Problem installing vista/xp on a mac pro, installers don't see bootcamp

hello there!
recently, a video post production studio i work for purchased a new penryn-based mac pro (2x3.0 ghz, 6gb ram, nvidia 8800gtx).
yesterday i wanted to install vista onto it to be able to help other windows machines in the studio with 3d studio max rendering jobs (8 cores should do wonders for that), but i ran into a weird obstacle.
this mac has 5 internal sata drives - one (320gb) for the system, and 4 disks (750gb each) in raid0 set (just a temporary setup until the studio purchases a fiber optic card with external disks). the DVD drive is an IDE one.
this is the first time i'm setting up windows on a mac, so i could be doing something wrong, even though i doubt it - it seems very straightforward.
so i created a 32gb partition on the system disk (the only one that's not in raid) using boot camp assistant, and started vista sp1 x64 install (boot camp recognized the install dvd).
after a reboot, vista started it's setup routine. everything was fine until it reached the part where i should select the destination partition for vista. this is the weird part: vista installer sees all 4 750gig drives from the raid, but it doesn't see my system drive (320gig) which has Macintosh HD and BOOTCAMP partitions on it. vista even sees any usb drives connected.
doesn't seem logical, as all sata drives are on the same controller (at least that's what leopard system profiler says).
i thought it had something to do with the fact i'm trying to install 64bit vista, so i tried with windows xp sp2 (x86), but the same thing happened.
i searched all over, but couldn't find anyone with the same problem.
any thoughts?

I would pull all the drives except your boot drive. Makes it easier.
32GB is pretty small actually for Vista x64. And the SP1 patch process can temporarily use another 10GB. Also, you are running off the slow inner tracks of your drive, which is half performance of outer tracks.
Most people opt for stock 2.8GHz Penryn - not a huge benefit from going with 3GHz, but that is beside the point.
Always good to disconnect any device during the install except what you have to use (keyboard, mouse) which can interfere.
You MUST reformat the 32GB from FAT to NTFS before you can install. That is where most people stop. You have to DELETE and then CREATE that BOOTCAMP 32GB (Advanced Options) before you can proceed with installation.
You don't want 32-bit version if you want to access more than 1.9GB RAM.
Lots of threads here in BootCamp, in Mac Pro Discussion, and MacRumors Windows on Mac.

  • Cannot install Vista Ultimate 64bits on Mac Pro 2008

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Vista Ultimate 64bits on my new Mac Pro (2008, 2x Quad Core, 3x 500GBHDD, 16 GB Ram), but Vista is unable to find a correct partition type.
The first thing I did was to install a 4th HD, and I constantly received an error 0x80004005 which seems to be too generic.
Then I tried to install it on the 3rd HD (Bay 2 is where my OS X startup disk is located btw) but here no way neither....Windows cannot find a valid partition.....
I tried to partition it manually in MBR...same problem....
    Then with BootCamp assistant...same problem...
I also tried to use Vista Business 64 SP1, same problem...
Do you have any idea ?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    Hello,
Thanks for your answer, but unfortunately I'm still stuck...
    To resume the situation :
I put a brand new 250GB SATA in the bay 4.
I start Bootcamp Assistant and tell him that I want to use this new disk for Windows and then start Vista x64 install.
Vista sees 2 partitions on this new disk :
    Disk 3 Partition 1 : 200 MB (Primary)
    Disk 3 Partition 2 : 230 GB (Primary)
If I try to use the P2 for the install, I have to format it first. Once formatted, Vista says : This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.
If I try to use the 200 MB (just for fun..), then I also have to format it, but here I receive the error message 0x8000xxxx
    So clearly I'm lost...
Could it be related to the 16 GB RAM ? Too much for Vista ?? I don't believe as this is Vista x64...
    Thanks for your help, ideas..
    Patrick

  • Anyone having problems installing Boot Camp with New Mac Pro 2.8?

I just get blank screen after it restarts with XP disk. I'm using a vga - dvi adapter with a apple 17" display..
I've phoned apple and read up on here but nobody seems to know. I just wondered whether my 2008 Mac Pro was faulty...
    Please can you help?
    cheers

Are you getting a white screen after the Mac reboots? If so, try disconnecting all non-essential USB/FW devices.
I had the exact same problem and I went through a long, stressful process of elimination to get it working, even to the extent of using my MacBook as an external drive through target disk mode!
It turned out to be my iMage USB camera. Even after successfully installing Windows I have to disconnect it before using Bootcamp.
    I Hope this helps.

  • Problems installing windows on a clean Mac Pro internal drive - issues and questions

    Hey,
I have a Mac Pro mid 2010 with the following drive configurations:
3x120GB SSD in a RAID-0 as Boot (OS X 10.8.6) and SSD Scratch (working files)
3x4TB HDD in a RAID-0 as Master (data) and HDD Scratch (downloads)
1x100GB SSD (Spare...to install windows on)
I have literally tried every possible way of installing Windows 8 on that single SSD...both using bootcamp and without.
I can get it installed and working, install all the drivers/updates/software...involving multiple reboots into windows. Everything seems fine, and i shut down and boot into OS X, which works perfectly as expected. BUT, when i try and boot into Windows again (using <option> key at startupand selecting the windows volume, called "EFI Boot" which i did not name) I can log in and start using apps and then 20-40 seconds later i get the BSOD.
I can't for the life of me figure out why.
It's the easiest thing in the world to partition a single OSX drive to boot windows ON THE SAME DRIVE, but i can't seem to boot stably into a standaloe internal drive.
NOTE: I prepare the Windows drive by formatting the entire thing to "Free Space" using disk utility in Mac OS X, and can see that there are no partitions (EFI or otherwise) on the drive. Then I pull all the other drives except the target drive, reboot with a Windows 8 USB drive (created by BootCamp Assistant on my macbook air, because apparently some genius thought that task was too complicated for a Mac Pro...jks) and install from there.  The funny part is that i can pick out the target drive in the windows setup, it's registering as 1 disk/partition of UNALLOCATED SPACE, as expected, but there is a warming that windows cannot be installed on this drive because my computer does not support booting to this disk, and that i should check that it's controller is enabled in the BIOS.....which to the best of my knowledge is not used by intel-macs, which use UEFI. But i can still click "Next", so I do and install Windows and boot to this drive, restarting and installing software updates and drivers as mentioned above.
The BSOD seems to pop up only after i've rebooted to Mac OS X and then try to go BACK to Windows 8.
The version of windows 8 and install USB were checked using my macbook air, and they work flawlessly. ASLO that warning about not being able to boot to the drive during windows setup isn't present.
I'm wondering if the fact the the RAID volumes are a software RAID, using Disk Utility in OSX is causing windows some issues...which makes no sense.
I'll keep playing, but I'm not confident I'm ever going to find a solution.
    Somebody be my hero...

    Hey Hatter,
    Another question for you:
I can't seem to use system preferences>>startup disk to boot into windows. When I select windows and then restart i get a black "BIOS-like" screen which then cuts out and a message is displayed that says "there is no bootable disc"
This stumped me, because I know i can boot into windows from the boot screen (holding down option and selecting "EFI Boot" which apparently is what my windows drive is called.
because of my Mac OSX Raid arrays, i had to install windows by formatting a drive to HFS+ (GUID) pratition table, then repartition to "Free Space" then using an install usb that i made with my macbook air, pull all my other drives and install by selecting the usb drive to boot from.
I went into disk utility to see if I can repair the disk, and disk utility says that the disk has to EFI partition and that we won;t be able to boot from it....which is very confusing because i can boot from it.
Windows 8 apparentl;y uses UEFI from my research....so i'm utterly stumped.
I beleive this is also the cause of my newly purchased graphics card Mac Edition HD 7950, throwing me a BSOD when i select to boot in windows from the boot menu...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Problems installing Windows 7 on the Mac Pro 3,1

I am having huge issues intalling WIndows 7 on this Mac Pro. I bought 2 new SSDs one for OSX and one for Windows. OSX is running great and i ran bootcamp assistant and selected the second SSD and chose to use intire drive and rebooted to start the installation. Everything starts but installer gives an error saying it could not be installed on that drive. I searched the forums and found that you have to remove all ither drives while installing windows so i rebooted and tried again and everything went fine. once everything was done, all updates installed, bootcanp drivers instelled etc I shutdown and pluged the othe drive back in and windows never booted again. I removed all drives but the windows drive and same thing, no boot. I have erased the drived and gone through the whole process several times with same results everytime.

Well I finally got it running smooth again, turns out that one of the windows updates changed the way the licensing works and for some odd reason it no longer works on Mac, go firgure lol. I ended up giving my windows 7 license to a friend who just built a PC so it worked fine for him but I am out $139 .
To get it working again I had to take my Mac Pro to work and let the IT guys install the Enterprise Edition and activate it againist the companies activation server. Works great now but it means I will have to take it to work every 6 months now for activation
I wish Microsft would stop making things so hard for us Mac guys.

  • After installing 10.9.3 my Mac Pro 2013 doesn't see the third display

Does anybody know what to do... My Mac Pro 2013 has 3 displays, with thunderbolt adapter each. After upgrading to 10.9.3 one display (of 3) is always "abcsent". I attached displays to different buses, changed thunderbolt inputs — nothing helps. The configuration of displays changes, but always one of them (every time not the same) is black... Who knows what to do? Thank you in advance!

The following steps have been reported to solve the problem. Probably not all are necessary.
    1. Reset the System Management Controller.
    2. Reset the PRAM.
    3. Install the Combo updater.

  • Problems installing OSX 10.8 on Mac Pro 3.1

When I try to install Mountain Lion, my computer goes through the initial process all the way to the reset prompt. Once my computer resets, it doesn't install the OS and instead returns me back to the account login prompt. What is happening?

Did you get this version of 10.8 Mountain Lion by purchasing it from the Mac App Store?
A version that "shipped in the box" with another Model Mac (or a re-download of that software) does not contain "Drivers for every appropriate model Mac" and cannot boot a different model.
It would kernel panic at the Restart because it could not find the family Driver for that Mac.

    no touch,
to boot from your original grey Mac OS X Install DVD, you’ll need to hold down the C key as you start up your MacBook Pro.
Which model MacBook Pro do you have, and which version of Mac OS is noted as being on your grey installation DVD? (It can be found on the lower left of your Mac OS X Install DVD.)

  • Windows Vista doesn't recognize Mac Pro RAM

I have installed Windows Vista Business on my Mac Pro using Boot Camp, and have found some anomalies that seem strange. It is basically working well (for Windows....).
    1. I installed this on a 500Gb HD on my Mac Pro. This machine is a fully configured box doing video editing, with extensive AV files. It has all four drive bays filled, 3 of them with 1Tb drives, the thrid with a single 500Gb drive. I was a bit surprised to find that Boot Camp won't allow partitioning of its OSX installed boot HD beyond a Mac Partition and the Boot Camp paritition, or a secondary entire HD dedicated to Windows. This is not very practical with these large drives, since even though HD storage is fairly cheap, I don't want to give Microsoft more than maybe 100gb on a drive. All of the other HDs are partitioned for multiple parititions, which I need to preserve. The OSX boot drive has 3 OSX partitions already installed. Any ideas on how to do this better? Yes, I know I can use Parallels or VMWare, and do, but find that native Boot Camp Windows is better.
    2. Windows Vista is running on a dedicated HD in Boot Camp on this machine (to all appearances running fine), but doesn't recognize more than 2Gb of RAM on my machine which is configured with 10Gb of RAM which is recognized appropriately in OSX. What am I missing?
I would appreciate any help on a partitioning scheme that works to support multiple partitions on these large drives, and a reason that only 2Gb out of 10Gb of RAM is recognized by Windows Vista Business in Boot Camp.
    Thanks!!!

    Thanks for your response.
I am running in Boot Camp, which runs in native mode without emulation. The advantage is that if you are going to run Windows, which is my goal, it doesn't have the overhead of OSX. Indeed, most Mac machines are among the fastest Windows machines available for equivalent hardware when running Windows in native mode. There are a few more arcane advantages to running natively, particularly in terms of connecting to external devices. There is no background RAM overhead when run natively.
    Thanks....

  • Where can high-power video cards be installed on a first-gen Mac Pro?

I have a first-gen Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900 XT in Slot-1 and a Geforce 7300 GT in Slot-4. The x1900 XT powers a 30" monitor and the 7300GT powers 2 x 20" monitors. The 7300GT card died and is being replaced with an 8800 GT.
Now it seems fairly obvious that for gaming the 8800 GT is superior to my X1900 XT. Ideally I'd like to just throw my new 8800 GT in Slot-1 and use it for my 30" monitor and then run the 2 20's off the X1900 XT in Slot-4. The problem with that is that the x1900 XT is a huge card and physically won't fit in Slot-4 because it runs in to the hard drives above it.
*Now, on to the questions / clarification:*
_Question 1_: Is the first-gen Mac Pro the same as the new Mac Pro in that high-power cards can only be used in Slot-1 and Slot-2? If so, why does it come in the standard configuration of:
    Slot-1: x16
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x1
    Slot-4: x8
It would seem that Apple purposely did this so you would run 2 high-power cards in Slot-1 and Slot-4 and keep them away from each other for heat reasons. The new Mac Pro has x16 bandwidth on Slot-1 and Slot-2 and it would make sense why they say to only install high-power cards in Slot-1 and Slot-2 for it.
_Question 2_: PCI-e configurations. There are a few ways I could tweak the configuration of the expansion slots to make this setup work. I'm curious as to which you would think is best:
*Option 1 (default PCI-e config, only works if a high-power card can be installed in slot 4):*
    Slot-1: x16 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x1
    Slot-4: x8 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
Now, the first issue is can the 8800 even run in Slot-4 due to the supposed power problem? If so, would there be a difference in performance for gaming at x8? I know this is backwards because you'd want the "primary" card to run on x16 but that's just not possible with this PCI-e configuration. If there is a difference in performance would an 8800 GT at x8 still run significantly faster in games than an X1900 XT a x16? I'd think so, but that's assuming the x8 isn't a real bottleneck.
*Option 2 (the only solution if the cards have to be installed in the first 2 slots):*
    Slot-1: x8 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
    Slot-2: x8 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-3: x4
    Slot-4: x4
You still have the issue of the 8800 only running at x8 (if it even makes a difference, not sure). The benefit I see here is that instead of the X1900 XT dumping all of it's heat in to the 8800 GT (since heat rises) you have the 8800 GT on the bottom where it might run cooler. The X1900 XT would then also be limited to x8 but it's not even being used for gaming so it wouldn't matter at all. The X1900 XT is huge and would cover up Slot-3 but I don't use the other 2 slots so I don't mind.
*Option 3 (only works if Slot-3 can actually power an X1900 XT):*
    Slot-1: x16 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x4 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-4: x4
This seems ideal only because this is the only setup that can get the 8800 to run at x16. The issue now is can Slot-3 run a high-power card? The card doesn't really NEED the power since it's just for running basic apps and not gaming. Again, the X1900 would cover up Slot-4 but it's not being used so no worries there.
*At the end of the day, the most important thing to figure out is:* where can high-power cards be installed in a first-gen mac pro? Once we know that we can figure out Question 2. The instructions that come with the 8800 GT say it can be installed in any of the 4 slots, but I don't know if I really believe that.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for your help, I think we've beat this horse to death :P. I'm glad I got it all figured out though.
Now the only question is if the gaming performance of the 8800 is actually enough better than the X1900 to warrant making it my "primary" video card. As long as Adobe CS3 apps don't rely on core image like some of the Apple Pro apps do I think it will be fine. If they do I'd have to probably just stick with the X1900 since I use CS3 every single day and only play video games once a week if I'm lucky.
What are your thoughts on the X1900 vs the 8800 GT for CS3?
Edit: This just occurred to me... Since I'm going to have to run them as x8, x8, x4, x4 there isn't really going to be a "primary" card since neither will be at 16x. I guess I could technically just plug my 30" monitor in to either one of them depending on what I feel like doing. If I'm going to play a game I just plug in to the 8800 and if I'm working I plug in to the 1900. The computer is up on the desk so moving the monitor from one card to the other takes about 10 seconds. I could just plug 1 20" monitor in to each so there's always a free DVI port on either one.
It's not the most elegant but I guess it would be a good compromise if I wanted the "best" performance in either situation. I realize the Radeon 3870 is probably the best of both worlds but I really don't want the noise. I already modified my 1900 with this after 6 months of listening to the lawn mower that was the stock 1900 cooler: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=147
    I'm just hoping the 8800 isn't too loud .

  • Installing Yosemite failed om 2012 Mac PRO

I have tried to install Yosemite on my Mac PRO (OS X 10.9.5) It looked good in the beginning but turned out to be a total disaster.
I couldn't start my computer again. I tried it again but it failed again! Now I put OSX 10.9.5 back on again and luckily it works. Only lost a couple of files.
Good lesson: make a back-up before installing Yosemite!!!!! Use the Time Machine and a separate hard disk.
What is wrong with Yosemite or the Mac PRO that it doesn't work??
    Please help.
Suggestion to alle Mac PRO users don't install Yosemite until this problem is solved by APPLE.

First, look at this article and see if your model can do an Internet Recovery: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If yours needs the firmware update, then do that  before moving on.
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
If for some reason your hard drive cannot be repartitioned or is not even visible in Disk Utility, then the drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

  • Can I install Mountain Lion in my Mac Pro

Can I install Mountain Lion in my Mac Pro?  This is my main computer and i only wnt to move forward if I know that it is 100% compatible with OS 10.8.  They tell you to look to see when it was built but there is no date that I can see. I'm pretty sure I got it in early 2008 ...  Here's the Hardware overview, without the serial number:

      Hardware UUID:          449CFA37-8EAE-5A08-9027-1236BC17C747
    Thanks much.

    Yes, you can.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

    Hi,
I have HP LaserJet 200 colorMFP M276nw and trying to install the driver on my mac pro; it gives me the error message that the driver is not available.

Typically this is caused by the internal list of compatible devices in the Mac being out of date.  All you should need to do is disconnect the printer from the Mac, run Apple Software Update (even if there are no updates, the list will still update), restart the Mac, connect the printer to the Mac, and add the print queue.  If that doesn't work, let me know.

  • Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) using external HD - speed USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA  - what are relative speeds - how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)_

        Hi All,
I'm trying to resume regular scheduled Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) of drives using external HD (to allow off-site redundant backup storage) .
What are relative speeds of USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA ?
I suspect eSATA connection may be considerably faster … how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)?
( The quicker and easier backup protocol is, the more likely one is to use it to backup on a routine repetitive basis.)
    Thanks

Adding a USB 3.0+eSATA PCIe card, which The hatter mentions, is the best solution that I've found. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3/. The card is not cheap, but the USB 3.0 works flawlessly (which can't be assumed; ask me how I know) and the eSATA connection allows booting from the connected drive. Grant Bennet-Alder's point about HD speed is important to consider; in addition, the size of the individual files being backed up and where on the backup disk they're going will affect overall transfer speed. For example, using the USB 3.0 connection on that CalDigit card going to a Toshiba 3TB external, the transfer rate for a big file (say a virtual machine file) from an internal SSD boot drive was about 145 MB/sec while a bunch of little files might drop to 30 MB/sec and both rates decrease as an inner partition on the external is used. All told, a nearly 700 GB backup took under 1.5 hours. Using a HD as the source added almost an extra hour, though a WD external was used for that. Using a WD green drive plugged into this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/FWU3ES2HDK/ with an eSATA connection took about 2.5 hours also, but that was bootable whereas the USB 3.0 connection is not.
Another point to consider is that USB 3.0 is ubiquitous on PC's now so there's lots of price competition for externals; not so much for eSATA externals.
