PROBLEM IN SUBNETs CLASSFULL AND CLASSLESS!!!!!!!

SUBNET PROBLEM
In classfull we can use 10.0.0.0/8 as class A so we can start subnettting from /8/9...upto/32 so in short we have to start from /8 ..upto /8 all r NETWORK....
But in classless 10.0.0.0 we can use from /1 right or /25 or any mask
Questions::
1-why no need to start from /8 on class A
/16 on class B etc ...why ??
2-why we can use NETWORK bits upto /9 /10/15 etc ....????
3-how to know I have been ask on 10.0.0.0/8 from classA(classfull) or classless so how to calculate???
I have good picture example attached with this message...
In that I used 172.16.1.1/16 so in classfull 172.16.0.0/16 start host from /17 right??? so UPTO /16 ALL ARE NETWORK AFTER THAT SUBNET AND HOSTlike in my picture
but in classless picture calculator start from /20 as well and UPTO /20 ALL ARE NETWORK AND AFTER THAT HOST AND SUBNET??why???

Hi Anand,
IPv4 Ip address is 32 bit Binary address and which contains four octets.
so each octet is represented by eight bits

In Classfull,Class A network i.e 8 bit value 128 will never become one.In any other bit it may be 0 or one.at most it can have a value of 127.thats how classfull network defined.
Class A Network 10.0.0.0 can be represented has
10= (128*0)+(64*0)+(32*0)+(16*0)+(8*1)+(4*0)+(2*1)+(1*0)
   =8+2=10
0=(128*0)+(64*0)+(32*0)+(16*0)+(8*0)+(4*0)+(2*0)+(1*0)
  =0
0=(128*0)+(64*0)+(32*0)+(16*0)+(8*0)+(4*0)+(2*0)+(1*0)
=0
0=(128*0)+(64*0)+(32*0)+(16*0)+(8*0)+(4*0)+(2*0)+(1*0)
  =0
For class A Subnet mask
255= (128*1)+(64*1)+(32*1)+(16*1)+(8*1)+(4*1)+(2*1)+(1*1)
   =128+64+32+16+8+4+2+1
   =255
0=(128*0)+(64*0)+(32*0)+(16*0)+(8*0)+(4*0)+(2*0)+(1*0)
  =0
0=(128*0)+(64*0)+(32*0)+(16*0)+(8*0)+(4*0)+(2*0)+(1*0)
=0
0=(128*0)+(64*0)+(32*0)+(16*0)+(8*0)+(4*0)+(2*0)+(1*0)
  =0
For class A-It will start from 0-126,subnet will be 255.0.0.0 i.e /8
For Class B it will start from 128-192,subnet will 255.255.0.0.i.e /16
For Class C,it will start from 192-224,subnet will be 255.255.255.0 i.e /24
These are classfull networks.
In Classless network,as per our requirement changes will be done to subnet mask
In your Classfulll screen diagram, you have assigined 20 bits for network and 12 bit for host and for 16 subnets.i.e /20 network
In your classless, you have assigned 24 bit for network and 8 bit for host i.e /24 network

  • What is the fundamental difference between classful and classless routing?

    Hello to all,
After reading several RFCs, guides and HOWTOs I am confused by an apparently trivial question - what is the basic, fundamental difference between classful and classless routing?
I am well aware that - said in a very primitive way - the classful routing does not make use of netmasks and instead uses the address classes while the classless routing utilizes the netmasks and does not evaluate the address classes.
However, already in 1985 the RFC 950 (Internet Standard Subnetting Procedure) stated that the networks can be further subnetted using the network mask. Since then the routers are expected to use network masks in the routing decision process in the precise way they use it nowadays. However, if the routers use network masks they are doing the classless routing, aren't they? Where is then the difference if we used to describe the 80's way of routing as a classful routing? Or was it already the classless routing? The RFCs about CIDR came gradually only in 1992 and 1993.
If somebody could give me an insight into the key difference between classful and classless routing (and perhaps into the Internet history, how was the real routing done then) I would be most grateful.
    Thank you a lot!
    Regards,
    Peter

    Hello Mohammed,
I am afraid we still have not understood each other ;) I am not looking for the algorithms used to select the best path. I am well aware of them, both Ford-Bellman and Dijkstra, and about their internals. By the way, these algorithms do not have any influence whether the routing is classful or classless because they deal with metrics, not with masks. For example, a classless EIGRP internally uses a distance-vector algorithm, not a SPF algorithm.
I will try to explain once more what is my problem... There are two terms commonly used but badly defined: the classless routing and classful routing. Originally, I have thought that the classful routing works as follows:
    - The routing table consists only of classful destination networks (major nets), metrics and respective gateways. No network masks are stored in the table because we are classful, that is, we use exclusively the route classes and all entries in the routing table are already classful.
    - When routing a packet, the router looks at its destination IP address and determines the major net of this IP address (that is, the classful network that this IP address belongs to). Then it looks up the corresponding entry in the routing table and sends the packet to the respective gateway.
I thought that the classful routing works in this way. I won't describe the classless routing - both of us know how do the today's routers select the next hop.
However, in the RFCs 917 and 950 which were published in 1985, long ago before the term 'classless routing' was coined, the network mask was already defined and it was stated how the routers should work with it.
Now I am confused. The terms classless addresses and classless routing were defined sometime in 1990's, therefore I assume that the routing before the invention of classless IP assignment can be in fact described as classful. In other words, I thought that the routing that was commonly used in 1980's did not use netmasks and can be described as classful because the notion of classlessness came first in 1990's. But now I see that netmasks were defined in 1985.
Now where am I wrong? Do I understand the classful routing properly as I described it? Is it correct to talk about routing in that era as classful although the netmasks were already in use? Or was it already the classless routing?
Basically I am trying to understand what was called the classful routing if the classless routing is said to be something different.
Mohammed, I am most grateful to you for your patience and suggestions! Thank you indeed.
    Regards,
    Peter

  • Photosmart C4480 - Problems sharing between XP and Vista

I have my Photosmart C4480 connected via USB to my desktop which is running Windows XP. I have a home network set up between this desktop and my laptop which is running Windows Vista 32-bit. File sharing works and the computers can succesfully ping each other so no problem there.
I have the printer set to share in XP, but Vista does not see the printer on the network. I installed the printer drivers on both computers.
I know this isn't where it goes, but perhaps someone will read it. I called tech support and spent 57 minutes on the phone and got nowhere. No less than 40 minutes of the 57 were spent in complete silence. The only step the tech support rep asked me to do was to download the newest drivers on the laptop, but then told me not to install them. After 57 minutes, he sent me an e-mail containing a link to the specs for the printer. He asked me to read to him what it said next to "Connectivity" which was of course USB 2.0. I had already tried to explain once to the gentleman the difference between a wireless printer and a printer being shared over a wireless network. Clearly he never got the picture. After I read the connectivity option of USB 2.0 to the guy, he remarked that the printer could not be used on any wireless network. So frustrating. Very, very dissappointed in HP tech support.Very, very unlikely that I will purchase another HP product.
    Someone please help me.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I'm going to go through this very detailed and try to assume that you have no idea what you are doing so that the directions are clear and easy for anyone to understand.
    1. You need to first install the printer on the computer that it will be connected to via USB (the Windows XP computer in my example). Follow the exact instructions provided with the printer for best results. The directions are easy and clear and the steps need to be completed in the order they advise for proper installation.
    2. After you have the printer installed and working correctly on the computer the printer is directly connected to via USB, use the installation CD to install all the drivers on the computer that you want to access the printer via your home network (the Windows Vista computer in my example). When you put the provided installation CD in this computer click on Install or Setup or whatever similar option you are given on the menu. When you get near the end of the installation process, the setup prompts you to either connect the printer to the computer or to proceed and finish installation without connecting. You want to finish installation without connecting the printer.
    3. Now that you have all of the appropriate drivers installed on both computers you want to set up your network. On the computer that has the printer directly connected (the Windows XP computer in my case), you want to run the Network Setup Wizard in order to set up printer sharing. In Windows XP, you want to click Start >> My Network Places. This will open up the My Network Places window. In this window on the left side you should see some options under the heading "Network Tasks". Click on "Set up a home or small office network". This will open the Network Setup Wizard. You will notice that one of the bulleted items listed for what you can do with a network is "Share a printer". Follow and complete all of the steps of the Network Setup Wizard. Once you have completed this, your network should be set up and ready to go.
    4. Now you want to turn on sharing for the Photosmart C4480. Once again on the computer that has the printer directly connected via USB (again, Windows XP computer in my example), you want to click Start >> Control Panel >>  Printers and Faxes. In this menu you should see your newly installed Photosmart C4480 printer. Right-click on this printer and select "Properties". This will open up the HP Photosmart C4400 series Properties window. You will notice that the window has several tabs at the top. Click on the "Sharing" tab. Select "Share this printer" and give the printer a name in the "Share name:" text box. Don't make the name complicated. I used "HP-C4480" for mine. Click "OK" to close the window and save the changes.
    5. You need to find out what the IP address of the computer with the printer directly connected via USB is so that we can make sure your network is set up properly and that the other computer (running Windows Vista in my example) is able to properly communicate with the Windows XP computer. On the Windows XP computer that is connected to the printer, click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt. This will open up the Command Prompt window. Type "ipconfig" and press enter. This will show you your IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. Write down your IP address. It will be a series of four number separated by three periods (for example 192.178.1.2). You can close the command prompt window now.
    6. Now you need to find out what this computer's name is on the network. Click the Start button and then right-click on "My Computer" and select properties. This will open the "System Properties" window. You will notice that there are several tabs at the top of this window. Select the "Computer Name" tab. The name of this tab can vary from computer to computer, but there will be a tab named "Computer Name" or "Network Name" or something similar. Select that tab. On this tab you will see "Full computer name:" and then to the right of that will be your computer's name on the network (DESKTOP for example). Write this down. Click "OK" to close this window.
    7. Now you are done on the computer that has the printer directly connected via USB. Get on your other computer (the Windows Vista computer in my example). In Windows Vista click Start >> Accessories >> Command Prompt. This will open up the Command Prompt window. Type "ping IPaddress" and press enter. Put your IP address (for example 192.178.1.2) where I typed "IPaddress". This tests the communication between the two computers and will display the results after the test is done. Hopefully it will say something like 4 packets sent, 4 packets received, 0% lost. If packets were sent but not received then you have a network problem that must be sorted out before you printer is going to work.
    8. Assuming that the ping was successful, you are almost done. Close the Command Prompt window. Still on the Windows Vista computer (the computer not directly connected to the printer via USB), click Start >> Network. This will open up the "Network" window. Now your computer will search and display everything found on your network. This may take a minute or two so be patient if nothing shows up immediately. Eventually the other computer's name should be displayed (DESKTOP for example). Double click the icon above your other computer's name. This should now display a list of everything on the other computer that is shared over the network. Common things to see here are printers and a "SharedDocs" folder. You should see the HP Photosmart C4480 listed here. It will be listed under whatever name you gave to the printer in step 4 above. Right-click on the icon for the printer and select "Connect".
    9. This will open up the "Windows Printer Installation" window and will say "Connecting to PRINTERNAME on COMPUTERNAME". I cannot recall exactly what happens the first time you do this, but it may prompt you for some installation and such. If so, just follow whatever steps it gives you and it should successfully connect to the printer.
    10. At this point you are ready to go. You should now be able to open up Microsoft Word or any other program and print to the HP Photosmart C4480 printer from the Windows Vista computer over your network. The Photosmart C4480 will most likely not already be set as your default printer so you will have to select it from the menu on the Print window in the "Printer Name" dropdown menu. A window may open up saying that the computer is connecting to the printer when you do this. After this when you click on Print, your document should be sent over the network to the Photosmart C4480.
    11. If you want to set your Photosmart C4480 as your default printer on the computer it is not directly connected to (the Windows Vista computer in my example), click on Start >> Control Panel. This will open up the Control Panel Window. Under the "Hardware and Sound" heading, click on "Printer".  This will open the Printers window. You should see the "HP Photosmart 4400 series on COMPUTERNAME" icon in this window. Right-click on the icon and select "Set as Default Printer". After you do this you should see a green and white checkmark near the icon for the printer. The Photosmart C4480 is now set as the default printer on the computer and whenever you print from any application it will automatically have the Photosmart C4480 printer selected.
Hope this all made sense and solves your problems. Please post back and let me know if you get it working or if you have any other questions. I'll be more than happy to try and help!

  • Classful and classless routing

    hi,
could someone explain to me the functioning of classful and classless routing with this scenario:
router A's routing table contains subnets of 10.0.0.0 and a default route. a packet with destination IP address 192.1.1.1 arrives at its interface.
according to whether classful or classless routing is used, what happens to this packet?

    wassim
Given the scenario that you describe where the routing table has subnets of 10.0.0.0 and has a default route then the routing decision for a packet with destination 192.1.1.1 is exactly the same no matter whether it is classful routing or classless routing. In either case the router will forward using the default route.
The difference between classful and classless routing comes into play when you are making a routing decision for a subnet of a network where you have some subnets of the network in the routing table but do not have the particular subnet. So to follow your scenario assume that the routing table has routes for 10.1.1.0/24, 10.2.1.0/24, and 10.56.1.0/24 and you get a packet with destination address 10.99.2.6. In this case it makes a difference whether the router is operating classful or classless. If the router is operating classful then it drops the packet as destination unreachable. If the router is operating classless then it will forward the packet using the default route.

We've reached out to the Hotmail team and they've determined that this is a bug in their code. (It was masked by a timing issue in 3.5 that was fixed in 3.6.) We've worked with them to develop a fix but they may not have deployed it yet.

  • Problems with ListViews Drag and Drop

I'm surprised that there isn't an Active X control that can do this more

Subject: Problems with ListViews Drag and Drop
I am just curious as to other people's experiences with the ListView
widget when elements in it are set to be draggable. In particular, I am
currently trying to design an interface that looks a lot like Windows
Explorer where a TreeView resides on the left side of the window and a
ListView resides on the right side. Upon double clicking on the
ListView, if the current node that was clicked on was a folder, then the
TreeView expands this folder and the contents are then displayed in the
ListView, otherwise, it was a file and it is brought up in Microsoft
Word. All this works great if I don't have the elements in the ListView
widget set to be draggable. If they are set to be draggable, then I am
finding that the DoubleClick event seems to get registered twice along
with the ObjectDrop event. This is not good because if I double click
and the current node is a folder, then it will expand this folder in the
TreeView, display the contents in the ListView, grab the node that is
now displayed where that node used to be displayed and run the events
for that as well. What this means, is that if this is a file, then Word
is just launched and no big deal. Unfortunately, if this happens to be
another directory, then the previous directory is dropped into this
current directory and a recursive copy gets performed, giving me one
heck of a deep directory tree for that folder.
Has anybody else seen this, or am I the only lucky one to experience.
If need be, I do have this exported in a .pex file if anybody needs to
    look at it more closely.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Problems with Customer Service AND unexplained charges!

I've been with Verizon for I-don't-know-how-many years, and through the years you are bound to have a few problems here and there but some of the problems are just ridiculous! It's also the same reocurring problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was with Alltel first, before it was bought out by Verizon. The years I was with Alltel, I didn't have near as many problems. It seems EVERY time I do the smallest change or something to my phone or bill, I get a ridiculous amount of charges that I was NOT aware of, nor told about... EVEN IF I ask "So this isn't going to change my bill, or there will not be any unexpected/unexplained charges that I don't know about?"... BUT not matter how many times I ask... and NO matter how many times I am told "no"... there always is. For example.... last year, I updated and signed a new 2 year contract and purchased the first Driod. Before, my 30 day warranty was up, I was having problems with my Driod, and decided to send it in and get a new one. Before I did this.. I called customer service to make sure there would be no interuption in my bill, and there wouldn't be any unexpect charges, and there would be no difference in anything. I was told there was not, and once I recieved my new phone, just send it in and nothing would be changed. Of course, when I get my bill.. I see I was charged $500 for the new phone. It was explained to me that my credit card was reimbursed (which I never check that card, because I never used it expect to purchase the phone) and that I was recharged for the new phone, since it was a new phone. So I had to fork out the $500 (on top of my bill) and then wait months to get the $100 rebate card. Months after that, I "assumed liablity of my line" because I was on a plan with my family. I decided to have my own line, so I "assumed liability." I was not told that when I did that, I "renewed" my contract date. So I just added 6 more months to my 2 year contract. Was NOT told about that! Then again...... I was recently having problems with my Driod (the screen went black and would not come back on.) I had to turn on an OLD motorola razor, so I would not be without a phone for two days while I was waiting on my phone to come in. As soon as my phone came in, I had my Droid turned back on. I recieved my bill recently, and my bill was $200 over what it normally should be.... so I called in... apparently, when I had my phone replaced, they dropped off my data package and when I recieved my replacement driod, they never put it back on. So I was being charged for alllll my data usage... again I was NOT told about this. I wasn't even aware that they had dropped off my data package, and when/where did they get the authority to do that??? These are just a FEW of the problems that I have had.................................
Does anyone have these reoccuring problems!?

I understand that my bill can be viewed online, and I do view it fairly regularly, so if there are any unexplained charges, I can call Verizon asap. The problem does not come from me not understanding my bill, but from customer service. I have been with Verizon for a very long time, and it is a continuing problem. Where did Verizon get the 'OK' to drop my data package off my plan? Who authorized that?
After calling Verizon and trying to find out the problem, the gentleman told me that when I activated on old phone while I was waiting on my new Droid to arrive, my data package was dropped off and I "should" have been told about that. When I reactiviated my new Droid, I "should" have called and had them restart my data package. I was not aware that when you activate an old phone that data plan is taken off your plan. In all my years of having cell phones, I never make two years with one phone. I have always, at one point, had to turn on an old phone, and my data package has NEVER changed. Why would I have my data package dropped and why would I have to call Verizon to have it restarted. I would never know to do that unless I was TOLD that my data packaged HAD to be re-added when I recieved my new phone, but I was never told of that.
All of that is beside the point, the point is, Verizon was never given the authorization to change my plan. Never. My bill was taken care of and readjusted, and I am thankful for that. It does not change the fact it is always a hassle with Verizon Customer Service and I am always the one having to PROVE that I am not at fault, or that I was NEVER told of certian things. EVERY TIME I HAVE CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE, I AM TOLD "I'M SORRY, THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU THAT."
"they should" does not help my bill with the extra armount of charges.

  • Problems with dropped calls and no reception on Samsung Continuum

My mother and I both purchased a Samsung Continuum in late March 2011, and have experienced the same problems with the phone.  The device drops at least 2-3 calls per day, often on the same conversation; we have not found that location or time of day makes a difference.  The phone freezes up frequently, even if no apps are running in the background.  We lose our 3G network reception frequently, and cannot access our texts, emails, or the internet.  The screen saver kicks in even when we are actively dialing a number, or typing in a text message.  The overall performance of the phone is also poor, and it is quite slow much of the time.
We have raised this issue several times with a representative at one of the Verizon stores, but he states that he can find no problem with the phone, and that these issues may not be covered under our insurance plan.  None of my friends with non-Samsung phones are having the same problems with phone reception and performance.  I am aggravated enough with these issues that I am considering reactivating my old Blackberry, which worked like a charm.
I am not upset that my phone has not been updated to Android 2.2.  I just want the phone to perform as stated, and not fail at its primary function:  making and receiving phone calls.  I am not certain if these problems originate with the phone, Verizon, or Samsung, nor do I care.  I just want to resolve these issues as soon as possible, or I will have to look at other alternatives.
    Thank you.

If this doesn't work...now what??? I have a useless $400 plus piece of unreliable junk. My Motorola Razor was ions more reliable than this phone...very, very sad but true.
What carrier were you using with the Razor? AT&T? Same area?

  • Problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes after updating to 10.5.6

    Hi all,
after installing 10.5.6 I have problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes.
The time to open mails, websides and iTunes store is increasing dramatically since the update. If I open a webside parallel with Safari and Firefox, Safari needs minimum 15 times longer to open the complete side. Mails containing HTML-code also needs a long time to be opened. Tha same Problem with iTunes store. Connecting to the Store costs at least 30 - 40 seconds. And unfortunately for every iTunes store side I open. Its terrible
Any idea or workaroung to solve that problem?
    Regards
    Michael

First, run Disk Utility and repair permissions and then restart.
I installed the 10.5.6 Combo update. Sometimes things get "lost in the translation" when you use Software Update depending on your installation. Perhaps you can download 10.5.6 Combo from the website and install it from your desktop.

  • Problems with the richTextEditor and quotes

    Hello
I'm having problems with quote chars and the richText
control's htmlText. When users enter quotes into the richTextEditor
control. The quotes breaks the HTML text, meaning it's no longer
well formatted. Is there an escape char that I need to use. Or do I
need to force some kind of refresh on the control prior to using
    the htmlText string?

I have been using RTE in a content management system and
found a need to replace non-standard quote characters with proper
UTF-8 character counterparts. Curly quotes in particular are
problematic. Use a replace function to substitute non-standard for
    standard characters.

  • Problems with .ARW files and auto toning

problems with .ARW files and auto toning
let me try to explain this because this has happened in past and never found a way to resolve but i lived with it
now that I have a Sony A7R the problem is more serious
Firstly i take pride it making the picture happen all in camera, i use DRO lvl 5 to get enough light, like when i'm shooting at dusk. DRO its like doing HDR but in a single file, it lightens the darks. in my camera i'm happy with results
but when I upload them to lightroom, they come out near black.
    allow me to explain
lets say I import 100 images
i double check my preferences and everything is UNCHECKED when it comes to importing options, there is no auto toning, nothing.
as the images import i see a preview in the thumbnail which looks fine.
i double click on one to enlarge it, hence leave grid view.
for a brief 1 or 2 seconds, i see the full image in all its glory but than lightroom does something funny, it darkens the image
one by one as it inspects each image, if it was a DRO image it makes it too dark.
to make this clear, the image is perfect as it was in the beginning but after a few seconds lightroom for some reason thinks it needs to correct it.
how to prevent lightroom from doing this, i want the image exactly as it is, why must lightroom apply a correction>?
i think it has to do something with interpreting the raw file and lightroom applies its own algorithm.
but here is what i dont get.....before lightroom makes the change i'm able to witness the picture exactly as it was taken and want it unchanged..
now i have to tweak each file or find a profile for it which is added work.
any ideas how to prevent lightroom from ruining my images and just leave them as they were when first detected...
there are 2 phases...one is when it originally imports and they look fine
second is scanning each image and applying some kind of toning which darkens it too much.
    thanks for the help

sorry thats the auto reply message from yahoo email.
    i've disabled it now
thing is, there is no DRO jpg to download from the camera
its only ARW. so my understanding is when i use DRO setting, the camera makes changes to the ARW than lightroom somehow reads this from the ARW.
but then sadly reverts it to no DRO settings.
because i notice if i take normal picture in raw mode its dark but if i apply dro to it, it comes out brighter, yet when i d/l the image from camera to lightroom, which is an ARW - there are no jpgs. lightroom decides to mess it up
so in reality there is no point in using DRO because when i upload it lightroom removes it.
is there a way to tell lightroom to preserve the jpg preview as it first sees it.
its just lame, picture appears perfect...than lightroom does something, than bam, its ruined,.
what do i need to do to prevent lightroom from ruining the image? if it was good in the first place.

  • Problems installing Adobe Air and BBC iPlayer Desktop

Problems installing Adobe Air and BBC iPlayer Desktop
I'm running Windows 7 32 bit on an ASUS netbook with 2mb ram. I installed both  Air 3.7 and BBC iPlayer Desktop using Google Chrome. I downloaded 3 BBC programmes. Two ran fine but the third wouldn't start and I kept getting a message to try again later. I deleted this programme and downloaded it again, with the same result.
So I uninstalled both Air and the BBC iPlayer Desktop, the Air exe file and the two folders at the following locations:
    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AIR\   and
    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\BBCiPlayerDesktop.xxx
Since doing this each time I try to install Air either on its own or with the BBC iPlayer software I get the message part way through installation:
    "Sorry, an error has occurred.
An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator."
I have run the Microsoft Fix it programme and still get the same result.
I have tried everything on your Trouble Shooting page apart from the bit about the elevated command prompt, but as I'm the sole user and administrator, that seems unnecessary.
I have closed Chrome and tried installation using Windows Explorer but with the same result.
I have tried all the above with Microsoft Security Essentials running and disabled. And I have tried the same with Astrill on and off.
I have had a response from the BBC with much the same advice as appears on your trouble shooting page.
Here is the Air installation log, followed by the MSI log.

Problems with itunes 8 and ipod shuffle gen 2.
I recently upgraded from itunes 7 to itunes 8 on my windows XP PC. That's when i had issues syncing my 2nd gen shuffle.
When i try to drag songs directly on it, itunes says i can't
I made a playlist and use auto fill. But when I remove it from the dock, it's either not updated, or the new songs are at the bottom of the playlist when they are supposed to be up higher. I end up having to hit auto fill twice to make it sync correctly.
    Computer Specs
    Windows XP SP3
384MB of Ram (works really good)
    USB 1.1 connection
Pentium 4 clocked at 1.285 GHZ
    IPOD Shuffle Specs
    2nd Generation
    1GB (964MB)
    Version 1.0.4
unchecked options: open itunes when ipod is attached, Sync only checked songs, convert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps AAC, Enable sound check, Limit MAX volume, enable disk use
All those are NOT checked. Sometimes i enable disk use for seeing the IPOD_Control folder, but either way it still messes up.
    Itunes Specs:
    Version 8.1.1.10

This is a well-known issue. Apple changed the internal file names used with iTunes 8, which makes the ordering on 2nd generation Shuffles behave differently. There is no good workaround, apart from moving the files with a hand-crafted AppleScript program.
Apple has been silent on the issue, so nobody knows if we'll ever have a fix for it or not.
