

Take the SD card from the camera and put it into the sd port.
Open the software you use to manage photos and open the card....
Or copy the photos from the card to the HD.

HT201302 I imported the photos from my camera rool to my computer and deleted the majority of them from my iPhone 5, however it still is telling me i have a large amount on the camera roll. Why isn't the size reduced?

If you have photo stream set up, that can take up a large amount of room, so check that too. And videos take up much more space than photos.

Importing sound formats from Digital Cameras

I know this is partly covered elsewhere, but if anyone comes up with a way to import video shot on digital cameras and then saved on iPhoto, please let me know. I have a wonderful Casio Exlim S880, that outputs Quicktime movies direct, but with DVI ADPCM audio -- which iMovie '08 simply rejects. Speaking to Casio engineers in Japan, they rightly see it as Apple's problem.
I know I can convert these movies using iSquint, QT Pro, or iTunes, but to do this over a lot of files is a pain. It SHOULD be possible in iMovie. This major problem aside, I'd be happy with iMovie's lower level capabilities.

Not only are we dealing with apples and oranges here, we're dealing with two entirely different philosophies and reasons for existence!

Camera manufacturers are just that: camera manufacturers. They earn their money by selling cameras; making them simple and efficient to use, pretty to look at, and - as Jon says - they aim to "store video in the smallest space possible while retaining reasonable quality". They don't really give a hoot what you do with the video after you've shot it.
..Like Kodak, when their main business was making film: you buy (or bought) the film ..but what you actually used it for (scientific recording, family snaps, wildlife photography, cataloguing postage stamps) they didn't care about.
Apple, on the other hand, doesn't make cameras (though they used to sell some of the first digital snapshot cameras, and the standalone iSight). Their - intangible - product is "ease of use".
That's what Apple sells: "buy our products, and we'll make portable music easy to use; we'll make photo-manipulation easy; we'll make web-browsing easy; we'll make electronic mail easy; we make everything to do with computers easy; we'll make video editing easy".
The camera manufacturers aren't necessarily talking to Apple ..the camera manufacturers go off on their own route, trying to give their individual products Unique Selling Points so that people will buy theirs in preference to another manufacturer's.
They aim to cram as much data as possible into the smallest (physical or virtual) space possible, add pretty design, long battery life, low price, reasonable reliability (so that they don't have to take back faulty devices) with a high profit margin. They want to get their items to market as soon as possible.
They don't want to consult with people in other industries (Apple, in the "ease of use" business), they just want to get their product on shelves.
(..In the case of Sony, and HDV video, there was some involvement with Apple, so that Sony could reassure users - primarily pro and semi-pro users - that the material they shot really could be edited. But miniDV pioneers JVC never bothered with that. And Sony never bothered talking with Apple, I believe, about Sony's "consumer-oriented" microMV format..)
Polaroid, uniquely, never needed anyone else: their film developed by itself, so you didn't need to go to a developing lab to get your pictures done (..though they had other hardware partners; Eumig, for instance, made their Polavision movie hardware). Other camera manufacturers sold cameras, but (apart from Kodak or Fuji-branded cameras) the film developing was always done by a somebody else - you bought a Konica or Olympus or Pentax or Nikon or Canon or Leica or Hanimex or You-Name-It camera; then you bought some film from someone quite different (Agfa, Orwo, Kodak, Ilford, Fuji); then took your pics, then took the film to a third outfit to have the material developed ..the camera manufacturers were far removed from the eventual picture-development process. Kodak introduced new films and new development techniques ..but camera makers were generally uninterested in that; their gaze was on f/stops, lens materials, shutter timing, new materials for camera bodies.
And so it's been with video: camera makers have bought and used chips, lenses, tape transport mechanisms, microphones, and assembled them into their own products, with their own arrangements of sockets, buttons and battery placement and cosmetic designs.
Then they've devised, or licensed, new methods for compressing video, so that more can be crammed into smaller storage, with fewer moving parts, making things cheaper and simpler to build.
The "unravelling" of that compressed audio and video for editing - as distinct from simply plugging a camera into a display for replay - has generally not been the camera manufacturers' worry.
One more analogy: car makers assemble cars. It's generally not been their worry about how roads are made; optimum camber-angles on bends, and coping with surface water run-off, and grading the gravel and asphalt mix for optimum adhesion.
You can't use a car without a surface to drive it on. But I don't think that Toyota and Tarmac devise their products in collaboration with each other.
Camera manufacturers make hardware to pile onto shelves and to sell to people who want some equipment in their hands.
Apple sells an experience: "ease of use". They generally have to react to what the hardware manufacturers are putting on the market ..except when they devise the hardware themselves, as with iPods, iPhones, display screens and Apple TVs. And, of course, Mac computers. By devising and selling both the hardware and the software, they make Macs, iPods and iPhones "easy to use".
But when someone else makes the hardware, and they're constantly changing it, and messing about with the new features, and Apple wants to provide that missing "ease of use" capability, then Apple can't always keep up with new developments as fast as customers would like.
Check the interoperability before you buy! Think what you're buying: are you buying the hardware, or are you hoping to buy the fun and useful experience?
If it's the experience; does the manufacturer provide that experience, or are you likely to need a third-party to provide it ..as with film developing, audio and video processing and editing, having decent roads to drive on, having the right sea-state to sail on?
If it's an experience you're after ..check the whole train of interlocking 'components' before committing yourself and your cash.

AAAARGGHH - I posted to grumble about the "new" iTunes, [which is still a load of garbage], but cos 100s of people feel the same too, my mailbox is FULL of threads to the post.
I have reset my e-mail preferences to NO for ALL notifications, with a conspicuos lack of success. So i use a junk filter to stop them, but I ain't pleased. Can anyone explain how I can get the system to work right [I know, I can guess what you are thinking, expaecting anything from Apple to be user friendly is a long shot.... but at least on can try!]

Problem loading photos from digital camera

Hi - I've looked at the various posts on this topic but none of them seems to match the problem I'm having. I simply cannot get my Macbook to import photos from my Kodak camera. I get a few pictures to import, but the rest just appear as dotted line frames. There's nothing wrong with the camera - I can import them to my husband's Macbook no problem. So what's with mine I wonder? I'd be really grateful for some advice. Thanks.

Hmmm, after I read my own post I realized that there was something I could try. I took the memory card out of the Easyshare Kodak V550 and put it in the Kodak Playsport, then connected the playsport to my mac. When iPhoto launched it showed all the photo thumbnails on the SD card and had dotted outlines for all the videos. I chose to Import All and it worked fine.
I then took the SD card out of the Playsport, put it in the Easyshare and formatted it on the camera. I then took one photo and one video and plugged the Easyshare into the mac.
I saw in iPhoto the complete photo thumbnail but only dotted lines around the video. When I tried to Import All I got the error that there was a problem downloading a file. When I tried to import only the photo, I got the error that the file, "100123.JPG" was in an unrecognizable format. So something is happening in the communication between the camera and the software. The SD card is fine and can be read. The camera WAS working prior to a software update.

Problem importing "still" images from DV tape

(Setup: iMovie 9, OS X 10.58, Pansonic NV-GS250)
Hello everyone,
I m trying to solve the following problem:
I need to edit (fades, overdub etc.) a movie which has been mastered by someone else.
The DV tape I am trying to import has a lot of "still" sequences that were generated as follows:
- The source DV tape was paused while the target (master) DV recorder was recording e.g. for five seconds.
This works fine on the resulting DV tape: The paused frame from the source tape is shown e.g. for five secs, then the next "real" clip is shown seamlessly.
However, upon import from the camera/master tape, iMovie discards these pseudo-still images: They show up as 0 kB files in the event folder.
This happens both with manual and automatic import.
I do not have access to the source material, i.e. the raw tapes and clips that were used this way. This means I cannot "rebuild" these discarded clips.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem - i.e. have iMovie recognize these clips that are actually paused source material?
Or is this something that would require Final Cut? Or may a third-party tool? I would send a few bucks if necessary.

thank you for replying, but I probably didn't describe the problem properly ...
You suggest dragging a clip from the event into the project and then creating a Still Frame from it.
I cannot do this because iMovie will not import these clips *at all* - i.e., they are not physically present on the Mac although they show up on screen during import.
Here is what happens:
- Let's say I have three clips on my Digital Video Tape:
- the first is a short, "real" scene,
- the second was generated by pausing the source camcorder and recording this paused frame on the master camcorder for a few seconds
- the third is another "real" scene.
The resulting DV master tape (which I am working with) plays back properly on the camcorder: scene 1, scene 2 (a paused frame), scene 3.
When importing this into iMovie, I end up with these files in iMovie's event folder:
"clip-2009-07-02 01;55;37.dv" 34 MB
"clip-2009-07-02 01;56;10.dv" 0KB <-
"clip-2009-07-02 05;51;26.dv" 21 MB
I.e, iMovie discards these clips upon import - so there is nothing to generate a still frame from.
So I need to get around the import problem.
Even a third-party tool for importing such "paused still frame" clips from a DV tape would help. I just need to get them onto the Mac HD.

Want to select photos from digital camera to upload

Hi,
I like keeping a number of pictures on my camera instead of erasing them everytime I transfer them on to my computer. As a result, it takes forever for iPhoto to go through the 700 pictures on my camera to pick up the 2 new ones that I want to put on the computer. (Selecting 'do not import duplicates' does not speed the process.) Is there a way I can do this more quickly? On other computers, you can just click on the camera icon and select the new photos, and upload those. Any tips or suggestions?

iPhoto doesn't provide enough control of the import process to select individual photos. You can use another application called Image Capture that comes with MacOS X. Image capture will only capture to the hard drive so you'll have to separately import the photos into iPhoto and then delete them (if you want) because iPhoto will copy them into the library.
With your camera or memory card connected, open Image Capture. If iPhoto automatically starts and asks if you want to import, just ignore it. You can quit iPhoto for now or Hide it if you want. Bring Image Capture to the front. There should be a window with the name of your device (camera or memory reader) in the title bar.
The first popup menu is Download To: Note what it says or click it and choose Other... to download to another folder.
Click the "Download Some..." button and you'll see a preview window with thumbnails of what's on your camera/memory card. Select the ones you want. Then click Download. The selected photos will download to the hard drive.
Import the new photos into iPhoto either using iPhoto's Import menu command or drag and drop them from the Finder onto iPhoto's main window. After iPhoto imports them, you can delete the ones from the Finder.
BTW, you can set your Mac to automatically open Image Capture instead of iPhoto when you connect your Camera/memory card. This must be done in Image Capture's Preferences. Open Preferences and in the General tab select which application you want in the first popup menu.
Another way that's shorter if your camera mounts as a disk drive when you connect it is to find the photos you want directly from the camera's memory in the resulting Finder window and drag and drop directly into iPhoto's main window. After they import, eject your camera's disk icon before disconnecting it. You may need to switch the Finder view to column in order to see a thumbnail of each photo unless you know by the file names which ones you want.

Question about Imported AVI movies from Digital Cameras

I use a Canon "Ixus" series digital camera., the video clips on this camera are AVI (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions).,
My problem is saving edits i do to these video clips in the in the same original format when opening them in QT, unlike photos Qt makes you save AS instead of saving modifications to the original file.
Again, if Qt does not allow you to save the edits to the clip itself but rather asks you what you want to save it as, and i can not find the same exact QT which is "AVI" (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions)., then what is the correct format to avoid any loss in quality?
Can anyone advise?

i just have to rotate these clips, they where shot sideways.
I understand - however, video is a horizontal format; when you rotate your file 90 degrees either the 640 vertical dimension must shrink to 480 pixels which will leave black borders on each side of the image or you expand the 480 horizontal dimension of your clip to 640 pixels and you crop of the top and bottom of your image.

Can't download photos from digital camera after latest software update

Hi,
since the latest update on the 28.9.08 I have trouble downloading photos from my Canon Eos 400D. I can't use "Digitale Bilder" anymore, nor Adobe Bridge Photo Downloader or iPhoto. I have to use my partners MacBook that doesn't have the update yet. Could it have something to do with the RAW-Compatibility-Update? And does Apple know and do something about it?
Or can I fix this myself?
I'd appreciate help.

Same here... I have a Powershot Elph340HS and a SD960IS, I've updated Canon ImageBrowser and CamaraWindow and it just says "no camera detected"... so I used a different usb to make sure it wasn't that, I've tried everything, Preview, iPhoto, even iMovie... all of which worked before for importing from my cameras...

Can't import new photos into lightroom 4, any help?

I have macbook pro, a external HD with all my RAW files in a folder called 2013, I imported edited and export 2 photos into the same external folder, using lightoroom 4. Now I wanted import the others but they all grey out and there's no import button to import, any ideia what's i'm doing wrong?

Take my apologize for the delay doceddy. This issue is 90 percent permissions related. But one thing is confusing in this. If it would be permission issue it should not affect for example the desktop folder. .
Testing:
1 / Create a floder TEST on the desktop.
2/ Use the transfer method which you normally to download the rwas from your cam. Put few raws into the TEST folder.
3/ Run Lightroom and try to import those in TEST.
4/ If it does not work: highlight the test folder - right click - properties - check if there is read only attribute.
5/ If it so - try to put the blue marker from this box away and click apply.
6/ After this close the dialogue (the operation will run some small time). Then do it again if your system allowed you to apply the change. So second time should be the attribut away. If it is start Lightroom and try to import again from TEST.
7/ Give me some feedback then please - I will suggest you some other steps if it does not work.

IPhoto won't download videos from my camera! Help please!

I have a Samsung WB250F camera and my Mac has been downloading videos and pictures fine until today! I put my card in and only some of the videos will download. I have two clips that won't. They aren't long, one is 4 minutes and the other is 5 minutes. I've deleted all other videos that were in my iphoto and that didn't work. Everytime I push import a message comes up that says "Error downloading image. iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image"
It's starting to get VERY frustrating.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Your friend is correct; iPhoto 2 does not handle video files. You'll need at least iPhoto 5 to keep videos in your library. There is no other way to get it than to purchase a copy of iLife, either version 5 or version 6. Upgrades from one version to another cost money, updates within a version (ex; 6.0 to 6.0.6) are free downloads from Apple.
Try using Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload the video clips to your Mac. You can manage them yourself in your Movies folder.

Importing Photos From Digital Camera

I have a Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS. Is there a way for me to import only some of the photos into iPhoto? Example, iPhoto recognizes the camera is connected, then says "Ready to import 58 items." If I only want 10 of the photos, do I have to delete the ones I don't want once they're imported, or can I select only which ones I want to import?

iPhoto has no selective import capability
1 - use image capture (in our applications folder) and down load selected photos to disk and then import to iPhoto (in the i{Photo or image capture preferences you can set image capture to be your default program when a camera is connected)
2 - Upgrade to iPhoto '08 or '09 - both allow you to select photos to import
