Problem oc at MSI 990fx-gd80

I decided to overclock my fx 8150 . First attempt and stable at 4.2 with 21x multi and vcore at 1.42v(pretty high) and 45c temp full load. And after that i want to give more like 4.5 but things gone realy bad. I tried first multi at 22.5 and voltage at 1.45v which was the max volt motherboard can give me (pretty wierd) but after booting normal and testing at prime in 10sec it stopped with error.I tried a compination of fsb multi but nothing again the same error. I would give a little more cpu voltage but motherboard doesnt give more than 1.45 ... same tests for 4.4 but nothing also there. Anyone got an idea why cpu voltage is locked so low? I saw people with same board going higher their cpu. I got the latest bios 11.13 and cpu cooler h100.

what's your current bios version?

  • MSI 990FX GD80 CPU Voltage problem

Hello guys, I am new to overclocking and i think i have encountered a problem.
Whenever i try to increase my CPU voltage over 1.37 volts in B2 bios my PC freezes and cant boot up. The GPU fan ramps up for a moment and it sends a signal to the monitor but as soon as the monitor turns on there is no signal and it turns off. This keeps on going over and over until I clear CMOS.
    PC Specs.
    CPU: AMD Phenom II 945 95w x4 3.0ghz 945 (Deneb) (Waiting for FX8150..)

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5870 Sapphire CF
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5870 Asus CF

I don't know if its a problem with the motherboard or the CPU but the reason i post this in MSI forums is because once unboxing the motherboard I've noticed that there were some scratches on the CPU socket. I don't really remember what it was but i thought it nothing serious.
    Sorry for my bad english...

  • MSI 990FX GD80 REV2

Hi All recently i sent my MSI GD80 motherboard in for repairs due to faulty PCI-E1 slot. the supplier has informed me that they might have to swoop it out however they only have the REV 1 in stock and the ETA on the REV 2 is 6 weeks. my question is there a difference between the two? i currently the FX 6300 CPU and have been told that the REV 1 doesn't support the FX CPU can this be confirmed? i know its a down grade in a way but 6 weeks on a swoop out under warranty is a long wait.

As far as I know the only difference between the 990FX GD80 and the 990FX GD80 V2 was that the V2 came from the factory with BIOS to support FX CPUs where as the 990FX GD80 originally required a BIOS flash to support the 1st FXs when  they came to market. As far as the MBs go they should be the same no matter which one you get. They both needed BIOS update for Vishera as neither one had BIOS to support Vishera when they came to market.
You may need to have the BIOS flashed on the replacement MB to support your CPU but you wont know until you get it, There would be no guarantee that either version of the MB you end up with would support your CPU, you could ask the supplier if they know what version BIOS it has on it. Maybe they could even flash the BIOS to version that supports your CPU.
Basically the downgrade is in name only, MB and hardware on it is the same. Compare the specs, they are exactly the same between the 2 of them.

  • MSI 990FX-GD80 memory issues

just recently purchased the 990fx-gd80 and all i have had is issues with the ram.
i have been testing constantly for 2 days now and come to the conclusion the ram i have bought isnt supported at all
i can only achieve DDR3-1333Mhz 8-9-8-22, because if i take it any higher windows puts 2063mb of the ram into "hardware reserved" in resource monitor.
i have tried all the fixes in the world like msconfig boot options, DDR voltages, manual timings, memory remapping options and basically everything else!
i have the full 4GB running in windows now but i cant achieve the rated 1600mhz speed set by the manufacture.
i have attached the SPD information of the ram below.

op, mods, admins, MSI staff - you can view the issue by:
    1)  flash bios .1 off the web site and clear cmos for good behaviour.
    2)  put sticks in for dual channel sockets.
    3)  select ddr3-1600, save and exit.
    4)  memtest (latest one) from a boot disk.
    5)  test reports (and so will windows) 64bit DC with a stick reserved and you will get through with no errors.  windows will also boot but your 2nd stick won't be available.
    6)  reboot.
    7)  change memory to unganged for 128bit SC and the board will fail to post with a code of 54.
    8)  clear cmos back to defaults to get back in.
    9)  flash *any* other bios *after* version .1 (either .2 off the site - or one of the b3x betas from places), keep the sticks in the same sockets and run memtest again at 1600.  you will find it hangs the *second* it tries to access the 2nd stick and if you can get into windows - you will find that you are in 64bit SC mode (even though you haven't touched the sticks) and still 1 stick will be reserved.
MSI STAFF, MODS, WHOEVER...  on certain chips...  this board doesn't use/initialise/work with/switch on half of the IMC.  it's not an OC issue.  it's not a 1600 issue.  it's not a XMP issue.  it's having a rubbish UEFI bios that was written by drunken chimpanzees and all you're doing by making your customers go round in circles is make us all buy another brand of product in the future.
OP - you've the same issue as me.  my board'll be going back to the shop for a refund after the UK holiday I think.  support have had my ticket in for 3 weeks.  first they sent me a scan of the instruction book   and 2 weeks later said they will get a engineer to look at it.  150GBP for 3 weeks downtime.  bargain.

  • 990FX GD80 V2.2 FF error code

Today I watercooled my gpu but upon starting the PC it gave me a FF error code. i tried everything: move the ram and try with one stick and even with a diffrent stick, tried a diffrent PSU, tried a diffrent GPU, tried clearing the CMOS in every possible way and re checking all the cables. What can I do to fix this?

  • MSI z77a GD80 PCI-e running at 8x and Bios update problem

Hi guys, first of all, sorry for my bad English, this is also my first topic, i recently bought a new PC, the spec is:
    i7 3770k @4,3ghz
    Corsair H80
    MSI z77a GD80 bios 1.2
    GTX 680 lightning
    8gb ddr3 1600mhz cas9 G.Skill
    1TB HDD WD Caviar Black
    Asus xonar DX
The problem is, since the first bios, i can't run my PCI-E at 16x, i know when my card is idle the PCI-E goes to 1.1@4x , but when it's in use, it turns to PCI-E 3.0@8x   , I'm also waiting for bios updates to check if it solves my problem, but when i try to download the new version 1.3, the download fails ( I'm trying to download with Live update 5 )m is there somebody that can help me solve this problem pls?
    I've tried until now:
Replace the card into the first PCI-E slot again
    Clear the PCI-E slot
Update to bios 1.1 and 1.2 ( 1.3 is not even downloading )
Set PCI Gen 3 from Auto to disable, and it keeps running with PCI-E 3.0@8x
    Thx for any help !

As per the manual, the VGA must be in the primary slot to run 16X. BIOS setting for graphics 3.0 should be set to Auto.
    Do not use Live Update for BIOS updates. Too many borked boards are the result. Use the forum's USB method;
      >> Forum Flash Method <<
Just curious. If I installed Add-on card that run at PCI-E 4X on 3rd slot (2nd slot is empty) what's configuration will apply ?

  • Ram problem! (msi z68-gd80,g3)

    Hey there.
have a problem with my new ripjaw x series ram 1866. ( and all other ram)
Tried installing all 16 gb of it earlier today and apparently only the first blue and black ram slot work.
Before i updated my bios to the newest one the pc wouldn't even load it would automaticly restart, but after getting the newest version of bios the computer keeps running but no signal to the screen.
I tried mem test on all 4 sticks by using them on the first two slots 1 black and 1 blue and there are no errors.

How and where do i change those settings? Am a total newbie so you'll have to be patient with me..
In the overclock setting of the bios tried changing the volt to and freq to what you said but after changing that even the working 2 didn't work.. so i had to reset bios.

  • MSI 990fxa-gd80 PROBLEMS

Never in my life I have seen a more unstable motherboard....
Here is my configuration (the system is new, assembled yesterday):
    Cpu: AMD FX 8350
    MB: MSI 990fxa-gd80 (bios verison:13.2)
    Memory: Corsair vengeance 8x2GB 1866
    SSD: OCZ vector 128 GB
    Power: Seasonic 850 Bronze
    System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64
I need some help with the following problems if there is someone kind enough to help me:
    1. after a minute or 2 bios freezes (I think I managed to solve this by setting the correct speed for ddram; initially it's 1333 and I set it to 1866)
    2. Now the windows sees the 16 GB of ram but only uses 8 GB: 16.0 GB (7.95 GB usable); If I set the memory speed to 1333, the windows uses all memory but the computer resets after a few minutes in windows and the bios freezes the same. And after reset it doesn't boot anymore... I have to clear CMOS to make it boot again
    3. sometimes after a freeze, I reset and all kinds of artifacts appear on the screen, and the system is not booting
Does someone have any idea about these problems ? Have anybody experienced something like this ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you sure? All my 990FXA-GD80-Boards have only four DDR3-Slots, not eight...
What happens, when you run the system with only one RAM-module? Check the one module first and the second module later.

  • Problem with msi 990fxa-gd80

Ok after a month of my new setup (8150fx,msi 990fxa-gd80 and kingston hyperx 1866 8gb) i tried to OC some the cpu . After all the settings are done and boot normally at windows i saw the core voltage was at stock 1.28v (using CPU-Z,core temp and amd overdrive) but before at bios i gave it 1,35v. Also i use a multi of x17.5 and fsb 233 but while checking from same programs (CPU-Z, core temp and amd overdrive) the multi goes at 16.5  If i use the amd overdrive i can set the cpu voltage and multi at 1.35 and x17.5 but only from there. Also the system temp at north bridge is a bit high 41 idle is that the correct temp ??? I am using the latest bios 11.10
Plz if anyone knows something about that or had the same problem plz tell me what should i do .

Is amd Cool n'quiet & c1e support disabled?
Also, when overclocking, I don't use amd overdrive (except for the vid card) or control center. Make all your bios changes in the bios.

  • BSOD problems with MSI Z77A-GD80. Possible solution - enabling XMP?

    Hello all,
I have problems with BSOD. When I play game "TrackMania2 Canyon" after some time (usually 15-30 minutes) BSOD shows with these bugcheck codes: 0x4E (0x99, 0x219CD3, 0x1, 0x1620D3).
When I using other applicatons (MS Word 2010, Visual Studio 2010, AIMP3, Gom Player, Chrome, WaterFox) there is no BSOD. Also, I tried to play game "Trackmania United Forever" (older game than "TrackMania2 Canyon") and everithig is fine (no BSOD).
    On this post Leon says:
Quote from: Leon on 15-August-12, 22:17:18
Enable XMP in the bios and put the modules in the black memory slots.
    That should work.
I've been using Corsair modules on several mainboards for some time now without issues.
I want to try enabling XMP for my RAM (it is supported by my RAM modules) to try to solve that BSOD. What I need to do? Does it only possible in OC mode or I can enable XMP in Eco or Standard mode? I do not want overclock RAM with XMP, just to set it on 1600 MHz via XMP.
I do not have any OC experinece (just teoreticaly). The best solution for me will be to enable XMP in Eco or Standard mode. If XMP only possible in OC mode I want other OC values to set like in standard mode.
I tested over 5 hours all 4 RAM modules in the same time with MemTest86+ with 3 passes without any errors.
BTW, when I logged into my Windows account, what is the most easiest way to determine in what mode Z77A-GD80 is (Eco, Standard or OC)?
Configuration (all components are brand new) of my PC is:
    MB: MSI Z77A-GD80 (MS-7757 v1.0)
BIOS: v1.0 (no newer versions available)
CPU: Intel i7-3770K with Fanless CPU cooler (NoFan CR-95C)!
    VGA: Intel HD 4000
    SSD: Samsung, 830, 256GB

    PSU: SeaSonic X-460 fanless
    PC case: NoFan CS-80

All drivers are the latest (I get them on September 1st 2012. from motherboard's page)

You see, the problem is the bandwidth.
Your cpu's memory controller as stated by Intel:
Max Memory Bandwidth   25.6 GB/s (if it devide by 1000, and 25 GB/s if it devide by 1024)
DDR 1600 memory has a peak bandwidth of 12800 mb/sec, if you multiply it out then divide by 1024 you get 50 GB/sec. This is why it is hard to oc memory, it isn't the memory, it's the memory controller. Even with 1333 it is over 41 gb/sec, which why it is sometimes nessesary to overvolt the memory and or memory controller / increase the latency to run at all!.
A BETTER and more exact reason for this can be found here although it is based on DDR2. http://www.overclock.net/t/193449/memory-dividers-latencies-and-bandwidth-explained
I don't know how did you calculate 50GB/s peak bandwidth of DDR3 dual channel 4 X 4GB 1600MHz but it seems too much.
According to my calculations it is 2 X 8 X 1600 / 1024 = 25 GB/s (2 is for dual channel), witch is the value that memory controler for Intel i7-3770K was natively made for (Intel i7-3770K Memory Types: DDR3-1333/1600).
Here is specifications for Intel i7-3770K:
    http://ark.intel.com/products/65523/Intel-Core-i7-3770K-Processor-(8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz)
    I don't think that 2 kits (2 X 4GB) od DDR3 will increse bandwidth double to 2 X 25 = 50GB/s.
Here is my AIDA64's Cache & Memory Benchmark (12.5% less than theoretical maximum for DDR3 1333MHz dual channel):

I've checked all my settings and mic volume is maxed out so i have to resort to use the mic port on my Logitech G110 keyboard which works fine so there's nothing wrong with the mic itself, I'am pretty sure this is Windows issue and yes i know this should probably be posted on some Microsoft forum but I've tried that to no avail just trying to get MSI's point of view of the issue I've uninstalled and re installed my sound card drivers and download the latest ones which came out this month which also don't help the problem. Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue?
     Any help would be appreciated

got a cheapo Logitech headset from work to test and it seems to work now so it seems that my old headset is the problem weird thing is that i still worked in keyboard but not my motherboard slot  its probably the wiring on my razer headset. Thanks for you help anyways jack

At Stock Speeds My computer just frezzes in till i reset my computer or it automatically restarts and i have been losing Work Info because of this problem. In Prime 95 i ran it for a hour no Errors or anything. When i Enable OC genie Prime 95 Crashed in 30 minutes my computer freezes loud noise comes out of my headphones. Then i try pressing reset button no respond so i had to turn of my powersupply. btw my highest temp on the core was 55C. This usally happenes when i play games like: MW2,WAW,Crossfire,CSS,TF2,and so On. Btw im on the latest UEFI and drivers i believe since i used the LiveUpdate.
If i have to RMA this Board can I drop it off at MSI Viking Road Richmond I Live Near there.

Have you tried it without OC Genie ? What are the results ?  Which BIOS are you using ?
Only insert one memory module. Do a CMOS clear >>Clear CMOS Guide<<  Remove the battery for a while.
Ensure that EuP2013, Spread Spectrum and XMP are disabled.
Retest with only one memory module.

  • MSI P55-GD80 Motherboard Problems

Well i got the MSI P55-GD80 but the mobo was bad(so said the MSI representative i spoke to) the Intel Matrix Storage Manager is for SATA RAID and AHCI mode for the mobo drivers, wouldn't open it just kept saying an error has occurred and that the window needed to be closed, also when i turned my PC on, the white formating loading bar appeared everytime i turned it on(not that it was formating though), than the normal windows loading bar would load next as normal, the control center for the overclocking was kinda messed up too seance there is like 4 OC choices and they kept going crazy every time i would chose a mod, when i chose "cooling", power just shut off for the mobo, when i chose "game mod" PC just bluescreened me but only with the OC control center, also when i went on standby the HDD would be the only thing going on standby and the mobo(heatsink, fans, lights etc..) would stay on, eventually when i pressed the mouse and then the keyboard the HDD would boot up. The rest was fine, it even booted my 4GB ddr3 ram at its 1600MHz frequency and I'm using Windows XP-32bit, the ocgenie only got to 3.54GHz eventhought i have the Nirvana NV120 Premium from Zerotherm which is awsome for OC(temps were a constant 33*C idle when oc genie was on and 27*C Without OC-Genie) also the liveupdate would freeze on me on the third file and there was a total of like 8 update files didn't remember the names but it was for the mobo drivers. If anyone else has problems or issues with the MSI P55-GD80 motherboard please let me know.. or comment on this thanks...

Please post your full system specs and PSU spec amps. >>Posting Guide<<
    Have you tried reinstalling Windows?
Do not use Live Update for updating of drivers, go to MSI site to see if you really require the updates, which are not a must most of the time. Also uninstall Live Update from your OS as well.
