Problem installing osx 10.1 on my imac g3 lime 400mhz

Hey guys i got mac os 9.1 on my imac when i try to upgrade it to 9.2.1 it fails and says it cant be installed but then when i try to install osx 10.1 that wont go no further than select a destination as the hard drive icon is grayed out any ideas? Thanks jason

Hey Jason,
Wasn't this originally a 233 tray? Which should be a 333 Lime tray? If so:
"If you have a hard drive over 8 GB in size, you must partition it, and the partition containing OS X must be completely within the first 8 GB of space or you will not be able to run OS X. (If you are creating the partition within OS X, it must be 7.45 GB or smaller as reported by Disk Utility, because sometimes a GB is billion bytes and sometimes it's 1,073,741,824 bytes.)"

Shut the power clear off, wait a minute or 2 and restart and see if that clears the problem.

  • Installed OSX 10.6.8 on iMac and now I have two icons in my dock for time machine and can't access either one.  I don't think it is backing up to time capsule either.  Anyone else have this issue?

I installed OSX 10.6.8 on iMac and now I have two icons for time machine in my dock.  When I try to access either one the wheel goes round and round.  I seem to have lost all back ups that were on Time Capsule.  Not sure how to check or what to do.  Thanks.

See what happens if you select the TM icon in your menubar, and select Enter Time Machine there.
If that doesn't help, try the things in #E4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting

Try to be more explicit about your problem. As descriptive as possible. You also need to tell us what your computer model is and what version of OS X you are now using.

  • Install OSX 10.4.7 on iMac G3 creates panic messages, someone plz help me?!

    Hi,
I got this iMac G3 with OS 9.1 installed on the hdd. I first updated the firmware and then swapped the hdd for an empty one (with was once used on a windows system)
I try to install OSX 10.4.7 (original grey cd's for iMac) on my iMac G3
Short after reading the cd I get the following screen: grey with a black window witch says: "you need to restart your computer .Hold down the Powerbutton for several seconds or press the restart button" in several languages.
shown over this screen I see multiple lines with several panic and kernel messages.
the first line says: panic (cpu 0 caller 0x002E49D0): unable to find driver for this platform: "Powermac2,1".
I pressume that the last line mentions the problem witch causes the hanging?
    Last line says:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.3: Tue Aug 8 18:13:19 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.11.2obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
    panic: We are hanging here...
I strolled off the internet using this last message to find an answer for this "panic" but no results.
Pressing d or c while starting up doesn't matter, I instantly get the screen as discribed.
I did reset-nvram and then reset-all, still the same screen shown.
And yes, I'm new to the "appleworld", I've had it with windows, so hopefully i'm only making newbie errors
Anybody here who can help me out?
PS: i made a picture of the screen, but don't know how to upload it here (might not be possible anyway)

    HI Eppie (gek hoor)
I upgrade a lot of G3 from OS9 to Tiger. As we speak/type I'm doing a G3 500 MHz. I created a Tiger clone on a Hard disk so I can do the upgrade also on G3s without a DVD player.
The process USED to work smooth until a few minutes ago:
-- I upgraded my clone to 10.4.11 first: the clone disk was connected to a already long ago upgraded G3: went well
-- I upgraded the OS9 G3 on the firmware level
-- Tried to boot the G3 from the clone disk>>>BANG crash
-- Fortunately I had also a 10.4.4 clone on the same disk (other partition) and the target booted very well from that partition.
    Conclusion (until now)
iMac G3 with OS9 on the HDD and upgraded firmware won't leap to recent versions of tiger (I don't know where the break point is it's between 10.4.4 and 10.4.11
I'm right now transfering 10.4.4 and for the sake of the experiment I will look after the the target G3 is running 10.4.4. if I can boot from the external HDD partition with 10.4.11. If it works I'll transfer that one and having a clean 10.4.11 on a 7 old imac
    Hope this helps

  • Cant install osx 10.0 on my imac g3

Hi guys ive been trying all day to install osx 10 on my imac as i put a bigger hard drive in there and formated it useing the partition thing on the osx 10 disc after i do that i go to install but it wont pass the part where it asks where u want to install the software to but for some reason the hard drive is greyed out both my partitions are the same but i can instal mac os 9.2.1 with no problems any ideas as this is my first mac and i must say its a pain cause i cant use it at the moment

    Apple Imac G3:
The problem you are experiencing is explained in the article Mac OS X: Disk Appears Dimmed (or "Grayed Out") in the Installer.
A couple of observations, if you don't mind. I note that you are trying to install OS X 10.0. I suggest that you don't even bother to install anything lesss than 10.2.2 or later. Earlier versions of OS X were essentially Beta versions, and will not perform as well. Your iMac will support up to Panther (10.3.9) natively, and with the help of XPostFacto you can install and run Tiger (10.4x). You can purchase universal installers from applerescue.
The 8 GB rule requires that you install OS X on the first 8 GB of the HDD. This can be a problem if you intend to use OS X for most of your computing needs, as you will have to have some things on a separate partition from your OS and Applications. Apparently there is a workaround that may enable you to install OS X on a larger partition. (Hold it, a minute guys!) Take a look at this thread to seek what I am talking about. Admittedly, the thread refers to a different computer, but if the WallStreet, why not an iMac?
    Good luck.

  • How to install osx 10.6 on Apple iMac "Core Duo" 1.83 with 1 gb ram

Apple iMac "Core Duo" 1.83 with 1GM Ram and Preinstalled Tiger 10.4.11,
How can i Install leopard 10.6 on this imac, please give me the link also to osx 10.6

You can purchase 10.6 from the Apple on-line store for $30.  Also, OWC, www.macsales.com sells it for $26.
You would be better off with more memory, 2-4 GB would be important.

  • Problems installing OSX Lion - new Mac Mini 2011

    Hi!
I'm having major problem with my brand new Mac Mini.
I wanted to upgrade it right away after reading so many succeful upgrading reports on various forums so I bought a 120GB Intel 320 SSD disk and 2x4 GB of Kingston 1333mhz ram. I swapped the drives right away and idiotically used to original drive in a case to create an external installation USB-drive (my 4GB USB drives didn't work).
I then created a bootable USB-disk with the external original drive and tried to install but only get the circle with slash after selecting the drive in the "options" menu. If I remove the USB-drive I get a flashing folder icon. If start holding down Command + S I get a message saying that the "version of OSX is not supported on this platform".
I also tried using the Recovery Assistant HD to create a bootable recovery tool but that gives the same results.
    In short:
I can't install OSX Lion on a brand new Mac Mini with upgraded HD and Ram. I don't have the original installation anymore.
    Am I out of luck?

Internet Recovery solved this problem. Option+Command+R.

  • Unable to re install osx after erasing HD on iMac

    Hi
I have a 2007 iMac 4,1 Intel core duo 2ghz that refused to boot after crashing.
After much searching of support articles i have tried all suggestions.
It would not accept the original [tiger] install discs[superdrive spits them out] so i used my macbookpro to erase the hd and then install disc 1 via target mode.
The iMac now gets as far as select destination, in the installer, but the hard drive does not appear [waited more than 1 hour].
I have the leopard upgrade dvd also.
I ran disk utility verify and its says vol 1 iMac appears ok
    1 HFS volume checked
    volume passed verification
but verify disk permissions says first aid failed- no valid packages
Does anyone have any solutions that will solve this, as i am no expert on these matters and really need step by step help.
    Many thanks in advance
    P

    I am confused!
    You said.
    Please confirm:
You want to erase the drive on the iMac after booting from the Macbook Pro, with the iMac in TDM. Is that correct?
YES I did that so as to install osx install disk 1.
When you boot in TDM and run DU off the MBP hard drive, does it recognize the iMac hard drive?
YES i erased the iMac HD and installed osx disk 1.
Note that you cannot erase / reformat the drive from which the computer is booted.
    BUT u said this previously!
    Try this:
Repeat this first part, then reformat the drive on the iMac, using Disk Utility on the installer disk. Select Mac OS extended, GUID partition.
Then run the installer in the usual way.
    details are
    mount point : /
    format: mac os extended [journaled]
    owners enabled : yes
    folders : 5,563
    cap 465
    avail 46
    used 5.0 gb
    files 11,728
    write status : read \write
    S.M.A.R.T status : verified
    verify: vol passed verification
permissions verify ; error no valid packages
    installer hangs at destination?
What about  this?   permissions verify ; error no valid packages

  • Macbook won't startup, problems installing OSX with Firewire

    Hi,
I have a Macbook that has been unable to startup correctly for several months, and finally got around to taking a look at it. It usually stays at either the blue/grey loading screens, but occasionally it will make it to the login window, where it will then just stop functioning.
I was able to use a Firewire cable hooked up to my iMac, and when i turned on target disk mode, I was able to browse around some of the folders on my Macbook. Eventually, I will try to get into a folder, only for the connection to be timed out.
I don't care about the files on the Macbook (I've long forgotten them, and have done fine without whatever they were), so I tried popping in the OSX install CD into my iMac so I can install OSX on my Macbook via Firewire. I can't use the Macbook drive, because it has somehow become sunken into the case, and the slot for the drive is not lined up with the slot on the case.
I load up the OSX install CD application, hit the button to restart my iMac, and.... nothing. It just retarts itself every 15 seconds. If I pull out the Firewire cable, it still happens. I can't even get to gray Apple startup screen unless I take the install CD out.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm pretty poor right now, and would like to get this laptop running so i can give it to my sister.

If you want to use the iMac's DVD drive to reinstall OS X, this is the way to go:
Insert the install disc into the machine while it is running, then *shut down* the iMac.
Connect both computers using the Firewire cable.
Power on the iMac with the T key held down.
Power on the MacBook with the Option key held down.
You should see the iMac's hard drive & the OS X install disc as boot options. Choose the install disc.
From there, you can give reinstalling OS X another try.

  • Problem installing OSX 10.4 from Firewire DVD drive

Hi, I'd be very grateful if anyone can help... I've been trying to install OSX 10.4 from DVD loaded in an external Firewire Lacie DVD drive and haven't been successful yet. I have tried instructing startup from the DVD in System Preferences, holding Option on startup and selecting the DVD and also holding 't' on startup, which I was informed forced startup from an external Firewire device (this resulted in a large Firewire logo floating round the screen but after 10 minutes or so hadn't progressed into full startup). Having read some bits of info found on Apple support I can see there is some issue about installing OSX 10.4 from a DVD drive other than an internal Apple drive (although I can't see any explanation why). Could someone please let me know if there is another way of doing this? – I mainly want to get 10.4 installed because I want to get a new ipod which requires 10.4 rather than 10.3. Thanks very much, Sam

Some external DVD drives support startup. Some do not.
Holding down the T key at startup makes the Mac go into FireWire Target Disk Mode. It will not help you start up from the DVD drive.
If you have another Mac with FireWire and a DVD drive, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop. Then, you can use that other Mac to startup from the DVD and run the installer, pointing to your Mac's hard drive for the installation.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
I don't know of any other way, if the external DVD drive does not support start up.

  • Problems installing OSX

Hi there! I have a 13" macbook. My hard drive failed so I got a new one, and went to install OSX on it. It's an Apple OSX Install Disc, 1 & 2, and it takes me to the installer, asks me to select language then tells me "This software cannot be installed on this computer." Restart or Startup Disk.
Why is it doing this? Please advise... I miss my MacBook!
    Thanks in advance!
    Sarah

    Hi smross,
I'm not quite familiar with what an Apple OEM MacBook Install Disc is, there are typically three kinds of discs:
1.) The System Restore disc that came with your computer
2.) The OS X Retail disc that's sold in stores
3.) The replacement discs produced by Apple that serve the same function as option #1
Typically if you get a message about incompatibility with a disc it's because the disc you're using is older than what came on the machine. For example, I can't use a Leopard retail disc on my MacBook Pro because it's 10.5.4 as the version and my machine came with 10.5.7 pre-installed.
Where did you get these discs?

  • Problems installing OSX on new HD... Help!

    Hi
I have a Macbook Pro 13'' (mid 2010), it never gave me any trouble, a week ago or so my HD died, naturally my Apple Care is gone by now and a friend told me that Hard Drive replacement wasn't all that dificult if you knew what to do, so I got a new 1tb Western Digital HD and with some help from ifixit I succesfully replaced my drive.
I don't really need Mountain Lion so I thought I could simply install the original OS that came with my mac (OSX Snow Leopard). I thought I did the hole thing correctly, I got into Disk Utilities and checked that the partition type was "GUID Patition Table" formated the new Hard Drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and then installed OSX, but after a couple of minutes it just says that the install failed and no reason why, just "click restart and try installing again".
I'm not a computer savy person I just follow instructions, you know? So now I don't know what to do and I really need this thing to work.
    Thanks in advance, guys.

    Hi!
Thank yoy guys! I did used the disc which shipped with my MBP. I don't really know how to do a NVRAM reset but I'll reasearch how, and let you know how it goes.
In case that doesn't work I'll return the HD and exchange it for a Hitachi, I guess, since I believe that's the one that my MBP originally had. **** it! I actally thougth the WD was a smart choice considering reliability and warranty.

  • Hello - When I installed OSX 10.8 on my iMac, all my bookmarks and the bookmarks bar were gone.  On my two MB Pros they carried over with no problem.  How can I retrieve them?  Thanks

All my bookmarks and bookmark bar entries were gone when I installed Mountain Lion on my IMac.  When I installed in on my two MB Pros, they carried over without a problem.  How can I retrieve them?  Thanks.
    jn

Make an archive copy from one of the MBP (File>Export Bookmarks).  You may not need it, but if things sync the wrong way on iCloud, you may lose them on all your devices.
Then check out iCloud on the iMac. Is your stuff on iCloud.com?  Maybe try logging out and back in again.
