Problem installing ubuntu in virtual box

Hello lately i tried installing ubuntu LTS in virtual box 3.2 using an ISO image downloaded in hard disk but every time i try to run it, it says upgrade it to new ubuntu 10.04 LTS though this is the same one i installed. The softwares which i downloaded earlier are all gone. What might be the reason for this please do let me know.........I was willing to try ubuntu but this is giving me a headache now.
Thanks for any help afforded

Sanjaya

Thanks for your reply,
Yeah i too guessed that the problem might be that it is booting from the iso image in the hard disk so i just moved it to another lokation as i did not know how to unmount the image and now after i have done so the problem of self rebooting is gone atleast for now. Sorry i could not make it much clear was to what the problem was, thanks anyways.

How can I minimize and maximize Solaris 10 installed on VM virtual Box.
    Thanks

Solaris is working just fine. Everything is ok. now since I open Solaris via VM Virtual box, the Solaris main page fills only half of the monitor. I can minimize/maximize the Virtual Box. But Solaris dimensions are fix and doesn't change. This leaves me a little room to open applications on Solaris. I had the same problems with my Ubuntu, by installing adds-on it was fixed. For Solaris I installed “Guest additions”, didn’t help.

The Host Key should be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the VirtualBox machine's window. A pop-up message will also appear when you first start up the virtual machine, explaining that you will need the host key to escape out.

    Hi,
if you don't have any idea google is you best friend.
Ask the question you posted here to google, and you will find a lot of good sites with information on this.
However, there is also a good guide, to setup a RAC in Virtualbox, which might answer most of your questions:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVirtualBox.php
(Even if you don't intend to install a RAC the steps, till you install the Oracle Software, are the same...).
BTW: Found this via. google ;)

  • Uninstalling Sun Virtual Box and Windows 7 from Macbook Pro?

    Hi everyone!
Can anyone tell me how to properly UN-install Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta from my Macbook Pro so I can reinstall Windows 7 Beta thru Boot Camp?
I recently installed Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta on my Macbook Pro. It works fine, but there are some things about Virtual Box I am not happy with. I'm told that uninstalling both Windows 7 and Virtual Box and reinstalling Windows 7 through Boot Camp will be better for what I want and Windows 7 will run much better that way.

    goducks14 wrote:
Thank you - I really appreciate your response. I did delete the .dmg so I guess I will have to re-download it from Sun and then uninstall it as you suggested.
Maybe you can answer another quick question? I am hearing both YES and NO in regards to being able to install the Windows 7 Beta using Boot Camp. Any problems that you might be aware of?
If you visit our BootCamp forum you will find many users running Win7http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1244
While Win7 is not supported, for many users, that's not important.
When I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit on this MBP, it was not supported and I installed it under Tiger and a beta of BootCamp! It still works. Experimenting is fun and a great learning experience.
Just be sure you have a viable backup - SuperDuper!, CCC or TM before installing BootCamp and Win7 and you always have a path for a recovery should anything go wrong.
    Enjoy!

  • [solved] Virtual Box

I have windows 7 installed in a virtual box. It worked perfectly. Then I upgraded my system to the lastest linux kernel. Now Virtual Box says that vboxdrv is not loaded so I can't boot windows.
    When I did this:
    [meskarune@Lychee ~]$ modprobe vboxdrv
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.pacsave, it will be ignored in a future release.
    FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found.
I tried to see if I could update virtual box...but yaourt is not finding it. There is another topic on that here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=74843
should I try to update it manually and see if that helps? Is there something I need to do with the new kernel?
Last edited by Meskarune (2009-06-26 16:11:09)

heh. ok now I feel dumb. Upgraded the package and saw the note:
"run vbox_build_module as root every time the kernel is upgraded"
    now it works.

No however you will need to bring your own copy of Windows.
what i mean is are any driver installations required?
The driver installation(s) is done by Virtualbox during installation.
I have not fully tested this software however you can find some good information [HERE|http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VirtualBox].

  • Install stuck: SBS 2011 Essentials on a Virtual Box

I’m trying to do a test install of SBS 2011 Essentials on a Virtual Box virtual machine running on a Win7 64-bit machine. I put the install partition on an external
    drive.
The install stops on a window that is titled Installing Windows. The screens says: “There was a problem during the installation. To restart the installation
click Restart. You can also view the installation error logs.”
When I open those installation error logs, I see no error. (It does have Info and Warning lines.)
I’m stuck there. If I could paste in the the contents of the error logs I would, but I can’t copy from the VM until there is an installed OS.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello Rob,
There may still be a problem with two things.'
    1) Installing it on your external hard drive.  If it is a 'usb' drive, then it seems at times the software\drivers still causes some type of conflict depending on what type of system you have.
    2) Your network interface card is configured set.
Going off the assumption that you have the latest virtual box software, your problem may be point number '1'
Solution that works for some: Installed the virtual machine locally. (Remember, you can still set the disk dynamically to 160 whether you have the space locally or not)  Then transfered it to an external drive after everything  was installed and
    working.
Caveat: Shame to say, you may  not have local storage  large enough to hold the vm. This is why you probably bought the external drive in the first place.  Hope this helps. Just find a machine that will allow you to create the vm locally first
    if you can.

  • [SOLVED] Guest Arch in Virtual Box Internet Problems

I have installed Arch a few times already in virtual machines on Virtual Box and each time it is unable to configure the internet connection properly.  Having gone through the beginner wiki-pages on starting with Arch, I have tried "ping -c 3 www.google.com" and get "ping: unknown host www.google.com".  However, IP addresses usually work with 0% packet loss.
I then followed the "hwdetect" instruction and that yielded "-bash: hwdetect: command not found".  The command "modprobe pcnet32" does not yield an error and returns nothing.
I have also tried other methods

    Hi,
    Pretty much the same here
That is strange but adding "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to /etc/resolv.conf enables me to access the internet. 192.168.0.1 is of course the IP of the host computer's vitual card but what is strange is: I need to use dhcpcd from guest to be given an IP that isn't even in the same range as 192.168.0.1 (for instance 10.0.2.15)!!
So to basically, host PC has that virtual ethernet card with static IP 192.168.0.1 and internet connection shared (don't know if this is compulsory though) and guest uses dhcp, is given 10.0.2.15 (don't ask me where it gets it from because I disabled it on VirtualBox). Then I just have to add "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to resolv.conf and I'm good... till dhcpcd rewrites the resolv.conf. How could we set dhcp to use a particular DNS?
As you can see, I am not a DNS expert. Using static IPs for both would be great but it doesn't work
    Does it help?
The 10.x.x.x.x address range is assigned because you are most probably using NAT networking on the Virtual Box configuration.
    Try with 'Bridged'.
If all goes well you shouldn't need to fiddle with /etc/resolv.conf.
Still, if you still need to change /etc/resolv.conf, put your changes in a file called /etc/resolv.conf.head which will survive
the changes that sometimes DHCP does on /etc/resolv.conf.

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Guest Virtual Box OSE problem

So I am installing my Arch Linux as a Guest in my Ubuntu partition, through Virtual Box OSE (3.2.8). I followed the wiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … lBox_Guest ) but still have an issue:
sudo pacman -S kernel26-headers xorg gcc make
    sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
    sudo /mnt/cdrom/VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
But It fails on Shared folders, and cannot recognize X:
:: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions Kernel Modules [BUSY]
:: Building the main Guest Additions module [DONE]
:: Building the shared folder support module [FAIL]
(Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find otu what went wrong)
:: Warning: Unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing X Window System drivers.
:: Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components [Done]
    /var/log/vboxadd-install.log states:
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9: error: unknown field 'clear_inode' specified in initalizer
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9 warning: initalization from incompatible pointer type.
Which is strange, because as far as I know, clear_inode is part of the linux headers.
Any idea why this is happening? Do I just need to update VirtualBox to a newer version?

    Updating Virtualbox fixed the issue.

  • Installing Oracle Linux 5.8 on Virtual Box

I'm trying to install Oracle Linux 5.8 on Virtual Box. I have downloaded V31120-01 and burned to the DVD, I think successfully.
However, when I start the Virtual machine, I get the Opening screen, "Oracle Linux" the little picture of the penguin guy, etc, so I think my DVD is good.
The screen says, "To install or upgrade in graphical mode, press the <enter> key." So I do.
Several lines of text flow across the screen, but then the process seems to stop with no prompt on what to do next or any indication that an error has occurred, it just stops.
The last lines I can see are:
    ACPI: bus type pci registered
    PCI: Using configuration type 1
    ACPI: Interpreter enabled
ACPI: Using PIC for interrupt routing
    ACPI: No dock devices found
ACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI0] (0000:00)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKA] (IRQs *5 9 10 11)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKB] (IRQs 5 9 10 *11)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKC] (IRQs 5 9 *10 11)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKD] (IRQs 5 *9 10 11)

    pnp: PnP ACPI init
pnp: PnP ACPI: found 5 devices
    usbcore: registered new driver usbfs
    usbcore: registerd new driver hub
PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
PCI: If a device doesn't work, try 'pci=routeirq". If it helps, post a report
    NetLabel: Initializing
NetLabel: domain hash size = 128
    NetLabel: protocols = UNLABELED CIPS0v4
NetLabel: unlabeled traffic allowed by default
    ACPI: DMAR not present
    PCI-GART: No AMC northbridge found.
    NET: Registered protocol family 2
I'm not sure if it's waiting for some input from me, or if there is a problem, but nothing happens beyond this point until I power down the virtual machine.

There is no need to burn a DVD because Virtualbox can directly mount and boot from the .iso image you downloaded. It is usually a good idea to check the md5 checksum of your download with the number provided by the download page to verify your download is not corrupted. There are no problems installing any version of Oracle Linux under Virtualbox provided you have the right hardware. I suggest to check the Virtualbox documentation.
