Problem installing Win XP Pro SP2 on 2008 Mac Pro running 10.6.8
Okay, I have never setup or ran a bootcamp partition so I apologize in advance for my ignorance on the subject. I have been attempting to install win xp pro (SP2). I am using the Boot Camp Assistant v3.0.4. I have created a 32GB FAT32 partition and at the point I click Continue Installation (with the XP Pro disc in the drive) the computer reboots to supposedly install.
What happens instead is I get a revolving censorship/ban circle icon, folder with question mark and apple logo. It just continuously will flash between those 3 icons until I restart.
Here's what I've tried...
-removing all other drives. I'm attempting to install on the boot drive which is in bay 1.
-removed all external devices only things plugged in are my usb keyboard and DVI monitor
-deleting and recreating the partition
-I have the xp pro cd in the top drive and the snow leopard cd in the bottom drive (both internal cd/dvd drives)
Computer:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro2,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 3 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 8 MB
Memory: 10 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP21.007F.B06
SMC Version (system): 1.15f3
No matter what I try I am met with the same results. I have held down the option key and manually selected the windows xp cd. It seems to be booting but immediately turns off my DVI monitor which, well, makes it impossible for me to actually know what is happening. I do have a nvidia GeForce 8800 which only has two DVI ports off the back. I do have the adapter and an old VGA monitor I could pull out of the attic but would rather not unless that is my only option. Can someone in the community please point me in the right direction?
Many, many, many thanks!
Curtis
OKC, OK
Update: my problem was solved by getting my VGA monitor out of the attic. Once windows was done and I ran the setup.exe off the Snow Leopard CD, all of the drivers were updated to allow me to switch back over to my apple cinema display.
Also, I did need to hold down the option key to select the windows CD to install...and again to select the windows partition to boot but so far everything is going well with Bootcamp 3.0.4 and XP SP2...other than it is windows.

I keep getting fuzzy answers on this (firmware, future updates, etc.). I can make a 2 partition HD on my 2008 (3.1), with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on 1, and Lion on the other, and then put this HD in the 2012 3.06ghz. Will it work? (It does on the 2010 2.93ghz).
Tony https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4051765?tstart=0 Never got back and until someone who received a "new" Mac Pro 5,1 (5,2? just for laughs?) to know.
Apple ties OS build and fiirmware and Mac ID.
It should after all nothing really changed. In this case it has the same latest firmware that shipped iwth some 2010s
We had discussions about this when Mac Pro 2010 started shipping with Lion last... summer/fall.
A true Lion only system ships not only without DVDs, and with Lion, but can do a network install (it grabs a small boot loader) to pull down the installer and has enough code in the firmware. Same with AHT.
A. It (10.6.8) works and you are fine
B. It works only with Lion.
What is the real question? do you need to run 10.6.8?
There is a 1/20 chance too that it has a later build of 10.7.4, right?

Early 2008 Mac Pro won't boot after installing 2nd DVD drive
All,
I purchased a Pioneer DVR-117D from Mac Sales and after installing it in my new refurbished 2008 Mac Pro it won't boot. My MP will boot if I remove the drive. According to the Mac Sales website this drive should work fine in my MP. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I literally just got my MP today and installed the drive. Is it the drive or the Mac Pro. Thank you all.The drive was set to master, I switched it to CS before I left for work but haven't tried reinstalling it. I will try when I get back and let you know if it worked. Thank you again.

There I go first mistake straight off. I was wondering how to fit my big long problem in. My fault I am sure but if anyone can help please.
Early 2008 Mac Pro Desk Top, 2 hard drives 1)snow leopard, 2)lion.
I have downloaded Mountain Lion usuing disk 1,selected no.2 as my destination, installed ok everything fine, set my startup as no.2 in preferences, switch off. Next day start up - nothing, my only way to get moving was physcally remove disk 2, and let snow leopard restart.
Reinstalled, everything fine, then same problem on restart next day, remove disk, and so on.
The mountain Lion installer remains in the snow leopard dock.
I know the problem is me, so if anyone is kind enough to be able to offer a solution it needs to be in easy speak (press button a, press button b) because I am not that savvy.
my best regards to all, and thank you.Where did you get Mountain Lion? Did you download the 4+ GB file from the App Store? If so, then I would try doing the following:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your second drive on which Lion is installed (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Install Mountain Lion
Double-click on the Mountain Lion Installer application in your Applications folder. Follow instructions to install Mountain Lion on your old Lion drive - Drive 2. When the installer finally finishes it will restart the computer automatically from Drive 2. At this point there is no need to change the Startup Disk unless you want to boot from your Snow Leopard drive.
You will startup to the Setup Assistant in which you will configure your own admin account. You can, if you want, omit that part and instead choose to migrate your Home folder and other data from the Snow Leopard drive. I would recommend you do that unless you wish to do it manually at a later time. In this case create your new admin account using the exact same username and password that you now use on your Snow Leopard system. -
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro and want to install a 3TB internal hard drive. Is this compatible? The manual indicates 1 TB per bay, but I have already installed two 2 TB hard drives in two other bays, and have had no problems. Any suggestions?
RE: SATA Bus speed:
Typical Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.

Lion will not install on a January 2008 Mac Pro (3.1)
I have a January 2008 Mac Pro (version 3.1) and I'm trying to install Lion on one of the hard drives in the main chassis. It has consistently failed.
I have tried:
Reseating memory
Reseathing hard drives
Zap PRAM
Reset SMC
Downloaded 4 fresh copies of Lion from the App Store
Install from the installer file
Install from a DVD made with InstallESD.DMG
Yet, it fails consistently.
I have 5 log files I'm willing to share, but they almost always look like this one. Some of them fail on different pkg's, but in general, this one seems to be the most regular failure. It's like the filesystem just dies in the middle of the install.
Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

This is going to sound a little crazy, but I've spent a lot of time on this one.
There's some kind of incompatibility with Lion and Seagate ST31000340AS drives. I was trying to install Lion on these drives and it would consistently fail. I've also tried to use these drives in a RAID volume. No go. I tried three different drives of this model. All of them failed.
I tried to install Lion on a Seagate ST31000528AS and it worked first time and sings beautifully. -
Problem on my early 2008 Mac Pro
I had this problem with my early 2008 Mac Pro which started last week.
Some background; I'm using 8GB RAMs, using Snow Leopard and bootcamp Windows 7 and 3 days before the start of the problem, I had replaced the original 320GB HDD for 640GB HDD and reinstalled both OSes.
While I was playing some videos in Windows 7 last week, it displayed the blue screen with memory dump message and restarted on its own. Thereafter, I was unable to load Windows 7 and SL respectively, both hung before they can be loaded. In SL, I noticed that there were some faint red dots in the Apple logo and subsequently, the entire screen started to flicker with some random black and white strips. In Windows 7, it frozen at the Windows logo with a 640x480 resolution. My default resolution was 1920x1200. However, I managed to loaded into the safe mode of Windows and extracted my work.
I tried to re-install SL and it hung again at the Apple logo followed by the flickering.
I sent it to my local service centre and the technician removed my video card, RAMs and memory risers and cleaned the contact, ran the stress test overnight, AHT3A152 and ASD3S123 tests and concluded that he found no issues with the hardwares and the problem did not occur again.
The Mac Pro was sent back to me today and earlier, I started up with no problem and decided to remove the Windows partition and I restarted it again to confirm everything was ok. However, at the next startup, the problem re-surfaced and I could no longer start up my Mac Pro in SL.
I tried to swopped back the original 320GB HDD, but the problem still persists. Before I send back my Mac Pro to the service centre tomorrow, I would like to have some 2nd opinions. Based on my description, what is the likely cause of this problem, is the newly replaced 640GB be the root cause?Do you keep Windows on its own hard drive?
I would have kept the 320GB while using Windows WD Lifeguard to test, zero, run extended tests and slow long format of the new WD 640. Then just cloned system to new drive.
Casper 6.0 seems to be great utility if you want to avoid reinstalling 7, though I've found 7 to be fast and easy to install even with dozens of programs to add.
Are you using the current / latest graphic driver for 7? I don't notice you even list which card.
RAM - there is no perfect test, AHT finds some while Memtest takes time and may find others.
Windows may be more sensitive to weak hard drive sectors and memory than Mac OS or than HFS+.
Do you have any 3rd party devices? PCIe? Cables etc?
And you can't boot off Windows 7 DVD or Safe Mode?
Windows should automatically offer to boot in Safe Mode.
Also, try restore from last good restore point. -
Early 2008 Mac Pro - Can't load Boot Camp drivers for Win 7 64
Trying to install Win 7 64 bit on my early 2008 Mac Pro. I downloaded the Boot Camp drivers 4.0.4033 and installed them on a USB drive but, for some reason, when I try the install them during the process, I get a message that my hardware is not recognized. Skipping the driver loading process, I am able to install Win 7 but when the system trys to restart to continue the install, I get a message "disk error, press any key to restart". Pressing any key does not get me anywhere. I went through the Win 7 repair process and again tried to load the drivers with no luck.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you,That article was also my starting point and I have followed those steps again and again and again. I haven't slept, I haven't done anything other then try to make it work for more hours than I can count. I came here for help because that solution is not working for me.
The region and keyboard type settings simply don't have the Apple keyboard layout listed. As I said, someone on the Fusion forum tried to follow the article's instructions too and he managed to get it working because he COULD run setup.exe (Boot Camp Drivers) on his machine, and I CAN'T. Yes, it is all explained in that article... but the drivers WON'T INSTALL, I get an error message saying "This version of Boot Camp is not intended for this computer model".
First you said it wasn't physically possible for me to install the drivers, then you said I should just follow the article. Well, the article clearly says "Install the Boot Camp Windows device drivers in the virtual machine" which you just said couldn't be done! I want to cry. I should have just bought a second laptop, this is too painful. -
Early 2008 mac pro won't boot from hdd when ssd is installed
I have Mountain Lion 10.8.3 installed on my 1TB HDD in my early 2008 mac pro. That is the only OS install on my mac. I have an OWC SSD formatted but left as an empty drive that I am trying to use but when it's installed my mac hangs on the blank gray screen.
My mac cold boots fine and runs fine when the SSD is *not* installed. When I shut down and put the SSD into a drive bay the mac does seem to boot ok the first time, but when the computer is off for a while it will not boot. It just hangs on the blank gray screen (no apple logo). As soon as I pull out the SSD, the computer boots fine and runs fine again. I am not trying to boot off the SSD, I am booting off the HDD. The correct drive (1tb hdd) is selected in startup disk.
OWC has been helping me and I have tested 3 SSD's. So it does not appear to be a problem with their drive.
The mac will boot into safe mode with the SSD installed. It will boot if I choose the boot drive with the option key at startup.
Mountain Lion was clean installed.
Could it be some sort of library pref or cache issue?
Any recommendations on what to try?A HT does not find a lot of errors.
It doesn't look for bad sectors or directory or file problems.
Clone your SSD now that you have a clean OS and has the Apple updates on it. Before you make changes.
Install TRIM Enabler 2.2+ on it and any boot volume, to enable TRIM and so that Disk Utility's Repair Disk will trim cells. Mountain Lion Recovery won't which is a shame, so...
Clone and keep bootable backup clone of your system to use for maintenance.
A really bad directory on a system drive will cause interference from booting.
SSDs really need extra care, and even with TRIM, to be repaired from time to time and couple times a year, to do an erase and restore from a current image.
Of course Mac OS system even iwth apps is small and doesn't need to have any data or media and fits on 120GB usually just fine and still have a good enough amount free so TRIM and Garbage Collection can work properly and not get low on free pages. But 20GB free should be the minimum free, and better to have more, at least whatever total amount is written out in a month. -
Power problems with Radeon 3870 on 2008 Mac Pro
I've got a 2008 Mac Pro (10.5.7) and I've replaced the 2600 card that came in it with two Radeon HD 3870s and I am having an issue.
The cards are in slots 1&2 (the higher speed slots.) After a short period of time, the card in slot 1 powers off its monitors, but the monitors on the second card remain active. Only a reboot reactivates the monitors on the first card.
In the process of debugging this I've removed all cards and put 1 3870 in slot 1. The problem remained.
I swapped in the other card in slot 1. The problem remained.
I then tried each card in slot 2. The problem remained.
I've reinstalled the 10.5.7 updater, but this didn't help either.
Here's what the card looks like in system profiler:

Any advice would be appreciatedNow enough free space on the disk can slow the entire system down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info then select Storage from the menu.
Make sure there's at least 15% available space. -
I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server.
I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server. Is this possiIble? How is it done?
The mac has 10.5 which has bootcamp to enable Windows install. I have created a partition but the bootcamp utility asks for a CD. I want to install a RIS build. The Mac has a option for network boot but this seems to only work with Mac Server. I assume the network adapter is not PXE compatible and so a boot disk of some kind will be needed to kick this off?.Hallo, I installed the program as you said. Everything ok.

Why are there so many problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro ???
Hi everybody out there using Mac Pro's early 2008,
I found out there is a lot of problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro.
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been repaired ones under warranty and now it stopped working again ! Also see under: Mac Pro early 2008 no chime and does not start up. Why is this ????
It worked well for about 2 years and then it just fails and i had this failing issue twice already !!! Is this just a BAD Apple product or how do you think I need to approach this. Let’s face it, these machine don’t come cheap and you at least expect them to work without problems for 4-5 years. What is happening here ???
Cheers, Kavangogo to a black screen after 15 minutes or a couple hours
That is probably an indication that you need to find a new graphics card.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards" -
Hi, I have an early 2008 Mac Pro which has re-booting problems.
Processor speed is: 2.8
Memory: 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
2 x 28GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
I am running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10
My Mac Pro keeps re-booting. Last year I had to replace my graphics card. My original card was the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 255MB, and that is what I have now. At this precise moment my Mac Pro is running perfectly, except that it is slow and the spinning beach-ball keeps appearing. I have managed to do some work with the disk utilities, verifying, cleaning and partitioning. Some errors were found and when it was cleaned this seemed to help my Mac Pro to function properly. Although I am able to use my Mac Pro now, from day to day I still experience re-boot problems. Also quite unexpectedly my mac dictionary has an error, it closed itself down and will not open at all, I had the message to say that a report will be sent to Apple.
I have tried starting my computer with an external hard drive fitted via a USB cable, I use for back-ups. This worked and I was able to wipe my hard drive clear and replace all info from the back up I had done only a few days ago.
This worked for a few days and then the same problem started again.
I am beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new hard drive.
If there is anyone who has some answers to help me solve my problem, I would be most grateful.
RobertWhen you have the beachball activity, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

With an early 2008 Mac Pro I'm about to add a second internal drive (1 TByte SATA) and initially install OSX Lion onto the new drive. Then to partition this new HDD via Boot camp. But my question is whether I am best advised to purchase the 64 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium) or the 32 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium) for the Windows sector of the disk What are the differences, and will I notice a difference in performance?
In chart from wiki, (scroll down to "Comparison chart") check the maximum CPUs supported.
You don't see this on MSoft's 1st searched for chart hit. This is one reason you will regret not paying for Professional+ if you get Home Premium 64 as I did for Mac Pro early 2008.
Home Prem Task Mgr sees 4 processors vs. the 8 that are seen by Pro+.
Costs more than a Mac upgrade to Lion if you make that mistake.
