Problem installing Free BSD 64-bit with VMware Player on Thinkpad W510

I installed VM Ware Player on the latest Thinkpad W510 with a 2.66ghz Intel processor. I am getting an error message indicating that the CPU doesn't support long mode. I was advised by the freenode #freeBSD channel that long mode is x86_64/amd64/emt64. This same channel also suggested that I tell vmware it was a 64bit guest. But I don't know how to do this. How do I do this? VMware Player didn't offer me any user options during the install. Is this something I should setup in the bios of the Thinkpad? Or something else? Is there more than one version of the VMware pLayer?

Look on BIOS if VT is enabled.
Best regards.

Boot Camp doesn't install the drivers. You have the drivers on a separate USB device if you followed directions. Once in Windows connect the USB drive with the driver software. It should startup automatically and install the drivers.
You don't even need to do that. As downloading the drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant can be unreliable, it is better to get the package directly from here:

Copy the .zip file to a USB flash drive or burn it to a DVD in OS X. Install Windows as normal, insert the flash drive/DVD in Windows, copy the .zip file to the hard drive, extract it, then run the setup executable.

  • Issue with VMware player - trying to install Windows 7 on a virtual machine

I'm currently using the basic version of VMware player (not the pro version)
I create a new virtual machine. VMware player automatically detects my Windows 7 bit installation disc
    in my attached CD/DVD drive.
in the next screen, i select my operating system version and fill in my windows license key
then there is a progress bar with the title "creating disc" which takes about 10 minutes to complete
after installation, the virtual machine launches.
It says (white on black background)
    Network boot from Intel E1000
    PXE-E53: no boot filename recived
    PXE-M0F Existing Intel PXE Rom.
    Operating system not found.
on the bottom of the virtual machine window it says "easy install is installing Windows 7 64 bit",
however my CD/DVD drive is not spinning and there is no progress leaving this alone for 30 minutes.
I then rebooted the Virtual Machine and went into the bios to update the boot order
with the CDrom 1st, then the hard drive and then the network.
I still get the same errors.
I also tried the same process with my Windows Xp installation disc, same issues
    Any advice would be appreciated

Jmattson, good idea I'll try the manual install. user "aka", I did check the bios, intel virtualization is enabled.

  • Problems: install oracle 10g 32 bits on RH 5.8 x64

    Hello,
Someone has given me an oracle 10g 32 bits to install on a Redhat 5.8 64 bits server (no other server available).
I have a lot of errors during the installation process
    exemple:
INFO: /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /oracle/client/10x_32/lib/libxml10.a when searching for -lxml10
    /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lxml10
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    I installed libxml10 64 and 32 bits on the system !
I would like to know if this configuration is POSSIBLE ???!
If yes, what is the solution / process to fix these compli. problems :-|
    Thanks for your help !

I've never seen any 32-bit software that DIDN'T run on a 64 bit OS, as long as the necessary libraries are installed.
I used this process: is it the good one ?

Tim does a very nice job with his stuff on oracle-base, but that is NOT the official documentation. Why not use ORACLE'S own installation guide? Have you seen http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15667/toc.htm
And why are you installing a a version of Oracle that is out of support?
And as long as you have a 64-bit OS, why would you want to run a 32-bit version of Oracle?

    Here are some possible solutions:
    1. The installation notes state that you must be logged on as Administrator to be able to install 9i. Are you logged on as the Administrator? Being logged on as user01 with Administrator priviledges isn't the same as Administrator.
    2. Is the disk full? If I remember my installation correctly, I needed 3 times the size of the files. The documentation will tell you how much space you need.
    Hope these two questions help

  • Cannot install Windows 7 (64-bit) with Bootcamp

I tried to install Windows 7 64-bit on a MacPro running MacOS 10.6.7 with Bootcamp Version 3.0.4 (325).
I get the following hardware information from 'About This Mac':
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro1,1
      Processor Name:          Dual-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          2
      Total Number Of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per processor):          4 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.33 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MP11.005C.B08
      SMC Version (system):          1.7f10
After I inserted the Windows installation DVD and boot it up, I got an empty screen that asked me to select boot type, 1 or 2.
The keyboard did not respond any input so the whole installation was hung.  Can someone shed some light on what may went wrong?

    You can
    Select CD-ROM Boot prompt
You just can't boot from the DVD without extra steps.
Apple uses UEFI on those Macs that are "blessed" as being compatible, and yours and mine have older 2005 era EFI32 that won't.
We also are stuck with 1.9GB usable RAM in 32-bit Vista/7 also, another blow.
And no firmware update to Unified EFI 2.x to make us "compatible." Has not stopped 1000s from doing so though.

  • Problems Installing ColdFusion 9 (64 bit) on Windows 7 and IIS 7.5

Problem:  Empty response for static Files including images, CSS and js files. The response code is 200 OK, but there is no actual response (it's empty).
The ColdFusion Administration web site works correctly except it's not displaying any images, css and js. Why it is serving up dynamic content and not static is a mystery.
Installed ColdFusion 9 (64 bit) Multiserver Option on Windows 7 running IIS 7.5.
I have verified that IIS 7.5 is correctly configured for Static Content for both the handler mappings and the modules.
The Configuration for IIS 7.5 install looks like this:
The ColdFusion web configuration tools shows that it is connected to all instances of IIS.
I have uninstalled ColdFusion9 and IIS 7.5, and reinstalled many times but get the same problem: Empty responses for Static Files.
    Help is appreciated.

To Clarify the blurry picture, this is what the IIS 7.5 install options look like:

WWW Services > Application Dev Features > .Net Extensibility and ASP.Net and CGI and ISAPI Extensions & ISAPI Filters

  • Problems installing NI-Kal 1.9 with Opensuse 11.1

I am trying to install Labview 8.6.1, Daqmx Base 3.2, and Ni-Kal 1.9 on a laptop running Opensuse 11.1 to use with a usb device, NI-9233.  I understand that 11.1 is not supported and we have successfully used 10.3, Labview 8.5, and Nikal 1.7 on another laptop.  However, we want to use the latest OS so stay more up to date.   I have used our previous steps of install that I posted here in case it helps.
The problem seems to either be with building or loading the nipalk module.  I have successfully installed Labview, Ni-Kal, and mx Base and can successfully run updateNIDrivers but when I run lsdaq I get the following:
    Detecting National Instruments DAQ Devices
    Found the following DAQ Devices:
    libnipalu.so failed to initialize
Perhaps you need to run updateNIDrivers
    /usr/local/bin/lsdaq: line 7:  4825 Aborted                 /etc/natinst/nidaqmxbase/bin/daqmxbase_listdevices
When I run a vi using the usb device, Labview simply crashes.  Before the successful install I had problems installing Ni-Kal.  Opensuse 11.1 installs a pae kernel by default so I reinstalled Suse without it, passed mem=4096 to the boot loader and built the new kernel and modules with the commands:
    make
    make modules_install
    make modules install
After these steps everything goes on without errors but I run into the problem I mentioned above.  Also, after this, no kernel modules are loaded.  I see no ni modules with lsmod.  I can manully load nikal but when I try to load nipalk I get:
     # modprobe nipalk
FATAL: Error inserting nipalk (/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/natinst/nipal/nipalk.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
    and niorbk gives:
      #modprobe niorbk
WARNING: Error inserting nipalk (/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/natinst/nipal/nipalk.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting niorbk (/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/natinst/nicore/niorbk.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
Has anyone seen this or know what the problem could be.  Thanks.

    Jeff
Thank you for posting to the forums. I have noticed that there is a common thread about NI-KAL breaking on openSuse 11.1 on our Linux Users Community.  That community is kept up by a couple of our Linux guys and one of them who is on there regularly is one of the developers so that is a good place to go for Linux support. As you mentioned openSuse 11.1 is not supported at this point because I know there have been issues with the install of certain drivers. If you do manage to find a work around please let us know as I know there are a lot of Linux users that would be interested to know, myself included.
The specific post about NI-KAL breaking on openSuse can be found here.  Hope this helps.

  • Problem installing Windows 7 64-bit on late 2013 iMac 27"

Is Windows 7 64-bit compatible with this computer?
    Hardware and software:
    • Late 2013 iMac 27", 3.5 GHz I7, 16 GB memory, 1 TB hard drive (no fusion drive)
    • Mac OS 10.9.1
    • USB thumb drive
    • Boot Camp Assistant 5.1.0
    • Windows 7 64-bit install disk iso image downloaded from Microsoft
    Install steps:
    1. Use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 7 install (from iso image) and Apple Support Software (creates WININSTALL USB drive)
    2. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create 50 GB Windows partition on iMac internal drive and start Windows install
    3. Complete initial install steps until given option to select install partition
    4. Select 50 GB partition. Error message that partition is not formatted correctly. Use Advance Options to format (presumably to NTFS)
    5. Select 50 GB partition again and click "Next"
    6. Get error message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
    7. Install quits at this point
I have successfully installed Win 7 on another computer (2010 Mac Pro) using these steps. I also tried installation on the iMac using an iso image created from my original Win 7 64-bit install disk, with the same installation error as above.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 and/or Boot Camp is compatible with this iMac. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am awaiting delivery on the exact model you have and have been researching how much trouble it will be to put 64 bit windows 7 ultimate on my machine when it gets here. I'm not pleased at what I've been reading so far. I have not seen the two other posts but yours is enough to concern me.
Have you also seen that 10.9.1 update may be responsible for this? I've seen where 10.9 caused some problems with the bootcamp app but then the process was completely hosed with the 10.9.1 update. Are you seeing this as well?
Being a life-long mac dude, it pains me when their stuff just doesn't work because it usually just does. ****, that's why I started on a mac in the first place.
The support site says that they come with 90 days of complimentary support. Is this not an issue they should be responsible for addressing via support? Or is that just one long wait on hold waiting to talk to somebody that won't consider this a pure apple issue?
I was also curious if your install .iso contains both 32 and 64 bit versions?

  • Problem installing XP on Qosmio G50 with preinstalled vista

Hello everyone, just joined, and after some browsing I believe 'll like this place.
I just bought a Qosmio G50 10 with preinstalled Vista and I would like to install XP on the second hard drive to have double-boot. It starts well but after it finishes loading drivers etc it says "starting windows" and then I get a blue screen.
I know the installation CD is good. This portable is new on the market and there isn't much info about it.
Even Toshiba does not seem to have drivers for it to download.
Reading here and elsewhere shows that a driver problem might be the cause, but I need help.
    Thanks.

The BSOD is because XP doesn't have a driver for your hard disk, so it panics because it can't find the hard drive.
I also had this problem, following the steps at http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t124213.html solved it.
Basically, here is what you have to do:
    1. Get a copy of Win XP with SP2 to get the SATA support. Note that it _does not_ have drivers for your HD, so this by itself is not enough!
    2. Get the Intel Matrix Manager "F6" drivers from Intel website ( http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Filter_Results.aspx?strOSs=All&strTypes=All&Produc tID=2101&OSFullName=All%20Operating%20Systems&lang =eng - be sure to pick the F6 Floppy Driver package that matches your 32- or 64-bit XP ).
    3. Download a copy of nLite to use to make a custom Windows XP Install CD
    4. Copy your WinXP CD (all the files) to some folder on your HD.
    5. Unzip the Intel Drivers.
    6. Run nLite, pointing it at the folder you created in step 4. Choose only the options to add drivers and to create an ISO image. For the add drivers, use the multi-driver folder option and point it at your unzipped Intel drivers folder from step 5. You want the "text mode" driver - pick the one that matches your controller (ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI).
    7. When you get to the disk image page, DON'T try to use nLite to burn the CD. Have it create an image (.iso). nLite always locked up for me if I tried to use it to burn CD.
    8. Find your .iso in explorer, right click and do Send To menu to bring up the TOSHIBA burn image to CD. Use that to burn it.
This will get you an XP SP2 CD that will successfully install on your G50. At least, it did for me, using the Vista 64 environment that came loaded with the laptop. You will also need to go into BIOS (er, Hardware Setup) by holding down ESC when you power on the laptop. On the first page, on the right hand side, change the boot order to one of the options that list CD-ROM first. Otherwise the laptop will happily ignore your shiny new install CD.
    Hope that helps!

  • Want to install Win 7 32-bit with Bootcamp on a 2009 iMac 24in running Mavericks. Do I have any good options?

I need to get Win 7 32 bit running on 2009 iMac 24-in, on a Bootcamp partition. Problem is I'm running Mavericks on that machine, and from everything I've read, Bootcamp 5 doesn't support 32-bit anything. Is it possible to do so without downgrading MacOS to an earlier version? I will if I have to. Would it be possible/advisable to boot to 10.6.8 from a removable drive and create the Bootcamp partition on the internal (10.9.x) drive? Any other options that can get me running Windows faster? Under Parallels it's just too slow.

As a possible alternative, Is it possible to only load Win 7 to the machine without bootcamp? Could I simply partition the drive for Windows and install? It's not that I want to run Win 7 -- MacOS is a far better solution for me. But for my bookkeeper, who will use this system extensively, MacOS is a foreign landscape and her software is win-based. I don't want to pay her to learn Mac-ese. And I don't want to buy a PC!
    Thoughts?
