Problem Opening Apps on External Displays

Googling this problem is **** near impossible thanks to the internet being flooded with the term "mulitple displays" after WWDC. Having just rewatched Craig Federighi demo multiple display support in Mavericks during the keynote in June, I am confident that I am having a very annoying and repeatable problem.
I have a two displayed connected to my 15" MBP Retina, one via Thunderbold and the other is a USB monitor, and the problem persists with an AppleTV as a monitor as well. Now I know that USB monitors have been having their share of problems in Mavericks, but the problem exists all other monitors. The monitors are not mirrors, and arranged properly in the Display settings. This problem also occurs on my iMac when connected to an AppleTV.
The Problem:
On my MBP's monitor I have Microsoft Word in fullscreen. I move the mouse to an external monitor and summon the dock there to open an app (TextEdit for example). When I open TextEdit, instead of opening on that monitor as it should (and as it was demoed at WWDC), it throws me out of Word on my MBP and back to the MBP's desktop and opens TextEdit there. On the monitor where I pressed TextEdit, all that happens is I can access TextEdit's menu at the top.
Now I have found discussions about the long press of applications on the dock and under Options having the ability to assign them to open on specific monitors. I have only been able to accomplish is by creating a second desktop on my MBP, thereby allowing that menu to appear. More on that here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23632595#23632595
Does anyone know why I cannot simply go to a different monitor, summon the dock there, and open an application and have it open and stay there? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and please let me know if I should futher clarify anything.

  • Problem with resolution of external display

    Hi,
I am trying to use external display with my Unibody Aluminium Macbook Pro (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 2.26Gh, snow leopard). Cable setting I use is quite complicated as it is: macbook: minidisplay port>hdmi> DVI D : display. Display is LG Flatron W2242T (4:3).
So I hooked everything up and macbook detected display without any problem. The problem arises when it comes to resolution. Maximum resolution I can set (and in fact the only except 800xsomething) is 1152x870 and not only it is to low, but also it does not respect 4:3 ratio so it looks quite bad. So bad, that i cant really work on a setup like that. When I try to change resolution to any other, Display goes black. I tried using some apps, but they dont really work.
What can be the problem here? Is it connection?
    I would appreciate any help.

And once you've cut thru the clutter of cables and adapters, remember the max you will be able to push the Flatron is its "native resolution", that happens to be:
    Screen Size
    22"
    Screen Type
    TFT LCD
    Wide Screen
    Yes
    Brightness
    300cd/m²
    Contrast Ratio
    8000:1
    Viewing Angle
    (Horizontal/Vertial)
    160/160
    Response Time
    5ms
    Resolution
    1680X1050
    Supported Colours
    16.7M Colours
(data taken from LG's product page)
If you happen to have a late model MBP with the widescreen option, the Mac and the display will be on a 1:1 ratio, both are the same. Else, if you have a regular MBP, the monitor has more resolution than the Mac (1440x900) and distortion will occur if you do video mirroring.

  • Display problems when connecting Samsung external display to Macbook Alu

    Here is the deal:
    1. I got a new Macbook Aluminum (yesss!)
    2. I got a sweet 23" Samsung LCD display (2048 x 1152)
    3. I got a DVI to Mini Display Port adapter
    4. I hooked the two up
    5. At first couldn't get a resolution higher than 640 x 480
    6. Figured it out
    7. After the Macbook went to sleep I tried to wake it up using my BT keyboard
    8. Screen came up with static/noise and then flashed the desktop off and on
    9. Unplugged display, opened Macbook to wake it up
    10. Macbook won't wake up. Caps lock key lights up, but that is it.
    11. Force shutdown and reboot
    12. External display works again, until later when Macbook falls asleep
    13. Here we go again
Yes I have downloaded the latest update. I have reset the PRAM, etc. with the help of an Apple support agent. So far, the problem remains.
Does anyone have any ideas? Any solutions other than me having to drive me lazy butt over the hill and taking 3 hours out of my day to have a Apple Genius look at my Macbook?

Don't bother bringing it to an Apple store and wasting your time. I'm pretty sure your problem is a known issue with the software and not hardware. I suggest you get a hold of Apple over the phone, make sure you talk to a "product expert" and not a general rep and I'm sure he'll clarify it with you.

  • Problem with T400 and External Display....

I have a new T400 (less than 1 month old) with the shared memory Intel Graphics setup and I cannot get it to work with an external display of any kind.
I've tried 2 LCD panels (one widescreen, and one 4:3), 2 analog monitors, and a video projector without any luck.  All of the displays I have tried work fine with my older Lenovo R61.
I've updated to the newest display drivers and tried working with the various settings under Graphics properties in Vista - Single Display (notebook, monitor), Intel Dual Display, Extended Desktop, etc.  The best I got was a cloned image on the larger widescreen LCD panel that appeared for about 1 minute and then stopped.  I recreated this 4 or 5 times, but the image would not stay on the external display.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

go into bios, check your video output option and whether you selected Internal + VGA, i think... i will check for you on my X60s....

  • Problem w/resolutions on External Display after 10.5.7 update! Fixed yet?!

After installing 10.5.7, like half of the entire planets Mac users I had problems with the resolution my MacBook displayed when connecting to my TV whether in Mirror or Extended desktop.
I promptly reverted to 10.5.6 (thank the lord they recommend a backup!) and the problem was resolved.
HOWEVER, now I want to install Safari 4 and it isn't compatible with 10.5.6....
Does anybody know if the resolution problem has been addressed by Apple?
I did try some of the fixes suggested by other users on here but they didn't work for me.

Did you try the SwitchResX app (VersionTracker.com) that apparently worked for others, according to the users in the other thread where you posted http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2004318&start=180&tstart=0.

  • Finder behaving strangely, temporarily unresponsive when opening Apps folder, External Drive.

Hi I'm running 10.7.2 on a 27-inch iMac 11,1 (Late 2009). Everything has been working great up until a few weeks ago. I can't remember if it was after an update or what.
I have an external 1.5 TB hard drive, and whenever  try to access the drive's root (lowest-level) directory, Finder freezes up for 1-2 minutes, I can't do anything, it just stays unresponsive. If I keep a window open of that same directory and open the directory by opening a new finder window and going to the external drive, it works just fine, but this isn't an ideal work around, since it keeps me from opening the drive via the icon on my Desktop (since that would just point focus to the already-open window, and if I navigate away from the base directory, the problem happens all over again once I try to re-access the drive).
At first this was the only problem, then I noticed that the exact same unresponsive Finder would result if I tried to open the Applications folder, and then again it turns out the Documents folder does the same thing when whatever program I'm using tries to open a 'Save As..' sheet that points to the Documents folder by default, for example. This behavior renders some pieces of software super impractical to use.
Finally, lately, whenever I try to open a directory in Finder that is a sub-directory of my home directory, the directory will use the same 'View Options' as my home directory (background color, etc.). If I navigate away from the folder and back, it's styles appear as normal -- this only occurs when I open a new finder window directly to another directory that is a sub-directory of my home.
Then, I ceased having problems with the Documents and Applications directories (can't remember when), but still have problems with my external.
Phew. I'm not completely sure that the last issue is related to the main problem, but it seems likely.
Any ideas as to what's going on here?
    Thanks,
    Sam
Edit: This has been going on for a few weeks now, restarting the computer, restarting Finder, fixing disk permissions have all been tried.

I am pretty sure I used Apple's Migration Manager to move my account which easily could have pulled over some legacy CS folders in my user's Library.
After some more searching I did find a .plist file for the Adobe Application Manager by having Spotlight look for /Mars. The .plist did include the these (incorrect) paths: /Volumes/Mars. After I corrected that I was able to install InDesign in the right location and it works now.
Strange thing is that Adobe Application Manager still created the invisible folder /Volumes/Mars and put the Adobe Extension Manager in it.
Since I have a book to finish and ID is working now I won't rock the boat but I have no doubt it will hang again and a re-install is in my future. So I downloaded the cleaner-tool and will use it next time.
    Thanks
    Peter

  • Problems opening apps when connected 2 USB port and after

I'm having some problems with my new iphone 3g S... the time I connect my iPhone 2 a USB port it starts charging and sync all my content. The problem is that after the synchronization, when connected and after I disconnect it, I just can’t open any applications I installed! When I try 2 open any apps, the app just blink (the initial screen from the app is shown in half a second) and then it just closes by itself… Am I missing anything here? I find that really weird… I appreciate your help!

Try this: Connect iPhone to your computer. In iTunes on your computer, deselect one of apps to remove it from your phone & sync. This should remove the app from your phone. Now delete the app from iTunes on your computer. Download the app from iTunes on your iPhone & resync. This should put a clean version of the app back on your computer. Hope this helps.

  • How do I prevent OS X from opening apps on external backup drive?

I have an external backup drive connected to my iMac and powered on 24/7. I do a nightly clone of my boot drive to this backup. I've been having a problem lately where OS X will open an application that is on the external clone of my boot drive instead of the internal boot drive itself. One example of this is when I use Lightroom and choose "Edit in Photoshop", instead of opening Photoshop on my iMac boot drive it opens it on the external clone of the boot drive.
Is there some way I can prevent OS X from "seeing" the applications on the clone, and opening them? Thanks.

    Hi,
In System Preferences > Start Up Disk is one device set as the Start Up Disk ?
It may not be clear just looking at the left to right scroll area (depending how many drives and Partitions) but selecting one can often help.
At Start Up the computer looks for a valid Boot Disk.
If it does not seem to be set it is supposed to go through some checks to find out which one to Boot from. Most occasions it will pick the last Drive/partition that it was Booted from. However the order in which the Internal Drives are connected to the system may also pay a part, particularly of the Current required Boot drive is not the original hard drive (Or at least in it's physical place, cable connection-wise).
Also Click on the desktop and open Mac Help (Help Menu in the Finder) and see what that has to say.

  • Open apps won't display in dock

Had Lion since developer beta, never had this problem, not sure when it came about either.
If I launch an app that isnt in the dock, the icon doesn't appear.
Similarly, the safari icon doesnt have an open indicator under it.
Any thoughts on how to fix it?
    Regards

I doubt this is an Apple ID issue, and I don't see that reformatting should be any kind of solution before checking the basics first, such as the deck's plist, etc.
cmcgarr, next time you have what you want it in your dock, you need to right-click on that item, select
Options, and then Keep in Dock.
Let me know how it goes, thanks.
P.S. If you are using any soft of guest account, what you're seeing happening here, is exactly what is supposed to happen. So, you may want to tell us more info on the account you've using.

  • Macbook Pro 13" problems opening apps, installing updates and lag.

Hey guys i got a Macook Pro 13" a few months ago and now I cant open itunes or limewire and a few other applications. They just bounce for 30 seconds and i get a message that it's unexpectedly quit and the options if i wana report it or not. I've done repair permissions made a new account and still no progress. I've inserted the cd it came with to do a hardware test and as its booting back up I hear a click sound and everything shuts off. Another thing to add is that there is alot of lag takes awhile for it to open up the finder files.
Is this a RAM problem? I went to about this computer and it says the status is ok and iv taken out 1 of 2 of my rams twice too see if the problem still continued and it did. Or am I going to need a new hard drive?
Iv also tried to do a software update but as im installing it i get the unexpected quit error again.
    please help

The 1600MHz RAM "should" work on a system that has a 1333MHz bus, since it is only going to down-clock the RAM; however, the system was not tested with this configuration and there may be unexpected behaviors from it.
If it's not specifically a compatibility issue with the speed ratings, it may be an issue with bad sectors in the RAM itself. To test this, load the Apple Hardware Test suite by booting your system with the "D" key held down (or Option-D to load the tools from the Internet). When the tools load, check the box for the extended memory test and run it. This will take several hours to complete, but will report any bad memory addresses it finds.
If you find any bad addresses, then you should be able to return the RAM for a replacement since most manufacturers supply lifetime warranties for RAM modules.

  • Having problems opening apps

    Hey there.
Just got my Iphone and started downloading some fun apps. Every app worked out fine to begin with, except for a mirror app.
When I poke the mirror-app icon on the homescreen it opens the app for 2-3 sec, and then it bounces back in to homescreen again.
Lately this issue has started to affect all my downloaded apps, which *****. I poke the app icon, the program starts for 2-3 sec, and then just bounces back to homescreen.
Any one who has a clue?

Hi. A reset may help. Push and hold the Sleep/On/Off button and the Home button for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release buttons.

  • Problem Opening Stills in External Editor

I am new to Final Cut, but I am trying to open a still in photoshop form the browser. I created a freeze frame still from the current video I am editing, and I have set the system setting for External Editor for stills to Photoshop. But when I right click on the still frame in the browser and choose "open in editor" I get a dialogue box that says "not found"." Why doesn't this work?

I created a freeze frame still from the current video I am editing
If you used the | Shift n | command to make the freeze frame, it isn't recognized as a still image in any program other then FCP. To make an actual still image file that will be recognized and usable in other programs, you have to export as a still image. Set the Timeline playhead on the frame you want, then go to File->Export->Using QuickTime Conversion. In the FORMAT menu, choose "Still Image" and in the OPTIONS menu, choose the file type (JPG, TIFF, PNG, etc). Import the resulting image file into your project and the "Open in External Editor" command will work.

  • External display problems with snow leopard

I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my Macbook and it's created lots of problems with my LCD external display:
    - The display won't work at its native resolution (1680x1050) - it will flash up an image for 1/10 of second and then go black. I can only get it to work at a lower resolution, which looks AWFUL.
    - If I try to start up my Macbook with the lid closed and the display connected, the display won't work at all (it jams on the start up screen). It only works if I keep both of them running
I never had these problems when using Leopard. I've searched lots of forums and found that many people are having similar problems with external displays. Apple still haven't fixed the bug after repeated efforts from people to get if fixed.
Here are some threads (now closed) on this if you're looking for solutions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132912&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136455&tstart=1
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132837&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084332
    Common suggested fixes are:
    - Force OS X to use LCD font smoothing (does not work for me)
    - Clear the PRAM on start-up (does not work for me)
    - Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist (does not work)
    - Change energy management setting to high performance (only works on graphics cards in Macbook 15" and 17").
From reading these forums it appears that this is a well-know bug. Has anyone else got any suggestions to fix this? And why hasn't Apple fixed this yet after so many people bringing it to their attention? It's clearly a bug that wasn't in Leopard.

I'M FED UP WITH APPLE! They've always been a little shady, but the last half of 2010 took the cake!
First it was the iPhone 3g "upgrade" to IOS4 which was garbage and killed my ability to use the 3g until I figured out how to crack the software, wipe the thing clear then reinstall the original software. Next up was purchasing the iphone 4 as a Christmas gift for someone running tiger on their mac, only to find out that the iphone 4 doesn't work on tiger when they tried to sync their contacts - and then having to rush out and purchase snow leopard so that they could enjoy my gift. Then I install Snow Leopard (note - I purchased the family pack) onto my own leopard-running(10.5.+) powerbook only to have the external LCD display I've been using for years suddenly stop working.
Oh, okay, to be fair, it works IF I RESIGN MYSELF TO SET it to "mirror image" (which defeats the purpose of having multiple displays) and drop the resolution down to a pathetic, unsharp, nearly distored setting that is almost painful to look at knowing that this monitor was just A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO showing me crystal clear images.
Then I exhaust myself trying to find a fix only to discover that APPLE in their infinite brilliance (AKA - their torture of loyal customers) knows of the issue - worked it out - then created an update that created the issue all over again. I'm so done! No more macs. I'm going back to the evil land of PCs. At least there, you know you're getting crap, it doesn't sneak up on you after getting you to trust it time and time again.

  • Sticking mousecursor with external display is still a problem...

    Hi,
10.5.7 fixed the "sticking mousecursor" problem with an attached external display (samsung syncmaster 226bw via MDP-DVI adapter) on my iMac and the ATI Radeon HD 4850. Big thanks for that!
But if i plug in a second source (notebook) to the external display (via VGA) and manually switch the active source for that panel from its DVI (iMac) to the VGA input (notebook), the mousecursor on the iMac is sticking again :-/ Switching back to DVI source and everything is fine.
That "sticking mousecursor" - for those not knowing - is a moucecursor which stops movement for half a second all 3 seconds. That bug is mentioned to occur with external Samsung and Philips displays only, as far as i know. Dell's and BenQ's don't have this problem.

update: it has nothing to do with a second computer connected to the external display while it is plugged into the iMac via DVI/MDP. The problem occurs if the external display is connected to the iMac but is not active! That means, the mouse-cursor is freezing regularly when the external display is switched off, or switched to another source (second computer). If the external display in ON an used with the iMac, then everything is fine.

  • Driving external display

I've been using my Macbook Pro with the external display (apple 23' cinema display). As recommended, I'd start the macbook pro, then close the cover, connect the display and press a button on an external keyboard. This will wake the computer up, and the display will start working.
However, as soon as I installed 10.5.2 (or possibly Leopard Graphics Update), this stopped working. The display lights up for a second and then goes dark and the computer goes back to sleep. The only way to use it is by keeping the laptop lid open and then connecting the external display. Then the external monitor works just fine, but the computer's lid is open and its display is also on.
    Does anyone experience anything similar?

There seem to be a lot of problems with using an external display with an MBP. I'm a recent switcher, and have been delighted with the system and OSX, but this seems to be a weak point.
My system came with 10.4, and it had similar problems. I wanted to use the external display with the lid closed, and eventually found a KB article which describes the specific sequence needed to enable that to work:
    1. Boot system with display disconnected.
    2. Connect external display, external keyboard & mouse, etc. Let them enumerate.
    3. Close the lid. The system will go to sleep at this point.
    4. After the system is sleeping, wake it up using the external keyboard or mouse.
At this point, the external display should become active.
Then I upgraded to 10.5. Now I have several problems.
    1. Sometimes after using the external display, when the system wakes up without the external display connected, the laptop display is blank. It appears that the system thinks the external display is still connected, and isn't enabling the laptop display, even though the lid is open. I'm guessing that selecting 'detect displays' would work, but since the display isn't active, I don't know how I would select that Force reboot using the power button is the only recourse I can think of, but I really hate doing that. Any other ideas?
    2. This one happens more often, and is quite annoying. If I have the external display connected when I boot up or wake up the system, about half the time the external display takes on the same lower resolution as the laptop display. The higher resolution mode isn't even listed in the display properties menu, nor does selecting "Detect displays" have any effect. My only recourse is to disconnect the display, then reboot, and reconnect the display after rebooting. This always fixes the problem, but of course is a big inconvenience. Any ideas?
