Problem opening 2004 PDF. Any ideas?

I have a PDF that was created in 2004. I am trying to open it in Acrobat 9 Pro Extended. The message I get is: " it can't open the file because it is either not a supported file type of because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). The instructions are to recreate it from the source application."
We don't have the source file anymore so that won't work.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Diane

PDF's have a special header within the PDF file that provideversion information to the PDF reader application. If this header line is missing then the PDF reader application will not process the file. But since it appears as text in WordPad it may have been a text file that was renamed with the PDF extension in error.
