Problem installing win xp on MBA

Hi,
I need windows xp on my mac for diverse reasons.
I started bootcamp, partitioned for 20g, then with an external cd driver plugged in with usb, went on to install windows xp with my original sp1 cd.
Bootcamp reboots my macbook air and then the screen goes black and I get the error message: non bootable device -- insert a bootable disk and press any key to restart (...)
Whatever key I press nothing happens. I have to force shut down the mac.
In the past I have had windows 7 installed correctly and working, but I am not interested in using 20g of space for an OS.
Also, I know the mac can recognize the external cd driver and sp1 cd inside it because if I go in system preferences and in startup it shows up (as a win xp installation cd)
I know that Apple does not support windows installations and even less windows xp, but it must be possible to install windows xp on a mac?
Please help me. I have been working on this for more than a week now, searching forums and posting everywhere with no answer that fixes this problem.
Thank you in advance

How you get SP2 is your own issue. I can't advise you to do something that would be considered illegal.
I can't be sure why you had a problem. All I can tell you with certainty is that SP1 does not work with Boot Camp. You would know that had you read the documentation first. Here's more:
Boot Camp- Installing Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Boot Camp 3.0- Cannot Install Windows XP Service Pack 3

  • Problem installing Win XP Pro SP2 on 2008 Mac Pro running 10.6.8

Okay, I have never setup or ran a bootcamp partition so I apologize in advance for my ignorance on the subject. I have been attempting to install win xp pro (SP2). I am using the Boot Camp Assistant  v3.0.4. I have created a 32GB FAT32 partition and at the point I click Continue Installation (with the XP Pro disc in the drive) the computer reboots to supposedly install.
What happens instead is I get a revolving censorship/ban circle icon, folder with question mark and apple logo. It just continuously will flash between those 3 icons until I restart.
    Here's what I've tried...
-removing all other drives. I'm attempting to install on the boot drive which is in bay 1.
-removed all external devices only things plugged in are my usb keyboard and DVI monitor
    -deleting and recreating the partition
-I have the xp pro cd in the top drive and the snow leopard cd in the bottom drive (both internal cd/dvd drives)

      Boot ROM Version:          MP21.007F.B06
      SMC Version (system):          1.15f3
No matter what I try I am met with the same results. I have held down the option key and manually selected the windows xp cd. It seems to be booting but immediately turns off my DVI monitor which, well, makes it impossible for me to actually know what is happening. I do have a nvidia GeForce 8800 which only has two DVI ports off the back. I do have the adapter and an old VGA monitor I could pull out of the attic but would rather not unless that is my only option. Can someone in the community please point me in the right direction?
    Many, many, many thanks!
    Curtis
    OKC, OK

Update: my problem was solved by getting my VGA monitor out of the attic. Once windows was done and I ran the setup.exe off the Snow Leopard CD, all of the drivers were updated to allow me to switch back over to my apple cinema display.
Also, I did need to hold down the option key to select the windows CD to install...and again to select the windows partition to boot but so far everything is going well with Bootcamp 3.0.4 and XP SP2...other than it is windows.

  • Problems installing Win XP

Hi Can anyone help please? I have just built a new pc using MSI's KT6V LSR SATA Mboard and I'm having problems with installing Win XP. My PC is the following spec:
AOPEN case H500B-300W, KT6V LSR mb, AMD XP Athlon 2500 Barton core with 333 FSB, one stick of 512mb TwinMos DDR ram-2700, 1 Samsung Spinpoint 80GB SATA HD, Nvidia Geforce GTS geforce 2 card.
The problem is that I just can't get Windows XP Pro to install. I get to the stage where the setup files are being installed from the cd and the progress bar gets to a small percentage and then the installation just hangs. I am using standard performance BIOS settings, and the partitions on the HD are NTFS formatted. In the early stages of the installation I am pressing F6 to install the VIA SATA RAID disk drivers. Is there any problems to be aware of when installing XP on SATA drives or these MSI boards?
In addtion how does one flash the AMI BIOS with the latest update 1.3. The intructions are a bit unclear and I'm only used to flashing AWARD BIOS.
Many thanks in advance for anyones help.
    Steve

Thanks piioo and cdm, but I have fixed the problem. Its seems to be a memory timing issue in the bios thats causing instabillity.  I slowed things down a bit by turning down the FSB to lower than what it should be, 166, and XP installed.  There is an adjustment in the dram settings screen to either set the memory to fast, turbo or ultra, but not to normal or just off. I believe the latest bios update deals with ths issue.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 problem installing Win 7

I have tried downloading then installing PSE10 on 64bit Win 7, got an error stating cannot run missing files please reinstall. Tried that to no effect other than a repeat several times. So I bought the disc's and uninstalled, ran disc cleanup and tried to Clean Install it from disc, and end up getting the same results.  Any suggestions? I Lightroom 3 (3.6) installed fine and is running without problems.

Adobe's installation troubleshooting page has some suggestions:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/858/cpsid_85843.html
Note:  You do not need to defragment your hard drive.  Win7 takes care of that automagically.
If those suggestions don't help, here's another Adobe page describing how to use the installation log file to troubleshoot:

  • BIG PROBLEM - installing Win XP

    HI,
When I tried to install XP, files are loaded in off cd and then a message says "starting windows" comes up followed by the system hanging.
    Windows 98 are without problems.
I tried all. Also reformatted the hard drive, deleted partition, removed any unnecessary devices from mobo... Changed the BIOS setting. I have newest BIOS. But it still didn't work. Memory is OK.
It was OK with my older mobo MSI K7T Pro2-A (KT133).
    My configuration:
MSI 745 Ultra, Duron 700, 512 MB 333 MHz(hynix - i hope its right), GF 2 GTS, SB Live!, CDROM Toshiba 24x, CDRW TEAC 548E, WD 30 GB, modem Diamond 56k.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    Morfeus.

    Hey guys,
Actually, I'm having the same problem too.  I got WinXP to install twice though outta trying for about 6 hours and it's luck that it happened.  I really don't know what the problem is and I'm getting really sick of it because once I get WinXP to install, MSN Messager won't work along with the Windows Update feature.  So far, I have managed to focus the problem down on one thing:  It's the way the motherboard is handling the RAM.  How do I know?  Try switching the ram around in the slots.  The computer performs differently everytime you switch the slots that the RAM is put into.  That's what I experienced.  However, it doesn't solve the problem.  My system still hangs every now and then and it's random.  I ran Memtest86 for 8 hours straight during the night and all tests passed every single time.  Hell, I can't even get my DVD software to use Video Acceleration because it freezes whenever I turn the option on and the dvd runs for 5 secs.  I'm really thinking about returning this motherboard and going to buy the Abit version of it.  I've heard they don't have problems like this at all.  If anyone has any idea how to solve this system hanging problem, please post the answer, this fustrating.  My system specs are:
    325 WATT Power Supply
    MSI NForce2 K7N2-L
    AMD Athlon XP 2100+
    Corsair DDR 512 PC2700
    Geforce2 GTS 32MB DRR
    Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy Gamer
    Hitachi CD-ROM
    Plextor CD/DVD Combo Drive
80 gig Maxtor HDD Ultra ATA133 7200 RPM
The bios is on all default settings and so forth, so there shouldn't be any problems about overclocking.  I know all my parts are fine since they all worked with my old motherboard.  If anyone can help, that would greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

If you don't understand what happens to your installation, DON'T DO THAT AGAIN.
You should use '--force' only if you are sure nothing bad will result from that.
In this case, you are happy that pacman refuses to force the installation of the lib32 packages in place of the already installed x86_64 libraries.
The lib32 libraries should be installed in '/usr/lib32' not '/usr/lib'.
What is the result of 'ls -l /usr/lib32' ?
There is something not good here with your system...

  • Problem Installing EM Cloud control 12c in Win Server 2008

    Hi All,
I having problem installing the EM in win server 2008 64bits. I already installed java run time but when i click on the setup.exe in the disk 1 after unzip it does not show the installation wizard and any error message. Did i miss out something? do i need to create the user group and user as stated in the installation guide as stated in this link Installing Enterprise Manager System - 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.1)?

Hi, can you open an SR for this issue and share the number. Lets check few basic things:
    a) can you make sure that all the zips are downloaded from OTN have correct byte and checksum information
    b) Can you make sure that you unzipped all these zips files in a single folder ?
    c) After unzipping can you check if you have following folders created ( not these folder are for linux but they will be same on windows) -
install      libskgxn      plugins     response     stage     WT.zip
    jdk     oms     runInstaller      wls
    d) Can you invoke setup.exe -debug
then look at the logs from -
C:\Users\aime\AppData\LocalTemp\2\OraInstall2013-07-09_04-10-59AM   ( for windows it will be orInstaller.err and log )
You donot need any user group or any thing created.

  • Problems with installing Win 2000 on MS6380

    Hello,
I have a problem with installing Win 2000 SP 2 on a PC assembled with a MS 6380 (Kt 266 pro) mainboard.
The setup starts but the system blocks just after the boot, when showing the message "Detecting Hardware configuration" .
    The configuration is the following:
    Athlon TB 800
    MS 6380
    128 MB DDR
    Matrox G200
20 Gb Quantum Fireball CX HDD
    Intel Ethernet card 100 pro + S
I tried to update the Bios to the latest version (1.90) and set the most conservative settings on the RAM timings. I have disabled ACPI, too.
Could someone please help me with solving this problem?
    Thanks

You have format the BootCamp partition during the Windows installation, since OSX can only do a preformat using FAT32 (MS-DOS) and Windows 7 needs NTFS as file system.
See page 7 of the BootCamp Installation Guidehttp://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf

  • Problems Installing Software on a Mac that is both Win and Mac compatible

I am new to Mac. My kids have a bunch of games and some educational software on CD ROM. The software case's say the CDROM is compatible with both Windows and Mac. I have not had a problem installing them on my old PC but cant get either my iMac or Macbook to install the software.

Check the exact version requirements on the box. Make sure it says OS X. If it only supports OS 9, then it won't work on Intel Macs (e.g. your MacBook and 2006 iMacs).
Also, there are a few bizarrely-designed games that are OS X compatible, but the installer runs in OS 9. If that's the case, you'd need to install it on a PowerPC Mac, then copy the game folder onto your Intel Mac (using flash drive, CD, file sharing, etc)

  • Problems installing Oracle8i on Win XP

    Hi,
Anyone knows what to check for problems installing Oracle8i on WindowsXP?
I would appreciate getting a check list so that I or anyone reading the list can understand clearly run through all the steps required in sourcing the problem.
I am writing for a friend so I can't actually state what he is experiencing; only that the WinXP may have been an upgrade installation and not a clean installation. Could that cause problems. The Oracle8i installed and worked fine on the previous system.
I Would really appreciate hel asap. Thanks in advance.
    Linda

    Lida,
first of all verify the version of Oracle is certified with the version of the Operating System.
then do the following steps to install :
Start the Installer and Install the Oracle Software:
-Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive
-If autorun is configured, the installer will start automatically
-To manually start the installer, double-click on cd:\setup.exe
-From the welcome screen, select NEXT
-From the File Location screen, select NEXT
-Select "Enterprise Edition" for the Install Category.
-Select Typical to install the software, create a database and start
the database (Other selections are available for minimal or custom installs).
    -Follow on screen prompts
    -The install will begin.
-When completed, the install will have created a default database, configured a listener, and started both for you.
-When the installer completes, you should have a working database running along with the listener.
-Should the installer fail, note the error given. Check nstallActions.log in the C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs directory.
Oracle 8i does not have any installation problem with XP.
    hope this will help you.

  • Problems Installing Win7 using External, USB DVD Drive

I have a mid 2010 15" i7 MBP which I upgraded to from 4GB to 8GB RAM courtesy of OWC.  I recently upgraded the 500GB 7200RPM HD with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 and using an OWC Data Doubler, I replaced the DVD SuperDrive with the 500GB Hard Drive.
I used an External USB DVD Drive to install OS X SL On the SSD without issues. Also, I got all my updates and software installed and working without any problems.
I've been running great for about 2 weeks now, so I decided to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I ran Boot Camp Assistant and partitioned the 240GB SSD in half 120/120. Everything went fine with creating the partition. I selected to Install from the Win 7 DVD media in the USB DVD drive and rebooted.  I got a grey screen.  I turned the computer off and turned it back on.  Holding down Option, I selected the Install DVD from the Boot Menu.  I then got a screen with the Apple Logo flashing intermittently with a Circle/Cross Hatch.  So I can't get the Windows Install to start to save my life.  I know the External, USB DVD works since I used it to install OS X and I have no problems using it in OS X.  I Know the media works because I tried a test install, without activation in a VMWare Fusion VM.
    Any suggestions are appreciated?

So here is the answer.  The Firmware on the MacBook Pro only supports installation of OS X from External Media and will not install operating systems from 3rd Parties.  I tried to install Windows XP, Win7 Ultimate  32 & 64bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 but no success.
Supposedly, the MacBook Air does support installation of 3rd party operating systems from external media, but I have no way to confirm this.
I ended up reinstalling the internal DVD drive installing Win 7 and Ubuntu on the SSD.  Using rEFI, I'm able to triple boot all 3 operating systems.  Then removed the drive again and reinstalled the 2nd HD. Everything seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for someone who has experience in Mac EFI Hacking to see if there is a way to enable booting 3rd Party OSes from external media.  I'm guessing someone could examine the MBA firmware and figure out how to hack that capability into the MBP.
