Problem moving mail from one computer to another...

Hello.
I'm trying to move a specific mailbox from one computer to another computer. I'm doing this to 2 pairs of machines and with the first pair I had no issues. But, then second pair I get errors.
On the first computer I just copied the .mbox folder (which contains the sub "Messages" folder & info.plist file) from the one computer to the other. Then, in mail.app I "import" the messages via the Import option (importing mail from Mac OS X). No problem and all messages are imported.
On the second pair of computers, I did the same thing, but when I try and Import the messages onto the second machine, it says it can't find any OS X mail messages to import.
I really need to get these messages from one machine to another. "Forwarding" or "Redirecting" all the messages from one machine to another isn't an option.
Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, or another way of migrating the single folder of messages (not the entire account) from one machine to another?
Thanks,
Kristin.

Hi Kristin,
I stay away from mbox files because it has never worked for me, but I may have a solution. This may not be THE award winning answer, but you could consider it when the other options don't work:
I assume you want to import a mailbox that is NOT part of an IMAP account, because otherwise you would not have this problem (right?) (otherwise just open that IMAP account on the computer you want the messages on).
But if you have an IMAP account, besides the POP account that contains the mailbox in question, you can use that account to fix your problem:
Go to the compu that has the desired mailbox, make a new folder in the IMAP account called 'backup' or whatever. Copy all messages from the desired mailbox to that new IMAP folder (depending on size this may take a while, because you are uploading via your internet connection). Now go to the other compu, make a new 'local folder' in mail.app. Open the IMAP account in mail.app and open the 'back up folder'. Now copy all messages to the new, local folder.
If you don't have an IMAP account, you can always open a free one with gmail.
I know, it's not very elegant, but this will work guaranteed.
Good luck,
Feddeg

  • Moving music from one computer to another using an iPod?

Thing is I want to buy a new laptop soon, and I'd like to move my music from my old computer to the new one, but I'd like to use my iPod 160GB as a hard disk to transport it, I've copied my music and video files along with other important data into folders I've created inside the iPod, it covers about a 3rd of the total space in the iPod. Question is, can I transport the music to the new computer without the system resetting the iPod to work with the new computer itself?
Last time(like 3 weeks ago) I had to reset my computer(the old one) because of viruses trouble and such, but I had previously saved my data inside the iPod, so I just copied the files to the same locations as they were in the previous configuration including the iTunes folders library files to a folder I created, then installed iTunes and then the iTunes library files to its own folder; it worked wonders because no files or playlists were lost, and when I plugged my iPod, I had no problems, but I reckoned no problems happened there because this iPod had been used with this computer already, so I wonder if this would be effective with a new computer.
So question remains, could I transport the files(all data) from the iPod to the new computer without it resetting itself and hence losing any of the data?

How to Copy and Move (Clone) your iTunes Library from One Computer to Another – or Archive Prior to a PC Re-Image or Reformat
This well-written iLounge Article is a must-read for anyone considering moving their Library to a new computer or a new location. Or, just wants a better understanding of how iTunes manages your music.
Below is the conceptual framework with related and important links. Apply and adapt it to your specific situation and equipment resources.
The safest, quickest, and most optimal method to move your Library to a new computer is to actually clone the entire ‘iTunes’ folder (directory) structure, rather than just copying just the song files. By copying the entire ‘iTunes’ folder and all sub-folders, you capture not only the music files, but the all-important ‘iTunes Library.itl’ database file (usually located in the ‘iTunes’ folder), which contains all the data about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
Install iTunes on the new computer. Then go back to your old computer and move (copy) the "iTunes" folder which usually resides inside your "…\My Documents\My Music" folder from the old computer to the exact same place (both Drive Letter and complete Path) on the new computer. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will look and behave exactly the same way it did on the old, Play Counts, Ratings, Comments and all!
Preserving and transferring the original Library Database file (iTunes Library.itl) is most critical with iPhones as they can sync with only one iTunes Library at a time. This is managed by the ‘Library Persistent ID’ hardcoded within each iTunes database file. If your ITL file has a different ID, your iTunes/iPhone attachment will be seen as a new Library and you will need to completely re-sync your iPhone. This may or may not be an issue for you. See how to manage the LPID via This Link.
NOTE: It is usually safer moving files between computers with the same version of iTunes!!
iTunes Files to Copy and Move to your New PC (for iPod, iTouch &/or iPhone – use as needed)
    1) All Music Files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) All Application Files in their current folder structure (usually located in the ‘Mobile Applications’ folder)
    3) All Album Artwork Files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘Album Artwork’ folder)
    4) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    5) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    6) The iTunes Library Extras.itdb and iTunes Library Genius.itdb files, also in the ‘iTunes’ folder
Some additional files to consider also include in a backup:
    7) Any XML playlist files created for Playlist retention
    8) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    i) C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    ii) C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    9) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”
    10) The folder(s) used to store and sync photos to your iPhone (if applicable)
    11) The iTunes created Backup of your iPhone usually located at:
    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Here's a list of methods to copy and move your music files from one computer to another:
    1) Use an External Hard Drive (ExHD) to move the complete files and Folder structures from one computer to another (my preferred option). You can clone’ the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure in one very easy step. Also great to have available for complete backups of your Library. External hard drives now run less than $100 for 500GBs-1TB of storage. See This Link
    2) Directly connect the two computers:
2a) Connect them through a Router &/or Network
2b) Directly connect using an Ethernet cable: Straight for using at least one Mac; or Crossover for PC/PC Instructions here.
2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. Example here. There are various types out there (use Google).
--Then copy the files from one computer to the other.
    3) Use the iPod as a transfer device, as this extensive Apple link explains. It will be a bit easier if your iPod has a larger capacity than your music collection, otherwise you will need to perform multiple copy/move transfers. This well written process also works fine while using any other data transfer medium (ExHD, Flash Drive, DVD, CD, Zipp, Jazz, etc.).
    4) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7GBs each) with your music data files and folder structure, and load them onto the new computer. Re-writable DVDs are more cost effective (if your DVD drive can manage these types).
    5) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #4 above and load the files and folders on the new computer. Re-writable CDs are more cost effective (if your CD drive can manage these types).
    6) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB - 4GB) to move the files and folders. Best if the flash drive is larger than your Library, otherwise you will need multiple copy/move transfers.
These are links to various additional instructions on performing the transfer (read them all, but some listed steps may not be required depending on your specific situation):
Switch from PC to Mac Using the iPod
hudgie: Migrating iTunes for Windows to a new PC
How to copy music between authorized computers
Also, remember to Deauthorize your PC before you reformat it, dispose of it, or retire it from iTMS use (if applicable).

  • Moving photoshop from one computer to another

i am moving Photoshop - creative design suite 5.5 from one computer to another.  It has already been uninstalled from this computer.  the install program is asking the upgrade code.  the challenge code will be told when someone answers.

You have not explained your issue very clearly.  What problem are you having installing CS5.5 on another machine?
If CS5.5 was an upgrade from a previous version you purchased you will need the serial number for the previous version in order to confirm that the upgrade is valid.

  • Moving Itunes From one computer to another

    HI,
Can anyone offer advice for moving Itunes from one laptop to another? The original laptop that has my itunes on it, has broke, it froze and will not operate. Rather that lose all my purchased music and playlists i would like to swap it to another laptop. Can anyone advise if this will be possible and how to do it? Both laptops have windows XP installed
    thanks
    Arlene

    Hi
I am having a similar problem- when I record from Itunes to a cd it only works in "Data cd" format in the advanced tab. That's okay, but when I re-insert the cd and try to import it, it doesn't show anything- it plays in Itunes okay. There aren't any little boxes to check for selecting any songs and if I try to use the import function, it shows as blank.(file type shows as .txt) I am using Itunes 6- would Itunes 7 help this?
thanks- I have a lot of music to transfer and this is a problem.

  • Mail from one computer to another

    Hi;
How do I move mail messages from one computer to another? Both are on 10.8.2? I thought I did it before by copying the Mail Folder (in the Libray Folder) from one machine to the other. But I can't seem to find the Mail Folder in that location.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks;
    Chris

Actually, not all my old messages seemed to have been transfered. Even the ones that show up on the list pane cannot load in the reading pane.
    Any ideas?

  • Moving Library from one computer to another

    Hi,
I know I can share my library from one computer to another via a network, which I am doing. My issue is that I cannot do anything with the music on the computer that is sharing. I am wondering if there is a way to get the entire library from one computer to another. I have a Mac and a PC. I would like my library on both systems instead of just one. I need to be able to update ipods, create playlists, burn music etc... from both computers. Is that possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've got the same type question. Is it possible to transfer my purchased songs from a computer at work via a flash drive? The firewall at work will not allow me to share files with my home computer, however, the computers at work download the songs I buy in about 15 seconds, my slow a** dial up at home takes over 15 minutes per song. I think this is still considered stealing, but I'm not sharing the songs with anyone, I just want to download them at work, then transfer them to my main home computer iTunes library.

  • Moving mail from one user to another

I am moving from my old iMac to a newer eMac. The eMac had been used by a housemate for Mail, and I have now set up a separate user account for them so they can access this older Mail. However, I am having trouble getting the "Mail" folder into the new user account.
I found it in the first user ~/Library/ and dragged it to the "Shared" user folder. Then I switched to the second user; where I can see it but not open it.
I then tried putting it directly in the MacHD directory, with the same result.
How do I move the info from one user to another?

How does one change ownership of a file?
The only way to do it in the Finder is doing File > Get Info (⌘I), changing the Ownership & Permissions settings, then clicking Apply to enclosed items. Problem is, this changes more than is needed and is not the most appropriate way of doing it.
Alternatively, Terminal can be used to issue a command that changes what must be changed and only that. The exact command to use would depend on what the situation exactly is and what exactly do you want to do, though, which I don’t know yet...
I want to move this out.
(I will later move mine in from another computer).
    Not sure what you mean.

  • Problems importing mail from one user to another on same computer

    Hi,
I work from home so I created a new account on my computer so I could have a personal user and a business user. That way maybe I won't always end up working when I'm trying to relax. So I want to bring all my old work emails over the the new work account. But when I copy the mail files to the new user account and then try to import, the folders all have red circles with minus signs. I gather that this has something to do with permissions, but when I change the owner to the new user, they still have the red circles. I also tried just moving the whole mail folder over to the new user, but it's "read only".
Both users are administrators. I'm running OS 10.4.4.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Hi Andrew.
What you tried to transfer the Mail folder from one user to the other should have worked, except I believe you didn't properly change ownership of the files and folders involved.
    7. open new user Mail
    8. Mail asks me to set up an email account
This probably happened because you didn't change ownership of the com.apple.mail.plist file. If Mail doesn't have access permission to write to that file, it just deletes the file and creates a new one (Mail can delete the file because doing that requires write permissions for the directory the file is in, which it has). As a result of re-creating the preferences file, Mail asks you to set up your accounts from scratch all over again.
    14. change the ownership of the mail folder to the
new user, but I still can't look inside the folder
and it has the red circle with the minus sign.
It looks like you tried changing ownership of the enclosing Mail folder only. Ownership of all the items within it must be changed as well. Unfortunately, there is no way to do this properly in the Finder, as the Apply to enclosed items button in the Get Info window also overwrites access permissions, not just the changes you make to ownership. Usually, this is wrong, as a different set of permissions may be appropriate for each item. In the particular case of the Mail folder, however, you can come close to doing the right thing as follows:
    1. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/. Locate the Mail folder, select it and choose File > Get Info (⌘I). Under Ownership & Permissions, expand Details by clicking on it.
    2. Change the settings as follows (you may need to click on the lock icon to authenticate first). Owner: username, with "Read & "Write" access permissions; Group: username, with "Read only" access permissions; Others: "No Access".
    3. Click on the Apply to enclosed items button at the bottom of the Get Info window.
    4. Change Group access back to "No Access", which probably was (or should be) the initial setting when you opened the Info window.
    5. Close the Get Info window.
The right way to (recursively) change ownership of the Mail folder without altering access permissions would be issuing the following command in Terminal:
    sudo chown -R username:username ~/Library/Mail
And while you're at it, you may as well use Terminal to change ownership of the preferences file:
    sudo chown username:username ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

  • Trouble moving projects from one computer to another

In the prospect of clearing up space, I am moving projects from my hard drive to an external.  In order to make sure things are moving properly I open up a project from the external onto another computer, different from the one I moved the projects off of.  When I open up the project, part of the original footage (.MTS file) does not show up in the timeline.  The blue rectangle that represents the footage is striped.  When I open up the exact same project onto the original computer from the external everything is fine.
Also, when I was opening up a project from the external to the other computer the "Locate Media" pop up appears wanting me to link all the media, but all the media has been checked off, as if all the media has already been found.  Why does it do this?
    Thanks,
    Josh

    Hi Josh,
Check this out: Moving projects to another computer: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1BF3BAAB-A930-44e3-8DFA-50D5C58A1A1Aa.h tml#WS3D22F379-B6C7-4d8c-9548-26AA3E1EA74F
Likely you have some of the MTS file structure missing. The best way to move projects, IMHO, is to use the Project Manager.

  • Moving music from one computer to another

I downloaded my music from another computer to an external drive, then uploaded to a new computer. I put it in the same folder as the current music from iTunes.   iTunes does not recognize that the music is there.  can someone help me get iTunes to see the music so it can be included on this new computer in the program?
    Thanks.
    Mike

Unless you've moved away from the default iTunes settings simply copying the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source machine into <User's Music> on the target computer (over a network, or via an intermediate copy on a portable drive) will transfer the library.
See this migrate iTunes library post for more.

    Hi Rich,
To use your applications on a third computer, Sign out of the application on one of the first two computers. Then, you can sign in to the application on another computer.
    Please see[http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html] for a solution.

If so, where is that database located?

A bit more info on the subject plz
I'm trying to move all my video files from multiple HDs to my new 2 Tera HD. I was able to copy with IMovie closed into a IMovie Events folder I created on the new HD and the files appeared ok in IMovie. I'm just wondering how to copy from within IMovie, could not find how to do it apart from export ? Or is there another way to do it? Is one way faster/better than the other ? And also, once the files have been copied, should I just simply trash them directly from the HD or should I delete them from within IMovie ?

  • Moving CS5 from one computer to another

How do I move my Creative Suite Premium 5 from my current computer to another one?

You don't move it, you need to install it on the other machine.  You are allowed to hacve it activated on two machines if you want to keep it on the first one, but if you plan to remove it or simply do not plan to use it on the first machine any longer then you should deactivate it.
If you need to download the files for installation you can download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site or else the download will not work properly.
