Problem Installing Additional Memory -- Older G4 15"

I am having a problem installing additional memory this computer:
Machine Name: Powerbook G4 15"
Machine Model: Powerbook 5,2
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 256 MB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.7.1f1
Serial Number: V734***RY
The symptoms are the same as those described here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303173
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

tguild,
Our PB's are sensitive to the memory used - cheap memory typically doesn't work, although the raw specs, PC2700 DDR SDRAM, may meet Apple's published specs. Three brands that seem to consistently work in our PB's are Crucial, Kingston, and Samsung (which is used by Apple as factory fill). Both Crucial and Kingston have memory selectors on their site, so you get the correct RAM (Crucials fitment guarantee requires you use their memory selector).
Crucial is available from www.crucial.com, Kingston from www.kingston.com (choose specials/promotions/25% off notebook memory for a reduced price), and one source for Samsung chips is OWC at www.macsales.com.
So, make sure you've got quality memory. Your PB serial number is outside the range covered by the Apple repair program. I would make sure that with quality memory, it's doing what you want it to do before shipping it off for repair. Some with the lower socket issue have chosen to use one RAM strip in the upper slot, and not pay for repair. I've seen estimates of $350 and up to repair it for those not covered by the repair program, and some have lucked out by having their local Apple store fix it, even though it's outside the serial number range.
You only have 256mb today - OS X really likes more memory, so if you can upgrade to at least 512mb, or even 1gb, you'll be happier with the performance.

  • HP 520-1030 Touchsmart - Installing additional Memory

I'm trying to install additional memory on my HP Touchsmart. I was told when purchasing this PC that I could simply take the back off and put in an additional 4GB stick of DDR3 RAM as this model has 2 slots, only 1 of which is currently used? I can't even see where the memory goes!
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks,

  • How can I purchase and install additional memory in my powerbook G4?

I've got to install more memory into my powerbook G4 (currently just 256 MB  of DDR SDRAM, only 3.2 GB of free disk space and 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 processor).  Can someone point me toward a supplier of the memory cards I need, as well as a tutorial for how to do a self install?  I don't want to sink $$$ at the mac store on such an aging machine, but I want to keep her running as long as possible.  How high can I go with the memory on this machine given its restraints?
While I'm at it, is there anyway to amplify or boost the wireless signal receiver?  My machine has almost zero bars of internet connectivity in places where other machines have 4 bars.
    Thanks!  =O)

Did you physcally look at the RAM slots to confirrn two modules are installed? Do that before proceeding. It's very important--for some reason yours may have been ordered with only 256MB. Opening the RAM slot cover is a user-doable/approved operation
There was a repair extension program for the 15-inchers' RAM slot problem, but it's now long-expired. The next step is only if you physically can see two modules: If you feel that, as the original owner, this was not properly communicated to you, you could make a cool-headed and document-backed plea to Apple Customer Relations (1-800-767-2775 in North America).
"Is a logic board the same thing as a motherboard.. "
For all practical purposes, yes. Macs have logic boards; PC's have motherboards in common terminology. They are the mounting point and connectivity path for the processor and most other internal components. Presumably, the "mother" part was derived from epithets flamed forth by disgruntled PC users.
BeebleBrox has already linked one RAM vendor I use, Other World Computing. The other is Data Memory Systems:
    Apple PowerBook G4 1.5GHz 15" Screen (200 Pin PC2700 DDR SODIMMs)
I've ordered all my Mac RAM from only these two vendors for close to a decade and am very happy with both.
256MB RAM with OS 10.4.11 is like saying someone has an IQ of 10 but it takes 12 to grunt. My older PBG4 at 1Ghz also has 10.4.11 but 1G RAM. It does fine. A lack of RAM makes the Virtual Memory system spend a lot of time writing data to the hard drive when there is no more RAM available. The slowness this VM operation induces gets worse as the free space on the HD grows smaller as you add files and programs.
I don't think low RAM or a bad RAM slot would cause the wireless connection issues. The antenna is in the display frame as I recall. There are a lot of reports of a negative change in ability to pick up wireless networks being traced to other wireless devices in the area. See what's been added to the house/office that is also wireless.
What I don't know is where you are. I answered with the potentially flawed assumption that you are in North America. OWC ships internationally, but I don't believe DMS ships outside N. America without making you jump through hoops and hedgerows. Post your geographic locations in your profile info and it will make it easier for people to respond to the common "where can I get" questions.
This grew long, but what you need to do before anything else is open the RAM cover and count modules (They are "stacked" so one is covered by the other but should be visible). As I now know your screen size, I can link the instructions for doing so:

  • How do I install additional memory on my x100e laptop

    Hello everyone,
I am a new user to this forum and searched the topics but could not find the answer.
I recently purchased a 100e with 1GB memory.  I have purchased 4GB of memory to upgrade the laptop.  I have googled how to install the memory, but, have not found the answer (but, did find this forum!).
I have turned the laptop off, removed the battery, removed the screws and back cover.  But, when I try to insert the new memory into the slot, it is very tight and does not seem to fit.  I do not want to force it.  FYI, I have purchased the G.Skill PC2-6400 SO-DIMM which I was told is the right memory for this laptop.
Can someone please help or point me to a video on how to install the memory?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Problem installing additional options after upgrade to 8.1.7.4

    Hi all,
the installer gives me a bit of a problem. I installed 8.1.7 without intermedia and upgraded the installation to 8.1.7.4.
Now I need to install intermedia onto the same ORACLE_HOME. I do this from the 8.1.7.0 cd-rom.
But before I can select only to install intermedia, the installer says that there is an higher version of the database installed in de ORACLE_HOME and the installer can not continue and suggests to install into a different ORACLE_HOME.
I tried to install from the 8.1.7.4 staging area, but that way one can only upgrade allready installed opptions.
The only option I have left to try is to install into a different ORACLE_HOME and manually copy everything into the exsisting ORACLE_HOME. But I'm affraid that would leave me with a buggy installation (the installer not knowing what is going on and such).
I'm sure I'm not the first to do this.
    Ideas anyone?
    TIA
    Robin Betjes

Might as well respond to my own posting, since this is still at the top of a google search for UTL_NLA invalid.
The only solution is to either use transportable tablespaces , exp/imp, or expdp/impdp to move your data over to a fresh 10.2.0.3 or 10.2.0.4 system. The problem occurs due to database originally in 32-bit mode being upgraded to 64-bit 10.2.0.3 prior to applying 10.2.0.3 patches 5892355 and 5871314. Applying these two patches after you have already upgraded it 10.2.0.3 will not help. The corruption enters during the Oracle upgrade process and once present is unfixable. We pushed oracle support for a long time but never got a workable fix.

  • HT1423 Installed additional memory, but all I get is beeping. Bad memory? Wrong module?

I added a gb of RAM to my 2007 iMac, but all I got was beeping. Is this a bad module? Wrong module? All went back to normal when I removed it.

Could be a bad module, could be the wrong type of module, could be a defective slot. Your model uses two - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs. You may install up to 6 GBs although Apple only certifies 4 GBs. 6 GBs may not always work.

  • X200 with Additional memory (GSkill 2GB PC-10666 (1333MHz) SO-DIMM DDR3)

    Hi Guys
I just got my new X200 and generally quite happy about it.
I need to install additional memory to it since i only got the 1Gb installed.
I found a good deal for:
    GSkill 2GB PC-10666 (1333MHz) 200-pin SO-DIMM DDR3
Could any of you please advise me whether I can install this memory with the 1Gb memory that's already installed onboard?
I think the speed is a bit different?
I don't mind if this memory will run at a step down speed.
I am more worry about the compatibility.
    Thank you.

There is problem about additinoal RAM and BIOS 2.02.
But it should be find with BIOS 1.10 - downgradable!
GET it! X200 is a lot faster with 3Gb DDR3!!!!

How is additional memory installed on a current iMac 27" that comes with the factory installed 4GB?

That's correct. Save money by shopping for memory. Check OWC and DataMem. The brand is really not very important. Buy from a reliable vendor and always purchase product that carries a manufacturer's Lifetime Warranty.

  • 3D performance problems after upgrading memory

I recently purchased an additional 2GB of memory to try and extend the life of my aging computer.  I installed the memory yesterday and Windows seems to recognize it (reporting now 3.3GB) but when I dropped into WoW (pretty much the only game I have) the 3D performance was down from the usual 60FPS @ 1600x1080 to a bleak 20 (at best) and the CPU utilization went to about 80% on both cores (with ~20% kernel usages).  Basically WoW was being software 3D rendered!!!
I went through the usual reinstall drivers, reboot, etc... and couldn't find a fix.  I powered down, pulled out 2 of the memory sticks, booted up, and dropped into WoW - it ran at the full 60FPS and CPU utilization was very low (i.e. back to GPU Hardware 3D rendering).  I powered down again, swapped the 2 sticks for the other 2 sticks, booted up, and dropped into WoW - again it ran 100% fine.  So I powered down, put all four sticks in, booted back up, and when I dropped into WoW it was running in the software 3D rendering mode (20FPS at best and High CPU/Kernel usage).
I've tried the /PAE option in boot.ini - no joy.  I've tried /MAXMEM = to 3300, 3072, 3000, and even 2048 - no joy in any of those cases.  Has anyone seen anything like this before?  Or have suggestions to fix (other than going to Win7-64)?
All info in signature is up to date.
Thanks in advance for any help!

PAE or Physical Memory Extension will not do anything as Microsoft has castrated this feature to such an extend that it has nothing to do with memory addressing anymore when in comes to Windows XP:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension#Microsoft_Windows
    Quote
Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later, by default, on processors with the no-execute (NX) or execute-disable (XD) feature, runs in PAE mode in order to allow NX. The NX (or XD) bit resides in bit 63 of the page table entry and, without PAE, page table entries only have 32 bits; therefore PAE mode is required if the NX feature is to be exploited. However, desktop versions of Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista) limit physical address space to 4 GiB for driver compatibility reasons.
The feature is already automatically enabled.  But since is original function (Address Extension) does no longer exist when it comes to the desktop versions of Windows XP, it won't really do anything you would ever notice.
About the /MAXMEM Switch:  In Windows 32bit operating systems, every process is limited to 2GB of memory.  The point of the switch is to allow certain applications (or their run-time process) to occupy a higher amount of system memory than 2GB.  However, the culprit here is that only those applications are able to utilize this ability that have been programmed (or compiled) accordingly.  A special flag (large memory aware) has to be implemented.  Otherwise, these application will be restricted to 2GB even though the /MAXMEM Switch has been set to extend the 2GB limit to 3GB.  Most 32bit applications come without the "large memory aware" flag and that is why usually, settings the switch won't change anything.
In any case, it is unlikely that /PAE (even if it would not be castrated) and /MAXMEM would have an impact on your actual issue because I doubt that it has much to do with either memory adressing or the memory limit of an indiviual Windows process.

There are a couple of hardware based explanations to consider here.  Let's start with the most obvious one:
    1. 975X Memory Controller
The main reason that the system chooses to automatically set the Memory Speed to DDR2-667 even though DDR2-800 modules are installed, is that by design the memory controller of the Intel 975X Chipset does not natively support DDR2-800 modules, but
    >>Intel® 975X Express Chipset Datasheet - For the Intel® 82975X Memory Controller Hub (MCH)<< [Page 20]
This means, that from the point of view of the memory controller, operating the memory @DDR2-800 actually means overclocking it (with all potential side effects).
Basically, if your initial problem disappears as soon as you reduce the memory speed to DDR2-667, the design limitation of the memory controller may explain your findings.
    2. Different memory modules
If I read your signature correctly, you are actually mixing two different kits/models of RAM (CM2X1024-6400C4DHX and  CM2X1024-6400C4).  This can work of course, but in practice it not necessarely does under all circumstances.
This list  (-> http://ramlist.i4memory.com/ddr2/) indicates that there are at least 14 different module types/revisions of Corsair DDR2-800 / CL4 modules that utilize a wide range of different memory chips (Elpida, ProMos, Micron, Infinion, Powerchip, Qimonda, Samsung, Infinion etc.).  Even though the superficial specifications for these chips appear to be pretty similar (DDR2-800 / CL5 / CL4), this does not necessarely mean that the modules will respond to the same operating conditions in the same way. There may be small difference in sub-timings/sub-latencies and/or the general responsiveness of the ICs which may affect the operating behaviour of the memory controller (which by the way also includes the PCI-Express interface which your video card is hooked up to).
And again:  If running the system @DDR2-667 solves your issue, the possible explanation is that higher clock speeds may amplify (or trigger) potential performance problems that could have to do with the use of non-identical memory modules.
Furthermore: It is also possible that the memory controller's design limitations and the potential compatibility problems that may be attributed to mixing different modules types may reinforce each other in terms of reduced system performance.
    3. The BIOS may have an impact as well
There has been known issue with the use of certain video cards in conjunction with 4GB of system memory on this mainboard:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=107301.0
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=105955.0
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=99818.msg798951#msg798951
What may have come out as graphics/display corruption in earlier BIOS Releases may come out as reduced system performance when using the latest BIOS Release.  Of course, this is hard to prove, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.  May I ask what amount of video memory your card has onboard?
Fortunately, there is a BIOS version that you could consider to try in this matter.  It is not only the last BIOS Release that could be used in order to avoid the corruption issue, but it is (in my oppionion) the best BIOS Version that was ever released for the 975X Platinum PUE Mainboard:  W7246IMS.716 [v7.1b6].  I have been using this mainboard for almost two years and have tested almost every BIOS Release that ever came out and I always went back to v7.1b6 as "ground zero".
It will properly support your E6600 (so you don't have to worry about that) and as far as I remember, there are no known compatibility issues with other components.  So maybe, you want to give this a shot.
The bottom line is that in a worst case scenario, the problem you describe could be caused by all of the above things at the same time.  You cannot really do anything about the 975X Chipset Specifications and the only way to rule out explanation #2 is to test modules that are actually identical (same model number, revision and memory chips).  A test of the 7.1b6 BIOS Release is something you should consider.  It may be the only way to test the BIOS Hypothesis.
This post turned out to be longer than I intended, but then again, I am well-rested after a good sleep and the wake-up coffee is kicking in pretty good.

  • Installing new memory

okay, to make a long story longer...i purchased my mac intel over six months ago from macmall, had a bit of a problem when the memory became disloged. (would not start) after several great responses from the discussion forum and many hoops later, i had to bite the bullet and bring it in to an authorized service center. no problem...they said the memory was bad, contact mac-mall...which i did, they said contact lifetime memory products...which i did...finally after much ado about nothing, and three months later i got my new memory replacement...
now, i am trying to install this memory and it just does not work...I have pushed it in, heard some "clicks" whatever else i could do, but when this second 512 mb is in my computer, i go back to the old days of blank screen and indicator light on...nothing more...
this thing will just not work on my computer...what am i doing wrong and how can i get this fixed...
i am convinced that i should toss this memory and go to my service center and pay to have this installed...along with perhaps a larger memory upgrade...
but i really dont want to pay as the money is just not there...
    any thoughts or suggestions???
and, as always, thanks in advance...
i just am clueless about making this memory work for me...(and this kind of stuff usually happens right after i tell someone in the office they should have bought a mac....) ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH.
    thanks again.
    gigi

    vince bennett,
Perhaps there is more than one way, but I copy the web address from the browser's address bar and place it after these eight characters separated by a space which I have added as the ninth character:
    shift comma/a/space/h/r/e/f/equals mark/quote
then follow that address with these two characters:
    quote/shift period
which I then follow with the word, phrase, title or description I want to use, that followed by the four closing characters which complete the hyperlink:
    shift comma/normal slash/a/shift period
No additional spaces are used but for the one. The descriptive text you are adding prior to the four closing characters may contain spaces and as far as I know can be as short or long as you wish it to be. Additional short or extensive typing or punctuation can then be added after the four closing characters, or use the return button and start another hyperlink on the next line if you wish to display more than one hyperlink, or to begin a list of hyperlinks, keep using the return key.
I do not know why, but when I first entered this with the actual characters typed as I've indicated, none showed up but there was a lot of empty space surrounding my explanation, which itself became one long line of hypertext which lead to a dead end, of course. Apparently displaying those small combinations of characters gives them power:-o Spooky stuff!

    Hi Gabe,
First, please check the suggestion above is helpful. I also suggest you removing all version of Office and re-install Office 2013.
We can try to run the application as an administrator and check if it works.
     1. Right click the shortcut of the application or the main application.
     2. Select properties.
     3. Select compatibility tab and select "Run this program as an administrator."
If there is anything I can do for you about this issue, don't hesitate to tell me.
    Best regards,
