Problem Opening FCP

When I attempted to open FCP today, this message began coming up:
"The Waveform Cache Files Folder does not have read/write access.
Please select a new folder in Systems Setting Dialog or correct the problem on disk."
I clicked OK and FCP will not open.
I searched for the Waveform Cache Files Folder and there is no such folder on my system.
Can anyone help?

When you set a scratch disc for Final Cut Pro, it will create folder called:
Final Cut Pro Documents
In it, you will find four other folders, one of which is named:
Waveform Cache Files
My thought is that you need to understand a little more about how the app works by exploring what is in those folders.
So locate that Final Cut Pro Documents folder you have set on your scratch disc and examine if you have write privileges to the folder.

  • Problem opening FCP project in latest version 6.0.5

I get the project may be too new for this version of FCP warning. I have the latest upgrade. I originally worked on it on my MBP running TIGER and saved it on a Mac Pro that is on Leopard could that be an issue? Any work around to this? I really need to access my file.

    Does this help?

  • Capture Problem with FCP 5.1

I just loaded 2 new titanium macbookpros with 5.1. When testing the basics of the programs I found that one worked fine and the 2nd kept quitting FCP when I batch captured some test clips. I tried throwing out the preferences and when that didn't help I tossed the entire program and all related files and reinstalled the suite. Still having the same problem of quitting on the capture. What do I do? I'm leaving for India on Thursday and need a solution yesterday! Has anyone out there had a similar problem or did I just buy a faulty computer?

I know you said you threw out your preferences, but have you tried it using FCP Rescue? If not, try this link, download the correct version, then follow the additional instructions posted below by Brian Conner in a previous thread.
    http://www.pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/
"In some rare cases, you have to modify that sequence of actions.
After the step where you trash the prefs in Rescue, quit Rescue, start FCP, create a new project & change a couple of settings. Doesn't matter what, because later you'll be trashing them.
Now quit FCP and Shut Down the Mac. (Shut Down, not Restart.) Then boot up again. In a Finder window, confirm that the FCP preferences files exist.
Now start FCP again and set the prefs the way you want them. Close the project, so that NO projects are open. Quit FCP.
Open FCP Rescue 5. You should not be getting a corrupt settings message. Click Backup and quit Rescue."
Hopefully that will do the trick, or post back if still needing help.

  • Problems with FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9

I upgraded to Tiger, installed the new FCP Studio and everything was working fantastic.
The next morning there was a software update for Tiger and FCP-5.1.4, it's been a nightmare ever since. When I restarted FCP would not recognize my Sony HDR FX1.
I had this problem once before with 4.5 and I fixed it by re-installing FCP and doing the upgrades, so that's what I did with 5 but this time there was a new problem. It wouldn't let me work on anything that I had opened since I did the software update, so I had to do the update again and then FCP wouldn't recognize my camcorder again on startup. If you pressed log and capture you could control the camera but no capture was possible.
So I re-set the easy set-up and presto! everything was fine and I worked productively for a few days.
But then I had to capture some SD from my Canon GL2 so I reset all the settings for DV NTSC and reset the easy set-up for DV NTSC but now FCP won't recognize my GL2 on start-up. If I click log and capture I can control the camera but no capture.
My next try to solve my problem was to downgrade back to my original 10.4.6 and FCP 5.1
That put be back to square one and everything works fine again except I am left with the problem that everything that I worked on after I did the update won't open, I get error 41.
Now I know this is because I am now trying to work on these projects with 5.1 after they were worked on in 5.1.4. But the problem is that everytime I update to 5.1.4 I can no longer capture or print to tape.
I tried the trashing the FCP prefs thing and the repairing permissions thing but I can't seem to solve the problem.
Has anyone else had any problems using FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9?

Not sure how you tried to install 10.4.8 but if all
else fails you can always reinstall the original
operating system that came with your Mac using 'Erase
and Install' then upgrade it to 10.4.8 - probably in
    stages.
Erase and install should be used as a last resort! A better option is to use the "archive and install" feature. It renames your old system folder and creates a new one for the OS you just re-installed. That way you don't have to reinstall everything, your user accounts and emails should all still be there, and if something doesn't work, you have your old system folder to pull things like preference files out of.

  • Mac won't open FCP

Unusual problem when I open FCP a dark screen appears over 1st FCP screen (continue icon) and says to shut down the computer by pressing power button. Basically a crash. I did this 3x but still the same.
All the other programs work ok.

    Jim,
A kernel panic can occur for a number of reasons. Nothing can be determined without speculating until you've accurately described your hardware and software setup.
It's like saying "my car won't start"...
There could be 100+ reasons why. Do you have gas in it? Is the key in the ignition? Battery charged? yada-yada, durka-durka, etc.
Help us help you by listing your details so that we don't have to waste time asking you about your situation in an effort to eliminate the obvious possibilities.

  • Cant open FCP.

I've done a bad, bad thing.  My start up disk was getting full so I installed an additional hard drive then moved all my video projects over to the new HD.  Then I remembered all the capture scratch, audio and render files and located and moved them over too.  Idiotically confident that I had covered all my bases  I dumped all the old stuff.  Now I cant open FCP!!!  I get the Non-Writable Scratch Disks window that tells me One or more of the scratch disks you have specified does not have read or write access.  Good news All the video files I moved are finished and I have DVD's of them.  the only problem is I cant open FCP so I can start on my new project.  I'ver read through two other posts that are similar to this but they don't address this specific problem.  Any Ideas?

open FCP and go to system settings - set the scratch disk to the new location. If you are still having issues after that try using Preference Manager (free) here:  http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

  • Can't Open FCP after I Updated to 10.5.8 & downloaded AVID codecs

I recently updated my OS to 10.5.8. I also downloaded AVID codec for quicktime. Then, when I went to open FCP on my MacBook Pro (2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), I was hit with the error message Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a CPU type G5; this system has a CPU type of G4. I've never had a problem running FCP on this laptop. Any suggestions? Help!

What version of FCP do you have?
Your MacBook Pro is an Intel processor Mac. FCP versions 5.1 through 7 should run on it. Older versions (5.0.4 and earlier) will not. They require a PPC processor Mac like the older G5s and G4s.

  • UNABLE TO OPEN FCP 6.02 PROJECT FILES AFTER INSTALLING LEOPARD!

**Unable to open FCP 6.02 project files after installing Leopard**. Tested and found that the files can be opened on another computer with OS 10.4.10, but not OS 10.5. Spoke to apple support many times, and have tried reinstalling FCP, but it didn't work.
Apple is now saying to erase my HD and reinstall from scratch. This presents a problem since i have software installed but no disc due to a move, (they are deep in offsite storage).
Anyone have this problem? Anyone know a fix?

    Lynne,
There is a section in the manual on the migration tool... I don't have my machine fired up right now so can't direct you to the exact page. I think a search for migration or migrate should do it.
    Two other things to try:
    1. There have been numerous reports that Quicktime 7.3 is what is killing older projects. According to one of the third party program makers Apple re-wrote Quicktime changing the null value to Zero from minus-one. I'm not a code junkie so can't vouch for this but the upshot would be, go back to Quicktime 7.1 or 7.2 not 7.3
    2. There is a Quicktime plugin called "Perian". For lots of people it has caused numerous problems.
Look for Perian on your machine and if you find it, drag the app to the trash... re boot and try again.
Of course the ultimate solution would be to reinstall Tiger, Final Cut Studio 2 and Quicktime 7.2. So far the most stable combined setup for me and lots of others on G5 machines.
36 degrees and thunderstorms with sleet here this afternoon. The door on my storage unit is staying closed.

  • External A/V message pops up when opening FCP

    It says:
Unable to locate the following external devices:
    Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)
I know this means that it can't find the tape deck (which is what I'm using) but I don't really understand why.
(I just want to mention the fact that I am using my school's facilities so everything, minus my external hard drive, was already hooked up)
I shut down everything and made sure no cords were loose and then turned everything back on but I'm still getting the same message when I open up FCP.
If you need any more info I will be happy to give it to you, just bare in mind that I'm not too good with this stuff so you'll have to be reallllly specific

Also make sure that the deck is turned on before you open FCP.
restart the computer. I know this is basic but it is always the first thing I tell friends who are new to this to do as it eliminates a few problems and helps me to know where we are at... If the deck is on and the fresh restart still doesn't see it and you have done what the previous poster said it may be a bad cable, or a setting on the deck.
Keep checking here as the people who are pros here really are very helpful!
I am sure someone will be able to help.
post back with what you have tried s far.
do you have someone on hand who has used this deck and mac successfully that you could ask them as well?
what type of deck are you using?

  • Problem with FCP 7 and IMAC

Recently loaded FCP 7 on new Apple IMAC, in fact on several IMACs. Most work fine, but on the one there is a problem.
If you open FCP first time, it opens fine. However, once you close it and try to reopen it, it gets part way then quits, crash's, whatever. To get it to open again you have to go to the users library, preferences, and delete the three preference files in the Final Cut User Data folder. Then FCP opens. Hassle because you need to reset all the defaults.
What gives? Anyone else see this problem?
    Mike

You could try Repair Permission in Disk Utility and relaunch FCP.
BTW, here a reason not to double post:
    It is confusing and unnecessary

David's link simply points out there is a duplicate post.
To the OP, if you have multiple licenses and are having installation issues, call Apple care. You get free 30 day support for installation problems.
If you are trying to install one license on multiple machines, you are on your own as this is basically illegal.

  • Title issues when exported and re-open FCP X

Every time I create a title box and change the words I export and I get "Title" again. All my work is lost.  For example, it might say "Project Management" in a title text box, and I work on the project all day and then export and the video appears as "Title" and is no longer the size, this also happens when I leave for the day and open FCP back up and I have lost all my text. This is really frustrating I have deadliens to meet not spending all day trying to fix a problem that is now mine.  Please tell me why FCP is doing this? I need some help! I have tried everything I can think of.

It has happened once in another project but I was able to re-type into it and it worked.
So it sounds as though it may be the project.
    Try this.
Delete preference files with Preference Manager.
    Delete project ender files.
    Create a new project.
Copy the problem project and paste into the new project.
    Test a title.
    Good luck.

  • I can't open FCP

Its the same problem seen in this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3174921?start=0
I hadn't opened FCP in a while, it asked about resetting scratch discs, It gave me the page about verifying selection, I clicked on "Set" on the top line. That's when the whole programme stopped opening. Now it will start the loading process, ask about an external device that it can't find (but it always asks this and I always just click continue), then it will quit the programme. I don't have access to options like help or users etc.... so don't know what to do...
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,

Can't open FCP 7 with my serial number. DId work before. Could it have to do with the fact that I have a new Mac BookPro retina

Hi there and thanks for your support.
I´ve been running FCP7 on an every day bases. The problem is that FCP7 for no reason started asking for the serial number. Well I did try to copy paste both my old original number and then the upgrade number (from my archive of serial numbers) but the program does not take eather one.
