Problem opening Appleworks

I'm using an iMac, running OS 10.5.8. I recently got rid of a very old Mac computer that had Clarisworks on it. I now can't open all the .cwk files that were on that machine. I read online that Appleworks should be able to open them. However, when I try to open Appleworks 6 on my iMac, it looks like it's trying to open, but then doesn't. I don't get an error message or anything... it just doesn't open.
So... I have two problems. Basically I want to open and resave the .cwk files. And it looks like I need Appleworks to do that. But I can't seem to open it. Any ideas? Thanks.
Julie

What version of AppleWorks 6 are you trying to open in OS X? You need at least 6.2 as before that AppleWorks is a Classic application.
AppleWorks IS ClarisWorks & the extension remains .cwk. AppleWorks is the name Apple gave ClarisWorks 5 when it took it back "in-house" at version 5.0.3 around 1998. AppleWorks 6 will open ClarisWorks 5 & earlier files except that the last version, AppleWorks 6.2.9, may not be able to open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 will open them. Pages & Numbers open AppleWorks 6 word processing & spreadsheets, respectively. Word for Mac can usually open AppleWorks 5 & 6 word processing. Some users can open AppleWorks spreadsheets with Excel, I can't. Keynote can open AppleWorks 6 presentations. The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. For any other file type, the only application that can open them is AppleWorks.
Your problem with updating may be that you haven't downloaded the correct updater for your installation of AppleWorks 6. The error message means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reasons are:
1. The language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions.
2. The application has been moved. The folder containing AppleWorks 6 must be named AppleWorks 6 AND be in the first level of the Applications folder.
Since AppleWorks was designated "end-of-life" it is difficult to find the updaters (especially the US/North American) on Apple's site. Here is the page of links I have for the 6.2.9 updater. The first has a link to the North American updater in the upper right & links to other languages further down.
As for troubleshooting your installation of AppleWorks 6 it's best to start with two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • Import Error Opening AppleWorks 6.2.9 .cwk files in Pages 3.0.2

Once upon a time I could open all my Appleworks 6 files in Pages. Now, trying to open these files in Pages produces an "Import Error - AppleWorks document 'name xxx.cwk' is not a word processing document."
The file(s) were saved, re-saved and re-saved again as an AppleWorks 6.2.9 .cwk files. Pages 3.0.2 will no longer open any of my Appleworks 6 .cwk files. No drag-and-drop. No FILE/OPEN. Nothing ... same "Import Error."
Anyone having the same problems opening AppleWorks 6 .cwk files? Any solutions? Any advice? Thank you.

There was someone else here awhile back that also had problems opening AppleWorks word processing files with Pages. I had no problem opening the files with either AppleWorks or Pages, so we never did figure out what was the cause. I'd be glad to take a look at one or two of these files. • Error opening Appleworks document

Everytime I try and open a Appleworks spreedsheet in Numbers 09 I get this error: "Numbers quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordProcessing plug-in."
I'm running the most recent version of Numbers, version 2.0.4 (184). I do not have any problems opening Appleworks word processor files in Pages. Do I need to change some preference in Numbers to open Appleworks files?

Put that error message in Google and search. Plenty of people have had that problem with various updates. The solutions go from simple to requiring terminal to taking it to an Apple Genius. Here is one thread on the subject:

  • How can I open AppleWorks 6 files using Pages or Word?

I am currently running Mac OS X v.10.4.11, but I am turning in my old mac for a new one in about a week. Almost all of my important files are AppleWorks 6 files and my new mac will not have this program since it has been replaced with Pages. I currently have AppleWorks 6, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, and Pages 08 on my old mac. I am unsure as to what applications I will have on my new mac (I am a teacher and the macs are school computers so I do not have control over the software), but I think it will have both Word 2008 and Pages 08 or 09. So far I have not had any luck opening my AppleWorks files in Pages or Word. I have been able to copy and paste the AppleWorks files into Pages (they are mostly Draw documents, not simple word processing), but they become an image so I cannot edit the content. I need to be able to edit my documents on my new computer and do not have time to open each AppleWorks file and copy it to Pages anyway. Any suggestions to help me with this compatibility problem?

AppleWorks will run fine on your new Mac, though if you transfer it from the old one you should delete it from there to stay within the terms of the licence. You would need to copy the Appleworks folder over, not just the application.
Pages can open Appleworks 6 word processing documents, Numbers can open Appleworks 6 spreadsheets. It's possible to open AW Draw documents in Eazydraw, or in Pages through a workaround. Nothing will open AW Database documents.
I have written a detailed article going into the process of migrating from Appleworks, including the workaround for Draw>Pages:

  • Problems with AppleWorks drawing docs under Snow Leopard

Since I installed Snow Leopard, I've encountered two major problems:
(Problem 1) AppleWorks gets corrupted when dragging a picture file (.jpg or .png) from the desktop into a drawing document. Various dialogs (e.g. "Format : Document..." or "Format : Ruler : Settings ..." or "Options : Object Size ...") become uneditable. These dialogs will display blank boxes instead of the given object settings, and nothing can be entered into these boxes. AppleWorks must be shut down and restarted in order to continue work.
(Problem 2) When a formula (i.e. an equation) has been created in a MathType window, selected and copied, it takes ages to make AppleWorks the active application (spinning rainbow coloured ball appears and keeps spinning for a long while). Thereafter, it takes another century to get the formula appearing in the AppleWorks document when selecting the command "Edit : Paste".
Everything worked still fine under Leopard; under Snow Leopard it's a desaster.
    p.s.
I've produced thousands of work sheets for my Maths teachings using the Drawing module of AppleWorks in combination with MathType (Design Science). Now I'm stuck since there is no decent successor of AppleWorks available:
    * iWork doesn't feature a drawing module.
    * EazyDraw doesn't collaborate with MathType (i.e. no OLE; inserted formulae cannot be edited by double-clicking).
    * OpenOffice doesn't collaborate with MathType.
    * Micro$oft Office doesn't feature a drawing module.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't use AppleWorks as much as I used to & I've never had a need to use MathType, but I just tried dragging 3 images - a .png, a .tiff & a .jpg - to a new AppleWorks draw document. I had no problems resizing them using Format > Scale by percent & I had no problems using any of the other dialog boxes you mention.
Some basic troubleshooting you might try:
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
You should do this step anytime AppleWorks crashes or you force quit it.
The slowness is likely the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Could you send me a copy of one of these worksheets? Perhaps I can see if I can easily duplicate one in Pages/Numbers/Keynote. Even though iWork doesn't have a draw app, all of the apps do have basic drawing capabilities.

  • I can't open Appleworks (or any appleworks documents)

I don't know what happened, but suddenly I can't open Appleworks. It disappeared from my dock. I made a new alias to put there. If I click on an Appleworks document the Alias icon bounces up and down once, and nothing else happens. Same if I click on the alias icon in the dock. If I click on Appleworks in the Applications menu nothing happens. If I highlight a file and try to open it under "Open With" under the File menu in Finder nothing happens. Any help anyone can provide would be appreciated, as I have a lot of important information stored in those documents. Thanks!

I had a similar problem & did what you said & AppleWorks opened from the desktop. What do I do with the folders on the desktop?
If you really applied what I described:
    +Drag the folder:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
    +and the file:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.appleworks.pli st
    +on the Desktop.+
and if in this case AppleWorks.6 behaves correctly, you may trash the items which I asked you to move on the desktop.
Often, it's a good idea to open the
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
folder which you moved on the desktop ,
grab the "AppleWorks 6 Button Bars" file and move it in the newly created
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks: folder.
Doing that you will recover your set of custom buttons; Of course if you didn't created custom buttons this task is unneeded.

  • Can't open Appleworks

I was erasing the free space on my disk tonight in order to get rid of some data that I had deleted and happened to open appleworks and create a document while I was waiting. The only funny thing that happened was a message "your startup disk is full". I didn't do anything else after that and the disk utility finished and then couldn't close appleworks and the document that I was working on. I read many other posts and dumped all of the preferences and recent items and disabled items and ran a repair on disk permissions. Still can't open Appleworks. No problems with any other programs. What to do now? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
imac power pc G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Appleworks 6.2.9

Where does it say you still have AppleWorks 6.2.7? Is it in Get Info? The splash screen when starting AppleWorks or in About AppleWorks while AppleWorks is running?
If you tried reinstalling AppleWorks, updating it, deleting preferences & recent items or repairing permissions while AppleWorks was running, none of those steps will be effective. You must quit AppleWorks first. Also, you must be logged in as an administrator to install or update AppleWorks. After installing or updating you must then repair permissions & delete the AppleWorks preferences before starting AppleWorks. I'm sure you checked, but to make sure you delete all of the AppleWorks preferences (there are four in two places for each user), take a look at my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.

  • Opening appleworks word processing docs

So I am in the process of converting my 40,000 appleworks documents so they will open in Pages. I am converting all the word processing docs to appleworks 6.2.9. My question is: Is this enough? Will these documents now be safe or is there another step I have to take? I have converted my data bases to fileworks and just want to be sure that, down the road, I won't have a problem once all the AW WP docs are saved as AW6. I've been doing about 100 at a time. I open them all in AW6 and then quit AW and save them as AW6 docs and (I just hold down the return key) trash the AW pre-6 and Clarisworks docs after saving them as AW6 docs. Now they open in Pages. I'm just worried that the next system upgrade might screw me up again. I've been avoiding upgrading from 10.6.8 until I'm sure I won't lose these docs.

You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages, Numbers & Keynote respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents.
There is no special importing needed. There are several methods you can use, common to most Mac applications. Use the Open dialog, Control- or right-click & choose the desired application from Open With in the contextual menu or drag the icon of the file onto the desired application icon in the Finder or the Dock.
If you want to (semi-) permanently change the application to open the files, you can do it in Get Info. I'm not sure how successful this would be with AppleWorks documents, though, since OS X does not differentiate between the various AppleWorks document types & there are three different applications you would use.

  • When I click on any Appleworks document or try to open Appleworks, I get a dialog box saying :Appleworks Quit Unexpectedly" I have a current model iMac running OS  10.6.8. My Appleworks is version   6.2.9. Any suggestions?

When I try to open an Appleworks document or try to open Appleworks itself, I get a dialog box stating: "Appleworks 6 Quit Unexpectedly". I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and my OS is 10.6.8. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks

There was a security update through Software Update a couple of months ago for 10.6.8 that caused this kind of problem for PPC applications. Apple issued a revised update a couple of days later. So my first suggestion is to run Software Update to make sure you have the updated update. You can also manually download the updater at this link.
Whenever AppleWorks quits unexpectedly or you force quit it, there will be some corruption of its preferences.

  • Opening appleworks 6 files on iworks - pages

    Hi all,
Got a new imac after the sad death of my G5. Have downloaded my copied data held in cloud. I created a a lot of files in appleworks 6 using the drawing facility. All these files end in '.cwk'
Iworks pages will not open them as they're not a word processing document.. Has anyone any idea of how I can rescue these old appleworks 6 files? Thanks Jenny

    OK.
I'm familair with AppleWorks' capabilities; use it all the time.
The problem comes from the formatting used by AW for the various kinds of files it can create, hence my request for clarification.
AW word processing files can be opened by Pages.
AW spreadsheets can be opened by Numbers.
AW presentations can be opened by Keynote.
Unfortunately, there is no equivalent in iWorks for AW drawing-type documents.
I just created a simple drawing file in AW (.cwk suffix type) and tried to find something other than AW which could open it. Unfortunately I could not - none of the iWorks modules could open it, and even GraphicConverter could not open it.
I re-opened the file in AW and re-saved it as a JPEG file via a Save As, and Preview had no problem opening it. Of course, it opened as a static image file; none of the object elements in the original file were addressable as such.
It looks like for your purposes you will probably need to install AppleWorks 6 on your new machine.
I installed the version I use in OS X 10.6.7 by simple drag-copying from a drive to which I had copied all the stuff on my G4 running OS 9. It was a new enough version of AW 6 that it was an "application package program" (.app) version, which meant that it includes versions for both OS 9 and OS X. The specific version I have is AppleWorks v. 6.2.9 (which showed as 6.2.8 in OS 9).
Note that AppleWorks is a PPC program, meaning it is not native to an Intel machine. When I went to run it the first time on my iMac, OS X stated it needed to install Rosetta in order to be able to use that program; I clicked OK and it did that. The importance of this is that AW6 will not run in Lion, since Lion does not support Rosetta.
As an alternate you could find someone who has AppleWorks 6 available to them. They could take those files and convert them (via a Save As) to JPEG or other format usable by the software you have.
Note that you can open/create a document in Pages, and then drop a JPEG into it. The Pages wp doc will then contain that picture.

  • Opening AppleWorks 5.3 documents

My decrepit Windows 98 finally went to computer heaven. I've fallen in love with the drawing part of AppleWorks and installed that on my Windows XP replacement (a laptop). Works fine, except...
I used to be able to double-click a file and it would open both AppleWorks and the document at the same time. Now, I get a window saying "file not found" but I can open the document from the file menu in Appleworks. The help menu wasn't much help as the "tip" didn't work.
Is this a problem of an old program (version 5.3) that Windows XP isn't able to handle? Is there any way to force it to do what I want, ie. open both AppleWorks and the document by double-clicking?
I suppose I can learn to live with it, but would really rather get this to function in the way I'm already used to.
Or am I gonna have to upgrade?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I used AppleWorks 5.0.3 on Windows XP Pro at work for several years, but I always opened AppleWorks first then the files I needed. I think because I got the same kind of error. You could try "telling" Windows to associate those files with AppleWorks. That worked for me back in Win 95. I try not to know too much about the workings of Windows, especially now that I don't need to use it at work.

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.

  • I'm having a problem opening my files -..

I'm having a problem opening my files …..for example if i want to download something off the internet and run it after it always opens in Textedit which is annoying…..other programs open fine which are dmg but the exe files won't run….i need help

If you are in fact running Mac OS 9 or earlier, which is from 2001 or earlier, .dmg files are disk image files like the .smi files used under Mac OS 9, but they are only Mac OS X compatible.   They are frequently used to store Mac OS X only installer disk image files.  .exe files are are Windows and MS-DOS executable files which can only run with Windows or DOS virtualization:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2741
Most Mac OS 9 programs you'll be able to download either have a .sea, .sit, or .hqx suffix in their file name and are able to be opened with the old Mac OS 9 copy of Stuffit Expander.
If you are using another operating system, please go to Apple menu -> About this Mac and tell us what you are running.  You posted to the Mac OS 9 forum, hence my response.    If there is an X in the name, you posted to the wrong forum, and I'll have this post redirected and try to answer if I have time.
