Problem locating iTunes music

Ok, so this is my problem: all of my music, videos, games, etc. are showing up on my iTunes. But whenever I try to listen to a song, or watch a video, a message saying "The song *insert song title here* could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" This has happened with every single item in my iTunes library. With some songs I can locate the original in my files and restore it, but with others I can't. And it is SUCH a time consuming process. Is there ANY way I can restore the items in my library easily?

I noticed your first post has this info
+My iTunes library is on a portable hard drive hooked up to my computer.+
I suspect what happened to you is either
#1 the exHD was not hooked up or powered on when you started itunes.
#2 You plugged in some other USB device and the exHD letter got changed in Windows. Mayeb it was F: one day and now it is G:
Either of those 2 situations makes it so itunes cannot find the music files.
For #1, quit itunes, plug the exHD in and make sure you can see it in Win Explorer, and restart itunes. itunes should be able to find your songs if you haven't changed anything else in the meantime.
For #2, assign the drive letter in windows back to what it was before, when itunes was working.
Use these directions
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844
Next times you open itunes everything should be back to normal.
Good luck!

• Problem with iTunes Music Playback

Hi, I like using itunes but im having a problem with the music playback. If i have just itunes running and some background programs i.e. anti-virus playback of music is fine but I want to be able to surf the web, and play my games while listening to music. However when i try to so this the sound becomes muffled, choppy and can skip and slow down all in all its impossible to listen to. I thought this may be a problem with my PC but its not a slow one. I tried Windows Media Player and while browsing the net, playing my games etc playback was perfect. Also ive done everything on this page> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610 but still had no luck. Now i will use media play if i have to much i much prefer itunes ans it has all my libary sorted out. Any help would be brilliant.
Thanks

Even though you LOVE iTunes, there are many other programs out there that don't require extra software to be installed for it to function....there by freeing up your CPU to run more programs.
I would seriously look into trying something different that doesn't need to hog so much system resources....until they reduce their program's needs.
Try something like Winamp or Musicmatch Jukebox.
You can have your library to show up pretty much the same way that they do in iTunes. You'll just have to read through the user guides to get it exactly the way you want it.

• Problem using itunes music in iphoto slide show

When creating a slide show with iPhoto, I cannot use my iTunes music anymore. I can see the list in the music window settings but there is no way to get access to it, either by directly double clicking on the title or by creating a dedicated playlist to the slide show.
Thisproblem seems to have happen after one of the updates of either OSX, iphoto or itunes as I have been using that feature previously and it did work well.
Anybody facing the same problem?
Thanks

• Problems with iTunes Music Folder on a Network Drive

Hi All,
I've several network drives, and one of them holds all my music (my itunes folder) - however every time I take my laptop away from my home network, and then, return itunes automatically re-sets the default itunes folder to the internal drive - any idea how I might stop this?
Thanks

Are you using Vista/XP or Mac OS?
Couple things:
1. In preferences, what is your location of iTunes library set to?
Is it X:\Itunes Music or something like that where X: drive is the network drive?
2. Do you have a local "Music Folder" (place where your iTunes library would normally be stored?
I have some suggestions but need more info. about your setup first.

• Registration problems using itunes Music Card

Hi - anyone out there having a problem registering with a music card? Seems music store has acknowledged redemption of card but will not allow registration because payment field demands credit card details which, naturally,I don't want to give!
Also support says there is a "None" button in payment field to indicate no credit card because you want to use a music card but when I register there is no such button!
Could my problem have been caused because I redeemed the music card BEFORE registering for an account?
Have sent an inquiry e-mail to iTunes but thought someone out there might be able to help out a bit quicker! Thanks

You redeem a card one time only.  The entire amount is then transferred to the account that redeemed it.  The card is of no use after this.  The credit has beenr edeemed.  it does not stay on the card at all.

• Can't locate itunes music in windows 8

have a new Windows 8 PC and have added the old external folder of music several times.  each time we try to play music it says it cannot locate the file.

iTunes keeps a record if where it thinks the files are located. If you change a file or folder or drive name, the links are no longer valid.  If you did this, change it back.
I have also heard that sometimes when you find one file, newer  iTunes will try to find files based upon the same criteria, so at least try to find one file.

• Persistant problem with iTunes music store

For a while now I have been unable to purchase songs from itunes. When clicking on "Music store" the front page of the store loads, but then within 5 seconds "Accessing music store" starts scrolling across the top of the screen, and this never changes. Clicking on any song titles or doing a search for music does not seem to do anything. Additionally my computer has become deauthorised. When I try and authorise my music again it has the same issues connecting and thus, I cannot listen to any of my already purchased music. I have tried accessing the service with all firewalls disabled but to no avail, and I am at a total loss on what to do.
Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the reply. I no longer have any download or web accelerators on my computer, and in response to your message I searched my computer for any remnants of these, only finding a few old files. I have now deleted these, but still the problem is present

• Problems synching itunes music...

I was trying to synch my ipod this morning, but now I keep getting a message saying:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "name of my ipod" failed. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".
I have 4777 songs on my itunes, but once the error message comes up, it stops synching. I can't get any more than 4703 songs to synch over now.
I'm not sure why this message is coming up, or what to do about it. Anyone know?
Thanks

I can't get any more than 4703 songs to synch over now.
Does it always seem to be giving you that error message when the same song or other item is being synced?

• Problems with iTunes on multiple drives

I have about half of my music on my c: drive and the other half on my d: drive. iTunes runs from the c: drive and has no problem locating that music, however it never can find the music on the d: drive. I would just move all the music over, however I do not have the room for it on my c: drive. I have a 4gb jump drive that also has music on it. Is there anyway to get iTunes to read all three locations for music without having to have the music files on one drive? Thanks for the help in advance.

When you say "read all three locations for music be more specific". The jump drive is the hardest one to do because it is not conistently mounted with the same drive letter. Unforantly ITUNES has not added the future to monitor changes in a folder and auto update so each time you add music to folder you have to add that folder to itunes. But once the music is loaded as long as you do not unplug the drive or move the music ITUNES will always remember its location.

• Syncing problem with itunes after restoring to a new PC from iPod

My old PC crashed and I copied my iTunes libray to a new PC from my iPod. The libray includes several songs taken from CD's I purchased plus several songs that I had purchased from iTunes. I also "authorized" the new PC. However, when I sync now none of the purchased songs from my new iTunes file will copy back to the iPod. It will only sync the songs from my personal CD collection. I get a message that the iPod is not authorized for these songs. Any suggestions for a fix?

Try deauthorising your PC and authorise it over again, this can sometimes clear a "not authorised" problem: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

• HELP please!! 3 problems w/ iTunes

I currently have iTunes10.2.2.12 installed on a dinosaur of a Dell (getting an 2011 iMac).
Anyways,
Problem #1 75-80%  of the time the Cover Flow of album art either is a solid black window saying
iTunes is unable to browse album covers on this computer
or the window is missing and you just see the window or desktop underneath in that cover flow area. Also, the same happens in Safari for Windows 5.05 (7533.21.1) with the bookmark pages cover flow
Problem #2:
This is more serious since it affects functionality and not ascetics. That being that my video podcasts 9/10 times do not show I only get audio. I subscribe  to the Apple Keynote Podcasts and want to show a relative a part of the iPad2 Keynote with the video of the iPad uses including the autistic child and how it is being used in the medical field, etc.
Can anyone please help me to resolve these problems especially the video podcast problem? I do not get any type of error message with the podcast it just plays audio.
Problem #3:
I'm having problem with iTunes Music Files playing correctly. For some time I have been noticing that for several songs when I play start playing a particular song in the middle of the song it jumps to playing in the middle of another song. The title of the song remains the original one I started initially. Sometimes they jump back and forth from song to song. Also some of the songs jump between 3 songs.
Now this is not random. It is always the same initial songs. I thought maybe it was my computer being old. However, when I play one of the initial songs that do this on my iPhone it does the same thing and jumping back and forth from the same songs.
It looks like something happened when the song was encoded on iTunes. The songs that do this are ones I burned off CDs.
I also thought maybe a scratched CD caused this but it happened tonight with a song from a new CD I recently burned.
Also note this happens with several songs from several CDs but each instance the songs involved in the jumping back and forth are from the same CD.
I'm going to be getting a 27"iMac soon so maybe even though I hate to perhaps on the new machine I should manually burn my CDs and just transfer my albums and songs downloaded from iTunes.
How can I make sure this doesn't happen on the iMac?

That being that my video podcasts 9/10 times do not show I only get audio.
Could you post a screenshot of what you're seeing there, Robby? (You can use the wee camera icon at the top of a reply to insert an image file into a post.)

• Itunes can no longer locate any music on my External Hard Drive

Last night I went into Itunes to add some music and it could no longer loacte any of my music. I went to edit - Preferences - advanced to check where is trying to check where the "Itunes Music Folder Location" was, and it had moved. When I tried to redirect it back to the eHD, it still cound not see any of the music. I have had this issue before and lost all my playlists etc...
Today I discoved that somehow the eHD drive name was changed for L: to N: which was why nothing worked. ( all the playlist tags were looking for the L: drive, which no longer existed.)
I have since corrected this issue, and the eHD is now correctly labeled as the L: drive.
The problem is all the playlists still do not work.
Please help, I have 3000 songs in here and it will take forever to go back and fix all of the playlists.

i dont know much about computers but I think this happened to me before.
as I said i hardly know computers. i think I unplugged the hard drive all cables and i turned the computer off too. plug it all again and see if it grabs it again. i did it and it worked. some how the extHD gets stuck on on. so thats why I unplugged it all. I dont know if you want to try that.

• ITunes music in folder but iTunes can't locate it after transfer to exHD.

I recently purchased an external hard drive to transfer all my music to since my internal hard drive is full. I followed all the directions to change the iTunes folder to the external drive but it only copied 338 of 619 folders(artist). I tried it again and it copied 558 folders. I finally changed it back to the original folder but now most of the music, videos, etc. are not found by iTunes. However, the info in the current iTunes window shows I have all the albums, artist and songs. All the album art is there too. I've tried selecting a few songs and bringing them over manually and iTunes plays like normal. I really need to get the music off the internal hard drive to free up space but I first need to have iTunes find all the music that is in the iTunes Music folder. I have also tried removing the iTunes library file and replacing it with the previous one before the 8.0 but that didn't help so I put it back the way it was. Is there a simple way to tell iTunes to search the folder and replace the missing songs/movies/etc. inside of locating them one by one?

Well I finally got it to work. Part of my problem was with my Time Capsule. When I finally got it working and could access the iTunes folder on it and I just restored the old iTunes Library file and erased the current one. It couldn't find about 10 artist but I just did the "add to library" command and got them all back. I also create the new file location in the window pane through iTunes instead of creating a folder on the external drive then just picking that folder. I think iTunes prefers you create the new folder within the software. Lastly, I copied the new iTunes Library file and dragged it into the "Previous Library" folder as a backup.
