  • Voice Chat Applet

    Hey all,
I want to develop a voice chat applet in Java. (similar to the one used in Yahoo chat rooms). I know basic Java, but I don't know where to start in developing an applet like this. I don't know what libraries or protocols I need to be focusing on. If anyone can offer me some advice or the steps necessary to create this applet, I would be very appreciative.
    Thank you,
    Khanathor

Yeah, you would deserve thanks if
    1) I hadn't spent all day doing research.Sorry, but my mind-reading device wasn't working. So sorry that I couldn't tell that you had done that. Maybe it would have made a difference if you had done something like MENTIONING it in the first place.
    2) Your search query wasn't even what I was
requesting assistance for.Oh, sorry again for not reading your mind as to what you were looking for other than a response for basically "I don't even know where to begin".
    3) Your response didn't so clearly reflect your
arrogance. That's ok. Your post clearly reflected your lack of initiative and intelligence.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
A year old MacBook could be running OS 10.5.x (Leopard) and iChat 4.x.x
Or it could have come with Snow Leopard (10.6.x) and iChat 5.x.x if updated.
Your sepcs say that you are running Snow Leopard (10.6.4)
Can you go to the System Preferences > Security and if the Firewall is On can you go to the Advanced tab ?
IS Allow Signed Apps in use ?
If so has iChat been Added to the List ?
Also Stealth needs to be Off.
Have you allowed the ports iChat uses through your Routing device ?
Most domestic devices only have the first 1024 ports open and iChat uses ports above this figure.
If your device has it, Enable UPnP to open the ports.
Nothing in System Preferences > Sharing needs to be On (Selected) for iChat to do Screen Sharing.

Hi all. I want to make audio chat with my brother. I use iChat on my MBP. He uses Gtalk on his windows PC. The problem is that the audio icon is gray so I cannot start audio chat. Is there anyway? Can iChat make voice chat with Gtalk on windows or not? I am confused.

    HI,
You need to satisfy several things along the way
    Account type
You need to have a Jabber or Google mail Account your self.
If you have a Google Mail Account then it needs the "Talk" option Enabled in your Google account Settings ( A Facebook with "Chat" enabled is also a  valid Jabber ID to use in iChat).
    Connection Method
This is about which apps can connect to which apps for Video ro Audio to work.
iChat Video when using a Jabber account is iChat to iChat Only.
iChat connects using a process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
Jabber based Apps if they have  an A/V module connect using protocol called Jingle.
Needless to say Google do their own version of this that is written in to the web Browser Plugin that allows Video Chats (there are PC and Mac versions), and in the PC app called GoogleTalk.
However it is also not that compatible with other Jabber apps.
    See Jingle here
This claims, now, that Google had a hand in writing the Protocol.
Also in the "Clients Supporting Jingle" list many more version of Google products are mentioned with extended info. (it suggests that someone at Google has been editing the page).
Can iChat make voice chat with Gtalk on windows or not?
The specific answer to this to be clear is NO.
We are talking about different Apps (or web Browser Plugins) using different Internet Protocols that are not compatible.
The simplest thing is to get the Web Browser Plugin (However there can be issues with the  Flash Plugin)
At one time Google used Flash to do Video Chats and it would seem their Plugin is very close to this part of Flash.
See the Known Issues and the "Google Talk Plugin Disables iSight On Mac" item.
    Options
Use a Web Browser yourself with the Plugin.
Use a Flash Base Site such as MeBeam  (Flash has to be enabled in your Browser and the instructions are simple on the page)
Try to find a Jingle capable Mac Jabber Client (app) ( I have not found one).

Hello all - hopefully this is the correct place for this post. I've been trying to load a java enabled chat room, and keep getting a red X in the top left corner (java applet failed, etc).

Version 6 Update 12 (build 1.6.0_12-b04). I have visited the help section of the website in which java applet fails to load and tried all the following steps,
    1) I cleared all the temp files from the internet options.
    2) cleared the cache in the java plug-in
    3) disabled the pop-up blocker
insipite of the above steps the problem still persists..

    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Audio format problem...how to change in FCE?

We're capturing footage to FCE from a ZR800 Canon Camcorder. After each capture we get an error message that our audio sample rate does not match the audio sample rate of our project...
Both are at 48 KHz, but our audio format is 32 bit floating integer as opposed to the sequence set up of 16 bit.
Can't find a place in FCE to change our projects to 32 bit floating integer... is that a problem? How to correct?
    Thanks in advance...
    R. Dale McCarver

32-bit float is not the problem. Most likely the sample rate of your media does not match the sample rate of the 48K preset. Go to Easy Setup and check Show All. There is a preset for working with audio with a sample rate of 32K. You will need to recapture your material using the correct preset. Make sure you make a new sequence after that, which will also be in 32K. In future you should switch your camera to shooting in 48K or 16-bit as the camera manufacturers call it.

  • Audio and Video Chat problems

I have a G5 at home and have a MacBook Pro on the road and I am trying to video chat with my finacee (me using my mac account, her using an AOL IM account). We can text chat and send files through iChat, but if we try audio or video chat we both get the following error message. We both tried a test buddy (appleu3test01) and it worked fine, but we still can not chat with each other. I don't know what else to do.
There was a communication error during your chat. iChat encountered errors while communicating with participants in this chat. You can send details about the problems to Apple to help improve future versions of iChat.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-6b78us Sound Problem (sound routes to built-in speakers during voice chat)

I'm having an issue with my laptop. When I play using Steam with headphones plugged in, and  I attempt to start a voice call, the sound routes to the built-in speakers and I cannot switch it back to just headphones.
I tired unplugging and replugging the headphones, that didn't work, and  turning down the speaker sound made the game sound not go through the headphones. What could be wrong? Restarting fixes the issue, but it happens everytime I attempt to voice chat...

This used to happen to me when I 1st purchased my laptop. Heres a solution that worked for me.
RIght click on your audio icon next to the clock, then left click the "Playback  Devices" option.
On this window, look for the tab named "Communications" at the top. Heres a screenshot: http://puu.sh/4OtOO.png
When on this tab, click on "Do Nothing" this will prevent windows from switching your headphone to the speakers everytime you get a new notification.
    Cheers.

Sounds like the network's firewall or other security feature is blocking the ports used for sending the emails.
What type of neworks do not work? A businees network?

    Hello everybody,
I have a problem with the Java AudioFormat class, can you help me please?
The thing is Im working on a voice chat using the following audio format settings:
    AudioFormat(AudioFormat.Encoding.PCM_SIGNED, sampleRate, sampleSize, 1, 1, frameRate, false);
    Where:
    audioReadBytes = 1024;
    sampleRate = 8000.0F;
    frameRate = 8000.0F;
    sampleSize = 8;
My problem is that these settings can cause incrementing voice delay and sometimes even block the application. It works fine on a LAN but on the internet it never works.
I wanted to ask you if theres a better audioformat setting that can decrease the size and quality of the sound, so it works on low bandwidths.
Im new to audio formats so I dont understand them much and when I tried to change the settings by decreasing the sample rate I didnt get what I expected.
    Please help me...
    Thanks a lot,
    Dan.

Based on the concept of Unity in a gain chain, if you set the levels properly at the output of the analog mixer, then they should be fine coming into the software after the A/D conversion. As long as you don't clip the digital input, you can adjust levels internally on an audio timeline, so it is always better to err on the side of too little rather than too much.
Digital maximum is -20 dB which is equivalent to 0 dB VU in the analog world. This provides sufficient headroom to avoid clipping in most circumstance.
Try a few different levels and see what works best for your needs.
    HTH,

  • Can't seem to enable voice chat anymore

    hello folks
i just upgraded to an audigy but now when my friend and i try to initiate voice chat through x-fire and msn we can't hear each other at all, where we had no problems before...
i've got a p4 3.6ghz with gb of ram and i've disabled my onboard sound card in the bios.
i've also tested my mic and speakers through the audio tab in control panel in xp.
    any ideas?

    actionthom,
In the Creative Mixer, in the REC panel, make sure you have Mircrophone selected. Move the slider to your volume preference. Click on the red "+" at the top and select 20dB boost. If you want your own speakers to play what you say into the mic, then in the Source panel, un-mute Microphone. Adjust that slider to your preference. It's usually a good idea to mute any other sources you don't want.
Also, in Control Panel, Sounds and MultiMedia (or something similar for your system), Audio tab, make sure your Audigy is selected as the preferred device for Playback, Recording, etc. If you have a "Use only preferred devices" box, check it.Message Edited by Katman on 0-30-2006 07:4 PM
