Problem inserting photos in Imovie project

i have what seems an unusual problem inserting photos into one of my projects. some photos insert fine however others that are dragged into the project dont appear when the video is played. the bar does however appear above the video clip showing that the photo has been inserted and the duration can be toggled.
i then tried inserting the same photo into another short project and it worked fine?!
has anyone come across this? would really appreciate your help as trying to put together a video clip for a wedding which is taking place in a few days!!

I have also tried deleting the com.apple.imovie.plist ... I don't have one to delete ?? And, I tried repairing disk permissions with disk utility ... no change. I have also tried changing the title of the project. These same pictures can be added into any other project ... I'm going CRAZY!

Cannot insert photos into iMovie project

Suddenly I am unable to drag/drop photos from the iPhoto window in iMovie into my current project.
I click on the Photo button and thumbnails of my photos appear. I click on a photo (it is highlighted in blue) and drag it to the desired location within my project. When I drop it between clips (the green "Add" button appears) it just doesn't appear in the project.
I have tried several times to drag/drop the photos (from within iMovie and from an opened Finder window), restarted iMovie and restarted my computer but I still cannot add photos to my project.
Any suggestions? Is it the software or my computer?

Cannot add photos to iMovie project

I had started work on an iMovie '09 project (version 8.0.4) and was using both videos and photos in the project. However, after a certain point when I tried to drag a photo into the project area, iMovie would not let me add it. I am still able to insert videos, though. Also, I am not able to publish the project as a quicktime file. I created another project and the same problems persisted. Any ideas on how to fix this issue would be much appreciated. Thanks.

usually, I do NOT recommend reinstalling ( a ritual habitual on inferior OSs.. ) , but in your case, indeed, there IS something seriously wrong.. give it a try, and tell us, what happens..

Preset or change duration of still photos in iMovie project

I work with iMovie 11 and never had any problem with previous versions.
Now I'm doing my first project in iM 11 and it just ignores my requests
When I set the duration in 'Project Properties' 'Apply to all photos' to e.g. 4 sec it will set the duration anything from 5 to 7 sec and no matter how often I change it will not react. If I set it to 3 sec (as an example) it will allow 5 sec. but never what I would like the duration to be.
This is a really annoying issue, more so when there a lot of still photos in the project.
Is there any way to rectify this or what else can I do???

A number of people have experienced the same problem and written about it on discussions. Lots of difference solutions as well. If you search using the title quoted above, you can read the solution I found. It's more complicated than it should be. I've never had to fiddle as much with duration times for transitions and still photos. Nevertheless, the steps I have described work for me. You will also find the steps another reader offered that may work for you if all of your transitions are set for the same durations and all of the still photos are as well.

I have created an IMovie project and how do I insert additional photos in a desired sequence? I have a certain sequence of events planned, in a certain chronological order and I want to edit a certain part of the project. How do I do this? Thanks.

May be I misunderstand's this but
Open Media and here Photos (the Camera icon)
Select the photo needed.
Drag and drop it ONTOP of the Video-Clip in Your movie (where You want it to be) and then from the now un-folding menu select - CUTAWAY -
And the photo will be inserted in Your movie without any change in Audio or over-all duration.

Trouble inserting photos into iMovie

I am trying to import some photos into iMovie that I copied from a website. When I try to insert them from a file on my desktop, where I saved them, I only get a portion of the photo. I went back to the folder and opened each picture outside of iMovie and they are complete pictures of high resolution. When I insert them, they turn out to be a part of the photo in low resolution. Ideas?

You might also try dragging the folder into iphoto and see if they will import there. Then access them from within imovie. If iphoto won't see them then you will need to convert them like was already suggested.

Transfered DVD ( via Handbrake ) to Aperture folder. Was able to transfer still photos to iMovie project but DVD project ( in same folder would not transfer. What is correct procedure?

Trouble adding photos into iMovie project

In one particular Project, when I try and add still photos, when I drag them into the project window I see the green line and the green 'plus sign', but then the pictures are not actually added...why is it doing this? It works in other Projects, so I'm wondering if it's just a glitch.

I had this problem last year (August-Sept 2007), and I'm having it again now (August 2008). When I import jpeg photos from iPhoto to iMovie, they turn black and are not accessible in iMovie. In addition, this time when I imported several photos, the replay of the iMovie became jerky. When I threw out the photos, the movie became smoother, the way it was originally. There seems to be some sort of bug that has not been fixed in over a year.

Inserting photo in iMovie, becomes still frame of video before it.

When I insert a photo into my iMovie it creates a still frame of the video before. Doesn't matter where in the clips I put it and I've tried dragging a photo in from Finder and using the iPhoto in the iMovie application. And, if I put a photo after a photo, the second photo becomes a still frame of the first photo. Help!

Photos in iMovie project float on a GREY background in iDVD widescreen.

I created a iMovie using photos. They are standard 4:3 ratio. When imported into an iDVD widescreen template (which is what I want), the photos have GREY bars on each side. Is there any way to change those bars to BLACK?

I believe that that is just playback view, and that the bars will be black on the DVD that you burn. That is, the photos will look like they are floating on a black background like you want. You can test this by saving your iDVD project as a disk image (an option on the file menu), and then viewing the disk image on your Mac's DVD player app.

While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter: chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )

How to insert photos in a project?

I drag photos from the media browser on the project, inside of a given clip, until it gets blue, and let it fall. I adjust the length of the photo by moving the start or end from the photo.
BUT WAIT: Sometimes, the photo is visible as a blue thing over the clip, but it does not appear when playing the movie or hovering over. Sometimes it works as expected, but not very often.

Set your desired e-mail client in the iPhoto preferences and select a photo and share ==> e-mail
Or in the e-mail client use the media browser (if available) or use the client's attach command (typically under the file menu ) and look in the media browser sertion in the lower left under media ==> photos ==> iPhoto
Or drag the photo from iPhot to the e-mail client in the DOCK
or select the photo in iPhoto and export to the desktop and attach from there

Is it possible to insert a time clock in iMovie project?

I'm making for myself an iMovie project of doing pushups (the goal, of course, is to gradually do more pushups).
Is there any kind of "effect" that I could insert into the iMovie project, which displays the time? (like a little stopwatch?)
Or, does iMovie have a "built-in" function which will display the time of the clip (in a stopwatch-type fashion)?

The easiest way I can think of is to record a close-up of a clock and then use this movie clip as Picture in Picture and this function is in iMovie'09 and 11. iMovie'08 - don't think so - at least I've not found it. iMovie up to HD6 - there are such function and many more can be added as plug-ins ( iMovie'08 and futhur has put an end to Plug-ins )

IMovie '11 How do I recover a project that appears within the IMovie Projects folder but does not show in the Project Library?

I have had my MBP for just over 3 months now! Yes, I made the switch and up until now I have been quite happy.
I now have my Time Capsule, Apple TV running and am generally getting used to life as a Mac user.............even bought Aperture and loaded all the family photos. Now time to make some Travel movies.
I have been working on a particular IMovie project for a few weeks now. Size is 365MB. Yesterday I closed IMovie and when accessing later that project is not available in the Project Library window. It does appear in the IMovie Projects folder but I cannot open it. I have copied the file to DVD just in case. All up I have 4 Projects, the other 3 are practice files, smaller but they do appear in the Project Library.
I have scoured the bulletin boards and tried many suggested fixes to no avail. Main suggestion was to remove the following files from Library/Preferences
com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
com.apple.iApps.plist
However, this did not sort out my problem. In the end I put back the original files.
Does anyone have a straightforward fix for my problem or is this one of those ongoing issues that that needs Apple's attention.
After all the file is there with the others. They are available.
I realise that I can restore from Time Capsule but I am missing the last three days thanks to 'drop out'.

You can report the problem by providing feedback to Apple. In the iMovie app, from the menu select iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback. This will take you to an Apple page where you can complete a form and submit it to Apple.

Other than the forum moderators, Apple doesn't normally monitor these forums, nor make comments on posts. So, it's up to us to report the problem to them directly (using the feedback form mentioned above).
As the problem has affected me just the one time (touch wood), I haven't bothered to report it as yet. But, after seeing your posts on this, I'm now reconsidering that. Something must be triggering it. My system is in pretty good shape, so I'm guessing it must be a glitch of some sort, either in Mountain Lion or in the iMovie app itself. Perhaps it's a 3rd party app causing the problem? It doesn't give us much confidence now, in that we may start worrying about losing other projects.
A good practice is to duplicate the project from time to time (something I'll be doing more of), although Time Machine backups also provide the necessary security. To duplicate, in Project Library view (where all the projects are listed) click on the project name so that it is highlighted, then select File > Duplicate Project. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) on the project name and select Duplicate Project from the pop-up menu. Of course, you may already know this. Duplicating probably won't guarantee that the copy will not also disappear from the Project Library, but is worth doing anyway.
As I mentioned in the post I linked to earlier, when the problem arose with my iMovie project I was using ProRes 422 clips I had imported from a Final Cut Pro X Event. My immediate thought was that ProRes 422 had caused the problem. But this of course may have been coincidental - reinforced now by your experience, where you are probably working with Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) clips.
Anyway, glad to hear that you've recovered your project through Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to start from scratch as I had Time Machine turned off during my editing sessions (that's a story for another day).

Incorporate existing iMovie project into new, longer one

I have an 8-minute iMovie project, with lost of careful editing (multiple sounds tracks, transitions, etc.)
I need to incorporate it as one section in a longer iMovie project I'm now working on. But when it becomes the one section of a larger project, I have to shorten it in half, to be only 4 minutes.
Two questions:
1) How do you insert an existing iMovie project into a new one -- bring over all the pieces at once, with everything in tact (music, transitions, etc.)?
2) This is a little more complicated. Since I have to boil down the 8 minute piece to 4 minutes, I'd rather not have to go back into the original and do painstaking editing -- which would involve rejiggering transitions, music fades, and all kinds of things. I'd rather export it to Quicktime, bring that into the new, larger iMovie project, where I can crop out parts I don't want and tie togehter the remaining pieces with transitions.
My concern: when I export original 8 minute project to Quicktime, doesn't that compress it? If so, and I bring that already-compressed Quicktime into new, longer iMovie project, when the new one is finished and I export it out to a DVD (end product) -- won't that be re-compressing the already compressed portion?
