Problem marking spam/junk in subject line tag

I've set up a mail server on 10.5.2 and it all seems to work fine but I'm having trouble with the junk mail filters.
I'd like to have junk mail delivered to the user with header lines indicating the SpamAssasin scores and the subject line tagged. The Server Admin tool indicates that this should be easy; just select "Junk mail messages should be: Delivered" and tick the "Attach subject tag:" box. The problem is that when I do this the mail does NOT get delivered; it gets parked in /var/virusmails and left there. The mails archived there do have the SpamAssassin header lines added, but I would like to have those mails Delivered, as I had selected in the ServerAdmin window.
I've not set up any unusual configurations; the only thing I've set up by hand is to enable Sieve on the Cyrus IMAP server, which is down-stream of the postfix mail delivery so it shouldn't make any difference. The system was a clean install of 10.5 ungraded to 10.5.2 before I set the mail system up. Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Receiving it tells the spammers nothing except, if they are monitoring their error messages (if sending from a hacked robot machine, they may not be), that it is a valid email address.
While it sits, unread, in your junk box, it can do you no harm.

  • SPAM shows in subject line of mail

On mail I recieve from one person it always reads ****SPAM**** in the subject line.  It does not show up as junk mail.  The person is a contact in my address book, so does anyone know how I can get the system to recognise that it's not SPAM?
    Thanks for any assistance

It may actually be your mail server that is adding *JUNK* to your subject line and not Mail. For example, my school's server adds *SPAM* to mail it thinks is spam, and it gets delivered to my inbox like that. It's then up to me to decide what to do with it. If this is the case with you too, I'm not sure if there's anything simple you can do about it on your end. If the messages being marked with *JUNK* are actually junk, I suppose you could just add a rule that sends those messages to your junk folder; if they're not junk, it may be something you have to just deal with.
Of course this may not be what you are experiencing at all

  • When I send an email to someone it always says SPAM in the subject line. I know this because I "c.c." the message to myself and it says SPAM. How to stop this?

When I send a email to someone it always says SPAM in their subject line. I know this because I "cc" or b.c.c myself on important messages and when the "cc" or "bcc" comes back, it will say [SPAM] in front of whatever else I had written in the subject line to the intended recipient. How can I stop the word SPAM from showing up in the subject line of my own outgoing messages? I don't want the recipient delete my message thinking it is spam. Help!

Could you check whether [SPAM] appears on the subject line if you view your messages directly on the server (for example, using a webmail page in your web browser)? This will help distinguish an accusation coming from a web server vs. any spam filter you may have installed on your computer that examines the mail while Thunderbird retrieves it.

  • Problem reading japanese mail subject line

    I am using
javax.mail.Message.getSubject() method to read the Japanese subject line of the mail, but when i see the string returned by this method, it has some junk characters.
Can anyone please tell me how to read japanese subject line?

    Hi Pothana,
I did try to change the encoding of the Exchange server to UTF-8, but there was no difference in the result.
Note that this problem is only in the subject line.  If I send the same text in the content it is received correctly.
(Changing the encoding of PI is not an option... I do not have access to the Visual Administrator).
@Ninad since I am taking the Subject from the ASMA (as suggested by SAP) I don't think that changing the content encoding of the message would make a difference.
@Ashutosh I do have that document but I can't find anything that can help me in there.  Do you see anything that could help resolve this specific issu?
In the mean time the problem is still there...
Thanks for any additional help you can give me,
    Aldo

  • Mail: Outgoing emails have 'Possible Spam' in subject line.

When I send emails using Mail they are received with 'Possible Spam' added to the subject line. Of course they are not received at all by some providers like Yahoo, gmail and hotmail, also some others. I think it is a Mail problem because it does not happen when I use my provider's webmail rather than Mail. Help?

Who is your email provider? If your email is received by some people with the words "Possible Spam" in the Subject line, that's done by their email provider; it has nothing to do with Mail or Mac OS X. And if your email is being blocked by Yahoo! Mail, Gmail and Hotmail, that's something they are controlling. For some reason they may have blacklisted the domain of your provider for being a known sender of spam in the past.
The only way to cure that problem is to have your email provider contact the other email providers and try to get them to take you off their list of blocked or questionable domains.

  • Why is "[SPAM]" being added to the subject line on all my sent emails? see below

[SPAM] Fwd: Help your friends recognize you

Thunderbird does not use the word spam or modify subject lines. Look at your antivirus, and spam software or your providers spam filters.

  • Removing Text From Incoming Subject Line

My ISP automatically adds "*SPAM*" to the subject line of e-mails it suspects of being spam. It's a great feature, but as can be expected, sometimes it marks a message that isn't spam. Is there a way to automatically remove the tag from e-mails that meet certain criteria, i.e.: the sender is a previous recipient?

Mail doesn't allow any editing of received messages. Mail Tags may be able to help, but I don't think so.

  • Creating truly custom mail rule - Subject line word length?

hey, first post... i am noting tons of spam where the subject line is one long mess consisting of junk words. There is no custom rule category allowing me to set something similar to:
if SubjectLine has word with length >20 Junk It..
Until Apple catches up to spammers and gives that to us, can anyone help me perhaps do this sort of thing? thanks, drew..

i solved this myself and can be contacted privately for the answer..

  • Has anyone solved the "all mail marked as junk" problem?

Mail marks almost all incoming mail and all sent mail as junk. I've found some inconclusive posts on this but no solution. Can anyone explain (or, better) fix this problem?

    Hi
have you read this thread? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=292113&tstart=100
esp about disabling junk filter & quitting mail.
You're using junk filter in automatic mode?
anyhow - blank field spam does seem to figure in breaking mail's junk filtering. Are you able to create a rule using the applescript linked to in my previous post?. If so - create one & put it at the top of the rule list to weed out any blank subject mail.
    Still a problem?
quit & restart mail - make sure junk filtering is enabled
    delete/empty the junk folder.
Find the mail in your inbox that's marked as junk & move it to the junk folder ( select them all & drag , or messages-move from the menu )
In the junk box, pick one of the moved messages & click 'not junk' - does it get moved back to the inbox? is it still marked as junk (assuming it did move back...)
If clicking 'not junk' isn't behaving - select all the messages & move/drag them back to the inbox. Are they still marked as junk? (hopefully not)
Repeat above with the 'sent' mailbox.
Disable junk filtering in mail prefs
quit mail & open it again
    re-enable junk filtering
    Any better?.....
If you're still having problems - make a note of all your rules ( you 'might' have to re-enter them)
    Quit mail
find the folder ~/library/Mail & drag a copy of the folder to the desktop (mouse + Alt) . Locate the file com.apple.mail.plist in ~/library/preferences/ & drag a copy of that to the desktop too.
These copies enable you to restore your mail to exactly as it is now - in case anything went wrong in the next stage. NOT that I expect it to, having tried all these things on my own mail installation......
Make sure mail is not running.
go into the original ~/library/Mail/ folder & trash these two files - LSMMap2 and MessageRules.plist
start Mail , go to prefs & make sure that junk filter is enabled for your account(s)
Send a message & see if it's marked as junk.
If you had a lot of rules & don't want to re-enter them manually - you can try quitting mail, replacing the MessageRules.plist file in the real Mail folder with the one from the copy made earlier & re-starting Mail.
If sent/junk is fixed - remember it may break again with a blank field email.
Sorry to write so much - but remember, I don't have the problem- so I can't test to see exactly what might fix it & just tell you the good bits.

  • Spam rule for long word in subject line..

My apologies, but my last question on this topic is archived (that seems quick).. but
Surely there must be a way to create a spam rule that checks for words in the subject line that are, say more than X characters long. The new spam that is driving my batty with very long single words in the subject line are just not filterable as the content, the site, the eddress etc are rotating so quickly.
If not, APPLE, can you add this pleeeeeease? thanks, drew..

You mean like "Offfice2010IissBetterThannEver.GeetItFfromAuthroizeddOEMOnlineStore"? (I suspect a lot of us get those!) While I agree with you in principle, I don't think Apple should hard-bake an option for "subject length" into the rule panel, since it's really something that you want Mail's own junk filter to pick up.
Even better is if your mail provider can mark it as junk before it gets into Mail. Gmail has pretty strong junk filters. Some providers (especially if you own the domain) allow you to adjust the junk level to catch more spam. You can often set a spam prefix at the server, so that when Mail gets the message, the subject looks something like "* SPAM * [original subject]" - you can then set a rule that finds these and files them appropriately.

  • How do I stop the [?? Probable Spam] subject line change?

I am running Apple mail and linking to a MobileMe account via IMAP. I have no other accounts that I access via Apple mail. Some of my mail subject lines begin with [?? Probable Spam]. I don't have any anti-virus software and I have no idea where this label is coming from. I did accidentally install Kaspersky anti-virus for Mac a while ago, but I deleted the App as soon as I discovered my mistake. Could it still be lurking around somehow?
I have junk mail filtering turned on in Mail preferences, but that highlights possible junk mail and lets me tell mail that a message is not junk. I'm fine with that.
I'd like to stop or at least figure out how to get rid of the [?? Probable Spam} subject line when I reply to a message. Frankly, it's embarrassing. Help!

It's possible. Most mail providers run anti-spam software on their servers to minimize to whatever extent possible the crap that we get. You should ask them. I have no idea why you see what you see unless you still have residual elements of the anti-virus software you installed. See:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Mail is putting the word SPAM at the beginning of subject line of messages

Mail is putting the word SPAM at the beginning of subject line of a large percentage of messages in my in box that are not junk. My Mail Junk Preferences don't seem to affect this. Any ideas?

    Dale Borglum wrote:

I don't think Mail can actually do that. It might be something being done by the spam filter running on the mail server at your ISP.
If you have access to your mail through webmail or a different mail program, try leaving Apple Mail closed for a while and only reading mail in one of the other ways. If the SPAM word keeps getting tacked on even when Apple Mail is not running, Apple Mail is not the one doing it.

  • Junk mail filter in yosemite doesn't work. i can't find the 'mark as junk' selection or 'remove from previous recipients' which would help to filter out spam.

junk mail filter in yosemite doesn't work. from the flags, i can't find the 'mark as junk' selection. Formerly clicking on the email address in question would allow one to 'remove from previous recipients' which would help to filter out spam. I've adjusted all the settings under mail preferences, but that is not helping.

    Hello Diane162,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to be able to filter some of the junk mail that you are receiving in Mail. The attached article has a lot of great information on junk mail filtering, including how to mark as junk and adjust the junk filter.
